Recently I was asked what belt I use in races to carry my gels and phone.
I’ve had this SPIbelt for a long time; it expands and fits my phone and a couple gels. I don’t wear it that often but have used it in quite a few races.
I also have a larger ifitness belt that I rarely use; I actually just gave it to my friend since she didn’t have one. It has bib holders and is able to hold up to 6 gels along with whatever you can fit in the pouch.
A couple months ago I was sent a HipS-sister from Joan. It’s totally unlike anything I’ve tried before, but I have seen similar products online. It’s sorta like a cross between a flat fanny pack and a hip slung belt.
There’s a large zippered pocket in the front as well as another zippered pocket in the back and a smaller pocket as well.
Sonia Kanner created the company hipS-sister based upon the concept of the dreaded fanny pack. Sonia strived to create an alternative option that is fashionable, functional, and flattering.
She was out hiking with a friend and wanted something to put her keys and phone in that basically didn’t look anything like this:
I first started wearing mine for walks because I wasn’t sure if I’d like it for running. Once I used it for walking and it didn’t move around or bug me, I ran a couple short runs with it and then ran the Rock ‘n’ Roll San Diego marathon with it.
It worked out great: I put my phone and two gels in the front zippered pocket and 2 more gels in the back one. I never had to readjust it or felt like it was bouncing or moving. The belt is made of 90% moisture-wicking Micropoly and 10% Lycra so it stretches and fits a variety of waist sizes. The sizing chart from their website (mine is a size A):
I will say this: the HipS-sister sits lower on your hips so if you are used to wearing a belt higher around your natural waist just know that it might feel a little different. I have a tree trunk waist (basically no waist) and wear my clothes a little lower to begin with so I prefer something that sits lower. It sort of feels like a thicker belt at first, but I got used to it really quickly.
If you did want to wear it a little higher on your waist, try wearing it with a higher-waisted skirt like the athletic RunningSkirts: (use code sharethelove13 to save 15%)
The belt is not totally waterproof: I had a ShroomTech pill in the back pocket and being a humid race, it basically disintegrated by mile 18 when I planned on taking it. But it doesn’t get heavy either when sweaty.
To clean it, I threw it in the washing machine and then let it air dry. nice and easy and simple.
I have the Left Coast Sister in Carbon that is $26, but there are tons of options: blinged out ones, longer ones with hand pockets for cold weather, “Global” ones that fit your passport (would be great for traveling!) and even camo.
There are a lot of different colors and styles available so if you’re interested in one, talk to Joan and she’ll get ya hooked up. You can order products here. And if you have any questions about sizing, etc, Joan will be more than happy to answer them on Facebook.
*HipS-sister is also involved in giving back through Pay It Forward which you can read more about here and the various ways they support women and others. pretty rad.
