Yesterday I ran the Surf City Marathon.
The start:
The finish:
The middle:
I ran a 3:19:14, 14th woman, 106 overall.
From the beginning…
PR CITY and I drove up to Huntington Beach together at 5am dressed in some gorgeous garb. We just can’t turn our stylishness off.

I was a little late getting in a corral so I ended up starting with the four hour pace group. My first mile was a 7:50 as I was doing some major underwear basket weaving.
At mile 9 I caught up with Pam and we ran a few miles together and chatted which was a boost for me. Love seeing friends out on the course.
The course is pretty since a lot of it is run besides the ocean on the Pacific Coast Highway, but from mile 11 on it’s two straight shot out and backs – really tough mentally for me. 11-13 you’re running down the highway away from the finish line, and then at 16 you turn around and do the same thing again.
My splits:
By mile 24 I thought I might be able to break 3:20 so I pushed hard and finish with 40 some seconds to spare.
Matt ran with me at the finish for a minute in this getup (he ran the half in 1:38 in it!):
He is the only guy I know who loves running in costume as much as I do. (He also ran RNR San Diego marathon in a full-on Elvis suit with a wig and everything; I need to take some tips.)
After I finished I met up with the girls:
Sarah//Margot//Sheila//Kristina
(Go check them all out for race recaps as well)
I’m blessed to be able to run quite a few races and although PRs and fast times are always awesome, my most fun races are ones where I’m with other people: friends and family.
As I told the girls yesterday, it was nice to hang out and talk for awhile afterwards instead of my usual “I have no one, no one likes me, might as get in my car and head home” post-race cool down.
Sheila//Kristina//Me//Sarah//Margot//Monica
AND MONICA HAD ANOTHER BIG PR!!
She has been on a streak since the fall, knocking minutes off her full and half times. So proud of her. She’s got her fueling and pacing and all that biz all together and just killin’ it lately.
Post-race I met reader Ruthie and a couple other gals (sorry, I didn’t get pics of everyone, I’m a loser). Thanks to all of you who stopped and introduced yourselves. I always love meeting readers. ![]()
For those of you who asked about the skirt, it’s by RunningSkirts. They have different styles, and this one is a “running skirt”. It has little booty shorts underneath it, and Gillian, no, I don’t wear underwear along with the skirt. I’m sure you can, but I don’t.
I like these skirts because they’re not too short. The waist goes up pretty high (to my belly button) so if you want a skirt with a little more coverage that doesn’t dig in at your waist or sides, check these ones out. Sheila and I were joking that they’re kinda like Spanx: they smooth you out and suck it in.
They’re are on the pricier side ($59 for this one), but they have a code right now SHARETHELOVE13 for 15% off. And they’re great quality: my mom bought me this blue one three years ago and it’s still in great shape.
Next post I have a giveaway so check back if you’re in it to win it!

It was SO great meeting you yesterday! I’m a huge fan!! xo Ruthie
Congrats on your awesome race! I am not only impressed by your finish time, but super impressed that you could run that fast after the crazy workout you did before the race. Way to kick ass!
You are so speedy!! Congrats on a great race!
Congrats on a great job! I can imagine that double out-n-back being mentally tough.
“I have no one, no one likes me, might as get in my car and head home” describes me absolutely perfectly after every race. Haha! I love it. I don’t have running friends, and the friends/family I do have don’t love me enough to wake up for me.
I want Surf City to be my first full since I live close by so next year it’s on. Great run SR, I always love reading your recaps.
You are a beast! I mean that in the most endearing way. I was running the ING Miami full last weekend and was thinking on those last miles how you run marathons like no biggie. Seriously, you are amazing! (Ps- I hate races where I don’t know anybody too…haha!)
Awesome time! I did the Half yesterday and it was a PR for me! Monica is quite speedy also!
Congrats julie!!
Congratulations on the race. You ran a great time and I love what you said about having friends & family at races. After you run so many races it is just not about the PR’s anymore but rather enjoying yourself and having fun.
You are so fast – great job! But what I really want to know is how you look so cute AFTER a race?!?! Do you have any tips on that?
Thanks
Ha!! I always wonder the same thing because I look like a sweaty mess after just a 5k!!
Congrats ALSO on 3rd in your AG!!! You killed it yesterday!! Soo proud of you mi amiga!!
Not such a great race for me…I thought I could hold onto a 3:20 finish but, my body told me otherwise. I’m keeping my chin up though…10 wks till BOSTON!!
I’ll call tomorrow a great 26.2 mi training run.
So proud of Monica too!!
Whoa 3rd place SR!! Way to rock it. What’s your marathon PR? I can’t keep up with you. lol
Congrats Pam!! I’m looking forward to hearing about Boston.
my pr is a 3:14 so basically im wayyyyyyy off
thank you Jacqueline!!
Is it to win one of those skirts because I could seriously use some new (and additional) running gear…
Congrats on a great race!
Congrats on another great race! Glad the burning barre class didn’t turn your legs to lead. Missed you this morning!
Wow! You are fast! Congrats on another speedy race.
I agree, having friends around after the race is a great thing! Another reason I am happy my daughter is racing (her first!) with me this weekend.
I love that skirt. Do you prefer the ones with the briefs or the shorts underneath? I’ve never worn the brief type and wondering if I’d feel kind of naked????
I have the no friends syndrome, too. I’m usually hurrying to get my phone so I can text someone and not look so sad and lonely wondering if I should stay or hop in my car and hurry home.
i prefer shorts just bc they give you a little more coverage.
Congrats on another great marathon:) I feel SO out of the marathon loop, can’t even wrap my mind around running one right now. I think that means I need to get one on the calendar asap!
Love the skirt, as well. Looking fab;-)
I love that you saw your fellow blogger/runners – what a cool thing! Awesome job on your splits – so consistent!
It looks like it was a gorgeous day. Congrats on a great race & actually having some friends for a change.
I know, right?
Another great race. I’m seriously in love with that skirt, too. Oh, and your line about having no one. I always feel like that at local races as there’s the cool “run clubbers” and me. Womp womp. Hence why I’m making my husband do more with me this year.
Sounds like another great race!!
The Kidless Kronicles
Congrat’s on a great race lady!!
I tried the sharethelove13 coupon code and it did not work? HELP!
Congrats on another amazing marathon! It looks like you had a lot of fun with it too with tons of friends to run with and chat with. That’s the best kind of marathon- the one that creates even more memories
Congrats!! I’m so impressed with your ability to run so many marathons and get such fast times!
I celebrated my PR with some carrots with salt! I like to indulge… don’t judge.
SALT WITH YOUR CARROT STICKS?! i at least hope they were baby carrots.
Are carrot sticks the secret to PRs and getting slim Monica?!
Everyone wants to know!
Sounds like a great race! Races are always more fun with friends around
You run so fast! Love the skirt!!
How. do. you. do. it??? I’ve ran 4 full marathons and a 50K and I don’t know how you run marathon after marathon and proceed to kill them all!!! Great job!!! =)
Ah man, now you give the code? I bought a skirt yesterday after you linked to it. I better look super cute in it. Not the booty shorts ones though, I don’t need to start any fires on the course. I blame you for that unnecessary money expenditure, by the way. I mean, naturally it’s your fault.
dude, i posted the code yesterday too. ima send you some sexy reading glasses.
Dangit! Apparently I need some sexy reading glasses.
Awesome job!! That is a serious costume he’s rocking. I can barely avoid chafing in my regular running clothes, costumes terrify me. Clearly, I have issues.
Awesome splits! Great time (both the clock time and the fun time) at the race – glad you had some friends to hang with before, during and after your race!
Congrats, 14th overall is amazing! I can’t wait to do this race sometime in the not so distant future (ya know, along with a race in every other state I need for the 50th states challenge).
But never time I am in SoCal, if I don’t get to run with you and RunEatRepeat….I might cry. You two are the cutest bloggy, runner friends ever.
awhh thanks. but we really hate each other in real life.
i kid.
Hi SR!
I’ve just started reading your blog and I love it, it’s great motivation for me to get out there every day! I just ran my first Half in December and I’m about to sign up for my next one.
I tried the code on the skirt website and couldn’t get it to work, do you know if it expires or anything?
Thanks!
Elizabeth
let me email them right now and ask.
Great job speedy! It’s the running skirt I tell you.
It’s all I run in!
Awesome job as usual!!!
So fun to meet you at the expo! Thanks for the pic on your blog! You rock!!
I love the skirt too! I’m still a newbie runner so I can’t even imagine running a 7-something minute pace and talking at the same time. I would be dying.
Thanks for answering my question in your post
I remember cheerleading in junior high and wearing underwear and then these underwear type things over them that were our school color so your ass was covered but the 2 pairs felt diaper-like. Just considering my skirt buying options (running vs athletic) at Running Skirts. Thanks for the discount code too!
Way to go on the awesome race time!! Congrats!!
Your times are scary! In a good way, I mean.
Awesome time, well done. Sounds like a great race and really cool that you had people to share it with. That is definitely always the best! Love the skirt too!
Great recap!
Wwoeeee, CONGRATS on such an amazing time – as usual!!
Good job on another GREAT race. This Indiana girl sure is jealous of that beautiful California weather.
