This sure is a crappy luau

WORKOUT -

Ran on TM –

5.25 miles/45 mins

1.0% incline

easy, relaxed pace, listened to a podcast on my phone with my sweet headphones

Xtend barre class -

60 mins

I did an easy 45 minute run on the treadmill, changed into dry clothes and headed to a 7:15am barre class.

I usually take classes from Bri, but today Stephanie, the owner of the studio taught, and it was ridiculous hard, maybe the hardest class I’ve been to yet.  There was lots and lots of pulsing, little movements that make every muscle feel like they’re on fire.  So basically me in class today:

Bri and I had to get a picture together because we unknowingly dressed like twins with our Old Navy tank tops and BIC bands.  You can tell I’m really graceful…

After class I had to hurry to meet Monica to head up to the Surf City Marathon race expo in Huntington Beach.  It’s such a cute, beachy themed expo that I almost thought we were going to a luau for a second.  Where’s the roasted pig, all I see is protein bars?!

We met reader Leslie from Portland who was sweet enough to come say hi and is running the half tomorrow:

By the way, is Monica not looking ten shades of fabulous these days? I asked her to spill her secrets, but all I heard was her mumble something about how I don’t have red hair so she doesn’t like me…

We also ran into Sarah (TALL SARAH) and new friend Sarah from Seattle.  Who doesn’t like who now, not named Sarah Monica?!

And lastly, I already Facebooked this picture, but I saw Sandy from BIC Bands – sweetest girl.  She continues to donate $1 from every band sold to charity, love that she stays true to that and continues to create such cute bands that are made here locally.

I picked up a new chevron print band (I don’t think it’s online yet) and these brand new sparkly hair ties/bracelets.  I’m going to try them out in the race tomorrow so I’ll let you know how they hold.

Race expos are always such a great time. It sounds like you were able to pick up some great gear. I really love BIC Bands–they work really well, you can order them in multiple sizes, and their committment to charity is awesome. Good luck with your marathon tomorrow!

I was just thinking when I saw the picture of Monica that she looks really pretty!! Have fun at your race tomorrow. That’s a fun way to theme an expo.

I NEVER run without BIC Bands. Unless it is sunny and I am wearing a visor or cold and I am wearing a hat. But usually BIC Bands. I need my hair back.

Good luck tomorrow ! Excited to hear your BIC band review tomorrow. Love the idea of a hair tie and bracelet.

Hey girl!
I am interested in becoming a Barre instructor. Can you ask your friend what’s involved with getting your teaching certification?

Reply

Bri February 4, 2013 at 9:11 am

Hi Jen,
That’s exciting you are looking into becoming a barre instructor! Every barre method is unique and most are at fanchised locations. As an Xtend Barre certified instructor, I’m only allowed to teach at XB locations, same thing goes for Pure Barre, Barre Method, Barre 3, Physique 57, etc. The only barre certification that allows you to teach any where is Booty Barre.
Xtend Barre requires all instructors to be certified in mat Pilates before they teach Xtend Barre. Booty Barre requires you to have a group fitness certification through AFAA or ACE. After you get the pre-reqs, you go through about 18 hours of barre training and to pass the certification you submit a video of yourself teaching.
It’s a long process, and costs about $1,000 total, but well worth it!!! I LOVE teaching Xtend Barre!

Sandy is really nice and her bands are great. I’m probably one of the only runners who doesn’t really like expos – unless they are luau-themed…WITH fire dancers. Otherwise forget it. I probably won’t even enter the race unless they have a mail-out packet option. Monica really is lovely.

Ran a 5k this morning, which is the longest race that I have run in. When we got there the car thermometer said 13*. It was snowing and windy and my friend and I ran it in REALLY:SLOW.

SkinnyRunner February 2, 2013 at 7:00 pm

Man I would be scared to run in that cold!

Reply

Tami February 3, 2013 at 5:40 am

I was scared to run in it too. The only reason I ran was because I already signed up, but now I know I can do it. Now when I don’t run because it is too cold I know that I am just making excuses!

Is athletic wear from old navy any good? Their normal clothes are good for like one wash before they are toast!

Ha…that first picture of you I thought you were floating or something…totally had to take a longer look to figure the counter and mirror thing out.

(Too much coffee this early is playing with my eyes I see …and wasn’t that a non gibberish very grammatically correct sentence? I should go back to bed now.) ;-)

Heya,

So Lately I’ve been doing double duty and going for a run and trying to work in a fitness class like pilates or yoga on the same day. My friends are telling me its unhealthy but I’ve been feeling great. It looks like you do it everyday! What would you have to say about that?

Reply

Megan February 4, 2013 at 6:46 am

Hope your race goes well! You are practically famous at expos, so many friends!

Reply

Bri February 4, 2013 at 9:21 am

OMG, the burning photo is exactly how I felt on Saturday too! That class was INTENSE!!! I had to take many breaks during all the pulsing and pulsing and pulsing. This morning I asked the 6am girls how they felt on Saturday and they agreed that it was the hardest class they’ve taken in a long time! Chariese & Gisela stayed for the 8:30 class and said it was easier than the 7:15 class. I think Stephanie pushed us harder than normal because the majority of students were regulars & advanced.
Time to step up my classes? :-)
