Brunch at Plums

by SkinnyRunner on February 1, 2013

WORKOUT -

Ran on TM -

10.05 miles/1:13

1.0 incline

7:15 average pace

hard!

This is how my treadmill run went down:

30 mins/4.1 miles – 7:19 pace, watched the news, WILL BEYONCE SING LIVE AT THE SUPER BOWL??? is all I got from it.

(1-2 minute break)

15 mins/2.15 miles – 6:58 pace, watched the news, thought about my odds of blowing out a lung.

(break)

15 mins/2.0 miles – 7:30 pace, listened to music, figured I’d quit at an hour, thought about my odds of blowing out my shorts.

(break, then thought what the heck, might as well go to 10 miles)

13 mins/1.8 miles – 7:13 pace, listened to music, pretended I was blowing da club up with some rap music.

7:15 is not an easy pace for me to hold for more than about 2 minutes so this was a hard run for me, but it felt good to be soaking wet with sweat once I was done… until I got in my car and just felt like total swampbutt.

After the run, we had some early morning errands to run and stopped at Plum’s Café in Costa Mesa for brunch.  We don’t go out to breakfast that often so it’s a treat when my husband will go out in public with me we do.  (I felt very Sierra-ish, girl loves her morning meal).

Our foodie friends had recommended Plums, and the husband had been twice before but I never had.  I checked out a few other places on Yelp, and this one looked the best.

By the way, so glad there’s reviews on every Denny’s, IHOP, Marie Callenders, and every other chain restaurant on there… including fast food joints.  I need to know if the Gordita Chalupa is as good as the Crunchwrap Supreme.

20130201_093147 (800x599)

Anyways, it’s a cute little joint in a nondescript strip mall with nice, strong coffee and great service, our waitress was crazy nice.

I ordered a Greek omelet that was good but nothing amazing; I think they’re known more for their sweeter breakfasts like coconut French toast and blueberry pancakes.

20130201_094408 (800x591)

But the real reason I like Plums is because they’re PNW, baby!

The Northwest-influenced menu features signature dishes such as, Alderwood Smoked Salmon Hash, Oregon Pepper Bacon, Fresh Roasted Hazelnut Pancakes and lunch selections that include; Pan-Fried Trout, Fresh Wild Salmon and unique sandwiches and salads.

After breakfast we had to stop at three different golf stores all over Orange County so by the second one, I was playing with filters and selfies… a dangerous combo for me.

STEALS AND DEALS

Reader Willie sent me the $10 off code ROCKCALTRI that is good for any Competitor race (Rock ‘n’ Roll series, TriRock, Muddy Buddy, etc).

Do you have a favorite breakfast joint?

I love The Beach House in Laguna Beach; it’s a little pricier for breakfast but it overlooks the ocean and is gorgeous.  Plus, if we take out of town guests there, they seem to think we’re really cool so there’s that.

“watched the news, WILL BEYONCE SING LIVE AT THE SUPER BOWL??? is all I got from it.” <– best thing i've heard all day.

My current favorite is Box’d. It’s a tiny joint at the beach and the only things on the menu are stuffed waffles, coffee, cocoa, milk and juice. It’s outdoors and you sit on plastic chairs and just enjoy the ocean air. So.dang.good.

Next time you are in town we will run and then eat our faces off, k?

Way to burn up the treadmill!!!
I love hearing where and what you eat – always looks good. Plus, I’m glad that I’m not the only one still eating meat, gluten, wine…..
Sometimes I read other blogs and feel like the worst eater, cook, therefore, mom in the world because we just eat. I try not to get wrapped up in it because I know we still eat pretty healthy stuff.
Thanks for sharing your pics!!!

Haha. You have nothing to worry about, Kim. I’m here with you guys. Meat, gluten, and wine/beer are the reasons I run!

Haha I love the selfie. I prefer sweet breakfasts anyways so that would actually be right up my alley… if I lived on the west coast. I bet you live near my roommate. She’s from laguna so I’ll have to ask her about those places!

This post is freaking hilarious!!! The part about thinking about blowing out a lung made me laugh so hard I almost peed my pants. I am not much of a fan of sweet breakfasts either. If I am going out for breakfast, I want something with veggies, eggs and a TON of hot sauce. P.S. I am seriously jealous of your aviators and thanks for the $10 off code.

We go through phases of eating breakfast out a lot. Currently we don’t buy we have certain spot that we always take our out of town guests over looking a lake with the best breakfast in town.

I love breakfast at first watch. Lunch is actually my favorite meal to eat out. Love the shades!

I love your blog, mostly because I HATE running, I do it, certainly no where near as far as you do but i get out there and I am pretty sure look totally spaz’matic at 6am running the streets of my little big town! Any how I live in the Bank Bubble (Burbank) and love me some Bea Bea…….firemen and cops swarm this joint so if you are wanted or a fire bug you may want to keep away! My fav is the Pumpkin Waffles with warm apple and walnut compote! Holy amazing pants! Thanks for entertaining me whilst at work, you are a funny nut!

I can’t even remember the last time we went out for breakfast other than The Good Egg. But there are a couple of places in Phoenix we want to try.

Plums looks really cute and tasty! Definitely have to give it a try. We went for brunch last weekend at this cool place called International House of Pancakes, pretty fancy I know. But hey, can’t beat unlimited pancakes for $4.95. Made my hubby happy. :-)

We love taking out-of-town guests to the Beach House too! Love their french toast and pesto chicken sandwich.

I’ve pulled the trigger….marathon is on the books. What if I get addicted?

I love me some brunch….like all day, any day. Our husbands would be BFF’s…They both love golf, yorkies, and pizza. Can we set them up on a bro date?

That’s some hard and great treadmill running! I’m stuck on the treadmill for a few days (and it is so mentally hard for me to stay on that thing!)and you’re such a great inspiration for getting it done on there!

We have the most amazing breakfast place here. They make these banana pancakes that are TDF. OMG, I want to go there now!

We have a fabulous little place in Rochester called Jines. It’s delish. Like Plums, it’s known for its sweeter breakfasts but they make a mean omelette too.

Girl, you tore up that run! And hopefully not your pants! Loved the sarcasm concerning yelp and fast food junk joints! haha

As excited as I am for my marathon, I’m also excited to finish training so I can start doing some speedwork:-)

Sounds like you killed your treadmill run–congrats! I always find I can push myself to run faster for longer periods of time when I listen to some good rap or dance music. And thanks for the RNR coupon code!

Wow! I can’t even imagine what a 6:58 mile would look like (or a 7:30 or 8:30 mile mile, to be honest). I’m not big on eating out for breakfast, but I enjoy going out for coffee. Portola Coffee Lab in Costa Mesa is my favorite!

i need to go there bc I LOVE COFFEE.

I don’t have a favorite breakfast place, I love breakfast foods but I prefer to make them myself. Weird I know, maybe I just haven’t been anywhere fancy enough haha

Hmmm favorite breakfast place would have to go to Datz in Tampa! Check it out http://www.Datztampa.com – the monkey bread is ridic!

It’s so beautiful up there!! While I will always say the West Coast is the best coast – I have fallen in love with Florida, mainly Tampa! I LOVE that my family is all up and down the west coast and I can always visit!! My sis lives in San Clemente – I think now Southern Cal is the only place I could live other than sunny FL!! Tampa, you have RUINED me! PS: Nice run!! You inspired both my husband and I to plan out our Sunday long run – We both think you’re a badass!

I honestly love the ‘idea’ of going to breakfast but the only thing on the menu that usually healthy is eggs.. And I can make eggs at home.. I don’t like to ruin my diet until dessert.. Or drinks.. At night… So I always think its a great idea to go out to breakfast but can’t bring myself to eating 100g of sugar at 9am..

Currently my favorite breakfast is downstairs in the lobby of whatever hotel we happen to be staying in… I’m starting to feel like I live in hotels and it’s too cold to venture out and look for cute places like Plum… I wonder if the hotel can get some roasted hazelnut pancakes. That sounds amazing!

There is a little breakfast joint in Asheville, NC that is entirely phenomenal. If you ever hit up that town, and I recommend it, go. It is called Tupuelo Honey I think. Something Honey.

Love Plums, that place is amazing and so packed on weekends. Our favorite place used to be about .5 mile down the street from Plums called Omelet Parlor but it was closed down recently when the remodeled the shopping center – many sad people ; ( Haven’t really found a favorite again.

If you like coffee next time you are in the area go to Kean Coffee, you were about .5 mile away from it. So good! Oh and right next to it is Susie Cakes bakery – you will thank me.

Cornmeal pancakes at Gypsy Den in Costa Mesa are awesome. I used to love the Cottage in Laguna but now it’s going to be Urth, which will probably be tasty too but not vintage Laguna.

I so wanna try that “fresh roasted hazelnut pancake”! My fav brekkie places are small neighbourhood cafes – there’s one in Hartamas and another one in Bangsar Village. I usually head there after my run on Sundays.

We went to Denny’s last night for supper and it was the worst meal I have eaten in a long time. I had only been there once before, and I ordered a Western skillet..it was so salty I couldn’t even eat it.

Oh yes, Plums is very yummy. My favorite morning place was Westside Grill on 19th St. in Costa Mesa. Sadly, they lost their lease and closed a few months ago. If you wore your PJ’s to brunch on the weekends they gave you a discount. Their pizzas were also out of this world. I also miss the Omlette Parlor on 17th Street, as Deirdre mentioned they closed down due to new construction. Boo! I had no idea The Cottage was changing….that is bummer. My goal is to find a new place that will let me drink unlimited mimosas in my PJ’s, give me a discount on my check for wearing my PJ’s…..and of course, it needs to be a short bike ride from my house……

Awesome pace:) I just did 10 @ 7:15 outside – for the record, I don’t care what people say about treadmill running being easier than outside, that same pace on the treadmill ALWAYS seems harder for me than outside, and we all know I don’t do incline on the treadmill, and I run hilly outside. Anyway, nice treadmill run:)

When you come to Boston for the marathon, you *must* go to the Train Station diner in Newton and/or Uncommon Grounds in Watertown. Omelets, stuffed French toast, and any kind of pancakes you can think of. Delish!!!

My favorite breakfast place is back in my college town. They made THE BEST bagels, and their breakfast sandwiches were amazing.

We go out to breakfast or brunch almost every weekend. I like that for a date better than going out to dinner. We recently found the most amazing hole in the wall place here. I’m pretty sure their secret ingredient is butter. It’s awesome.

Reply

SkinnyRunner February 2, 2013 at 2:53 pm

butter makes everything awesome. butter on butter on top of melted butter with a side of butter.

I can’t believe you mentioned Denny’s and IHOP in the same sentence. They are so completely different. And then to throw Marie Callender’s withOUT mentioning Baker’s Square by name. Tsk tsk. As a member of the Food Chain Coalition for Fair Publicity, I’m going to have to bring you in for questioning.

Nice job on that run, BTW.
