Hitting the barre with friends

by SkinnyRunner on January 26, 2013

WORKOUT -

Ran outside -

5.0 miles/43 mins

easy, rainy miles

Xtend barre class -

55 mins

This morning I went on a short, easy run in a new pair of Mizuno Wave Rider 15spurple, black, and white… sounds like someone’s cheering for the Super Bowl already…

And then Katie and I took an 8:30am Xtend barre class.  It was her first time, I think she liked it?

Bri taught the class; as usual she kicked our ballerina booties.  I was saying that even though I have massive calves, any barre work done on our toes just kills me.

And it’s crazy how you can burn out your muscles with tiny 1 and 2 pound weights.  My shoulders were screaming.

As we were leaving, we ran into Sarah who was trying out the 9:45 class.  She had just run 12 miles beforehand so I’m already praying for her glutes and calves now.

Now we’re headed down to San Diego to go to the Farmers Mutual at Torrey Pines (golf tournament), but we stuck in massive traffic/car wreck.  blah.

Barre is totally crazy how it kills your muscles with tiny weights. I always go for heavier ones when doing pilates or physique 57 type workouts, but usually regret it since all those reps make me want to die a little inside.

You do the barre thing in socks? I feel like I’d be sliding all over the place! Nice title, by the way. Punny.

I hope you weren’t in the car wreck! Ugh-slow traffic can be so frustrating. Good luck getting there.

no, we weren’t thank goodness. :)

I feel like I really need to try this barre! It seems like such a great class!! I think it seems to compliment running very well – good addition to your normal workouts!

Your really making me want to give these classes a try! Sounds like fun. Plus, I need a bit more flexibility in my life.

Closest barre to me is an hour away. Bummer. I almost ran into RER Monica today at the expo! But didn’t. Another bummer.

Good luck with the golf. Watching it on tv here in uk. Fog stopped play. Btw received pro compression socks today on your recommendation all the way from usa. Wore them all afternoon after 8 mile run this morning.

The Barre classes sound fun (in a sadistic kind-of way). Not sure I have the coordination to ever try one but who knows – maybe if I stumble into one!! Have fun at the golf tournament!!!

When I read how Sarah runs 12 miles and then is off to class, I feel like a slug. :)

You 3 do look like ballerinas! haha!
And you look gorgeous in that last picture :)

Have fun in San Diego, I was told by a random American once that that place is a MUST visit!

All of these barre posts have me hunting for the nearest barre class. It seems like a great workout.

Those bar classes sound brutal, but I laugh every time I think of myself potentially being at one; I would make such a fool of myself! I bet it would be great for my hips though!

I wish my gym had a barre class!! I hate how expensive good classes are, I am trying out the new Animal Flow class at Equinox gym tomorrow and I’m really excited. I am doing 11 miles tomorrow also so the class should be interesting…

Reply

Sarah January 26, 2013 at 3:43 pm

Oh god I can’t imagine doing a barre class after running 12 miles. All I want to do is go sit on the couch after either of those workouts. But to combine them, that’s impressive! I’m glad your friend liked barre. It’s a fun class and surprisingly effective!

I know you posted about it yesterday, but that striped shirt you wore to the barre class is awesome! I love it. Glad to hear you are enjoying the classes!

You totally do not have massive calves! I, on the other hand, have trouble finding boots to encase mine.

I tried the barre3 class through something online. My lightest weights were 3 pounds, so I just used those. Ended up getting super owned, so I switched to water bottles. Still burned like crazy!

Barre class sounds like a lot of hard work, but fun. I wish I had one near me in UT. Love the outfit!

Xtend Barre just opened a studio in Provo, UT, is that near you?

I’m saving up for a new pair of running shoes… hoping to buy in a couple weeks :) I’m a new runner – would you recommend starting with Mizuno (those purple ones are so cute and I loved the teal ones the other day!) or should I start with something else?

Reply

SkinnyRunner January 27, 2013 at 10:58 am

I would recommend going and getting professionally fitted. Don’t just buy a shoe based on color or brand, it needs to fit your specific gate and needs.

Jessica @ Prayers and Apples January 27, 2013 at 11:06 am

I really like those Mizunos! I’ve never tried that brand before but have been thinking about it since you clearly love them so much.

I took a barre class for the first time the other month and it killllled me, in a good way. I wish I could go once per week and make it part of my strength training routine, I just hate driving out there…

Reply

Ann January 27, 2013 at 1:46 pm

They talked about getting a class like this at my gym but I think that must have fallen through. Looks like a lot of fun.

I’m planning on taking a Barre Fitness class in my hometown after nearly 10 years away from ballet – looks like a fun time. By the way, you look wonderful without makeup. Do you use a tinted moisturizer when you go to class? I could use something…

Alright, all your barre workout posts have inspired me to look up a barre studio in my area & guess what?!?! There’s a new studio opening this week and they are having FREE classes all week, so I signed up!!! Hopefully, I can get our booties (me and my kiddos) out the door for an early class!

Love this!!! And I love working out (teaching) with friends too. Different level of friendship when you sweat together, let your make-up run and hair get tangly. :-)
