Treadmill Running: Easier or Harder?

by SkinnyRunner on January 16, 2013

WORKOUT -

Xtend barre class -

55 mins

Ran on gym TM -

8.0 miles/1:07

1.5 incline

I took a 6am barre class with Bri teaching this morning and Monica came too!  She totally showed me up so I’m thinking about slitting her tires.

{instagram: RUNEATREPEAT}

The class was especially hard today, lots of me stopping and getting out of movements when I wasn’t supposed to.  The Relevé stuff done on your toes just kills me.

Then I went to the gym and ran on the treadmill because it was too cold outside for this wimp.  I’m trying to challenge myself by running some more miles at 1.5% incline rather than the normal 1% I do.

Reader Jordan emailed me about training exclusively on a treadmill and if I think TM running is easier or harder than running outdoors…

Well, I don’t think it’s ideal to only train on a TM, but it’s way more important to get those runs in however that happens.  So if that’s a treadmill for you, go for it.  HRG trained for her first marathon and ran a 3:20 or something craycray entirely on the ‘mill, and EMZ runs like 4,000 miles a year on hers.  not exaggerating.  So if your choices are Treadmill or Skip a Run, hit the hamster machine.

Unless you are an elite/semi-elite athlete, there’s usually 100 other things you can do to improve your times (getting a coach, a customized training plan, strength training, cleaning up the diet, dropping a few pounds, choosing 1 goal race, core work, speed work, sleeping more, stressing less)  besides just running outside or worrying about the ‘mill miles.

tps800_back3-4_2

{The True treadmill that I’m saving my pennies up for}

Like I said, if the treadmill is the only way you can get your runs in (due to safety, weather, early morning darkness, sleeping babies etc), then do that.  Try to throw in a little variety – instead of running the same speed, do speed work or crank up the incline to mimic hills.

I found a post on Runner’s World that has 4 different treadmill workouts you can do to mix things up, stave off boredom and keep improving your fitness.  Also, try to run at a 1-2% incline to offset the lack of wind resistance and the perpetual motion/motor factor.

Lastly, do I think it’s easier/harder to run on a treadmill?  I don’t know.  I think I personally run faster outside, but I also sorta think there’s a mental toughness aspect to treadmill running – like you’re building your mental strength at the same time.

I really don’t mind running on one: it’s a bit mindless and numbing and sometimes I just want to zone out.  Plus, I like watching the news at the gym in the morning… and taking pictures of myself…

What do you think, are treadmills easier or harder than running outdoors?  Which do you prefer?

I was JUST thinking about this as I was finishing up 10 treadmill miles – my head says treadmill are easier, but I always have an easier time hitting the same pace on a treadmill, outside. And, I NEVER run on incline. I hate it. I just went to USATF coaching class this weekend, and they said that running on a treadmill really doesn’t make as big of a difference as people think. And actually the whole wind resistance thing is kind of a wash because it actually helps keep you cooler, while on a treadmill, you don’t have the wind, so your sweat kind of just sits. It’s all very interesting to me. I love the treadmill lately. But I also try to balance it with outside as much as possible!:) Good topic:)

I definitely say running on my treadmill puts me in a zone. I can just shut my mind off, relax into the steady pace of my feet pounding one foot in front of the other and drift off into a place where it’s like no one else can get to me. All my cares and worries are driven away with each step I take. Maybe that’s what it’s like for you outside runners but I get that more on the TM. It’s good.

I actually don’t mind running on the treadmill! It gives me time to watch Sex & the City marathons and cooking shows (ironic?).

On the other hand, nothing beats the great outdoors! I find you can challenge yourself more with hills and whatnot outside, or get a better feel of a race course when you simulate it outside.

Adrienne @ Happy Ramblings January 16, 2013 at 3:48 pm

I find running on the treadmill harder, I run faster outside. It does take some mental toughness to stay on the ‘mill for any extended amount of time. It would take a lot more physical and mental toughness to run in the 5 degree weather that we have been having in the mornings here!

Reply

TorontoRunner January 16, 2013 at 3:50 pm

I agree with you about the mental toughness on the treadmill! I find it INCREDIBLY difficult to go for miles and miles on that thing..even with TV entertaining me, I just struggle to keep myself going!

Outside running(weather permitting), I really enjoy. I can go for longer outside because I’ll plan out a route that basically I’ll be either walking home, or running. your choice. ha!

Laura @ RunningJunkie123 January 16, 2013 at 3:51 pm

So funny. You totally just changed my mind. I had packed my gym bag to do 8 miles outside tomorrow, then I read this, remembered we are supposed to get snow and sleet ALL day and I thought “I’m a damn fool”. haha.

Personally, I think that running on a treadmill is harder. I always go faster outside. I think it’s partly mental, partly that I limit myself by setting the pace (which may be good at times) and partly because I feel like my strides are shorter on the treadmill.

Bill January 16, 2013 at 3:55 pm

Outside…it seems forever to just run a mile on a treadmill. you can always use a fan to cool you while on the treadmill. Outside, you actually have to propel yourself forward. I am told that you have to use a 1% incline to equate to outside running…but I will take almost any weather condition(s) and be outside over the treadmill. Just my humble opinion though….

Oh treadmills…. they’ve actually saved me since having kids. The majority of the running I do is on them. I like to distract myself with bad reality TV or romantic comedies. Ha ha. I need to go to one of those classes.

Treadmills are definitely harder! I feel like I set it for a certain pace and don’t want to turn it down for fear of looking like a wimp!

Reply

Karen @ Runner Girl Eats January 16, 2013 at 3:57 pm

I tend to run faster outside but sometimes I just want to zone out on the mill and not worry about cars or tripping. I think the treadmill is definitely harder mentally too.

I tend to feel guilty when I run on the treadmill, like it makes me less of a runner or something. I know it’s not true, but so many running people seem to look down on treadmill running.

Thanks for your post. It makes me feel better about avoiding cold dark mornings for zoned out news-filled runs :)

I struggle sometimes on putting in miles on the treadmill — I miss having the wind in my face to cool me down. If there is a good show on then that can keep me going, but I definitely run slower when I’m on a treadmill.

I have a PaceMaster that has ran beautifully for 12 years and counting. I heard that it is best to get a treadmill that has the same “hardness” as asphalt because if you run all winter on your “soft” mill , then you run a big risk of getting shin splints when you hit the asphalt again in the spring bc the musles in your shins weaken. A treadmill sales guy told me this, makes sense to me! I have thankfully avoided any shin splints in my years of treadmill and outside running.

I loathe the TM. I would much rather run outside to keep my mind occupied. However, I HATE the cold more than the TM and I only run outside if it’s warmer than 32….which in Ohio happens rarely in Nov-March. When I do run on the TM I try to read on my kindle app or watch a show I really like to keep my occupied. I run faster times outside for some reason. I think it’s all mental.

Reply

Laura January 16, 2013 at 4:35 pm

For me treadmill running is easier, but most likely because I don’t mix it up. I like running outdoors better because of the environmental factors that keep me from zoning out – and it always feels like my muscles get more of a workout on pavement.

“Thinking about slitting her tires”- you are too freaking funny- or not(?)

Reply

Kim January 16, 2013 at 4:48 pm

I do most of my running on the treadmill. I always set the incline at 1.5% or even higher if it is more of a jog. I think the worst part about the treadmill is that you lose all ability to pace yourself. Years ago (before kids and the treadmill became part of my life) I could go for a run and know almost exactly how far it was based on my time (I always measured to make sure!!!). Now, when I run outside, I have no clue until I measure (I don’t own a Garmin because I run on TM usually). I have big plans to try and convert back to an outdoor runner over the next year (except in winter!) so maybe I need a Garmin!
Sorry for the long post……Blah, blah….I got carried away!

Reply

Heather @ Better With Veggies January 16, 2013 at 4:55 pm

I know the rule is that it’s technically easier (hence the incline) but I have always found them harder for me. I think it’s the lack of air circulation at most places. But that said – I have been a big fan of the treadmill recently and am dying to get one of my own. It’s a great tool for training through the winter AND for forced pace drills year-round. :)

thewhineyrunner January 16, 2013 at 4:59 pm

I just can’t hack it on the treadmill. At the longest, I can handle about 45 minutes to an hour, and even then, I usually only average about an 8:15 mile average. I think you’re right about the mental toughness required for running on the treadmill though. For now, I’ll stick to running outside as much as possible.

Reply

sarah @pickyrunner January 16, 2013 at 4:59 pm

I got in eight miles today. Miserable, let me tell you. I’d rather run outside in -20 degree weather than spend another hour on the treadmill.

Reply

Erin January 16, 2013 at 5:02 pm

I’d think it was easier except that I have such a terrible time running on TMs. I like seeing the world rolling away behind me along with the miles. When I run on a TM, I generally end up staring at the time or distance. I’m bothered by the fact that I am running but not actually going anywhere. I’ve put a towel over the screen, but that doesn’t seem to do it for me. I can’t tell if this is just some weird OCD quirk or what.
That being said, I read somewhere recently (I wish I could remember where) that a 3% incline mimics general outside running. Whatevs. Even at 0% I still hate the mill.

Reply

Courtney January 16, 2013 at 5:07 pm

I love speed work and intervals on the treadmill, it’s like, if I set that belt for a certain speed and a certain time, I’m running it. I have too much pride to jump off or turn down the speed. ;) I hate running long distance on it, I’d rather use the Step Mill.

Angela January 16, 2013 at 5:21 pm

Personally the treadmill kicks my butt! I ran 3 miles on it yesterday and about died. It forces you to run the same pace and I always get really hot. I normally trail run but occasionally I will run on the mill just to change things up.

Reply

Bri January 16, 2013 at 5:25 pm

I like to run outside but log most of my miles on the treadmill. It’s simply too dark to safely run outside right now. I’ll probably end up spending most of my training cycle inside.

Reply

Melissa @MyPeachLife January 16, 2013 at 5:34 pm

I usually don’t enjoy the treadmill but lately I have loved running my sprints on them. When I run sprints outside I tend to cheat by slowing down toward the end but the TM keeps my honest.

Depending on the treadmill. If it’s kind of ctappy and bouncy, it feels harder. If it’s more firm, it’s probably a little easier. I never noticed treadmill elasticity until I start half marathon training on them. Now I can’t ignore it! Our gym has some really crappy treadmills, so it was easier to notice.

Liana@RunToMunch January 16, 2013 at 5:46 pm

I do all my runs except for weekend runs on a treadmill and it works out okay. I get a little dizzy running too fast on the mill so I usually run on a 2 or 3 incline for slower speed. Only crappy part is that it builds up my stupid giant man calves!

I find that for me, running on a treadmill is harder. I think it’s definitely a mental thing, but I struggle to do speed and tempo work on a treadmill, and then breeze through it outside (on harder terrain). When there is something good to zone out to on TV, I don’t think it’s as hard as I normally find it, but it’s still always a big struggle for me.

I think I might be in the minority, but I can’t run as fast on the treadmill! I like treadmills for speed work and 9 months out of the year. It is COLD in Idaho.

I’m with you, I’m a weenie when it comes to running outside in cold weather, so to the treadmill i go. But if its nice out, I prefer to hit the pavement. Treadmill is easier for me because I tend to mix it up with pace and incline, but outside my runs seem to fly by because I’m not staring at the time on the display :)

Robin January 16, 2013 at 6:09 pm

I have to do all my weeknight runs on the treadmill because of childcare, but try and get out on the roads for my long runs on the weekend (which is mostly, but not always, possible). The treadmill is harder for me, way harder. I have it set up in front of a TV but even that doesn’t help. I find it mentally challenging to get through the runs. I would much rather run outdoors, in any conditions (and I’m in Canada), then run on the mill. I am however thankful that I have it, or I wouldn’t be able to run at all. (I have run 8 marathons and BQ’d with this method of training).

Rachel January 16, 2013 at 6:12 pm

For me, the treadmill is a huge mind game… I try to vary my speed a bit, but I just get so bored, even when I watch TV. I also find that I get warm quickly inside. I live in Wisconsin, so I train for my half marathons through the winter… you run outside in zero degrees, snow, sleet, rain, etc. It keeps me alert to run outside and I find it easier! :)

Great topic! I’m a fairly new runner and at first I loved the treadmill. ….until I trained for my first half outside. For me the treadmill is mind over matter. It just seems soooo hard. I often remind myself that if SR can run 30 on one then I should be able to suffer through 3-5:)

In addition to avoiding dark or snowy runs with treadmills, I enjoyed using them for speed training. After years of using them, several marathons, and maybe just some bad luck, I developed a labral tear in my hip. My surgeon told me to never step on a treadmill again post-surgery because they change your gate a little and pull on your hips if you’re a heel striker (making injuries more likely again). I am not a medical professional and don’t think all orthopedic surgeons share the same opinion, but it might be something to consider if you have options or injury-prone hips! I do miss an occasional treadmill run, though!

I can’t stand treadmills. Something about the wobbling of them bothers my shins. Or maybe I’m just a weirdo. Luckily, I live in Arizona where you can get a run in reasonably most days of the year. Except when it’s 120. Then I just lay around sweating and call it a workout.

I have that treadmill!!!!! My hubs got it for me last Christmas and I had no idea! He wrapped up the water bottle and heart rate monitor that came with it and has the treadmill already set up in our basement. To say I love it is an understatement. It is the 3rd treadmill I’ve had because I’ve worn the other two out-hopefully this won’t be the case with this one. I don’t think it will…it’s super tough and AWESOME!

Jean January 16, 2013 at 7:20 pm

For me, treadmills are SO MUCH HARDER, not just mentally but physically as well. My “zoning out” pace outside on flat, snow-free ground is roughly 9:30-9:45/mile, but trying to run 6.0 on the treadmill has me gasping for air after only a couple of minutes. It depends on the treadmill, though-on my terrible home treadmill I seriously have to run at about 5.2 mph or I won’t be able to last longer than 5 minutes, but on others it’s closer to 5.7 or 5.8…

Reply

Jina January 16, 2013 at 7:25 pm

I burn up on a treadmill. Maybe that’s because the condo association is cheap and doesn’t sufficiently cool the gym. I also find it so much more mentally challenging to run indoors. I definitely have to try to stay entertained with TV and changing the speed and incline.

I can’t, can’t, can’t do a treadmill – but hey, if it works for you, go for it! My only concern is that you certainly build different muscles. The belt motion is not only hard on your joints, it takes the quadricep out of use.

I can’t run on treadmills! Have this phobia of falling off after it happened a few years back. Running outside allows me to adjust my stride, footfalls, slow down etc when I’m feeling unstable or can’t feel the ground momentarily (I sometimes get blocked nerves and can’t feel my feet).

Maria January 17, 2013 at 2:57 am

The treadmill is harder for me mentally as well, way too easy to get off and stop and find an excuse to go get something from upstairs. But it’s all I got during the week, on the weekends I try to get outside while the husband is home with the girl child…gotta find the balance. Good luck with your treadmill saving!

I much prefer to get outside, but when the weather outside isn’t safe for a run, I hit the tready. I also hit the tready for speedwork workouts. I have a great one I’ve been using that took 2 minutes off my 5K time in just 1 month!

I love my treadmill because it means that I can’t ever wuss out on a run, but I definitely think it’s tougher and more enjoyable to run outside. On the treadmill, it’s a constant mental battle to keep going. Plus, when I go outside, I can bring my dog.

Kailin @ Logs and Thoughts January 17, 2013 at 5:22 am

I much prefer running outdoors, but I’m a wimp too and spend most of January and February on the tready. I definitely run faster outside when I don’t have all the numbers to look at and just go — somehow all those stats get into my head and I *feel* slower, like I’m not capable of running faster, when I’m on the TM. But like you said, when it’s either don’t run or run on the TM, I head to the gym and get the miles in.

It’s been much easier for me when I decide to “race” the people next to me. If they’re going faster, I increase my speed slowly to try to reach theirs. If they’re going faster, I make my stride the same as theirs so that I can convince myself it’s not really as hard because I’m only working as hard as they are and look at their speed.

I totally agree with you…I find the treadmill a little boring at times and there in lies the mental toughness to get through your run on the treadmill. I run faster and farther outside. I love that you wrote about this because I’ve written about it as well! It’s strange because some days it’s much harder to run on the TM (mentally) and some days I zone out and it’s easy breezy.

I get really bored easily so per your recommendation I like to do speed work and switch up the speeds so that I don’t get bored and always feel like it’s a challenge. I ran 4 hard miles yesterday, but it felt like it only lasted 10 minutes which was great!

I do need to get better about adjusting the incline though because I keep it on 0%. I guess I could go up to .5% and then work my way up..baby steps.

Overall though I think once you get to a point in your training that the treadmill and running outside are about the same when it comes to hard/easy. At first I thought it was easier to run on the TM because when I would go outside I couldn’t run as long, but once I got better they both felt the same to me!

Funny you posted this now. I have been back on the treadmill for a few weeks now since an unfortunate (aka stupid) run in with frostbite and my ear (no worries, its getting better…I will NOT look like an elf for the rest of my life). I have found that speed work, i.e. tempo runs and ladder work outs I do better with on the dreadmill since I can watch the time easier and control my speed. Put in a DVD I could never watch with the the children around and let it go. Long runs, outside for sure or I might lose my mind.

I prefer to run outside. I feel like its easier and that I’m faster. I started on the treadmill but now I have a mental block and can’t even run a mile on the thing. It doesn’t hurt, I just feel like its harder to run as fast as I do outside and I don’t understand it.

I wish I could run on the treadmill though, since this cold is getting on my nerves.

I am not a fan of the treadmill, and I would rather run in rain, cold, fire and wind than on my treadmill!
My treadmill miles are also significantly slower than my outdoor ones- I regularly run 9-9 1/2 minute miles but on the treadmill I die trying to hold a 10 minute mile.

Depends whether or not you know your pace outside and how much you are willing to push on a treadmill. A runner can get a fabulous workout on a treadmill by running faster on it than outside. I’m not talking mega faster, just slightly faster, where you feel you have to work to keep up, add an incline and you get that much better of a run.
If anyone finds a treadmill easier than running outside, they are obviously not running hard while on the treadmill and using it as a whimp out to an outdoor run.

For me, running outside is much easier.

Treadmill running is more physically challenging, but it is definitely more of a mental struggle. If I set out to do 8 miles outside, I know I can’t quit halfway through because I’m still 4 miles from home. I need to finish somehow! If I set out to do 8 miles on the treadmill and it gets tough, I know I can just push “stop” and hop off. It sometimes becomes a mental struggle to keep going on the treadmill.

Running on the TM definitely seems harder to me…both from a mental and physical standpoint. I would so much rather be outside. Plus, I work inside all day and love that time to get OUT.

I prefer to run outside most of the time, but this cold weather has seriously made it hard to breathe, so I sometimes would rather be on the TM.

treadmills intimidate me. I worry that I will step on the edge and lose my footing and collapse down in pile in front of the entire gym. When I run outside, I think I go faster as I don’t watch a clock at all. And it let’s my Phoebe from Friends running take charge! :)

I so much more prefer to run outside and I need to stop being a super wimp, dress properly and just get out there and do it. I think the treadmill has helped with some “speed work” as far as I can claim to have speed!

Agree with running slower on the treadmill. I think I take longer strides when I’m outside because according to my treadmill I struggle to keep a 10:00/mile pace.

That being said I have the best treadmill that one cold buy at Walmart a few years ago (quality I’m sure) and thought it was ok. Then I ran on one at the wellness center two days ago for the first time… Holy cow!! I’ve been missing out!! I hate running on my treadmill but I’m actually excited to go back to theirs! It was so nice, and the built in tv beats the usual staring at the wall I usually do.

I live in Northeast Ohio and I am a cold weather wimp, so I run a lot on my treadmill. I am also trying to increase my pace for this year, so the treadmill helps with that.

I DESPISE the dreadmill. I used to not mind it at all and even did some long runs on it when the weather was less than ideal…now I’ll take cold and pouring rain or snow over the thing. I just get so bored and hate staying in one spot for that long of a time!

Is this even a serious question?? The tm is about 1,004,082 times harder for me. It is pure misery. I just ran in 25* weather to avoid the tm and even enjoy this weather the most for running!

Tried the treadmill workout from Runner’s world today to help increase my pace. Great workout….lots of sweat:) Thanks for posting the link!

I think it’s WORSE! I absolutely hate it. I too feel like I can run faster outside. It is just so easy to give in and slow down or stop on the TM. Plus, being outside is so therapeutic! But I totally agree that a TM runs beats no run:)

I have been saving up for a treadmill for a long time and my husband surprised me with the one I wanted for Christmas. I LOVE it. Of course, I love running outside most but I have a baby on the way so it may be the only way I get runs in soon. Right now it is my main form of exercise since the weather is FREEZING where I am at. I hope you get the one you want soon:)

I just got some compression socks, but was wondering what they do that is so helpful or what benefits do you notice from them? Hope you have a great LA trip!

Save your pennies for one of these. I have one and it’s great. I got it primarily because if the warranty. I like treadmill running once I get going, but I’d much rather run outside.

I got a treadmill a few months ago and I love having one! It is easy to hop on whenever I feel like it; I can do a quick mile to warm up for other workouts, or do a incline walk after eating dinner. I live in Wisconsin and I hate cold weather so it is pretty essential for me. :-) I do a lot of different treadmill workouts that vary incline/speed and they actually go pretty fast because you are constantly changing things up and your mind is engaged. Amy Dixon also has some great challenging Treadmill audio interval-type workouts. The worst thing about the TM for me is doing a long run, that does seem to just go forever.

I read that running on a treadmill seems harder because your brain doesn’t have a “reference” since you aren’t moving. So your perceived exertion is different. That is the case for me, I train with a heart rate monitor and I find that when I run outside my heart rate is higher, but it feels easier. It may also be that on the TM you feel that you are forced to maintain a certain pace, while running outdoors is a more organic process, you are able to run faster or slower based on how your body feels.

I find TM running so much easier. I didn’t realize how much easier until I started running outside last summer with a running club. OMG! I thought I was in good shape until then and we run on a pretty flat trail! I think it’s because I don’t have to make any effort to pace myself on the TM but outside it’s all me. I live in MN though and am a big wimp when it comes to winter running so I do all TM runs in the winter and mostly outside runs the rest of the year.

I have a love hate relationship with the treadmill.. I don’t have to deal with allergies of the outside but its so DULL! I try to watch the TV at the gym but somehow it always weirdly ends up being on sportscenter or the food network.. this girl cannot watch about food while running!
