Barre Mania

by SkinnyRunner on January 5, 2013

WORKOUT -

(Yesterday)

Ran outside –

7.0 miles/60 mins

easy

(today)

Ran outside early -

7.0 miles/64 mins

easy but felt hard

Xtend barre class -

55 mins

Walk w/ dog – 2 miles

I’m feeling so much better after getting over this cold, but I feel like I have no endurance whatsoever!  I couldn’t even keep a 9 min/mile pace this morning on a 7 mile run.  Oh well, I can always become a competitive speed walker…

Since turning the dirty 30 a couple weeks ago, I’ve been thinking that I need to start doing some strength training again or at least something besides just running because it’s all downhill after 30, right?

002 (528x800)

So after my run I went to an Xtend barre class at 8:30 this morning taught by my friend Bri.  Since the last class I went to was on Halloween (dressed as a French maid), it was high time I got back into it.

I ended up buying a week pass so I’m going to try to hit it hard next week and go to like 1000 classes.  That should work out well.

Glad you’re feelin better – everyone is sick around me!

One of my goals for the new year is to hit the weights – consistently!! I think I might toughen up and face a bodypump class to get me started.

I don’t really remember my “dirty 30′s” but I can tell you that (for me) life has gotten better as I’ve gotten older. My mid-to-later 40′s have been mostly great. Sure, the ol’ metabolism has slooooowed down but Life Is Good!

I just tried my first barre class today too and it was not what I expected at all! I’m realizing I could benefit from some Solid strength training

Welcome to your 30′s. Some things get a bit harder in your 30′s, but life and my confidence in myself have been sky high in my 30′s. I feel so much more me and comfortable with me. I’m able to handle knowing what I need to work and improve on, but be pretty darn happy with what I’m working with. I’m closer to 40 than 35 and have noticed it takes longer to drop the holiday lbs, and I can’t do two a days, sometimes can’t even run or workout back to back days let alone do both in the dame day. But, I’m still running strong, actually getting faster, and still setting pretty lofty running goals (for me anyway). Embrace it and enjoy it is what I say!

i definitely feel so much more comfortable in my own skin (as clique as that is) now than in my early 20s. ive left of the need to be something else rather than just myself. and i gotta say, its better than that dang fast metabolism i used to have :)

Wait, what’s wrong with Hobby Lobby?

I love being 30+. You get to move up a column in all the surveys that ask you to fill in your age bubble.

Target has awesome blank cards in bright colors. 200 for under $15. Perfect for stamping.

I love Hobby Lobby as well!

I live in such a small country town that we don’t have a barre class. I would love to attend one but looked online and there are none around.
I am having the best time of my life right now in my mid thirty’s. I just started running last year and will complete my first marathon next Sunday. (I hope) I just have to tell myself I am not the Skinny Runner because if I keep a 10 minute pace the whole time I will be thrilled!

There is a barre studio opening up in my town this month. I cannot wait to try it out. I took ballet for years & my legs were always so toned because of it. I’ve heard it’s far more intense than a normal ballet warm up though. Good luck cramming in as many classes as possible this week!

I have been wanting to try a barre class. I need to add some strength training to my current cardio heavy routines. Glad you are feeling better but if your pace never improves you could always just run in the back of the pack with me :)

Jenny January 5, 2013 at 5:44 pm

I agree life improves. I have never been fast. I cannot compare myself to you either. You are like a speed demon. I am way over your slowest! But I keep sticking with it. Also love barre I want to get there more too!

Yay Hobby Lobby! Love and support them! :)

Age is only a number! As long as you don’t look and feel it ;) I am creeping up on 30 myself.

I don’t even know what a barre class is, but I’m training for my first half and have decided to add at least 1 day a week of strength training to my running schedule. I have no idea if 1 day a week will make a difference, but I’m guessing its better than none.

Also I would like to add that you have me hooked on Target. We don’t have one where I live at, but I got a gift card so I made the trip yesterday. OMG They have so many cute cheap clothes!! Way more than my measly gift card could afford! I ended up getting my first pair of black running capris. I’m sure Target brand isn’t the top of the line, but they look good on me and were comfy on my run this morning.

One of my goals for this year is to be able to do a pull up, so I need to work on upper body strength. I enjoy a good strength class, as long as it doesn’t require choreography, leg warmers or ’80s music.

Can’t be supporting Hobby Lobby right now. They have 21,000 employees that may not share the same values as the owner.

Glad to hear you are feeling better. I have heard how hard core those X-Barre classes are.

No Barre over here; would love to give it a try. My cross training include strength training, yoga and the dreaded elliptical.

I love weight training. I feel like a slacker if I don’t weight train about 3x a week. Saturdays are typically just run days but rest if the week will be running plus some sort of strength train.

Totally weight train. That’s all I used to do. Then at 35, after 2 kids, I came back and sorta reinvented myself fitness wise and got into running (eek, at 35!). …and I should have gotten the running for dummies book because after the said 2 babies, my core was shot and I didn’t care. I wouldn’t wear a 2 piece anyway, right? WRONG. Core strength, especially for running, aint’ about the aesthetics. It’s the power house and nice abs are only the byproduct. Hello injury! You’d think I’d know this after years of weight training. Anyway, welcome to the world of continual therapy, acupuncture, etc. I’ve learned my need for weights and core strength for running the hard way.

You will definitely come back once fully recovered. If it makes you feel better, you can speed walk, ninja-kick my arse -with me on a good day of running. Take it easy on an old lady, LOL!! Get well soon!!

Kim January 6, 2013 at 8:44 am

Glad you are feeling better!!
Pretty sure you have a few more years before things start “falling apart!” I think 35 was when I really had to step up – running alone didn’t cut it then (plus, older = more injuries…)
You’re still young!!!

Glad you’re feeling better. You’ll be running your super speedy runs in no time. I don’t know about it all being downhill after 30..I’m in my late 30′s *gasp* and I think I’m a more improved version of myself. LOL

Barre rocks – I started this fall after I got a living social and didn’t want this one to expire too (yes I am that girl).

I torture myself early in the morning and just when I think it sucks the class is over. Being a runner/walker and training for my first ever Full Marathon it was a nice compliment to my leg work out. I don’t get on my toes as much as others as my legs are usually beat from the training I am doing. I try to push the weights harder and core stuff as well. I like it because people comment how “good” I look but yet nothing on the scale has changed so it has to be barre.

I chronicled this Living Social experiment that has turned into a 3 day a week obsession. http://greenlakegirl.blogspot.com/2012/09/morning-cup-of-barre.html

Barre On People its a nice low impact ninja workout and people do see results which is what keeps me coming back for more. I also think this workout helps when you are in a funk, not feeling well or just need some good old fashion stretch time.

I defiantly recommend it AND if you find a salon that has a living social or groupon – seriously what do you have to lose? A few hundred bucks a month when you become addicted – the first one is usually free… :D

I’m trying out my first barre class next week since 2008 (an actual ballet class then)! In the meantime, I’m prepping by doing the Booty Barre DVD. Loving it so far! Ballet-type workouts are excellent for runners. The time during that last ballet class I had injured a knee during a race and though I was fearful of jumping and jetes, the adductor work was exactly what I needed and I felt no pain whatsoever. =)
