Yesterday was a blogging day of silence so I stepped away from all social media for the day to show my support in a very miniscule way for those who’ve been so tragically affected in the Connecticut shooting.
{Edited to Add: Please send donations to United Way of Connecticut instead of Scentsy}
Reader Ranae sent an email about a way to support the children of Sandy Hook Elementary:
“In light of the horrible tragedy in Connecticut , Scentsy consultants are coming together to try to do something neat for the surviving students upon their arrival back at school after the holidays.”
“Our goal is to have a Scentsy Buddy sitting on the desk of every student upon returning to school next month (and hopefully excess for siblings and friends that were also impacted). A fellow Scentsy consultant who teaches at Sandy Hook is collecting the donations since we are unable to send directly to the school during the investigation.”
“Scentsy Buddies are currently BUY ONE, GET ONE FREE, so your donation would be going to two children at Sandy Hook Elementary. If you order, please order from the “Buddies for Sandy Hook Elementary” party on my website. All hostess rewards will be used to donate additional Buddies to the students.”
“My website is http://www.wicklessrusk.scentsy.us if you need any help when ordering please let me know. To get the buy one get one free just type in BOGO into the search bar.”
Ship to:
Heather Bishop
9 Goldmine Rd
New Milford, CT 06776
“Thank you so much for helping support these students and this community during this horrible time. Please continue to pray not only for Newtown, CT, but our nation as a whole.”

YESTERDAY
Yesterday was also my 30th birthday; thanks to all (Margot!) for the birthday wishes.
I rang in my third decade the only way I knew how: shedding some tears over my 20’s, staring at my wrinkles in the mirror and running 30 miles…
on a treadmill. Never said I was smart.
{My view for 4 hours and 5 minutes.}
It was raining and storming and windy and plain nasty outside so I went to a local gym and started running at 6:30am. This is what the run looked like (the treadmill restarted after 65 minutes):
65 mins/8.05 miles - 8:04 pace
65 mins/8.05 miles – 8:04 pace
65 mins/7.9 miles – 8:13 pace
50 mins/6.0 miles – 8:20 pace
I didn’t have any music to listen to, but at least there was TV so I watched the news the whole time, most of which was special coverage from Connecticut.
I came home and iced like an Alaskan would, with frozen halibut fillets and banana Nuun, thanks to Sarah:
I don’t post many pictures of my family on my blog anymore, but I had to include this shot my SIL took of my brother and I from last night:
Happy birthday to my 3 year older twin! (We share birthdays)

Happy 30th! Wow, your 30 on 30 is inspiring.
Happy Birthday, SR! Hope you had an amazing day! Welcome to the 30′s.
Happy birthday!!!!! If I were to ever run 30 miles…on a treadmill…I’d need endless supply of snacks, a bigger TV, Jillian michaels (or skinny runner:) screaming at me to finish (starting at about mile 5) and probably a 1 million dollar check at “the finish line”. That being said, WAY TO GO!!!!
Happy Birthday SR!! I think you are going to love being in your 30′s! I feel like I’m having the best time of my life & it only get’s better.
30 miles on a treadmill!? You are a machine. Great job!
Happy Birthday! I think it’s cool that you ran 30 miles for the big 30, makes me want to try 22 miles on my 22nd B-day!
Happy 30th birthday! I hope the rest of your day was great too! I’m so impressed that you were able to run 30 miles on the treadmill– you are amazing. Way to keep up he pace too. All the best for your first year in the 30′s!
Happy birthday! 30 miles on a teadmill? Wow!
Happy Birthday and welcome to the “dirty thirty” club. Not really sure what that means, but my friend inducted me a year ago when I turned and I thought I would induct you!
Thanks for sharing the Sandy Hook info as well.
Happy Birthday! I can’t bring myself to run 3 miles on the treadmill…but 30!? Amazing.
Well if you are going to do it, you might as well over-do it! 30 miles?!
Happy Birthday and may this be the beginning of the best years of your life. The 30s are sooo much better than the 20s in my opinion.
Damn girl! Way to rock 30 treadmill miles! So inspiring
And, Happy B-day!
30 miles on the treadmill?!? WOW, that’s awesome!! I turn 30 on Sunday and might run 3 miles…. wish I could do 30
Hope you had a great birthday!
Happy Birthday!!! 30 on the treadmill is amazing. One strong lady. Hope your day was incredible.
Happy late Birthday SR!!
Wow, 30 on a TM? I can barely get through 4 without getting so bored I start to think of any reason I can get off and do something else! You are so awesome!
Wow- happy 30th!!! I cannot believe you ran 30 miles on a treadmill! I bet people thought you were crazy to keep seeing you on there hour after hour.
University of Connecticut (UCONN)
Has started a scholarship fund for all the kids, siblings and dependents of the teachers. UCONN security is also helping out the town.
As someone who lives in Connecticut, its so sad. Our schools will never be the same.

Happy Birthday! I’ve considered running my age on my birthday, but I can’t say I’ve thought about doing it on the TM. Nice work crazy lady
You are such an inspiration! Happy 30th!
Happy Birthday!
( I didn’t want to include something so happy with something so sad)
Btw, congrats on 4 hrs on the treadmill. I am amazed/envious at the amount you run and your insanely quick recovery after marathons!
Happy Birthday! You don’t look a day over 24!
Happy 30th to you!! Yesterday was my husband’s 30th birthday too! He did not, however, celebrate by running 30 miles. I think he ate the equivalent of 30 cupcakes instead. Ha! I like your choice of celebration. Congrats to you!
Holy cow! I’m impressed with the 30 miles on a treadmill. I’ll be 30 in 2 short months and I really doubt I could do that. Maybe just 3 miles, one for each decade
Happy birthday!
As a resident of Newtown and a past graduate of Sandy Hook Elementary, I wanted to say thank you for your thoughts.
Also, below is a link with plenty of information on other ways to give back to my amazing town and the families in it.

Welcome to your 30′s. It’s really the best decade. I promise. I guarantee it.
Ok, don’t hold me to anything, but for me, my 30′s (which I’m only a couple years into) have been really awesome.
Happy Birthday to you and your bro!
Happy (belated) birthday!!!! 30 on 30—verrrrry inspiring, lady!
Well, when you get to be 43…you start BIKING miles, not running them for your birthday!! LOL
Happy Twenty-Ten Birthday to you. I refused to use the word Thirty until I reached 35 and then you’re more worried about 40 than what Thirty-something sounds like
. 30 miles on a treadmill is seriously impressive – both physically and mentally.
WOW! That is awesome you did 30 miles on the treadmil. I will turn 30 in a month and half and I might just challenge myself to do this!
Happy belated birthday! That’s pretty awesome, 30 on 30! And on a treadmill. You are kind of a running rockstar.
Ahhh….. Happy Birthday friend!!!!!! 30 miles on a treadmill? You are silly.
Hope you just get to keep celebrating with your family while you’re there.
thank you! yeah i am pretty silly.
First.. Happy Birthday
Second… You go girl! 30 miles on a Dreadmill is awesome. I could nor would I ever have that kind of mental capacity. Very, VERY impressive!!
Happy 30th! I had to re-read that…30 miles on the TM…I guess you’re “that person” that ignores the 20 minute per machine limit…kidding…If I tried to run my age on a TM I’d have to miss the party it would take me so long.
yeah i was worried about a time limit so i asked the gym employee if it was ok actually. she said bc its such a small gym (in a warehouse in a really small town) that they dont have any limits. they only had 4 treadmills and for most of the time, i was the only one of any of them!
Girl! You are #Awesome! Feliz Cumpleaños my dear!
Did you plan to do 30 for ur 30?
Question: Why have you decided to limit your family pics on your blog? I don’t post any of my hubs per his request or other family. It’s pretty much a slew of pics of me and my boys.
Hope you had a tasty cake
Candy
thank you candy! yes i planned on ringing in 30 with 30 miles.
i decided to take a lot of the more personal stuff off my blog for privacy reasons and out of respect for other people.
This must be why I get error messages ALL the time when hopping around on your blog! That explains it!
yep, ive taken down a lot of posts that were more personal.
Good for you. I totally understand.
happy birthday!!!
You and EMZ need to get in a treadmill race!!!
dude there would be no race. she’d leave me in the dust.
Happy Belated Birthday SR!
We must continue to pray for tragedy that occurred. It is truly heartwrenching.
amen to that.
HAPPY BIRTHDAY!!!
I plan on 20 on the treadmill this weekend. Sounds GLORIOUS. treadmill <3
WOW! 30 miles and Happy Birthday!! I thought running a half on my 33rd birthday was a big deal. Welcome to the 30-something club. I have found Carrie Bradshaw was correct, the thirties are fabulous! Much better than the 20′s. Happy Birthday!!!
HOLY COW!! You are AMAZING! Happy Happy Birthday!!
Happy 30th birthday!!
Happy birthday! Mines tomorrow and you can bet I won’t be running 37 miles! Maybe 7
Happy 30th! You get better with age! Trust me, I should know, I’m 41! Anyhoo…life only gets better, so enjoy the ride.
Happy happy birthday!!! Hope it was a great day and there was a lot of bubbly for you!
Happy Birthday to you! You’re still a youngin’! I know all about the treadmill and long runs are hard! Well done.
Happy Belated Birthday!
To say you’re inspiring is the understatement of the century. Happy 30th Birthday!!!!
DANG! 30 miles in the treadmill. I can barely do a full marathon. Thus I certainly won’t try to run my age (treadmill or outdoors) on my next birthday….48!
Happy belated birthday.
Happy Birthday! Def gives me some kick in the butt when I get whiney over a 20 miler on the TM.
Hey, MY 30th birthday was yesterday, too! Happy Birthday!! Hoping this decade will be your best yet
happy birthday bridget!
thanks!
Happy belated 30th! Hope you had a dirty, flirty 30 celebration
Have you seen the plans for 5K to support the Sandy Hook families? https://www.facebook.com/groups/461566267213556
I had to read that about 3 times before I realized you REALLY ran 30 miles on the treadmill. Holy cow, woman!! You are a beast. duh, old news.
HAPPY BIRTHDAY!
Happy Birthday. FYI- Your blog is very inspiring. I thought I was crazy doing most of my first half marathon training on the treadmill. Do all treadmills cut off at sixty five minutes? It is super annoying to me and I have been trying to figure out a way around it for some time now. I enjoy the treadmill since it’s better on my knees, safer, and climate controlled. I can’t imagine it with no tunes though. More power to you!
i think some might go to 100 minutes? all the ones i have run on at the gym(s) go to 60 minutes and then have a 5 minute “cooldown” so i just reset it after that. gives me a nice little break in between hours!
I never knew how old you were and always assumed you were younger than I (28), Happy Birthday! You still look like you’re in your 20′s;-) And you are a machine woman! Keep inspiring us:-)
Happy Birthday! What’s the secret to running 30 miles on a TM? I get so bored running more than 40 minutes.
Happy belated!
30 miles on a treadmill is cray but it’s your birthday and you can run if you want to.
I just did 8.25 on a treadmill last Friday and thought I was awesome, so way to show me up.
What??!?! That’s an amazing way to celebrate…just getting stronger and better all the time.
Happy Birthday!
Holy schnikees. 30 miles? That’s ridiculous. LOL! Way to make your milestone birthday memorable…with miles! Happy 30th!
You are cray! Happy birthday! Thirties are not so bad! I am halfway through them!
HAPPY BIRTHDAY!! I hope it was simply ahhh-mazing and that your 30s are even better than the 20s!
A ginormous WOW on your treadmill run. Crazyyy.
Is there a reason you don’t post fam pics anymore? I’ve been going back and forth on whether to post much pics of anyone else but me, and still haven’t made a clear-cut decision. lol.
Oops, I just read your reasoning up top
Wait what? Were you always planning to run 30? Rain kept you on the terrible treadmill? Why are you so crazy and so awesome at the same time? I just got a cramp thinking about the whole thing. Did you feel tired at any point during the ordeal? I get tired typing.
In other news, I knew there was a reason I liked you. ’82 babies are the most special in the world.
word to the 82 babies.
Happy Birthday!
Omg, I can’t imagine doing 30 miles on a tm…I have a hard time doing THREE miles on the TM. Crazy and impressive : ) You planning on 31 next year??
Happy birthday to you and your brother!! Could barely do 3 miles on the treadmill – amazing. I am thinking this May I will run for 40 minutes instead of 40 miles… ; )
Happy birthday to you and your bro. The 30 mile thing is pretty impressive
I feel sad about you having to take family photos down: I guess I prefer living in my warm fuzzy world. There’s so much positivity on your blog and the running community in general, it’s hard to accept that the bad stuff exists, if that makes any sense. I guess it’s all pretty senseless at the moment. Positive thoughts and prayers to everyone. x
i know, its a bummer but yeah. i guess thats all i can say.
way off topic, but I was just ordering candy canes on amazon (for my middle child who mentioned a lack of peppermint in the house and I don’t want to go to the store AGAIN) and they have FANCY PICKLE CANDY CANES! And, although I never post here did think of you. WTH, I’m a pickle fan but just don’t know……
oh, Happy Birthday !
yes! ive heard about them but havent seen them IRL but really want to try some.
Happy Happy Birthday!!! You are amazing to run 30 miles. Wishing you blessings this birthday week and Christmas season!
Happy birthday! I love that you celebrated 30 with 30 tm miles. I know I’ve commented about this before, but my sister and I are also birthday twins, 3 years apart. I like to say that I’m the best b-day present she ever got
im going to go tell my brother that right now!
Happy birthday! You don’t look a day over 20
I reallyyyyy wanna try the banana Nuun!
i love banana stuff so i think its pretty good!
HAPPY BDAY SARAH!!!
congrats on running 30 miles, you are a machine.
If you want a belated bday gift, you can find a green Garmin 10 Giveaway on my blog (thanks to you
!!
whoop whoop! HAPPPPPY BIRTHDAY!!! You do NOT even look 30….but 30 IS the new 20 anyway. 30 miles on a treadmill is pretty insane…quite impressive sister! I was wondering about the family pics too….I’ve thought about taking some of my stuff off. It’s kinda scary all the info you can find about me from junk I put on my blog.
Anyway, hope you have an AWESOME day & have some Costco cake to enjoy!!
Dang girl – 30 on 30 is awesome! Well done and Happy Birthday. I love this whole post, it is very heartfelt and inspiring!!
HAPPY birthdayyy!! 30 miles on the treadmill? your amazing. And p.s you look 25 you need to share your beauty secrets haha
HAPPY BIRTHDAY! 30 miles on the treadmill? you are insanely inspiring! i start to want to die around mile 10.. way to go girl!
Happy Birthday to you. Runninng 30 miles on a treadmill sounds like excssive exercise to me. I only say this out of concern, as I really hope you are taking care of your body and not harming it with all the working out you do. Please honor your body and be kind to it.
Thanks for your concern Samantha.
HAPPY BIRTHDAY!!! Hope you had a wonderful day!!
Awesome on the 30 on the 30th!!
I do the same thing on my birthday! (except sadly, I’m old!)
Fun tradition!!
(and Happy Birthday a day late)
I’m a year behind you — so I’m glad I can follow your blog to find out how exciting 30 can be
30 miles though!? Crazy! God has surely blessed you with great health! Blessings in the year ahead.
Awww…happy birthday to you and your brother! Did you/do you like sharing a birthday? My youngest two are 4 years and one day apart. They both think it’s cool…but maybe that’s because they don’t share the actual day
I remember turning 30…it was one of my most fun birthdays
growing up we fought over who could have a birthday party on the weekend closest to our actual birthday, but now its just fun. (and im better at sharing and not fighting).
Happy Belated Birthday !!
30 miles on a treadmill awesome!!
Thanks for sharing the Scentsy challenge! It is a wonderful idea:)
Happy birthday!! I am so impressed with 30 miles on a TM, way to go. I just turned 30 also (end of November) but I did nothing so impressive. Well, growing a person inside of me feels like running 30 miles some times! I hope you have a wonderful holidays with your family. Best wishes!
30 miles in a treadmill!? The most I’ve done on a treadmill is 10 and I thought I was going to die of boredom. You’re amazing!
MY GOODNESS, Happy birthday! And I can’t imagine running 30 (or even 15) miles on a treadmill! You are amazing
Happy Birthday. Welcome to the world of 30! What an awesome way to spend your birthday by running your age. That is great. Congrats!
Happy Birthday, my fellow 30-er! I was hoping to do a ’30 for my 30′ back in May but ehh…that didn’t work out (kilometers are much kinder in this respect). Also, I totally respect your wishes for privacy of your personal and family life but wanted to let you know that I really did enjoy your posts that did include them. Your family is just lovely and I was really fascinated with reading about life as a fisherman in particular. Happy thoughts!
Happy belated birthday!!!
THIRTY MILES? You young whippersnappers are crazy!
p.s.: Not sure when I’ll stop putting “… from the Vegas Expo” to make sure that you “remember” me. LOL.
FYI, you might want to post the Scentsy thing… They are not accepting any kind of Scentsy buddies. All donations are to go to the United Way of CT. I sell Scentsy and just tonight Scentsy sent out an email about NOT trying to help by donating Scentsy Buddies. We are asked to not to do this. If we wanted to help we could donate to the United Way of CT.
I know we are all trying to help, but just for your FYI.
thanks for the information, i didn’t know that!
They said not to donate directly to the school. That they are still closed and not accepting donations at this time. So we are sending them all to a local near the school who will then take them there when the school decides to start accepting donations for the children.
happy birthday!
That’s cool that you and your brother share a birthday! My Dad and his sister share a birthday (in December) and then his two brothers also share a birthday (in the spring), and everyone is at least two years apart.
Try and stay dry while you’re in Oregon. All that rain is good duck weather…and for the record I use that expression for all rainy weather, not just rainy weather in Duck country.
Happy dirty 30!!!!!
Oh you know, ran 30 miles for my 30th birthday…NBD. You’re a rockstar! Hope your birthday was wonderful!
Yay!!!! I LOVE your blog, have been reading it forever and yesterday was MY 30th!!! Coincidence? Crazy! I however would’ve died if I tried to run 30 miles…
Happy belated 30th birthday! I love that you celebrated by running 30 miles!
Happy 30th! Hope it was great!
Happy Birthday SR! Have another great and blessed year ahead.
Happy 30th!! Just curious, did you consume anything during your TM run?
yeah i grabbed some random stuff from my moms house: a banana, a pack of fruit gummis and a clif bar and if i had had more, i would have taken in a bit more. and 4-5 bottles of water.
Hi SR,
Happy 30th Birthday! Sorry its a few days late but better late than not at all!
30 miles on a treadmill – nice work!
thank you maryanne!
hope you had an absolutely fantastic birthday!
you continue to be an inspiration all while being hilarious. keep up the great work and enjoy your family!

Happy Birthday!!! The 30′s are the best yet!
Hi! Just had to let you know of a strange coincidence… My birthday was also on Monday, and it was my 3-years-older brother’s birthday too! Weird. Hope you had a happy day.
happy birthday to both you and your bro. strange strange strange
Happy Birthday! You are my new idol for running that far on a treadmill. That is insane!! My personal record is 13.1 (the .1 was just to say I did a half-marathon – ha ha)
i would do the same thing!
Happy birthday! I turn 30 in August and you are such an inspiration to me. I only started running in June to prepare for the Tinkerbell 1/2. Super excited for my first half and I wanted to send you a quick comment to say thank you for helping me by sharing your life here on your blog
I ran 30 on my 30 too! Great minds think alike! Except it took me waaay longer than 4 hours and 5 minutes.
Happy birthday!!!
