It rains in Oregon! A lot!

by SkinnyRunner on December 16, 2012

WORKOUT -

Ran outside in the rain -

7.15 miles/60 mins

with Elmer the dog

Post-run I walked into the house announcing, “It’s raining outside!” to the surprise of… exactly no one.

Welcome to Oregon.  At least it’s really green here.

New Balance sent me their NBX Windblocker jacket (I’m wearing a rain slicker over it) and Windblocker tight that I tried out this morning.

gear

They both have some nice features like a lot of reflective stripes (that’s the first my outdoorsman dad noticed and said how it’s great for safety), waterproof and windblocking fabric, thumbholes, soft fleecey feel, etc.

The gear kept me warm and dry during my hour long run this morning and I wore the pants the other day in the rain while out cutting a Christmas tree…

legs

The only bummer is that I ordered mine online without trying them on and both the top and pants are a little too big.  The pants have a drawstring waist and even though they’re tight in the calves and thighs, they don’t stay up that well in the waist.  Oh well, but if you’re between two sizes, size down.

Thanks New Balance, for letting me test of your gear.  Elmer says he needs some waterproof pants too because he was cold and wet afterwards and had to warm up by the fire…

SALE

***If you’re still doing some Christmas shopping, everything at 26.2 Apparel is 10% off until January 1st.

And the zip front tank top is on sale for only $20 as well; I wore mine for the Chicago Marathon in October:

Are you a rain runner?

I have to admit, it wasn’t that bad once I was out in it, but I really didn’t want to leave a warm, dry house.  And I’m not really dying to head back out in it either.

I want to get a long run in tomorrow but might have to hit up the treadmill.

I don’t mind rain if I’m already out running when it starts but I lean towards bailing on a run if it is already raining before I leave. Maybe if I had better rain gear or old running shoes I didn’t care about I would be more apt to head out. But I guess if it rains every day, you don’t have much of a choice :) at least there’s a fireplace!

I don’t mind running the rain, some of my best runs have been during the rain. During my first and only full marathon it rain from mile 5-14 and it was an absolute downpour. Like rain running across the road downpour. You can see the sheets of rain in the pictures. It was crazy.

I will only run in the rain if it is race day or if I am already running and it starts raining. I do not willingly go out in it- I am too much of a wuss! I gladly run on the treadmill on rainy days!
Oh, and if it’s race day (and raining), my boyfriend hates to be near me, as I am quite cranky!!

I’m really not a huge fan of running in the rain, which is a shame since I live in the Pacific NW and get to deal with it all the time. What I’ve been experiencing lately is trying to run in the morning when it’s raining and pitch black dark outside – unforeseen puddles galore. It definitely always makes me 100x more thankful for that hot shower at the end!

I have friends who live in Eugene OR who cannot try hard enough to both get jobs out here in Scottsdale all bc of the rain! It was 42 degrees this morning when I started my race. Pretty sure I thought I was gonna die!

I run in the rain quite a bit living outside Portland. I decided no thanks today though, there is a limit! But I took a Barre Fusion class tonight and it was awesome! Might be my next favorite after running.

I’m a baby when it comes to running outside. If it isn’t 45 degrees or above and sunny, I’m inside.

If its a little drizzle or light rain I actually don’t mind it…the down pour though??? No thank you! ;-)

I love running in the rain but only if it starts raining after I’ve started running. I don’t mind going out in a drizzle and then getting pored on. What I love most is when drivers haul through the puddled throwing water up drenching me.

I really love running in the rain! Gives me a chance to wear rain gear!

As we were driving through Astoria today the burrito “artist” at Beach Burrito said you guys are getting the worst storm in 6 years. Hope the rain doesn’t deter you too much!!

I just had to do 10 miles in the wind and rain Saturday. I can’t wait until I get to run in the snow!

I dig the New Balance gear big time!
I live to run in the rain. I feel like a kid. It might rain on race day so I figure it’s also great to train in all weather types because ya never know what race day will be like.

It’s easy for me to say I don’t mind running in the rain because living in SoCal I only have to do it a few times a year. I think it would probably get old after awhile… I do feel like it helps distract me though so the time passes faster…

I would find running in the rain sooo hard! You look soaked! way to get out there, the gear looks nice!

I honestly don’t mind the rain–especially the light drizzly PNW rain. Surprisingly, it rains quite a bit here in the summer. But I will take rain over snow any day!

Nice job for getting out for a run in the rain. And good luck with getting out there tomorrow! Convincing yourself is always the hardest part — once you’re wet, I feel like it doesn’t matter so much anymore. Then you can put on nice cozy clothes once you get home!

Sue December 16, 2012 at 8:24 pm

Not much, if it’s raining before I start, I won’t do it; if it’s midway thru a workout (eg yesterday evening – 10 sets of the 272 steps of Batu Caves! Unfortunately my calves are now protesting!), I’ll finish the run/workout unless there’s lightning in the background.

Lisa December 16, 2012 at 8:46 pm

Yikes! That is a lot of rain happening there. This may be embarrassing to admit, but I’m super vain and hate the rain because it totally ruins my outfit plans and hair for the day…yah, it’s true. Hope it’s not raining during your next run!

Usually I wuss out and take my workout inside if it’s raining but today I had already made plans to meet a friend for a 2 hour run…and it was raining before we ever got started. Wasn’t so bad once we got going…I’ll even admit it was actually pretty nice… but once we stopped/got in the car to drive home/get back out of the car in the rain it felt kind of miserable. I would do it again though!

I live in WA so I have to run in the rain–a lot. I don’t mind running in mist or drizzle or light rain or showers (as you know SR, we Washingtonians have a lot of different words to describe rain), but running in regular, heavy rain sucks. I ran 10 miles in heavy rain this morning and it was fairly miserable. At least it wasn’t a 16 or 18 miler though! I start training for Eugene in January and it’s going to be rough doing long runs during our rainiest months.

I like running in the rain precisely because it feels that much better to shower and get snug after the run, and eat a ton of crap usually!!!

Reply

Heidi @ Artistandathlete December 17, 2012 at 6:59 pm

I concur! I always feel like I earned my warm shower if I was out in the rain. I love splashing up those puddles, and being muddy when I come home :)

I wear a baseball cap. Keeps my face and eyes dry so that I don’t mind the rain…

If it is a light drizzle, I love it. If it’s pouring, no way. But warming up after a rainy run is the best :)

I love running in the rain if it’s not freezing cold out, which it is today, so that should be fun.

I was actually looking forward to running in the rain on Saturday. It provides a little variety to running.

I’m fine if it starts raining while I’m out but if there’s rain before I head out…..I really dislike it! I’m not made of sugar and won’t melt but…..I can certainly be talked out of a rainy run. ;)

Hooray for the new gear to test while you are in Portland – looks like you will definitely need it!!!

Though SoCal doesn’t afford many opportunities, I’m a total rain runner…my only problem is staying on my feet and not rolling down hills in the rain :(

Reply

Kailin @ Logs and Thoughts December 17, 2012 at 6:57 am

I don’t mind running in the (warm) rain, but I typically will not start running outside if it’s raining. If I know I’ll get rained on, no problem. If I start out wet, it makes the whole run blah. Same with biking – If it’s raining I ride inside; if it’s going to rain I’ll ride outside.

Nicole@TheKidlessKronicles December 17, 2012 at 7:28 am

I am NOT a rain runner. Snow, sure. But I can’t stand it when my feet get wet.

The problem with New England rain is that when it rains it’s freezing! Rain, okay I can live with, cold okay I can work with, combined? Yes, I prefer to rough it out on the treadmill.

I don’t like running in the rain. It happens here sometimes. It rarely rains here in the winter. In the summer, we are normally finished by 6am and it doesn’t usually rain that early.

I don’t mind running in the rain once I’m wet, but I can be talked out of it easily. I ran the very windy & rainy CIM on Dec.2nd and had a blast, but I might have had a different experience if I was trying to PR or BQ(which I did BTW!).

I’ve never really ran in a downpour, but some light rain has never deterred me before..but then all I want to do is drink hot chocolate after, so it may be counterproductive!

I live in Seattle and am a rain runner by default. I was out in it yesterday for a lovely 6 miles and looked like I had been swimming rather than running :) For me a hat with a bill is essential in the rain!

LOVE running in the rain. I turn into an angry donkey if I can’t run in the rain. My Yorkie, like all good Yorkies, does NOT love running in the rain. Or doing anything that might cause her little tootsies to get wet.

Lindsey December 17, 2012 at 2:45 pm

I HIGHLY recommend wearing a baseball cap for running in the rain. It keeps the rain off your face for the most part so you don’t feel completely disoriented and makes the whole experience more enjoyable.

I haven’t run on a treadmill in almost a year. I don’t mind the rain once I get started. It’s getting out the door that’s the hard part. I will take cold or wet weather over heat any time!

Patty December 17, 2012 at 3:17 pm

I don’t really mind running in the rain. One thing I like about running in the rain here in No. CA is it usually isn’t as cold. This morning it was raining and 50 last week it was about 35 when I was going to head out.
My sister used to live in Portland, OR and she always said they don’t tan, they rust from the rain!

I don’t mind if it starts to rain while I’m running. I’m not a big fan of leaving the house in the rain. I can also handle running in the cold, and running in the rain, but not running in the cold rain.

I live in SE Alaska, near Ketchikan on Prince of Wales of Island, and we get about 180 inches of rain a year. My life of running consists of rain, rain and more rain! Not the hugest fan of it, but I’ve come to deal with it and it’s kinda nice as long as it isn’t pouring. Here also, we have a zillion different ways to descibe types of rain:)

I don’t want to run in heavy rain, but I think it’s perfect running weather when it’s overcast and misting.

Hey Sarah,
here in middle-europe its also raining and snowing a lot at the moment :( I want the summer back!
Unfortunately my Garmin is not water-resistant – how did you solve this problem? Do you hide it under your jacket?
And do you wear a hoody or a cap? How do you keep your head dry?
Wish you happy Holidays!

Reply

SkinnyRunner December 19, 2012 at 7:11 am

yes i wear mine in my jacket and dont check it and if i have another layer on underneath my rain jacket, i will wear it under that too.

if its cold, i wear a beanie and then rain jacket hood, but a lot of people have said a hat keeps the rain out of your eyes really helps.

I don’t mind running in the rain….. with the appropriate gear.

A must to wear a hat with a visor tho.
