How to make a (sorta) Elvis costume

by SkinnyRunner on December 6, 2012

On to the next costume already…

I’m trying to put something together for this race this weekend with this girl.

So this was my inspiration for Sunday’s race in Vegas:

untitled

I wanted to do “female Elvis” because I already had a white running skirt and didn’t really want to run in the pantsuit thing.

First, I started with a white tank top.  I went to Walmart and found this golf shirt and bought it for $15 because it was V-neck and had a little collar and the collar is the jam.  (They had cheaper white V-neck tanks for $8 but they didn’t have a collar.)

003 (800x674)

And then I started ironing on jewels all over the place for lots of bling.  I bought this iron-on design at Walmart for a little less than $5.  Of all the the sparkles, it was actually the easiest to put on.

004 (450x800)

008 (404x800)

I also bought a package of strips of rhinestones and added those to my collar and the hem of my skirt.  These were a little harder to work with and didn’t stick on as well; I had to re-iron them a couple times.

015 (491x800)

For the wide belt I bought some cheap gold fabric from Walmart.  I folded the seams in and glued it together and then glued more rhinestones and gems on it.

006 (397x800)

I was just going with “the more crap, the merrier” and gluing on as much stuff as I could.

010 (800x435)

I wanted a red cape but didn’t want to spend a lot of money on fabric and this red tulle was only .99 a yard at Walmart.  Unfortunately I think it veered a little more into bridal than cape so I’d probably use a different fabric next time.

Walmart’s fabrics, by the way, are much cheaper than JoAnn’s.  I went there to make my Minnie Mouse costume and spent a ton more on fabric and ribbon.  Like I could have bought part of Disneyland with how much money I spent.

013 (800x437)

{My big helper}

I tied the cape around my neck with an extra strip of fabric since I don’t know how to sew.  It would have been nice to have it sewn to the collar, but that’s way beyond my skillset and pay grade.

016 (800x661)

I also bought a couple sparkly necklaces from a party store for $2 but didn’t end up wearing them since it was so windy on race day.

bic

I tried to do a little pompadour and then layered a gold BIC band on top of a gunmetal one for extra sparkle.

And Pro Compression white socks – 40% off this month with the code SOM12.

013 (260x800)

{The worst Rock On sign ever}

Even with the super windy conditions, everything stayed in place and I didn’t chafe at all.  I was expecting to get some serious neck burn.

But a lot of spectators didn’t recognize me as Elvis.  Maybe if I was doing a half, I would wear a wig with sideburns which would definitely help, but I didn’t want to deal with my toupee flying off in the wind for 26 miles.

Anyone have any elf costume ideas?  Or just holiday costume ideas?

I TOTALLY get that it’s Elvis (I don’t know why others couldn’t tell). Such a cute costume, but yeah… with the cape, I’m sure running in the high wind wasn’t super fun :P
You still did amazingly with the sub-3:30 (while looking super cute in the costume!)

Fun and sparkly!! I love DIY costumes! They are so much fun to make. I’ve made so may different ones that I have a box full of material and ribbon scraps to use anytime I get a last minute idea. For some reason, although I am an obsessive planner, I seem to be more creative the night before the race. My hot glue gun and I are besties.

Not sure if your order them online but I just got an email with a coupon code for 30 % off Picky Bars. The code is “PICKYBARS”… original, I know!

Thanks for the shout out! #TeamGiraffe all the way! I just ran the Manchester NH Santa Shuffle on Saturday in a sparkly Elf costume – 3,000 santas, it’s easy to spot the green elf costume in race photos!

I wish I was creative! The best holiday themed running outfit I’ve seen so far is INKnBURN’s holiday sweater tech shirt and plaid skirt. It’s adorable!

Good call on ditching the wig. We ran a Halloween race once as Olive Oil & Popeye & my OO wig was so dang itchy! Bad idea. I second the sparkly elf idea, you’ll stand out!

First off, I love the coustume. So cute and fun!

A few days ago you asked what apps you should download. You def need to download the Jo-ann App! It has coupons and the people that ring you up will let you use all of the coupons that you can on that trip! Sometimes I get to use 3 or 4 at one time!

I got that you were Elvis! I’m not sure what wasn’t obvious about it! Love all the iron-on bling!

I’m doing the Santa Hustle next Sunday (the 16th) and the tech shirt they give you looks like the front of Santa’s coat so I think I’m going with that and I found a red (sorta-sparkly) skirt in the kids dept at Target that I think the XL will fit. But its gonna be cold and possibly snowy that morning so the shirt might get covered up with a jacket and I’ll be wearing black running tights so it could be an all-around fail. I need to see if I can attach the Santa hat to my running hat some how. They also give you a beard to wear. Double that I’ll use it unless its really cold and thn maybe it will help keep my face warm.

costume is fabulous, girl. the only thing that i think may have thrown people was the cape. it looked bridal. like you were in a bachelorette party. I woulda gone with a different fabric. but who gives a rip what i say about that! your race time in those conditions was awesome!! i am so inspired by your all out toughness, tenacity and perserverance. You never complain when things get hard. you just get to work and do your thang. kudos to you, sarah. you are a great role model. and in this day and age we need more of them. thank you!

Love the costume- in Austin we have a restaurant called Chuy’s (did you ever go there when you lived here?), and every year on Elvis’s birthday they have a big thing there for it- and if you wear an Elvis costume it’s free. My husband is slightly obsessed with Elvis, so we went to graceland a few years ago for a quick vacay (it was his 8th trip there) and I bought a costume- complete with jumpsuit, belt, wig, and sunglasses. And I get a free dinner on January 8 every year!

That’s a great Elvis costume! I once went to a holiday costume party as the sugar plum fairy from The Nutcracker. Basically just a purply/pink ballerina with Christmasy accessories. It’s not the most obvious costume in the world, but totally adaptable to a running outfit!

Uh – we so should have talked. Believe it or not I have a red silk cape…and a red cotton one. Only one of them is mine. Don’t ask.

Hey! I love your blog! I just wanted to say that I saw that you like the BIC headbands and I know of some that are just like it with the velvet on the inside to prevent slipping for cheaper…my track and cross country coach Jackie Ralph has a business called Glitter Girls Headbands and they make everything in their kitchen here in Springfield, IL not China! My sister is a state runner up two miler (Meredith McClain 2010) and she wears them in all her races so they never slip and they come in lots of colors…you should check them out at glittergirlsheadbands on facebook or their website! This is not spam by the way!

You needed those obnoxious Elvis sunglasses, but I guess that wouldn’t have worked too well with the 3 pm sunset…

How long did it take you to put it together? Never been one to wear or make a costume – I’ll probably take it off even before we hit the first km. ;p

Kari @ Running Ricig December 7, 2012 at 4:40 am

Since you told us it was an Elvis costume, I can’t see how it could be anything else, but I don’t know if I would have known had you not told us what it was. Does that sentence even make sense?

I’ve never worn a costume for a race.

Heh…that sign doesn’t mean “rock on,” it’s the devil horns, credited to Ronnie James Dio, the singer for the metal band Black Sabbath.
But the costume still rocks!

Laura @ sweatingforit December 8, 2012 at 1:15 am

I think you totally nailed the elvis look and it’s way more creative than just buying a prepackaged costume.

Jade December 9, 2012 at 3:35 pm

My friend said she saw you there and new you were elvis right away!
