Yesterday I ran my last marathon of the year, the Rock ‘n’ Roll Las Vegas Marathon that started at 3pm on the Las Vegas Strip.
And I dressed as Elvis:
Although no one really thought I was Elvis. homemade costume fail.
We headed down to the start at the MGM Grand around 2pm and had a little time to kill. Before jumping in my corral I met the very sweet Mendy who was running the half at 4:30pm:
And Kelly who was going to run but is injured, heal quickly, girl!
And Dorothy who’s originally from Ireland and has the most adorable accent. She was running her fifth marathon yesterday:
I hopped into my corral and was ready to run a fun marathon. A couple people had asked what I planned on running and I said a 3:30. I figured with a nice flat, fast course that would be really doable and not too hard. oh lordy, was I wrong.
The race started right on time and the weather was great: sunny and 70 degrees but cooling down. Oh yeah, there was wind. lots of wind. wind advisories:
Running in “gusts up to 45 MPH” won’t be that bad, right?
For most of the first 8 miles we headed up the Strip with the wind at our backs – these miles were SO EASY AND FUN. There were tons of people out cheering, you’re running by all the hotels and bright lights and a nice gust pushing you.
I wanted to start conservatively because I figured that at some point I’d be facing the wind so I was running 7:30-7:45 min/miles and felt like I was jogging.
RNR changed the course this year and it was a lot better and more interesting. In fact, they made quite a few changes and the whole experience was a thousand million times better than last year.
I didn’t have any problems with the corrals or getting out of the finish area or anything this year so cheers to RNR for fixing the problems.
I didn’t want to have digestion issues like last year so I think I went a little light on the food because I was hungry almost immediately after we started.
I’ll do another post on what I ate pre-race, but they were handing out gels at mile 7.5 and I ate it right away. I also brought a bag of Swedish Fish (300 calories worth) and grabbed another gel later in the race.
Around mile 8 we turned and ran through Freemont and hit some wind, but it wasn’t that bad yet.
At mile 9 we headed away from the Strip into a residential/commercial area. I ran the first 10 miles in 1:18, but then we hit more wind and mile 11 was my first over 8 min/mile.
I passed the halfway mark at 1:43 and just focused on getting through the windy miles and cruising through the miles where the wind was at my back.
Miles 13.5-16 were one long stretch into the wind and my mile pace went from 7:45 to 8:30. All I could do is put my head down and repeatedly tell myself, Move forward, not side to side.
Before I had run a few windy races (Gansett Marathon both years, Ragnar Vegas), I didn’t really understand how it could be so hard… just suck it and run harder, right?
But man, that strong headwind is tough. You have to push that much harder to sustain the same pace and that wears on you… especially when you look at your watch and the time doesn’t reflect your effort.
We turned around at 16 and had 2 fast miles with a tailwind before hitting the last seven miles facing the wind.
I passed mile 19 at 2:31 and thought, I have 59 minutes to run 7 miles and I don’t know if I can do it.
I pushed hard those last 7 miles and barely could maintain 8 minute miles. It didn’t matter which street or way we turned, it was all in the wind for that last hour. And man, it was tough.
Those were some of the slowest last miles that I’ve ran in a long time, but I gave it all I had and finished in 3:28:36, 23rd woman and 179th overall with an average pace of 7:58.
Like I said, the race itself was so much better this year and I had a lot of fun. It was a lot harder than I expected and it took a lot more out of me, but it’s all good.
Thanks again to Pro Compression for hooking me up with white Elvis socks, although I guess I looked like the white gaudy Liberace fairy godmother.

wind is kind of the worst, unless it’s at your back.
I love the costume1
amen to that, its terrrrrrrible.
Great performance, SR!
I enjoyed your recap and cannot wait to run a race close to that pace…I keep werkin’
Good job! I think your outfit looks like Elvis…good job for being crafty.
I didn’t run CIM however, I live a few blocks from the captiol! I walked and saw the runners finish. Amazing with the storm we had up here this weekend! I’ve also been thinking of buying Pro Compression socks. What size do you wear? Not sure how tight they should be. Thanks!
Wind does suck and I thought it only affected crew/rowing races! (Ex crewbie/newbie runner here!)
Also when does the code expire?
I ran the Vegas half as my 12th of of 12 for the year (awesome finale!) and 30th overall. I LOVED the course, but the last 3 miles in the strongest headwind I’ve ever experienced were brutal! I felt like I was running in place! However, I live in Sacramento so I thought of all my friends who ran through the storm that morning and knew it could have been a lot worse. Oh, and I love the pro compression socks I picked up at the expo!
You look fantastic!
Congrats on a GREAT finish and your last of the year and 178362 overall!!
What do you think of 3pm starts? I know you’re a morning runner, so was that hard(er) for you?
Nothing about me is a morning runner, so I would LOVE to find a late race one day!
I have been thinking of you Sarah! I watched last night on the computer the live stream from Channel Eight! :c) Was so neat watching the wave starts and then the Half marathoners start…I looked for you….soooooooooo many people…lol
They talked about how terrible the wind was…and all I could think was …hope Sarah has chapstick…
Your just amazing…truly an inspiration…Congratulations on your Last Marathon of 2012…..Rest yourself…you deserve that!
Happy and Proud for you!
Yo girl, congrats on speedy marathon, that’s a seriously impressive time with all that wind!! That wind sounds like it was no joke…so nice work on pushing through it.
Lovin’ the white socks…….pop on over to my Pro Compression giveaway to win another pair
i already did
oook my day was just made when I found your comment
Awesome Job on the race! I loved the costume as well! Totally Elvis I mean duh it is Vegas after all who else would you be?!?!?
I ran CIM and holy crap that weather was brutal. Congrats to you on the sub 3:30! And thanks for the Pro Compression discount codes – I am fully converted and have 7 or 8 pair already
The most impressive thing about this post is that you ran this whole thing with a cape around your neck. That would have drove me insane! Congrats on the last mary of 2012!
I was excited to run 8:30s in a 5k. lol! You did great! IDK what I would have done with all that wind! We never get wind in FL unless a hurricane is near. Cute costume!! Is that the gold bic band? I have it!
yep, i had a gold one on and the silver gunmental one under it.
I don’t know why it always surprises me when you run this race. For some reason I thought you were tired of doing it.
Glad to hear they worked out last year’s issues. I was afraid to ever go back after that finish line cluster. Now let’s see what that medal looks like, k?
Running in a wind is terrible, so you should be super proud for pushing through! At least it wasn’t cold and rainy to boot!
The costume doesn’t scream Elvis to me. I think you needed to have a black wig to round it out.
Congrats!!! It def. it now on my bucket list especially if they changed up the course from being super boring.
Will you have a coupon code for us when Pro Compression comes out with their holiday socks?
yes i will definitely get it for you!
39 marathons in 3 years!? Girl, you amaze me! Great job running in the wind. That really makes it a million times harder.
Holy cow I got tired just reading your recap. I don’t think people understand how difficult it is to run in windy conditions. Gusts to 45! Insane! Way to run hard and finish strong
Miss ya!
Yep, wind is the worst!
Holy crap. I have talked about the headwinds at the Hoover Dam race but DAMN (pun intended). That is rough.
The Kidless Kronicles
Congrats on the great race. I’d also like to hear your thoughts on the late start time. I think I would be sitting around all day waiting for it to begin and that would drive me crazy.
I am lovin’ the Elvis costume.
I hate running in the wind! Somehow, no matter what way I go, there is always constant wind on my local running routes. It’s the worst.
I don’t know how I’d feel about starting the run so late in the day. Good for you for such a great race even with the elements against you! Love the costume too!
Kudos on the outfit!!! You rock!
I was the crazy yeller at the 16 mi turn around (and was at breakfast last year at all American cafe in NY/ny) I could see your crazy tule from far away and knew you were Elvis as soon as I saw you. The first time I showed up to cheer. I had so much fun. Watching from the wheelchairs and the elites to the very last runner being pushed by the sweeper. People who looked strong and people struggling. The 10th place male was looking great but quit right at the turn. It was weird and sad. He asked where he could catch a cab. Anyways, I loved cheering and you look strong at the turn. I’ll probably run again next year.
thanks for being out there and cheering!
haha…love the costume, especially the cape, great touch!
ugh, sorry about running in the windtunnel there, those are the times when u wish u had some fit, 400lb sumo man to run ahead of u and break the wind.
Wow, girl you are really determined and disciplined in your running—that is really inspiring! I don’t have a passion for running, although I very much respect those who do. God bless you in all things and btw I think you totally looked elvis-y!
One of my friends ran the half and I was so tempted to join her, but the horror stories from last year’s logistics turned me off. Hopefully you’ll post some of those details tomorrow, I’m anxious to hear if it got better so I can run it next year!
Super duper job SR!
I ran Vegas too as my 4th marathon in 4 months and my last for the year. Man, that was rough! I had a PW but honestly, it’s all good! I feel better about myself having to persevere through an agonizing marathon than rocking an awesome one. Congrats on meeting your goal!
4 in 4?! that is awesome!
Good job!! my sister and I love your blog!! I ran Vegas rnr too….. My first race ever and my first marathon!! I’m no skinny runner but I finished in 4 hr 7 min………and yes the wind was a BE OTCH!!!!:-)
Good job!! my sister and I love your blog!! I ran Vegas rnr too….. My first race ever and my first marathon!! I’m no skinny runner but I famished in 4 hr 7 min………and yes the wind was a BE OTCH!!!!:-)
Congrats. Sounds like the perfect fun race to end the season with… well done! I feel your pain on the wind. I’m just moving to the south coast of England and will seriousy have to re-evaluate my ‘normal’ running pace. There’s some mighty wind down there.
Well done, that is a strong effort and amazing finishing time. Running in the wind is horrific
That’s awesome that they changed the race so it wasn’t as boring as it was before. Not awesome that there was insane winds. Nice job finishing with an great time anyway!
I was looking for you. Bummed I never saw you. Glad you finished as well as you did.
nice job girl! there are too many elements that intimidate me when it comes to running, but wind is definitely one of them! way to push through.
Congrats on meeting your goal! What a great accomplishment. I can totally see the struggle in your face in your that race picture – but you did it!
I ran Vegas & man oh man that wind was HORRIBLE! I was VERY worried about this race because of a bad IT Band injury but I ran it! No PR (actually 5min slower) but at least I didn’t further the injury, I could walk afterward & I literally smiled the entire race! (as evidenced by my race photos) BTW, saw you when you ran by the Luxor & yelled out Skinny Runner Woot Woot! You gave me a fist pump in the air, Jersey style. Then my beau said you finished steps ahead of him (he was doing half). I had him on SR-spotting-duty
congrats kaye on having a FUN race!!
Congrats on a great race! And Pro now has a holiday sock…which I bought. I am going to have to dedicate one drawer to just Pro socks pretty soon, thanks to you and your always saying good stuff about them
i love the holiday sock! im wearing it this weekend in a holiday race. and i have a drawer all for pro socks. its a sickness.
Wow!! You are truly amazing! Every time I read one of your recaps I think you are a running machine. I just saw your comment above about running a race this coming weekend – what distance is it?
I loved your Elvis costume!! I’m glad the cape didn’t strangle you with all that nasty wind!
monica from runeatrepeat.com and i are running a local half marathon this sunday and we’re dressing up! or at least i am.
Great race! Too bad about the wind, but clearly you powered through it, good for you!
You are seriously my running idol. Not only do you eat marathons for breakfast, but you dress up for a lot of them in costume and that doesn’t affect your performance and you are so positive! You are awesome
You totally look like Elvis! Shame on whoever didn’t recognize your outfit! Come one people – it is Vegas – who else would you have been?!
Whoa! Those are some crazy winds!!!
Yeah, I ran CIM (in the wind and heavy rain… for the first couple of hours). The rain might have been okay, except for the huge blister I got on the sole of my foot. The headwind on the other hand? TOUGH. But I still just decided to have fun with it. No goal, enjoyed the crowds, and finished
Congratulations on a great time despite the crazy winds AND doing so in costume – LOVE it!
I think your costume is pretty great!
Good job for pushing through all the wind!
Great job! The wind sounds like a nightmare! You inspire me, so very much!
love your crafty costume!!
very cute!
CONGRATS on a windy 26.2 chica!! you’ve pretty much braved all the elements…rain, wind, heat, hills…all w/fast finish times!!
Happy to hear that R&R made improvements. I’ll have to add it back to my calendar next year!
Saw you at the Expo on Sat. Thanks so much for your great advice and encouragement on running my first Half. Woo hoo. I finsished just a few minutes under my goal time and ran the entire race with my husband. That was sweet. We had some wind at the beginning and then were blasted with some cross winds, but it calmed down later. Nothing like you endured. Congrats on your finish. Looking forward to reading about your future marathon adventures in 2013!
I just saw that Nikki Reed ran the same race except I think she ran the half!! That would have been a fun celebrity to see!
yeah i wish i had seen her! or stalked her.
Congrats on finishing another! I’m hoping to have that pace by the time I reach the Seattle Marathon in June! I’m workin’, I’m workin’! Thanks for the inspiration!
So glad to hear they fixed the course and resolved the issues from last year. That was the final nail in the coffin for me ever doing a RNR again one to many bad races with them.
I have decided to run the Destination wine country races as my race of choice
Congrat’s to all who ran and finished

I race the full on Sunday and it was my first marathon ever! I have to say thank you SR cause you definitely inspired me to do it! I think it’s amazing that you do these so often! I am already planning to run another in February, possibly Huntington Beach. I tried to find you at the ProCompression booth but you had already left for the day..bummer! You really are an amazing athlete and so strong mentally and physically. Most importantly, thanks for having the same celeb stalking addiction that I do! Off to buy some more pro socks!
congrats on your first marathon lauren! that is awesome!
I like your costume! Congrats on making your goal time even with that wind.
Awesome job on the marathon Sunday. I ran it as my first full, and I agree with you that the wind was seriously tough! I also think next marathon (yep, I want to do another!) I need one that starts at the regular morning race start time. That tricked me too. You rock! And love your Elvis costume.

Yep, ran the Vegas half, and at one point, I was looking around and people almost looked horizontal from trying to lean forward against the wind. Miserable. And, as I mentioned in a previous comment, totally missed seeing you at the Paris restaurant…but forgot to mention in that one…I wanted to call out your husband’s name but realized I don’t really know his real name b/c you call him a million different nicknames on your blog…all I could think of was Jaybob and I thought, “Man, if that’s not his name, I’m gonna look totally ridiculous.”
Congrats on your 15th for the year.
Wind sucks! I’d rather run in snow or rain than wind. Congrats on #39! And I can totally see the Elvis in you!
Great pace, you and the other Elvis kept me on a 3:30 pace, 3:30:21 to be exact. Then the other Elvis fell off and you lost me at mile 20 or so. Good for you, you were so strong and steady even with the conditions.
Congrats on another great race!! I read your blog every day and I guess it’s a good testament to your writing skills that as I was talking about the Vegas race with my husband, I was quoted saying, ‘One of my FRIENDS ran the Vegas marathon and she was saying how windy it was too…..’ When I finished I had to take a second to remind myself that I have in fact never met you, so calling your my ‘friend’ was maybe a little bit of a stretch…. good thing he never listens to me or he would have been confused what mystery ‘friend’ I was talking about.
I’ll be back tomorrow, buddy!
hahahahha
thanks for reading!
I think you look more like Sheera The Princess of Power LOL
I will truly feel old if no one knows who she is!
I watched some of the race outside of our hotel (Aria) and then wimped out because of the winds, so I went inside and watched from our suite.
The winds were STILL hellacious and shaking the windows on the 52nd floor, so I could imagine how it felt to run against it.
