Gotta cut loose, Footloose.

by SkinnyRunner on November 17, 2012

WORKOUT -

Ran outside -

13.1 miles/1:43

hills and humidity

Man, this run was tough – the hills spanked me like a willfully disobedient child.

I took so many rest breaks and even sat down on a curb at one point to take my shoes off (to get the dirt and rocks out. and to pout.)

But I tried to finish strong with a couple flat, fast miles; it’s never to late to put in a little extra effort and salvage a crappy run.

I tried to do a MsFitRunner pose, but I think it needs some work.  Girl just ran a 2:57 marathon(!) and poses like a superstar.

By the way, Monica, I love you.  that’s all.

Did you see Lauren Scruggs on Dateline last night?  We TIVO’ed it because we were super busy watching the Footloose remake with Julianne Hough.

Fakt: I do not know how to line dance.  or dance in general.  But I sorta want to learn now.

Wait… You took a break while running? That makes me feel so much better. Whenever I get tired and feel like walking a bit, I feel shame and think, Skinny Runner wouldn’t walk….

Seriously. This makes me feel less ashamed of my feeble attempts at distance running.

You crack me up. Thanks for noticing my stellar posing. I’ve been practicing in my spare time.
And I’m going to say at the expense of being hated – I was slightly jealous that you had a warm and humid run. just the tiniest bit :-/ it’s chilly here!!

Oh, honey. Come to Texas. Any one if us can teach you to line dance. Its required of us Texans that we learn in the womb…just before we get fitted for our first pair of boots ;)

Love that you took a little break – I always wonder if I have to rehack the time if I stop – good to know that others do the same on occasion!!!
BTW – I love the remake of Footloose – and I have <0 rhythm in my body!!! I also like to sing the songs loudly (and off-key cause that's how I sing)!!!

wait, you ran a half marathon basically. and did it in 1:43 while taking rest breaks!!??? dang!!! You really are super woman!! my rest breaks consist of me lying on the side of the road in the fetal position crying. then realizing i still have to get home somehow so 3 HOURS later my butt walks its way back. :-) i have no idea what i just wrote. Hope you had an awesome weekend!

Well, you did just finish an Ultra Relay. And some runs just go that way. In AZ today, it was headwind.

I think Julianne Hough is beyond gorgeous, how was the movie!?

I know how to do The Hustle. But that is because I am old…and because I am all about hustling. Does that count as a line dance? Probably not :(

I also got the golden Wave Riders to follow the ruby slipper ones. I also get tons of mud n’ shit crusted into that hole part…bums me out.

I thought the remake was kinda cheesy but they did a good job on it!

You’re super woman. U ran that time with a rest? Wow, girl. You are impressive!

Erin November 17, 2012 at 8:03 pm

I loved Footloose, as cheesy as it was. I must admit that I never saw the original all the way through. I am now thinking that maybe I need to start taking breaks during my runs and maybe I will run faster like you!!! :)

Sue November 17, 2012 at 8:15 pm

Line dance? You should come by my neighbourhood park in the morning – all the ladies (mainly retirees) do it…every morning. And they’re good!

Missy November 18, 2012 at 7:05 am

I love that remake of Footloose, such a great dance movie!

Sarah November 18, 2012 at 8:21 am

Youre so speedy if you ran that fast with a break. Has anyone else complained about the target ad popup on cell phones? It is really annoying to have to get out of it for every article.

I apologize for that!

Zumba is just line dancing. You can do that and also say you got a workout in. :)

We learned how to line dance in 6th grade gym class… we also learned many other dances of which i had to take part in the guy part because we didn’t have enough guys in our class AND… I was the tallest person in our class…

So, right as I clicked on this blog post in my Google reader, a Chase Freedom commercial came on my TV and they were playing “Footloose” in the background. Freaked me the heck out. Thought I’d share that fun little story with ya!

Hello! LOVE your blog! I have a random question not necessarily related to this post, but in general, if you don’t mind. I am a runner who recently has started getting extremely painful shin splints! Do compression socks help with that? I desperately want to continue running, but these shin splints are threatening….I notice you wear compression socks frequently, but have never really known what they are for & I’m curious…Thanks!

Reply

SkinnyRunner November 18, 2012 at 9:41 pm

thanks for reading! if you have shin splints, you need to rest and ice them in order to heal up. also do stretches like tracing the alphabet with your toes to strengthen the shin and calf muscles, but you really have to rest for them to totally heal. i definitely think that compression socks or sleeves do help with shin pain as well.

Alison November 19, 2012 at 7:30 am

Thanks so much. I took about a month off and did a lot of strength training in the meantime. I did a short 3 miler the other day pain free <—-Yay! But will ease back into this slowly. Thanks for the tips! I'll start shopping for some new socks ;) I'll try anything!

sarah November 19, 2012 at 9:37 am

Most people who I know (myself included) found that having shin splints usually meant it was time for orthotics– the custom made ones– made by a chiropactor, podiatrist, etc. They can be expensive, but some places accept insurance, and pain free running is definitely worth the price.

Was the new Footloose good? I’m not sure I could get past the lack of Kevin Bacon. Fun fact: I can do the original footloose dance from the end and did it at my wedding. Now, if we go to other weddings where they play the song, I am forced to “perform.”

SkinnyRunner November 19, 2012 at 8:24 am

It is cute and fun to watch, but im not sure if its “good”. mindless fun, i guess. some of the dialogue is kinda stiff and really predictable.

Funny, I ran 13.1 in 1:43 yesterday too! Randomly signed up for a half a few days before without looking at the elevation chart or weather. Windy and bridges make for a tough race :( Even though it was way off a PR, it was seriously HARD! PS- love the purple nike capris!

I love line dancing!

I just can’t seem to be okay with the remakes of my favorite classics, so I refuse to watch them. I’m old fashioned like that!

I love reading about your runs, the good and bad ones! I can do it right now, so I’m counting on reading all of the details in your blog. And your idea of a bad run is most likely the best one I’ve ever had!
