WORKOUT -
Surfing – that counts as a workout, right?
Errr, I meant surfing the web
Walked dog -
2 miles
I didn’t bring my camera with me while running yesterday so I don’t have many pictures which means this might be short.
I woke up 4am to hit the road for the 90 minute drive to Santa Clarita for the marathon, right by Magic Mountain. The extra hour of sleep in the morning was nice, but it also meant an hour later of warmer weather while running.
{Wore my brand new 26.2 tie dye tank that is on sale for only $15 and free shipping and you get a free tote with purchase. insane.}
Before the race I met reader Jen who was as nice as nice can be and then met up with Eric, Matt and Andrew.
Matt and I planned on running together for awhile since we were both shooting for 3:15ish. It was a little crowded at the start (there weren’t corrals since it’s a smaller race) and we ran the first mile in 8:08, definitely slow for the time we were aiming for.
Then we went 7:28 and 7:17, nice even pacing. ha.
We ran together for the first 12.5 miles which was great for me because the miles flew by, and I passed the halfway point right under 1:40. Matt was feeling good and took off while I struggled a little in miles 14-15 (7:44, 7:43 min/miles).
I think I was bored and readjusting to not having that built-in pacer for the past hour and a half. But I picked it back up at mile 16 with a 7:27 mile. I felt AMAZING during miles 16-18, like I had won the running lottery.
{When I Googled “Happiest, luckiest guy in the world” this pic kept coming up}
The last 6-7 miles were hard: it was warm out, I didn’t have any music, and oh yeah, it was last 6-7 miles of a marathon. Of course it was hard.
I finished in 3:17:41, average pace of 7:33. I came in second female, but it was a smaller race, like I said. There were only 104 women and 379 total marathoners.
Eric’s like, Get away from me and wipe that dumb smile off your face. I get that a lot.
Overall the course was easier and flatter than last week’s marathon where I ran about 35 seconds faster, but I think it was warmer yesterday. It was 83 degrees when I got in my car and 92 in Calabasas.
I felt like I had to work harder yesterday to run a similar time to last week. This is my 3rd marathon in four weeks so I’m sure my body’s tired, but I think a big factor is the weather and the heat. I’m pretty sure I need to run a marathon in an igloo… or here:
Ahh my homeland.
And only $17,000 to go run it.
FUN WAYS TO HELP OUT
The new BIC bands set that is on sale and supports hurricane relief sold out already!
But Sandy is fast and furiously making a few more so you can get them HERE while they’re available, but you get to choose a different sparkle color since fuchsia is sold out. thanks!
But if you haven’t picked up any, my friend Jacqueline has offered to buy a set and give it away to one reader on her blog. $3 from each set are donated to hurricane relief so you could win big and help out. double whammy time. Thank you, Jacqueline!
Also, my friend NYC Catie told me about her friend who designs shirts and is donating 100% of the profits to victims of Hurricane Sandy.

Girl you can fly! Great job taking second place. I just ordered the Mizuno 16′s in hopes they make me faster. A girl can dream, right!?
Thank you for encouraging us to do what we can to help. I really believe every little bit helps!!
AMAZING Race time!
I have been reading you for a while but I really don’t think I’ll EVER get used to seeing you do marathon after marathon on such a freakishly great time! It is absolutely amazing!
Also, you’re from Alaska right?( correct me if I’m wrong!). I was your neighbour, living in The Yukon! Did you ever check out the Yukon Quest, the whole dog sleigh thingy?? haha
i am from alaska, born and raised until i was 14. we were practically neighbors!
Just to let you know… your marathon time is faster than my 10K time.
Yeah. You be super fast, woman!!
well the great part about running is that you only compete with yourself, doesnt matter if your “fast” isn’t someone else’s you know. we all put in the effort and the work, no matter what the pace is
Congrats on a great race. I bought the BIC Bands + another matte black one so I can wear it to work and get away with it without my students saying, “is that a running headband?!” Wish I’d gotten the bright pink, but I’m excited with the orchid purple that I got! Thanks for the offer. I’ve been holding out for it for a couple of weeks. It was worth the wait!
Great race! Just ordered the ProCompression Argyle’s today. LOVE!
nominated you for the inspiring blogger award!!
Congrats again on a fabulous marathon.
I definitely think the heat must have made a difference…80-something when you got in your car? That’s definitely HOT. I think each degree above 60 makes a difference in your pace. Every 15 degrees equals 10 seconds per mile slower? Not sure, I’ll have to look into it more.
You are too funny – “only 104 females”.
2nd is awesome (even if there are only 10!!!!) – especially since you are a marathon running machine!! Way to go!
Literally laughed out loud twice – Eric’s expression and then the picture you googled. HI-larious!
Congratulations on your time and placing, no matter how small you say the marathon was. Second woman is still second woman!
And I’m pretty sure that’s amazing for your third marathon in four weeks!
And how cute is Jacqueline’s dog?! That face makes a great advertisement!
You should be proud of yourself no matter how small the marathon was! Dude, you’ve run 3 marathons in 4 weeks! Cray!
So inspiring to read about you running three marathons in four weekends…and running them so fast, too! Congrats on your 2nd place finish — and love the tie dye top!
Hi! I just wanted to say thanks for introducing me to procompression…i am now obsessed and wear them all the time. I get so many compliments on how bright the colors are! Great job on your marathon…I have been living through runners blogs because I tore my acl this fall and haven’t been able to run and it is killing me.
Sigh, to run in warm weather
jersey is cold and dark and I’m blaming that on my slow pace LOL keep on keeping on with those awesome finish times! Oh and u are ROCKIN that tie dye top! I gotta order one ASAP!
I agree with the only competing with yourself. My 10k time is SLOW for some, but it was a PR by 5:30 for me so I PROUD!
Great job, 2nd Female!
The Kidless Kronicles
Of course it was a cool and comfortable mid-to-upper-70s right up until the marathon/half marathon weekend…ugh. I can’t imagine running the full yesterday, especially for the more novice marathoners who were still making their way in at 11am and later. Is Eric from San Diego? I think I may recognize him from the expo on Saturday… I was talking to a friend at the booth for one of the local running stores and he stopped by asking if the compression socks on the table were the only brand they carried
He didn’t mention he was with PRO though. If he did, I would have piped in that I love their product!
yes he’s from san diego.
congrats on an awesome race time!! BTW, that Ice Marathon does not look fun. Eek!
2nd even in a smaller marathon… nice job!
Antarctic Ice Marathon?? Cray-cray!
You run 26.2 like you’ve them for lunch or dinners! Anyway, congrats again!
You lucky doll.
First, you are a kick-azz runner.
Second, you get to hang out with those hot guys.
You are living my dream life.
hahahahaha. we are all (happily) married and they are far better runners than i am so they kick my rear.
Holy smokes friend, you are darn fast. You inspire me with your marathon every stinking weekend schedule.
I actually would like to copy you. Ha. Congrats on 2nd place!!!!
Love the tank! What size do you have? They only have Medium and Large left but not sure how the sizing is. Thanks!
mine is a small but i could definitely wear a medium.
Great! Just ordered a medium.
dude i’d be proud if i won a marathon with only TWO people in it. but i think what I love most about you is your humility. Rare quality nowadays and its refreshing to see someone with as much talent as you have be so humble at the same time. Your parents raised you well, girl! I know they’re proud!
Congrats on the race! the outfit is FABULOUS as always!
You definitely need to run the Alaskan marathon. Maybe you can find someone to sponsor you
.
Awesome job on the race. I can’t believe how warm it is where you are. It’s 30 here and we had frost on the ground this morning!
you did amazing!! Very impressed – the heat always make me slower unfortunately, and I should be used to it being born in miami!
SR you are a true inspiration to me! I admire your humility as your running ability is incredible!
One question I have is why do you run with the compression socks on? What does it do for you? I HEART my pro compression socks but am afraid to wear them on race day for fear that they may lend to overheating. So just trying to understand the benefits from your perspective. Also, I NEED the pink argyle sock…LOVE THEM!
well thank you.
check out this post about compression: http://skinnyrunner.com/2012/07/25/compression-101/
you certainly dont HAVE to wear them while running (and i dont during really hot weather) because the real benefits are for recovery and post-workout, but i always think, it cant hurt. if the olympians are doing it like shalane flanagan, it definitely cant hurt
Thanks for the deets! I totally agree that the socks help with shin pain/splints! Just bought the pink argle socks with the 40% discount…wahoo!
Cheers!
Congrats on yet another marathon! You are awesome! I bought my tank (I can’t believe it’s only $15!) and as if I don’t have enough bic bands I will be buying more today!
I wore compression socks the other day on a 6 mile run and thought of you! Creepster McGee over here, sorry about that! I wasn’t sure how I was going to like them at first, but I decided after a couple of miles that I did!
I didn’t end up wearing them in my 5K on Saturday morning though because it was only about 40* here in Charlotte so I needed some actual pants. First time running in those too. I definitely prefer shorts, you’re lucky it stays warm there all the time!
You are so freaking fast. I feel pretty cool ‘just knowing’ you.
Awesome job! You definitely made lemonade out of lemons with New York being canceled!
They’ve raised over $500!
And thanks for posting my friend’s company! He’s been getting orders
AMAZING!
Love all these companies coming together to raise money for Sandy victims. Pura Vida also created a bracelet to benefit the victims!! But it already sold out…I guess that’s a good sign though!
Congrats on another marathon! And second place, not too shabby! I can relate to wanting to run in the arctic…the summer here in FL is brutal for running. It’s finally getting bearable (70′s), hope it cools down for you soon too!
Finally bought my first set of Bic Bands and I can’t wait to not have to fix my headband every 5 minutes when running. After your previous suggestion on the Moving Comfort sports bras I will now have both my chest and hair in place. hahaha.
girl, you’re set and not gonna be moving at all.
Seriously, you are amazing! I hope to one day be able to run as fast as you! Right now I am on hiatus until after the first of the year since have a bilateral mastectomy two weeks ago. I haven’t gone for a run in 16 days now, and it’s killing me…I cannot wait to be hitting the pavement again. I’m sure my family feels the same;)
Second place?! That’s awesome! I hope to get those great times one day, but for now, I’ll be happy with anything under four hours. You’re amazing girl!
That race looks awesome – I love winter running! But whoah…that’s some serious $$. I don’t want it that much. LOL
WAY TO GO ON THE MARATHON!!!!
What is your Marathon PR?
thank you.
its 3:14 and change.
