Happy Christmas and blog news!

WORKOUT -

Xtend barre class -

55 mins

Ran on TM -

8.3 miles/1:15

1.0 incline

nice and easy paced

If you’re on twitter, you  might have already seen this, but I went to an Xtend barre class this morning at 6am costumed up for Halloween.

My friend Bri always manages to kick my rear no matter what the class; today we did a move that I literally could not do.  We were in a chair position on our toes, similar to this but with our hands above our heads holding the barre:

daf8e20191befb85_IMG_3936_preview  source

And then, holding that position, we were suppose to flex each leg out straight in front of us.  Couldn’t do it.  My legs were shaking like I’d seen a ghost.  or a cat…

005 (435x800)

{Bri and I, you can tell who’s the teacher by looking at our toes and hands}

004 (800x437)

The class was a good burn and every time I take an exercise class I tell myself I need to branch out and do more than just run.  So what’d I do?

Headed to the gym to run.

I stopped at Starbucks on the way and celebrated Christmas:

008 (444x800)

{Did the holiday cups come out today or have they been out already?}

At the gym I did 8 very easy paced miles while watching the storm coverage.  I’m still not 100% sure I’ll make it to NYC this weekend, sorta watching the news, airports and seeing what other runners are doing.

BLOG NEWS!  I’M SORTA DUMB!

And for the “Wow, I’m surprisingly technologically un-advanced for a blogger” memo of the day, the blog now has a Facebook page thanks to my IT guy.  I tried to do it on my own and got it all screwed up.

But if you would follow/like/friend/whatever the protocol is for the SR page, please do, thanks!  And if not, no biggie…

just be prepared for me to smash all your pumpkins tonight…

and possibly egg your house.

And if anyone could give me some Facebook tips, I’d appreciate it.  Like how to use FB and a blog together.  I know nothing about Facebook and it scares me.

I wish Xtend Barre classes would come to WI. I miss ballet so much!

I “liked” you on FB – WELCOME!!! Def a way to get more readers to your blog, advertise any contests or giveaways, direct people to older blog posts of significance, share running news or tips or really anything else that you think readers of your blog would enjoy but maybe don’t deem an entire blog :) (I run FB pages as part of my job and that’s how we explain it to clients.)

so do i just push “like” on other blogs/sites, etc?

Blaire @ Just Been Running October 31, 2012 at 11:42 am

Everytime you do a new post, copy and paste it to your FB page and when people “like” your page it will show up on their mini feed every time!

Reply

SkinnyRunner October 31, 2012 at 12:00 pm

like the whole post or just the URL?

Reply

Blaire @ Just Been Running October 31, 2012 at 12:15 pm

The URL!

Every time I do a new post I put the URL as my status.

Leonor @FoodFaithFitness October 31, 2012 at 11:36 am

I am getting away with not dressing up this year! Usually my kids bug me incessantly to dress up. They somehow forgot this year?? I did my friend’s make-up last wknd when she dressed as a French Maid. It was fun because I could pile it on, after all, it’s Halloween!

Blaire @ Just Been Running October 31, 2012 at 11:41 am

Yay, I “liked” your page!

Haha I love that you dressed up for Barre class, that is awesome! Button looks soooo cute! We aren’t really dressing up as anything tonight except I got my husband some fake chest hair and a mustache…umm scary. I got a little alien bobble headband thing and some wacky glasses, I can’t wait to give out candy!

Abby @ Change of Pace October 31, 2012 at 11:48 am

Cute costume! I love how you always know a dancer by the way the hold themselves or even stand.
I vote you start biking and swimming and then go for triathlon!

Kristen @ The Balanced Bowl October 31, 2012 at 11:53 am

Honestly….the Christmas cup is scarier right now than any costume I will see tonight. What the heck?!?!? Already?

Kari @ Running Ricig October 31, 2012 at 11:58 am

I liked your page! I don’t really have any good tips, though.

You’re way better at dressing up for Halloween than I am. I am currently dressed as a college student…you know, full sweats during the day.

I liked your FB page! My only word of advice is to avoid posting the same thing on FB, twitter and your blog. This probably sounds obvious, but I follow a few blogs that do this and it gets tiring. Enjoy crackbook! oh, and Starbucks…it’s too early for Christmas!

I just got a facebook page too, since I’ve dreaded doing it. I’m still not sure if I’m a fan! I was beginning to think I was the only one who got a holiday cup so far! I got one on Sunday, it was bizarre! But, I love it.

Mayor Bloomberg just announced that the marathon will for sure be happening!

And I love barre class too! I take Pure Barre. It’s super hard but I love it!

I’m going to go “like” your facebook page :)

Yay for the facebook page! You can automatically have your new blog posts post on your facebook page; however, I’ve tried it in the past and sometimes it works and other times it doesn’t. Every time you have a new blog post up, just go to your facebook page and post the URL link and then it will automatically show up in people’s facebook timelines. BUT, facebook now charges for all your ‘fans’ to see the content you post on fb–I think they said only like 10% of your fans will see what you post to fb each time you post something. So, you may want to tell people to ‘Like’ your page and then under the ‘Message’ tab to click ‘Add to Interests List’ that way they will see everything you post. Make sense?

And this may totally confuse you, but if you want more than just the title of your post to appear in facebook when you paste the URL (like you want it to pull an image from that post as well), install this on your blog: http://bloggingwithamy.com/facebook-thumbnails/

Glad to see I’m not the only one who was taken aback by the Christmas starbucks cup! I mean… seriously? I love Christmas but it’s just a little too early for me right now!

Bri @ ShapedforFitness October 31, 2012 at 12:38 pm

I have to say, we are so cute! :-) Your costume was awesome this morning. Haha, scared you so bad to make your legs shake?? Love it! Is it weird that I like hearing my students groan/cry and grit their teeth in barre class?

Yes, the under the barre abs are crazy hard (one of my favorites), especially when your legs are shot from all the barre work. Here’s a photo: http://www.dailycandy.com/boston/article/106089/The-Bar-Method-Pure-Barre

What airport are you flying into? I’m supposed to fly into La Guardia on Friday, but the airport is still closed, so not sure it’s going to happen. Such a bummer, I’ve been looking forward to running NYC for a year! Oh well, my hardship is nothing compared to what everyone else is going through on the East Coast.

we’re flying into jfk and its suppose to open today… and youre absolutely right, whether i run or not pales in comparison to what some people are going through.

Welcome to FB! I use FB like most people use Twitter. Random quick thoughts, questions, shout outs, news etc. And a way to follow companies and organizations I’m interested in. Find a lot of great discounts and free suff this way! I post the URL from my blog posts as my FB status, but I try to make sure my FB page isn’t a copy of the blog.

Amanda @ Romancing the Unusual October 31, 2012 at 12:59 pm

I wish they had barre classes here! Maybe it’d help make me more graceful. Yea, probably not. Have fun figuring out facebook :) I liked you!

Anyway, you look so good in your costume! I don’t think my body could manage itself and do that move either!

I am suddenly hit by the desire to take a barre class. I somehow feel this will fulfill my childhood dream of being a ballerina!

Reply

Angela @ Happy Fit Mama October 31, 2012 at 1:20 pm

Love Barre classes! They remind me that my quads run too much.

There’s a plug in for your blog that will automatically link up to FB when you post. Saves the hassle of copy and pasting. I also will put random articles or posts from other bloggers on my page that others may find interesting. Also, ask questions to get interaction. I’m still learning too….

Heather October 31, 2012 at 1:29 pm

Pretty sure all other runners don’t run as much as you do, cant get into any race they want to so they are trying as hard as they can to make it to NY to run the race that they have been training for a long time for…..a once in a lifetime race for most people.. hope you can make it.

I liked you on facebook. I haven’t taken my level of facebook because most people in my real life don’t know I have a blog!!

When I did the lululemon modeling gig and they posted about my blog on facebook, a few of my real life friends found out about my blog and were surprised (in a good way of course.) I felt kinda weird, like I’d been hiding something for so long (for no reason) but then I realized that I don’t really care if people know about it or not.

I hope you get to run this weekend in NYC. I live across the way from Staten Island (in jersey) where the marathon starts. It looks insane right now from the storm damage and people without power and even some without their homes. Did listen to the Mayor earlier who said the marathon is on for this weekend no matter what and they are doing everything in their power to clean up as much as possible. I know only JFK and newark airports are open right now with limited service but I’m sure more will open up soon.
PS Lurve your costume! Halloween is cancelled for us this week.

I think that the cups usually come out on Nov. 1st. Best day of the year – jealous you got it a day early. I’m stuck in the Dulles airport waiting now that my plane has been delayed a 2nd time. No Christmas cups here to lighten the mood.

Kristen @ notsodomesticated October 31, 2012 at 4:09 pm

I’m loving Button’s costume. My nieces always look adorable in their costumes, regardless of what they wear. But the best part is, this year they told my husband that they wanted him to dress up as Justin Bieber! Which is hilarious for about a million reasons, starting with the fact that my husband’s “hair” looks more like Mr. Clean than Mr. Bieber! ;)

I took a class yesterday, too! It was freaking hard (it didn’t help that it was 55 minutes instead of 45). And today? Holy soreness batman! My body is in so much pain, but it’s im a good, I-just-challenged-myself sorta way, so that’s a plus!

Two fb rules to remember;

1. Leave Negative Nancy and Debbie Downer far and AWAY from fb. There is nothing worse than listening to people complain. :)
2. No hashtags. Hashtags are for twitter, no matter what you may see on fb. #peopleareweird.
Oh, and as always- sarcasm rules.

Facebook has recently changed the ‘rules’ when it comes to fan pages and visibility (like someone mentioned above). There’s an article about it here: http://dangerousminds.net/comments/facebook_i_want_my_friends_back

I still think it’s worthwhile for you to have a FB presence, but don’t be surprised if you’re getting heaps of likes but it’s not increasing your blog page views.

The things that I like to see on a FB page are links to the blog post, photos, shared articles that you find interesting etc. I think that if it’s for a business I’d save the personal status type updates for twitter.

That barre move reminds me a bit of awkward pose at Bikram – my legs shake uncontrollably as well!

Cait the Arty Runnerchick October 31, 2012 at 7:59 pm

YAY for u finally getting on FB! it’s easier i think because u don’t have to learn some lingo stuff and the # bit. but yea, FB keeps changing things around and that can get frustrating.

another thing i’ve noticed, and maybe it’s just me, but FB doesn’t send me alerts when my Page gets mentioned by someone else. i get alerts when my personal account gets tagged, but i never know when my blog/site one is; which is annoying because then people think i’m just ignoring them!

Reply

Julia P. Valentine October 31, 2012 at 8:20 pm

Look at you, like a big girl! Ok, so here’s the FB deal, you already use twitter, so just have your IT dude link the two. Then every time you post on twitter, it automatically posts to FB! Voila. Now, shall we solve world peace an destructive weather patterns caused by global warming? Great.
Don’t worry about hashtags on FB. Anyone who links from twitter or instagram have them but people who don’t know will just ignore them. I post my igrams to FB (bc, dude, I don’t post much on FB anymore bc my mom is a facebook fiend, NO privacy! she even administers a page for a group she volunteers for … so she can give you tips too … ;) )
The person who said to post articles or things you want to share but don’t warrant a whole post are perfect for FB.
I like it for pictures of people’s vacas and kids (that way I can skip hanging with them until I confirm the kids are at least obnoxious teenagers and hate their parents and will therefore love and obey me).

Having taken ballet my whole life and now being a runner, I’ve always wondered how a barre class is similar or different to a ballet class. Have you ever taken a ballet class?
