Paso Robles Marathon Race Recap

by SkinnyRunner on October 29, 2012

First, congrats to reader Joelle who just ran her first marathon, Marine Corps yesterday!

I love hearing first-time race stories; they’re always exciting and inspiring.

Yesterday…

I didn’t bring my camera during the race so I don’t have any pictures of the vineyards, but check out last year’s race recap for some.  It ended up being great weather and a beautiful day.

We started right at 7:30am at Le Vigne Winery and since it’s a smaller race (about 300 people) I started near the front.  I ran a 7:30 first mile and tried to get into a good pace without starting too fast.

The first 6-7 miles were all around 7:30-7:50 min/miles, but they felt a lot harder.  I think because I wasn’t warmed up and it was chilly out that maybe it took awhile longer for me to get into it?!  I don’t know, running confuses me.

But by mile 7ish I started feeling good and just sorta zoned out.

This is a scenic course through the wine roads and vineyards of Paso Robles and with all the fall colors, it really was beautiful.  I didn’t bring music (my ipod kicked the bucket for good and went in the trash) and enjoyed the surroundings.  It was quiet and cool out, just a great morning to run.

I hit the halfway point at 1:41:21 and kept trucking.  Things felt easy until about mile 15 – that’s when I first felt like this whole marathon running thing was harder than I had previously thought in my vineyards-viewing bliss.

The course is all rolling hills since it’s through wine country and all…  There’s 2 tougher hills but they weren’t that bad.  I think the elevation chart makes them look worse than they are:

I sorta got into the groove and started pushing it around mile 20.  I can’t remember any splits and am too lazy to find my Garmin, but I ran the second half in 1:35:44.

At mile 24.5 I ended up taking the lead and finished in 3:17:05.

{I tried to go with Halloween colors for the race}

Afterwards my friend and I hung out in food tent area; it was great to be out of the sun, have seating and good food!

005

There was donuts, fruit, bagels and cream cheese, and breakfast burritos that were delish, all donated by local companies.

A HUGE thanks to my friend for driving me to the start, picking me up and being my cheerleader and all around good great friend!

008

For winning I received a magnum of wine and some gift cards (my man will LOVE them) and another medal.

I won’t do a full race review since I did one last year (here), but this is another great, small town race put on friendly volunteers with all proceeds going to the local Rotary Club which among other things, provides scholarships and grants to local students.

Everyone I met, from the aid station volunteers to Biker Bob to the volunteers serving food to the race director, was so nice and friendly that it was great to be a part of that small-town atmosphere.

Wow! Congrats on taking the lead and on the super fast finish!!!
It is nice to do a smaller race once in a while. The locals (though they might be far and few) are always great supporters!

Ha I totally called it when I saw your photo with the RD in the earlier post. Congratulations that is amazing! What does it feel like to win a race like that? You should be super proud and kinda make a bigger deal of it! ; )

And since you don’t like wine all that much I would be happy to take that magnum off your hands – I am helpful.

You won the marathon! Congrats! I love that you’re such an amazing athlete while still taking time to mention the volunteers. Exactly why I keep reading your blog.

Reply

Melissa October 29, 2012 at 4:35 pm

Ok, how do you run a 7:30 mile and call it not that fast? My fastest mile time, during a 1 mile run, is 7:48 and I have to book it (I am only 5 feet tall however). But seriously, how do you do it??

Reply

Laura October 29, 2012 at 4:36 pm

Congrats on the win!!

Reply

Monica C. October 29, 2012 at 4:42 pm

Wow, you won the entire race? How cool is that?!! I participated in a small race a couple of weeks ago and the RD was giving a verbal overview of the course. “Make a right here, loop around there …”. I totally zoned out because I knew there was no way I would be at the front; I’d always be following people!!

Big congrats!!!

Brittany @berries & barbells October 29, 2012 at 4:57 pm

Umm…you won?!?! That is amazing. Congrats girl.

Nicole@TheKidlessKronicles October 29, 2012 at 5:10 pm

You say things like “and then I took the lead” so casually that I have to ask, how high is your internal competitive drive? I mean, we all know how fast you are. But I don’t get an overly competitive vibe from your posts. You have to have it in there somewhere to be able to push yourself to such amazing results. It would by NO means be a bad thing. Just curious.

Congratulations on the race! And for winning! So amazing. I think it would be pretty fun to do a small race like this just for the great volunteer support, like you said. And HOORAY for great friends who support you! :)

So what’s it like to break the tape? Or string? Or did they not have something similar at a smaller race? I know marathons are your thing but I’d be sad to not have my husband at he finish line, then again I’ve only run 1 marathon!!

Reply

Nora October 30, 2012 at 6:19 am

What? Some races give wine as a prize? How did I not know this? Time to shave a few minutes off my 11 min pace. I have new motivation for speed. Although – maybe if I quit drinking wine I’d shave a minute or two. hmmm. Probably not worth it for me.

Congrats on the WIN!

Great time! You are very humble about how fast you are….my daughter was a volunteer handing out water at an aid station. She said she was around the end…maybe mile 23?? If there were some really obnoxious, but very enthusiastic 10-13 year old girls, cheerleaders wearing matching shirts…that would have been her :) Since you were one of the first I am sure they were really cheering you on!!! Congrats on your win!

Reply

Hi Skinny Runner!
I have been reading your blog for the last couple months and I’m totally hooked. I started running in 2009 while living in Seattle and fell in love. Now living in NC it’s much hard to stay motivated since I live in a non-runner friendly community but I’m still at it and have achieved a new half marathon PR this past spring! Congrats on the victory! I love your skirt!

Hey Skinny Runner! I am the girl you passed at mile 24.5!! You had a great race with negative splits! (Something I need to work on:) Although I didn’t end up winning, I set a new PR by over eleven minutes. Wish I didn’t feel so dead at the end, but now I know what to work on. Good luck with your future races…glad I found your blog.

I don’t drink red either. Sweet white is my favorite. If you haven’t tried it already, you should try a Moscato.

I was in Northern California this weekend running the Healdsburg Half, runs by some beautiful vineyards!

You won! Awesome! Congrats on a great race. That’s a first right? Or did you also win that really small race where it was raining and you ended up getting lost because of poor course markings?

That looks like a really pretty race. Also, I hope that person you passed at 24.5 was a dude. :-)
