After the expo and Ladies Night Out, I didn’t go bed ‘til late, at least for this baby grandma.
So when my alarm went off at 5:45am I wanted to club a seal.
Instead I pretended I was out clubbing with Seal (don’t be jeal, Heidi) and got ready for the 6:30am shuttle to take us to the start of the race.
At the start I ran into this fox whom I’m pretty sure spent the night dreaming of Seal.
Sierra, by the way, PR’ed on this super hilly course which is almost as ridiculously crazy as my pre-race choice of outfits. What, it was cold!
I also met the sweet Kim:
The race started right at 7:30 and since it was smaller (around 400 runners) I lined up near the front.
Met reader Margaret who was so excited and sweet while I was just plain freezing my schnootzle off.
And we’re off!
{Brae, the founder of ZOOMA, has a big heart for empowering women and when you meet her, you can see how much she loves doing this}
I knew the course was going to be hilly and scenic and heck yeah, it was.
The first couple miles felt difficult and slow, but I got into the groove around mile 4 and found a comfortably hard pace.
I didn’t look at my Garmin much during the race because I knew it’d be all wacko jacko pace with the uneven terrain; I tried to push it but be conservative enough for the hills.
Love all the fall colors and leaves; we don’t get that in CaliforniaTown.
The course was a lot of rolling hills in the beginning. I passed a few people and kept trucking along. I grabbed a gel at mile 9 and would drink a water or Cytomax at every aid station.
The volunteers were great – standing out in the windy cold and still cheering us on. I love that with small town races, everyone is so friendly.
Mile 10 was downhill and I ran a 7:01. I think I was excited because we ran right by the finish but then hooked a right towards Mount Kilimanjaro. We hit the steepest, biggest hill at mile 11, I think it was like 9,000 feet elevation gain. I considered walking but had just passed a dude and didn’t want him to pass me so I hobbled up it ever so slowly.
I eventually made it to the top, hit the turnaround and cruised back down to the finish.
Not me:

{Thanks Tricia for the pictures!}
I ended up coming in second in 1:36:19. The winner had 5 minutes on me but was so sweet and encouraging to me and all the runners. We talked for a couple minutes and she is running NYCM too.
{I must think we’re best buds now since I’m all over her}
I met a reader at the finish and I’m sorry, I totally forgot your name. I’m such a loser. Was it Bonnie? BOBBI!
Then it was on to the finish party with massages, food (boxed lunches from the resort for all the runners!), wine, outdoor fireplaces with lounge areas and live music. And Sara Hall, of course.
I really enjoyed the vibe of this race – everyone was so friendly. It was great to meet so many readers, but I also met a few older ladies who didn’t even know what blogging was and they were just as friendly.
{Sparkling wine, my favorite recovery drink of all}
By then it had warmed up a little and wasn’t too cold for this SoCal wiene. The lake view wasn’t too shabby either…
The ZOOMA ambassadors – check out their bios and blogs here.
I’ll have a race review up in a couple days, but I had a really good time and think it would be a fun race to do with girlfriends. It’s a non-threatening, inviting race atmosphere great for runners of any level. Just prepare for some hills!
My splits from my garmin if you’re into that sorta thing.
1. 7:40 2. 7:07 3. 7:41 4. 7:13
5. 7:25 6. 7:32 7. 7:34 8. 7:14 9. 7:07
10. 7:01 11. 7:20 12. 7:41 13. 6:53

Awesome race SR!
Wow. Awesome race! Great job. Hope you enjoyed the wine and fireplaces.

Second place? You’re SO cray. I’m confused though….you wrote about passing a guy but I thought Zooma was just for women….unless you just said “guy” in general and it was actually a girl…?
guys are allowed to race and there were a few but not many. its a women-focused event but hey, great odds for the dudes.
I wish there were more photos of me in this post…gosh.
I liked the small rolling hills throughout the race, but Mt. Kili was insane. I refused to walk because there was no way I would ever start running again. Next time you should be in it to win it.
i say that with every post i write… “i wish there were more photos of me…”
Looks like a great race and beautiful course!
Congrats on the second place finish!
Spot on about all-ladies event: non threatening and fun! Which is why I’ve loved and continue to run the Shape Run and Great Eastern Women’s Run for the past few years.
Grats on the podium finish SR!
SR – saw you on the course and after the race, so I just said ‘hi Skinnyrunner!’ I might have been a little star struck.
Congrats on 2nd! I actually chatted with Stacey, the winner, on the bus over — when I saw her change from training shoes to racing flats and saw that she was the only one doing strides before the race, I knew she was serious! She was incredibly nice.
The race was a great event! thanks for coming out to the midwest!
Looks cold but fun and I’d die for some pretty fall leaves to look at. I’m diggin’ your wine colored top.
Wow, awesome job, girl! Congrats on another great race!!
Great job! Do tell us where you got the awesome jacket, I love it!
I run 5ks here in Michigan, and everyone is so friendly and encouraging. It’s part of what keeps me signing up for more races!
I’m doing the Zooma 1/2 marathon in Amelia Island in January – I can’t wait to read your review. That is so cool that you came in 2nd out of 400 people!
Your wine colored race shirt is so pretty – by who(m)? Looking for a feminine and comfortable race shirt and really haven’t found one yet….
its from trek – http://bontrager.com/model/09570
Great race! I really hope ZOOMA comes out to MN (during a warmer month though because I’m a total baby running in anything colder than 60 degrees) because the races look like so muh fun!
This race sounds awesome! Might have to do it next year. It’s not THAT far form Iowa and I bet I could drag some girl friends along with me:) Nice job on the time too!
Congrats on 2nd!! Wine at the finish line? Sign me up.
Congrats!
That is an awesome time! That looks a beautiful (and hilly) race course. Not sure how far it is from Chicago, but I will have to check it out!
It was great meeting you at this race! It was a beautiful course, but those hills at the end were killer.
You are an a$@hole
thanks.
Huh? What could Laura possibly find that was a-holey about this post? I hope this is some odd inside joke and Laura’s really a close but quirky friend. But I think she’s actually just a grump.
yeah, i dont know her so im not sure what its about? how do you respond when someone calls you that??
girl, you responded perfectly. haha! and if you are the definition of an a-hole than I wanna be an a-hole all day long! You rock my world with your race recaps. this time is incredible. I have my first half marathon this weekend and it’s because of you I signed up for it!! so thanks for all you do to inspire so many. and congrats on another awesome race.
Hmm. Maybe a half-marathon personally insulted her once.
Congrats on finishing second!
I came in second today, too…not my favorite place but I like it a heck of a lot better than fourth, right?! Congrats to you. At first when I read about the Zooma races I just thought, eh, another person building a business on the running boom, good for them. But reading the recap makes me think this is a really quality race, even though I can’t say I’m really into women-only events. I AM into box lunches, Sarah Hall, wine, and beautiful views, though!
congrats to you too!!
Congrats on a great race! That time is fantastic, especially with all of those nasty hills!
Thanks for posting the pic and link to my blog! I was pretty starstruck.
So true about Mt. K @ mile 11 — that was deadly. Pretty sure my nose was scraping the ground the entire way up.
Looks like a blast!!! Great job
I just did the 2nd Annual Cupcake Classic over at Run with Jess. I love you both! Inspiration for this old lady beginning runner.
Awesome recap! You kicked ass. I also ran Zooma Great Lakes yesterday…my first half marathon! This is so stalkerish but I saw you at the start area and totally chickened out like a loser and didn’t say hi
Thanks for the inspiration and for braving the chilly temps and hilly terrain!
hot dang, you shoulda said hi! but congrats on your first half, thats awesome!!
I know – big lame-o moment. But thank you! It’s something I NEVER thought I’d do. I plan to keep running and racing so if our paths cross again I’ll find ya!
Great race! Looks like a fun thing to be a part of.
yay, yay!! CONGRATS on 2nd OF!!!
sounds like such an incredible time.
Awesome job! Congrats on coming in 2nd. Very impressive!
Sweet! Congrats on 2nd place! These Zooma races sound so awesome. Any idea if they are planning on expanding them further West?
i dont know, im trying to convince them to!
Great job! I wish I could have been there. I am happy to see you met Kim and Bobbi.
Congrats on second, Ms. Speedy! I always thought ZOOMA races seemed a little too ‘fad-ish’ but this looks like a great event. I am looking forward to reading your full review.
What a time! Congrats!!
And how fantastic you got to meet soo many people!
Great job on the finish! You are a crazy machine this fall. Have fun with the rest of your races.
That’s a really nice little race! Wowz. You fast, woman (even if all the splits were in different places at times haha).
Wow, that is an amazing time for such a hilly course!! I would love to be able to run that fast, well done!!!
That’s awesome that you placed! Congratulations!! Looks like a fun weekend!
Congrats on 2nd!! Thats an amazing time, especially with such a hilly course. This race series looks awesome.
I love the fall leaves on this course! I would jump around skipping with joy for a little cooler weather and some fall leaves. We don’t have much of that here either on the coast of NC. Congrats on a great race!
It was so fun meeting you! Thanks for taking the time to chat with us, and congrats on second!
Are you ever…just…tired? lol cause I’m tired for you after all these races!! Im doing a 5k in Nov. Thats right! A 5k! Im pathetic LOL You’re awesome!! Congrats!!
Yet another great run!
Congratulations! You are a racing machine (and I mean that in a nice way)!!! I love hearing about the courses from someone who has raced them. Hopefully soon I will be able to race again and maybe we will be in the same race sometime!
Can’t wait to hear about your next exciting adventure!!
Congrats on the great finish! I did the 5K, which was basically just Mt. Kilimanjaro, and was ridiculous. My Midwestern legs don’t know how to handle hills like that.
yeah that hill was crazy and im sure made for a tough 5k since you start out and basically go UP UP UP.
Congrats on 2nd place! Great time for a hilly course. Looked like a ton of fun too.
Ha! Bonnie or Bobbi, I answer to it all:) my wedding video even said Bonnie
sorry about that, ill change it right now!
No worries!! It was nice to meet you
Wow, speedy SR delivers again!!! How were the hills compared to Nike? I looked at your splits and I can’t really tell where the hills were, you must be a good hill runner!
At nike, I’m so embarrassed, the uphill splits we 10:00-10:50, and my downhills were in the 7s…. Is this kinda extreme??? I only ran the half, but it nearly killed me!!
Congrats speedy Sr!!! I cannot even tell which were the hills from your splits!!! How were the hills compare to nike?
I’m such a horrible hill runner. My uphill at nike were at the high 10s and downhill at the 7s. Flats Hoover around 8:30, does this mean I suck at hills? This is kind of extreme isn’t it!????
Great time! You look like you’re freezing in the pics!
Congrats on your 2nd place finish! I didn’t get a chance to formally meet you, since I was the socially awkward ambassador, but my head is in one of your pictures, so I feel like we did meet. Anyway, it was awesome to have you there! Congrats!
Congrats on 2nd! It was a tough course. I did the 5k. I really love how you called the hill Mt Kilomanjaro. That is definitely what it felt like. Definitely the toughest 5k course I’ve ever done and I definitely would’ve hated doing that at the end of a half. Congrats again!
It was great to meet you! That course was tough – I can’t believe you ran it that fast!
Congrats! What type of Garmin do you use?
Congrats! What type of Garmin do you use?
