The Chicago Marathon takes place the first week of October and costs around $150 to enter.
It’s a first come, first serve registration and the race sells out within hours so sign up as soon as registration opens! (I’m not sure when it does for 2013)
It’s a large race with over 45,000 runners in 2012; it’s also flat, fast and great for a potential PR.
THE EXPO
The expo is held at the McCormick Place Convention Center which is HUGE. There were free shuttles offered from the Nike store on the Magnificent Mile so I used the shuttle and it took about 30 minutes to get there.
I went to the expo on Saturday around noon and even though there were a ton of people, it didn’t even feel that crowded. I was able to get my bib, goody bag and shirt very easily.
{Lots of signage, lots of room, lots of vendors and things for sale}
I though the geometric OWN CHICAGO logo was kinda cool:
After checking out the expo, I got back in line to take the shuttle back downtown. This line was pretty long but moved quickly: it took about 20 minutes to get on a shuttle.
In the goody bag were a lot of flyers, a few samples and the race shirt:
THE START
The race starts (and finishes) in Grant Park at 7:30am. There are 2 waves: the second starts 30 mins after the first. And then the waves are broken down even further by qualifying times.
Because there’s so many runners, I would recommend getting there a little early, although I thought the start area was really well done and efficient. There were gates cordoning off different waves and directing runners where to go.
Dress appropriately! At 6:30am it was chilly and cold and a little windy! I wore a throwaway hat, gloves and sweatshirt as well as arm sleeves with my tank top. I tossed my hat and sweatshirt immediately but kept my gloves on for 8ish miles.
My experience was that there were plenty of porta potties in my corral area so I barely waited for one which was awesome and a little surprising with the amount of people.
The race started right on time and we took off through the city.
THE COURSE AND SUPPORT
The course is flat and fast; if you’re looking for a fast marathon, this is it. Just be sure to start in the appropriate corral and area so that you aren’t starting too slow, behind too many people because it will be crowded! This has to be one of the largest marathons in the world.
We ran all over the city and a lot of it was a blur for me, but I do remember running through downtown areas with tall buildings and then more urban park areas that were pretty with the fall colors. Reminded me of Central Park a little.
The only complaint I have is that I wish we could have run by the water.
The course support was like the rest of the race: very efficient. They know how to put on a big race and do it well. Water and Gatorade was offered every 1-2 miles by hundreds of volunteers. There was also Clif gels at mile 18 and bananas at a few later mile stations.
I didn’t have any issues with course support and thought the volunteers did a great job.
THE FINISH
The course is almost pancake flat except for a small hill at the very end. Because it’s at the end it feels tougher than it is, but it’s like a small overpass or something.
But once you crest it, you’re right at the finish with the grandstands of people cheering.
Once again, there were tons of volunteers at the finish giving out space blankets, water, helping anyone. Like NYCM, you have to walk a LONG ways to get out of the finish area. It definitely helps to have a phone to meet up with people because it’s a huge area!
If I remember correctly, I think they gave out bags with food and water in them, but maybe I’m making that up?! All my races are running together.
I didn’t do bag check so I’m not sure how that went or worked out.
THE SUMMARY
I loved this race. I would recommend anyone do it – just sign up as soon as it opens. You don’t have to qualify and you don’t have to enter a lottery. It’s a great city and a great experience.
It felt a lot like the New York City Marathon to me, and that’s my favorite race of them all. It’s a huge race with so many runners, but there weren’t any issues that I experienced – the big races know how to do them and do them right.
MY TIPS
*To get in, you gotta know when registration opens and sign up early!
*Pack for cold windy weather. That means throwaway clothes or bag check clothes before the race and bring clothes for after the race. I am always cold after a race so having sweats and a sweatshirt was nice.
*Book a hotel early. I booked through the hotel website, and the hotel wasn’t cheap but it was centrally located enough that we could walk to everything which was really nice. We didn’t have to worry about the metro or getting a cab.
*Bring a phone to meet up with your friends/family afterwards. Even though I was on the phone with the hus, it still took awhile for us to find each other.
*Give yourself enough time. It’s a big race with a lot of people so whether you’re going to the expo, to the start or looking for someone at the finish, remember that there’s 45,000 other runners doing the same thing so everything is going to take a little time. You can’t just roll up to the start at 7:25 and expect a smooth beginning, know what I mean?
*Enjoy it! Eat pizza, see the city, be a tourist. It was such a great weekend and fun race that I most definitely want to do it again!

Have you ever considered running the Detroit Marathon? Two countries, one marathon!!
one day i would love to!
That sounds cool!
This is definitely on my radar for next year. Chicago is my hubby’s hometown. My friends ran it 2 years ago and it was hotter there than Florida! They thought they were escaping the heat.
I have never been to Chicago, but looking at your pictures and hearing about the race makes me want to go do the marathon next year. I’m running NYC in a few weeks and I suspect that will become my favorite race of all time. I can’t wait!
I haven’t run a race in Chicago, but I did spend quite a bit of time there on business. And did run the lake path. It was gorgeous.
The Kidless Kronicles
I ran it this year as my first marathon and loved it! They did have a verizion tent in the finishers area where you could call family members. I thought that was a great touch especially since my phone died.
Will def. check Chicago off my list in 2013 or 2014
my favorite race ever was the Chicago HALF which took place on 9-11-11. The race was led by a fire truck from a NYC firehouse that lost every member on that fateful day. It was so patriotic and special, and it WAS along the water and beautiful every step.
I am so glad you had fun here. This is the first year in some years it wasn’t crazy hot. Marianos is a fairly new and wonderful grocery store here. I bet the food was great!
Looks like a great race! I am only a couple of hours from Chicago so I need to do at least the 1/2 marathon one of these years!
I have not yet ran a marathon in Chicago… yet I live in Chicago. Hopefully I run one some time soon!
I’ve never been to Chicago and this looks like a fun race! I’m all about a flat route!
Your making me want to run it next year!!!
We’re visiting Chicago right now, and I’m kicking myself that we couldn’t be here a couple of weeks earlier for the race. But we have to come back now. Sounds like an amazing race!
Philadelphia is my go-to every year. What a fantastic race. Mostly flat, great crowd support (although much of the second half quiets down significantly), a beautiful course, awesome expo (read: goodies galore + crawling with Runner’s World editors & staff), and despite its size, you CAN arrive just about 10 mins before the start, no problem. Easy access in and out of the city and race area. Highly recommended! Plus it’s pretty awesome to hear the Rocky theme echoing through the city prior to the gun going off
This marathon is on my to-do list. Perhaps next year!
Big fan of the flat races
I LOVE CHICAGO!!! ( I grew up here, so maybe I am a little biased) I have run this marathon many times! I highly recommend it!!! Race day for Chicago 2013 is October 13…Registration is in Feb 2013!!!
What a great race! I would love to run a big race in a big city someday!
Wow what a great re-cap! Makes me want to run this full marathon! I am 32 now and hope that by the time I’m 40 to have a marathon under my belt.
Thanks for this.
So glad you liked Chicago!! Best city ever in my opinion
running San Fran a week later KILLED me. It made me seriously appreciate the flatness of the Midwest! Awesome job on NWM- I don’t know how you did the full. I was struggling with the half. But that Tiffanys makes it kinda worth it. Come
Back to Chicago again gurl!
Would love to run Chicago someday. And now because of you I really want to run NY.
I ran Chicago on my 32nd birthday a few years ago and LOVED it! My marathon PR was set in Chicago, although I’m hoping to crush it later this year.
Super fun race, very well-organized and also flat and fast. What more could you ask for?! I can imagine it gets pretty crowded near the back, though, so I would definitely do whatever you can to get seeded in a higher corral.
As much as I loved Chicago, NYC is still my favorite marathon of all. That one is simply amazing in ways I can’t describe!
Sounds great! Would love to sign up and my only concern/fear (irrational!) is the temps since I’m from the tropics. BTW, do they have pace groups? And which hotel did you stay in?
they did have pace groups but i dont remember seeing them specificially. usually they’re on the 5 mins so 3:00, 3:05: 3:10, etc.
we stayed at the sofitel.
I am only a few hours’ drive from Chicago, so in Feb. this year I picked it to be THE ONE for my first marathon. What an awesome experience!! I’m so glad I picked a huge marathon like that, because honestly the crowd support is insane. The cheering fans and the excitement carried me through the whole 26.2 (or closer to 26.7 according to my Garmin!) I kept waiting for it to “feel hard” but it never did. It was so well organized, I couldn’t believe it. I agree, I wish the course went by the water too. But I highly, highly recommend this marathon to anyone – can’t wait to do it again next year!!
Chicago is my favorite marathon! Though I’m a little biased since I live here…. 2012 was my third Chicago!
Chicago sounds awesome! I’d love to run it some day. One of my running friends ran this year and had a huge PR and a great time.
It makes me so happy to see you loved the Chicago Marathon! I may be a bit biased but Chicago is an amazing city
I ran the Rock’N'Roll half marathon in Chicago this year! I love the course. We have friends just outside of Chicago, so it was nice to visit with them also. I already have plans to run the race next year!
I so want to run Chicago next year! My brother lives there and I ended up doing the Rock-n-Roll 1/2 this summer and I loved it!!!! Are you doing NYCM this year?
yes i am. super duper pooper excited about it.
I’m definitely going to put that race on my bucket list!
Glad you enjoyed Chi-town! I guess I’m sorta happy you ran it too…
I ran the marathon this year as well, and thought it was awesome. I am so glad that we had nice weather for it! I am pretty sure that had a lot to do with my 2.5 minute PR for sure! I loved the 2 wave start as well. I was shocked how easy it was to get settled in the corrals – I was in B. I had enough room to even sit and stretch. This will be on my list to definitely do again in the future!
Great re-cap! LOVE Chicago!
After reading this I think I am adding Chicago to my list! It sounds like fun!
I ran Chicago this year. It was my first marathon and easily one of my best running experiences! The volunteer support was incredible and I still can’t get over how many spectators there were! My suggestions would be to stay at a hotel in the Loop and near the start/finish. It was so nice to be able to walk to and from the race. I left my hotel 40 min before my corral started and I had plenty of time to take pictures, go to the bathroom and ditch throw-away clothes. I would also suggest going to the Expo early if you’re someone like me that wants to stock up on all of the Nike merchandise. It was absolutely packed when I went Saturday early-afternoon and almost all of the men’s and women’s Nike jackets were sold out by that point. Other than that, the race went off without a hitch, especially considering there were 45,000+ runners. Will definitely be signing up for next year’s race!
I agree, water would be nice…you were so close to it. I am all for the porta potties and water stations…that’s my top make or break for a race (not that I’m a seasoned runner or anything). Of course I’d love to run a race w/ pretty scenery, haven’t really done that yet…my options are limited here in AZ. I am looking forward to moving to Utah next year…gorgeous runs.
Logistically the lake front path won’t work for the marathon. They do it for the R&R half and it get really really crowded. Also the surface kind of stinks. Also, if you get a day with 25 mph headwinds, you will be glad your not on the lake! They don’t call it the windy city for no reason.
Glad you had a great time in Chicago.
I ran Chicago twice and loved it both times. Only complaint was dodging people the entire race (and getting tripped twice), but I’d do it again. Great city! Loved that there were spectators seemed like all 26 miles.
I’m from the Chicago area so I have done TONS of races in Chicago. The Chicago Marathon this year was my first ever marathon, and it was such an awesome experience! Definitely my favorite race so far! The Solider Field 10 Miler is also a great race – you finish on the 50 yard line of Soldier Field (where the Bears play), you get a lot of swag (shirt, medal, stadium blanket and free parking, which I’ve never seen at any other Chicago race), and the course is on the lakefront path, so right on Lake Michigan.
I did Chicago RnR this summer. It was hot and humid, but the course and course support was awesome.
Great touristy city, so I’d visit again.
I did it the last two years and it was in the mid 80′s both times. It’s great that you got some cold weather. This is the only marathon that I’ve done twice so it’s really special to me. Glad you had a good time! I agree, great race to run!
I’ll also add that crowd support is really fantastic. Chicagoans (?) love to cheer at their race!
I ran my first half marathon there last May (the Magellan Spring Half) and thought I was going to die. It was around 37 degrees and the winds were 25 knots and it was raining the whole time. So I definitely agree with your suggestions on packing for cold weather. Even in May. I foolishly thought May would be safe temperature-wise, but it was not.
Chicago is my hometown so I love hearing that you had such a great experience! The only thing I can think of about the water is that this race is just too big to try to fit everyone on the lake path. It is beautiful to run along the water though. The one half marathon I have done is held completely on the lake path as an out and back. It is a smaller race but you go along the lake and by the museaums and Soldier Field which is great! It is called the Chicago Spring Half Marathon.
I ran Chicago in 2010. worst marathon I have ever ran. not the actual marathon itself, but for me. it was hot -like 90 degress, I was delirious and just didn’t enjoy everything the course as to offer. I plan to run this again in 2013, but this time, enjoy it!!
JUst wanted to say AWESOME recap. Thanks. I will def look into this marathon on the future!!!! Hey did you get your Braologie goods yet? just curious how you like it?
yes i did, thank you! the bra is amazing, like a pushup/posture bra!
Great review! Super detailed and informative. I have family in Chicago, so this race is on my to-run list (some day!). Thanks!
Great recap. I ran as well and agree with everything you’ve written. Running along Lake mIchigan would have been awesome. To answer another PP, there are pace groups, every 5 minutes, starting at 3:00. I can’t speak for all of them, but mine went out way too fast. other than that, my only problem was my garmin. It was all over the place downtown. Maybe it was the tall buildings? Did anyone else experience this? Made me crazy.
i actually restarted my garmin at mile 3 because it was so off. it would say i was runnning 5 min miles and then 11 min, it was cray.
I ran Chicago for the first time this year and loved it!! I think our reviews are very similar
Great race review! I always worry about the toilet queues prior to races and it’s good to hear they had enough especially considering the entry numbers!
I’m running Florence Marathon in November (hoping for sub 3)and London in April. I can’t decide on the next one but think Chicago might be on my shortlist.
As i’m from the UK, I always get your blog updates in the early morning which gets me motivated to do my runs before work sometimes! Keep up the good work SR
thanks for reading from across the pond!
Definitely doing this race in the future!
Hi, I stumbled across this page and it’s brilliant. I was just wondering if bank of america did anything for the runners while they were in the actual marathon or if they just sponsored a lot of free stuff?
As far as I know, BofA was just the title sponsor for the race. I don’t think they gave out free stuff or had any perks.
Great recap! I have run this race twice and am running it again this year! I was one of the lucky few to register before the major website meltdown. I would be surprised if they don’t go to a lottery for 2014.
