I got rejected by Michael Phelps

by SkinnyRunner on October 13, 2012

WORKOUT -

Elliptical -

45mins

Story Time, kids!

Remember how I met Bob Harper last weekend and he was super nice and took a picture with me?!

007 (800x442)

Well, our good friends have been in town the past couple days and staying with us.  So last night we got out of our spandex and compression, dressed ourselves, and went to Laguna Beach for dinner.

The original plan was to have sushi, but we ended up at Asada in Laguna for Mexican food.

hello

And then we walked over to Three Seventy Common for a cocktail where this happened.

016

Yep, Michael Phelps was there, and I asked him for a picture and his friend said no.  The friend said something to the effect of, “If I let one person, I have to let 100.”

I wanted to say,

“There aren’t even 100 people in here!”

017 (435x800)

But I’m not that quick-witted so I didn’t.  I just walked back to my chair and gracefully choked on my tears.

And that’s the story of how I got turned down by the Great Phelps.  The end.

I’m off to San Francisco!

Ever met a celebrity?  Anyone super nice or super unfriendly?

On the celebricizing page is a list of “celebrities” I’ve seen or met.

***Bloggers dinner tonight at 7pm in San Fran at Sauce on Belden Place if you’d like to come.  This girl will be there!

***Also, if anyone wants to meet up for an early dinner/late lunch tomorrow, email me.

Um how presumptious of Phelps’ “handler” to even assume 100 people wanted his picture!! a hot blond girl asks for his picture and the answer is NO? these celebs think their you know what don’t stink like the rest of ours do. whatevah. his loss.

Ive met many athletes over the years. some arrogant some very nice. Michael Jordan was super nice. and very tall :-)

TorontoRunner October 13, 2012 at 1:20 pm

AH!! HUGE MJ fan, you always hear about him being very very arrogant and rude, so that’s great you have something different to say!

Living in Portland I have seen Kara Goucher and Shalane Flanagan out on their runs numerous times… I am always to embarrassed to stop their workout and shake their hands…. I keep telling myself that I should be carrying a black sharpie marker around at all times.. just in case I do work up the courage to stop and have them autograph-I don’t know what – my running shirt?

Sana October 13, 2012 at 10:12 am

Ew, I would not want a pic with Phelps.

Michael Phelps seems so nice and down to earth on interviews too! Booo!

One time at a Taylor Swift/Keith Urban concert and met Nicole Kidman in a hallway by the bathroom. She was super nice and took a pic with me and said in her cute accent to enjoy the show.

Leonor @FoodFaithFitness October 13, 2012 at 10:36 am

Oh well, you win some and lose some. I saw Deon Sanders once and his friends were not nice. Also saw Charles Barkley from the Phoenix Suns. He wasn’t any nicer. My BIL met Kelly Osbourne and even though she was looking rough, she took a pic with him and his fiance.

Losing Lindy October 13, 2012 at 10:37 am

Ugh you would think he would want the publicity, Bob is a much better person to meet anyway! ;)

Reply

Kelly October 13, 2012 at 10:56 am

Phelps = jerk. Boo to him.

Reply

Kathy October 13, 2012 at 10:56 am

I will take a picture with you whenever you ask…..ha!

Agree….I wouldn’t be too disappointed..BOB is way cooler than Michael!

Meredith October 13, 2012 at 11:01 am

Where did you get your fabulous shoes? Did you flash MP a little shoe action when you made your request? I think that if he had seen the shoes, he would have fallen all over himself to have his photo taken with SR and her fab heels. Clearly, he’s the one that missed out here.

SkinnyRunner October 13, 2012 at 1:30 pm

they are YSL from neiman marcus and SO uncomfortable!

Reply

Lili October 13, 2012 at 11:22 am

I get how you feel, but don’t be disappointed. Understand, he’s just a human being. Was he rude to you? Impolite? I don’t think so. He’s entitled to be in a hurry, in a bad mood or he just wanted to be left alone. It doesn’t mean he’s a bad person. There are so many photos of him with his fans, so he does say yes usually.

Reply

SkinnyRunner October 13, 2012 at 1:29 pm

yep totally i understand where he’s coming from.

Reply

Steph October 13, 2012 at 7:22 pm

He says no a lot more than he says yes. If there isn’t media around to say how nice he is he doesn’t bother. I’ve been around him quite a bit over the years since I was a swimmer and it’s not often pleasant. His mother is pretty rude too. The public image does not match the person.

Reply

Kim October 13, 2012 at 11:37 am

First of all, <3 bob!! he's amazing.

and i'm pretty bummed that MP sucks in real life. he would be one that i woulda thought would be into it!!

Was Michael Phelps “friend” Ryan Lochte?

I talked to Jim Caviezel on the phone once…

Reply

no it was an african american guy, much shorter than phelps.

Reply

I would’ve said “Remember that in 5 years when NO ONE is asking for your picture, douche!”

Reply

Lisa October 13, 2012 at 12:25 pm

Awe bummer, sounds like he was in a jerky mood. Not cool.
However, I love your outfit!

Reply

Sandy (SillyRunner) October 13, 2012 at 12:28 pm

Boo to Phelps. >:-( He may have swimming talent, but all that is moot when you consider that Bob Harper is talented AND he helps people get healthy! Bonus is he is wayyy hotter too! So Michael, you lose. Especially when you turn down the beautiful SR!!!

Reply

Katherine October 13, 2012 at 1:06 pm

Ive met taylor swift—she took a pic with me and said “omg youre tall like me” :) . It was AWESOME!
Also met Nicole Kidman at a Keith Urban concert that she was at. She looks kind of scary in person but took a pic with my sister and I! I told her that her daughter was born on my birthday…she wasnt too impressed haha.
Ive met various other country artists at concerts and they are usually super nice and will take pics with you.
Im jealous you met Bob though. BL is one of my fav shows.

I think Phelps can be a bit of a jerk, although I still respect him as an athlete. I just fell out of love with the whole drugs/party pics a few years ago.

We have our fair share of celebrities in NOLA, but the idea here is pretty much to let them be. Although I did run into Drew Brees in Audubon Park Monday and congratulated him on his record! But usually when I see the Jolie-Pitt types or Brees or whichever actor is in town I give them space. My husband, on the other hand, is a celebrity stalker!

Reply

hannah October 13, 2012 at 2:48 pm

“Wow, your MUCH shorter in real life…and even a different race..oh wait, you’re NOT Michael Phelps? Then don’t answer for him.” What an idiot. I really haven’t followed Michael Phelps’s activity so I have no opinion…other than he needs to choose his friends wiser.
I’ve seen handful of celebrities come and go living in NY, but never came in contact with any of them because I’m a chicken, lol. But I did serve drinks to John Lithgow and he was so nice–not in a creepy way, but very kind and down to earth. Celebs and athletes need to remember that fans give them that status they so find “annoying” now. I’m sorry, I’d love to take a pic with you too!

luv what you do October 13, 2012 at 3:14 pm

I’ve heard that MP can be a jerk! I love Bob Harper! I’m so jealous that you met him. I don’t think I’ve ever met a celebrity.

Reply

Ally October 13, 2012 at 3:57 pm

haha, well I hope Michael Phelps takes up running and starts reading more blogs because he will be sorry he turned down a chance to have HIS picture taken with the awesome SkinnyRunner!!
I hate getting turned down for autographs/pics. It makes me feel stupid for asking :/

haha, seriously though…I definitely spend a lot more time reading about you than Michael Phelps. For whatever that’s worth :)

Reply

stephanie rigg October 13, 2012 at 3:48 pm

OMG! What a jerk! I think it’s so stupid when celebs turn people down. Is it really that hard to get a picture taken with people?

Reply

SkinnyRunner October 13, 2012 at 5:01 pm

Reply

Sarah October 13, 2012 at 3:56 pm

Reply

Christine @ BookishlyB October 13, 2012 at 4:13 pm

It would have been nice if Phelps could say no himself, rather than cop out to a friend saying it, but I totally understand. Everyone’s entitled to a night out without “work” issues coming up. When I worked at UCLA Med Center we had patients come in that were famous but had to play it cool- no names :)

Reply

Krista October 13, 2012 at 4:19 pm

Geez, from the way people are acting you would think he kicked your dog or something. I’m pretty sure Michael Phelps earned his celebrity status from years of intense dedication to his sport, not from his fans. Would it have been nice to have gotten a picture? Of course. Is it really okay to judge someone who seemed to just want a night out with his friends? No. Just do a quick search and you’ll find tons of pictures and articles about how he’ll spend hours after events signing autographs and taking pictures with fans. He shouldn’t have to be available to the public all the time.

Reply

Maureen October 13, 2012 at 5:00 pm

The fact that he spends hours signing autographs doesn’t mean anything. If he had the balls to step up and tell SR that he didn’t want to take any pictures with her instead of having someone else speak on his behalf I think the replies would have been different.

Reply

Krista October 13, 2012 at 5:03 pm

I’m sure it means something to the kids who wait in line for hours to see him.

Reply

SkinnyRunner October 13, 2012 at 5:00 pm

totally agree, thats why im not judging him or saying anything negative about him and instead joking about it. although i would have like a pic, i understand that he cant say yes to everyone.

Reply

Krista October 13, 2012 at 5:07 pm

Oh, I thought your post was fine :) I would have been super disappointed to not get a picture.

I met Ryan Hall last year at IM Kona. Super cool guy, as nice in person and he appears everywhere else.

Earlier this year I met Chrissie Wellington (pro triathlete and reigning IM World Champion for about another 40 minutes) and she was great. Every picture you see of her has her smiling, and she just seems genuinely happy…she’ wasn’t forcing any of those smiles.

That is too bad. Especially if it was a small place and he wouldn’t have been mobbed. I would have taken it from a distance.

I’ve seen Eva Mendes, Kristen Johnson, Elton John, Anthony Hopkins, Gucci Mane, Tony Blair, Rafael Nadal, Rick Fox (so hot), Michelle Williams….

I shared an elevator with McLovin and chatted with him. At the same hotel, I had a long conversation with Melissa Joan Hart (Sabrina the teenage witch) about her weight loss. At another NYC hotel, I shared a elevator with Joel Madden and had a little chat. I can never bring myself to ask for a picture though.

Swimmers are not ever really celebrities….lots of people can swim, some are just faster, NBD

I saw Dennis Rodman twice & Yao Ming once on a place in China. Dennis Rodman talked to me. Seriously. I was driving down PCH & was stuck in traffic. He was in a red convertible, with his manager I think, & gestured for me to roll down my window & we got to talking. He was totally drugged up. You could see it in his eyes. Then I ran into him again at the OC airport. I dunno. Celebrity status isn’t such a huge deal in Cali, or maybe that is just me. But I think it’s common enough to run into the occasional celebrity. Oh… and the actor from JAWS (remember that movie?!?!)… yep. I met him at a food chain in the central valley.

Reply

Belinda October 13, 2012 at 11:22 pm

Boo hoo! Don’t worry, he should be lucky if you said yes to a photo with him, let alone the other way around!
He’s a goof anyway – just like Aus’s own Stephanie Rice, who Phelps hooked up with at Beijing in 2008! haha

Reply

Belinda October 13, 2012 at 11:27 pm

Oops forgot to mention, I’ve met Fletcher from Pennywise in Dee Why in Sydney – he was nice. I’ve met Chopper Reid on a plane coming home from Melbourne – he’s some Aussie criminal you may have heard of, he was actually pretty shy but still nice. Ryan Kwantan waved to us back in his Home and Away days in Australia. That’s all I can think of…

Luna665 October 14, 2012 at 3:58 am

I would never recognize him…or probably any other celebs…So chances are I would go and ask him to *take a picture of me and hubby* … LOL You know what?Next time you see him, just do that!I bet the look on his face would be priceless :D

I went to school at the University of Michigan and overlapped with him for a year. I never met him but the general thought on campus was that he was conceded and a jerk :( Sorry he wouldnt take a pic but Bob Harper is definitely WAY cooler!

I was 8 months pregnant and went to the celebrity golf tournament at Lake Tahoe. I had all of these celebs sign my belly. One guy that blew me off….Carlton. Alfonso Ribeiro. I asked him to sign my belly, he said, “um…I’m playing golf here.” I said, “You’re all playing golf.” And he just walked away. Then the crowd of people around us started giving him a hard time. Still didn’t sign my belly though.

Cheryl October 14, 2012 at 1:36 pm

I kind of get celebs being a little standoffish…but then not really. And that story sort of fulfills my mental image of him being a DB sadly. I mean, really. How many years til we are watching him on E! in his version of Kardashians? Please, get over yourself Phelps, your 15 minutes is over.

I met Lyle Lovett at the airport once, he flies United like the rest of us and was just strolling through the concourse with a garage, looking like his very identifiable adorable self. I walked up and said hi and he proceeded to talk to me for probably 10 minutes, as friendly as if he was a close family friend. And, was happy to take a picture with me.

Another great celeb was Chuck Hayes, NBA basketball player and fellow alum of my alma mater University of Kentucky. In Kentucky, amazing ball players like him are demi-gods and it was a huge huge deal for a big fan like me to run into him (also in the airport). He couldn’t have been nicer and I have a precious picture of the two of us.

I met Holly Madison in the Bellagio after Rock N Roll Vegas last year. She was having her picture taken by the Christmas tree and actually thanked me for stopping to take one with her! Super nice, super blode, super Barbie doll….and I was so post race stank I awkward stood by her afraid to get too close. Made for a cute picture though!

In 2002, I was on a sorority road trip and we stopped at a Dairy Queen in Luckenbach, TX. There were maybe 3 people inside and I noticed one of them was Thomas Hayden Church (Lowell from Wings). My uncle used to work as the set designer for the show, so I walked up to him, introduced myself and told him of my awesome Wings connection. I asked him for a photo with me and my sorority sisters and he totally shot me down. Said he “didn’t feel like taking photos today.” He was a total dick about it.

I’m from Baltimore and worked at the Starbucks that MP frequented and word on the street is he’s a major jerk, and has been since high school. I know very few people who have anything nice to say about him. Actually, I can think of one. So don’t feel bad.

Reply

Jessica October 15, 2012 at 11:24 am

O MP. What a bad move. Nothing like being rude to the very people who give you the status you enjoy!

I once met Avril Lavigne at a work event where she was accepting a significant cheque. She walked through a sea of small children begging for an autograph and acted like they were not there and promptly stood on stage, accepted her thousands of dollars with a scowl and left.

I met Chris LeDoux (country singer) and he was SUPER nice. I actually cried when I heard of his passing. An original cowboy the the core.

I’m a little embarrassed by this one, but I met all of the guys from 98 Degrees when they were popular and they were all super nice.

Oh, and I met the girls from Bomshel (country music, again) and they were really friendly, too.

I was at CPAC this last year and Allen Covert was there – he’s apparently a conservative Republican – makes me love him even more! I got an awesome picture with him, of course! He’s SUCH a great guy! Not many people recognized him, but I’m a huge fan of the movie Grandma’s Boy and many of the Adam Sandler movies were a staple of my late adolescent years so I recognized him right away.

Also, I met Richard Dreyfuss at CPAC the year before that and he took a picture with me, but he wasn’t quite as friendly…
