Questions by you guys, answers by moi.
Tipsey asked how often I weigh myself…
I actually haven’t weighed myself in a long time. no specific reason why. I kinda go through phases of weighing myself daily and then not at all for months. <—probably the worst way of all to do it
You can check out this post and weigh in (har har, what a pun) with other readers whether they weigh themselves regularly or not.
I feel like most of the time I have a pretty good idea on where I am based on my clothes fitting and how I feel about myself, but weighing in daily definitely helps some people keep on track.
And because someone will ask, I usually weigh somewhere around 130-132 lbs and am a sliver under 5’7”.
Brittany asked how long it took me to train for my first marathon…
I ran my very first half marathon back in the fall of 2008 pre-blog (the Nike Womens Half Marathon) and after that, fell in love with running, started going steady, asked it to marry me and went the distance with longer distances.
I ran 26.2 miles in training three times that spring and planned for an April first marathon but was sidelined by an injury.
So I guess from October to April is how long it took me to train? I didn’t follow a training program, just ran…. and got injured.
Note to the wise: don’t follow my “plan”.
{Not from the Nike race but wearing my finisher shirt so that counts for something, right? This pic is from an early 2009 race though, kicking it old school}
After taking about 4 months off for the injury and to commercial fish in Alaska, I ended up running my first marathon in December 2009 at the Rock ‘n’ Roll Las Vegas marathon.

Jennifer asked what I do for leg workouts besides running…
I try to go to a Body Pump-interval class at the gym once a week with Sheila when I’m in town, and I like to go to a Piloxing class taught by Bri, but that’s about it. I need to branch out and try new things, but hey, I just love running.
Melissa asked what gym I go to…
I have a membership to 24 Hour Fitness which I’ve had for about 6 years. There’s 2 locations within 5 miles of my house so I go to the smaller one for classes with Sheila and the bigger one to run on the treadmill because it has more TVs.
There’s tons of locations across the nation which is great because when we go to Houston to visit family, I can use the gyms there. And I only pay about $24 a month. In California dollars, that’s basically free.
Multiple people asked where I bought this jacket…
I told y’all I got it from Nordstrom Rack, but I found the post about it and actually bought it from Nordstrom. It was a Christmas gift from my mom and dad two years ago.
I love this jacket and wear it with anything, appropriate or not…
I just love leather jackets in general; I have black, grey, brown and off-white. They’re effortless and look a little tough and you don’t need any style to wear them!
{Here is one Michael Kors option and here is a more affordable option on sale.}
TorontoRunner asked if I hold my phone while running races and if I use it for music…
I usually don’t bring my phone to races, only the big ones (like NYCM) where meeting up with my husband afterwards could be difficult. I just turn it off and stick it in my SPIbelt.
I prefer not running with it, but with thousands of people around, it definitely makes finding your partner a lot easier.
I also don’t use it to play music because… it can’t. It’s superlame and old school. I have a really janky ipod (won’t turn off once it’s turned on, you can’t go back to a previous song, it’s really special) that I will bring in an armband.
Thanks all for the questions!

I am about your height and weight. (Twinsies!) I weigh myself everyday. It keeps me in check. I have an unlined leather jacket and never get to wear it because it’s always 100 degrees here in FL .
I never weigh myself so that every doctor’s visit can be a surprise! J/K. I don’t own a scale because I have no place to put one. My old (1909) apartment is a little light on the storage. But like you, I can guestimate from my clothes.
I feel you on the ipod. My husband cracked open his old, broken nano 3 last year and replaced the screen so I could use it. Now it is a warped mess of smeared epoxy and bent, damaged metal, but it sort of works! Just don’t ever remove the earbuds (they’ll never go back in right again) or expect to ever update a single playlist.
So I know you just answered a bunch of questions buttttt..
I’m curious as to what your tapering and recovery look like from a marathon. I know you’ve mentioned that you don’t really follow a strict training plan at all, but do you taper before a marathon? How about the week after for recovery?
Definitely appreciated this! Thanks for answering the questions. I’ve been reading a while and knew that you didn’t really follow a specific “plan” for marathon training so it is just incredible to me how you log all those miles on a daily basis. Amazing!
When did you first feel like a runner?
ill let you know when i do. probably after i get a sweet new running skirt?
I’m the same with going by how my clothes fit. I used to be a daily weigher, but it just made me crazy when the scale would jump around everyday and my moods were always dictated from what the number was. Not good for me.
I weight myself a couple times per week, just to see if I’m around where I should be– gotta make sure I stuff my face enough
I need to do a body pump class or something like that, I need more muscle!
I don’t weight myself either; heck we don’t even have a scale at home and I can count on 1 hand how many times I’ve stepped on the one in the gym. Speaking of which, that gym membership is a steal.
I stopped weighing myself last year when it started dictating my mood based on the #. I lost 110 pounds and was so accustomed to weighing myself at least once per week that it was hard to adjust to my body maintaining a healthy weight and seeing that once your fit, your weight does flucuate. Now i weigh maybe once every 2 months. Clothes are the true testament and how you feel!
wow that is amazing, congrats on your weight loss and coming to a healthier mindset about the scale.
I usually don’t weigh myself either but go by how my cloths fit and how I feel. I can tell if I’m eating one too many cookies. I’m 4 months preggo now. And you are weighed evey time you go to the docs (the most I’ve been weighed probably in five years). Its the only time In my life Where I am excited to get a belly! The best part-its not from beer or cookies.
Dang, that is cheap for your gym memberships. That’s one of the worst things about moving, losing your great deal on a gym membership you’ve had forever.
Nothin like a good leather jacket! Love it paired with that lace dress. And those leopard paints — wow, there are just no words.
i know, they’re pajama bottoms.
Great post-love getting to know my favorite bloggers better!
I weigh on Monday and Friday mornings. That way I kind of gauge what if I need to focus on counting calories or not. Its a checkpoint kind of thing to be sure I don’t get blind sided!
$24?! That’s amazing. We have some cheap gyms in Tallahassee but not that great for a gym that has all of the classes, etc of a 24 hour gym. I rarely weigh myself (don’t own a scale). I go by how my clothes fit and how I look.
I weigh myself only in the am, after #2, and couple times a week. My body does a great job of gaining weight all over so my clothes aren’t always a good measuring tool for me. I feel the scale just keeps me honest.
PS love your website and your good sense of humor.
Thanks for answering my question! And I love your jacket!
I also go to 24 Hour Fitness & pay $49/YEAR! Totally hope that sounds like I’m bragging
I’ve been a member for over TEN years now (yeah… I’m super old)… & paid the first three years upfront & have been paying $49/year ever since. And that’s my story.
I bought a scale for my boyfriend’s birthday last week… great present I know. We kind of let ourselves go recently so the scale is to keep ourselves on track.
