At the Ryder Cup and pizza

by SkinnyRunner on September 27, 2012

WORKOUT -

Ran at hotel gym -

7.0 miles/60 mins

1.0 incline

I know many of you said to go run around the lake here in Chicago and I really wanted to but just didn’t have time, had to get my runs in really early so it was to the gym I went.

But the gym’s nice so it wasn’t too bad.

002 (415x800)007 (450x800)008 (450x800)

The gym at the James Hotel is filled with tons of machines, almost too many to the point where you have to crawl over some to get to the treadmills.

006 (800x424)

But I love checking out new-to-me hotel gyms and this one was swank with fresh fruit-flavored water and TVs on every treadmill.

YESTERDAY

Last night I came back to the hotel, ordered pizza in and faceplanted into bed. About that pizza

fewpsdfew

I know I’m gonna break some hearts here, but I don’t know if deep dish pizza is all that and a bag of chips… It’s like polenta/cornbread casserole with a buttload of cheese.

I think I’m an NYC thin-crust pizza girl for life, but maybe I need to try it again.

I gotta run to catch my plane, but here’s a few pictures from yesterday:

Thanks to American Express, I was able to go to the Ryder Cup at Medinah Country Club and check out some of the AMEX cardmember perks.

2012-09-26_1729

Bianca, moi, The Awesomer, Afrobella, Factio Magazine, and  Fantabulously Frugal.

After seeing Bianca in pink jeans, I now want a pair.

017 (800x448)

American Express is all about giving the client (the cardholder) a better experience so all week they offer some cool things for free to anyone at the tournament, like training tips: Phil Mickelson’s personal trainer Sean Cochran gave us golf-specific exercise advice.

020 (732x800)

{Omg, I thought I was flexible…. no, no I’m not.  My hips don’t lie, they can’t move.}

You could also have your swing analyzed and get free advice like Afrobella did:

021 (450x800)

If you have an AMEX card, you can check out one of the coursecast TVs for free all day and get live streaming video and updates on it:

022 (800x447)

And anyone can take a break from watching golf and work on their own game…

Mine needs a lot of work.

I’m headed to the airport, but I’ll have another post about the rest of the day, the AMEX Hospitality Chalet, and how Bubba Watson wouldn’t stop following me around.

Wait a minute you go to a fancy VIP golf event and your husband isn’t there? Is he at home crying?

Reply

SkinnyRunner September 27, 2012 at 8:04 am

he’s actually at a golf work event right now in georgia so he’s crying but not weeping.

Ha! That is exactly what I was thinking, too. SR, I hope you brought him home some free swag. Gotta go miss some work deadlines so I can check out some of the cool bloggers you linked to in this post, thankyouverymuch. Don’t tell my boss.

Abby @ Change of Pace September 27, 2012 at 7:05 am

I’m thinking the same thing as Deirdre…Jaymo must be devestated he couldn’t be there!
I have to be honest, I don’t think I’m a deep dish pizza gal either.

Leonor @FoodFaithFitness September 27, 2012 at 7:06 am

Pink jeans and cheetah is where it’s at. Pizza in a a box isn’t as good as fresh out of the oven.

allison September 27, 2012 at 7:10 am

i’m from chicago and i also prefer thin crust. I will say though, that Uno’s is not a place I would ever go for dip dish. I do like dip dish (occasionally) and Gino’s East is probably the best place to go. I would try that next time you’re in town. And a lake run is a must. i’m so excited to hear what you think about the chicago marathon.

allison September 27, 2012 at 10:13 am

this is what i get for writing comments before i’ve had my morning coffee. i mean deep. not DIP. haha

It’s Pizzeria Uno a chain?? I think we have some here in NJ. Their pizza is def not my favorite but I assumed that’s because they were a chain.

Reply

Nicole@TheKidlessKronicles September 27, 2012 at 7:21 am

No need to apologize. I agree with you on the pizza. If I wanted to eat bread, I would eat bread.

I don’t know if you can make your deep dish judgment of pizza based on Pizzeria Uno. You’ve got to find a local place!

Reply

Amanda September 27, 2012 at 7:48 am

If you really want a Chicago deep dish, I would get a pizza from either Girodano’s, Gino’s East, or Lou Malnati’s. Uno’s is kind of ‘meh’ especially since they’re a chain and all :)

Reply

Jen September 27, 2012 at 8:40 am

I agree!

Reply

Chrysta September 28, 2012 at 3:03 pm

I second the above. Uno’s is not a good representation of Chicago deep dish. Go with one of the 3 Amanda suggested. I personally love Giordanos. When ever I fly back to Chi I also bring pizza back to TN with me.

Reply

HilJo October 1, 2012 at 8:08 am

Giordanos. GREAT pizza, delicious crust–my inlaws just left us half of one since they stopped by on their way back from chicago and I JUST ate a slice–SO GOOD. I usually like thin crust, but giordanos has me won over :)

Melodie September 27, 2012 at 7:48 am

I was going to mention the ‘casserole’ nature of a deep dish pizza before you left, but you came to your own conclusion – a bit much!
LOVE the James.

Jessica Jones September 27, 2012 at 7:51 am

Good thing you weren’t in that flight with the weirdo!

Reply

Kristin September 27, 2012 at 8:05 am

With you on the deep dish. Whenever I visit my sister in Chicago we hit up a great little pizza place that has coal fired pizza – oddly its called Coal Fire & its on Grand. Its out of downtown too, which I prefer since you aren’t surrounded with a ton of tourists.

Reply

Jill September 27, 2012 at 8:24 am

Sorry you had a bad pizza experience. I’m a Chicago girl and would not recommend Uno’s. When you are back in town for the marathon, try Giordano’s, much better!

Reply

Kristen @ The Balanced Bowl September 27, 2012 at 8:38 am

Looks like you are having a great time! I’m with you on the pizza….deep dish doesn’t appeal to me AT ALL. The thinner the crust the better for me….and crispy – now that’s all that and a bag of chips. :-)

Reply

Leah September 27, 2012 at 9:11 am

I’m with ya girl! If I wanted a casserole I would eat a casserole. Thin crust is where it’s at.

Reply

Lacey @ FamilyFitnessandFoodery September 27, 2012 at 9:26 am

I have NEVER stayed at a hotel that had a whoop ass gym like that. I would run there any time!
Not a fan of the deep dish either. Thin 100%! I like a crispy crust.

Reply

Candice September 27, 2012 at 10:22 am

I just moved to Chicago from The OC a few months ago. I totally agree….. Not a fan of the deep dish. But that’s the same place I tried it from. Maybe I need to try somewhere else. Good luck at the Chicago Marathon! It goes right in front of my house. I’ll be cheering you on!!! Email me if ya want to meet at Pinkberry. Yum :)

Shay @ Whine Less, Breathe More September 27, 2012 at 10:22 am

That pizza does not look so appealing. :-/

Reply

Karen @ Runner Girl Eats September 27, 2012 at 10:30 am

I agree 100%, NYC thin crust will always beat deep dish. But I have had some good deep dish pizzas in the past. I think you should give it another try somewhere besides UNO.

Annette@FitnessPerks September 27, 2012 at 10:52 am

I love any kind of good pizza actually :)

What a fun event!

Anyone who knows and loves Chicago pizza just screamed in horror when they saw you’ve based your opinion of deep dish pizza on Uno’s.

This is a tragedy.

Me too. Yeesh. I would agree with Gino’s East and Lou Malnati’s, but i would put Pequod’s at the top of the list.

Reply

Kim September 29, 2012 at 11:58 am

I LOVE Pequod’s!! That crust is soooo good.

I’m not a huge fan of Uno’s pizza…but now I’m craving pizza :)

Reply

D. September 27, 2012 at 12:58 pm

You ordered from quite possibly the WORST place to get pizza in the city!!!!! Gino’s East is even better than UNOs.

Of the deep dish variety, lou malnati’s is probably the best.

Reply

Candace September 27, 2012 at 1:09 pm

SR! Uno’s was a poor choice, I’m so sorry you had to endure that. I mean honestly, it doesn’t even LOOK good. You must give deep dish another try: definitely either Giordano’s or Lou Malnati’s. I’m going to be in the Chi bright and early tomorrow…maybe I’ll see you roaming the magnificent mile!

Reply

SkinnyRunner September 27, 2012 at 1:23 pm

im already flying home, sorry!

Reply

Monica September 27, 2012 at 1:11 pm

Uno’s is the absolute worst– should have gone for Giordano’s or Lou Malnati’s!!!

Reply

Catherine September 27, 2012 at 1:30 pm

Im sure you’ve heard this enough by now…but Uno’s is NOT the pizza to get! Blech!!!!! Lou Malnattis, Gino’s, heck even Mario’s or Giordanos would’ve been better… That wasn’t a good representation of Chicago pizza. And Uno’s is also in Oklahoma(where I’m at now) so it doesn’t count…(as pizza at all in my opinion lol!) I’m mean!

Reply

Paula @ Eat: Watch: Run September 27, 2012 at 2:11 pm

I don’t like deep dish pizza either – the only one I’ve ever found that I like is in Chicago though (Lou Malnati’s). So get on top of that.

Reply

Paula @ Eat: Watch: Run September 27, 2012 at 2:13 pm

P.S. I did find it weird that everyone was recommending Uno’s. That place is everywhere (including Orlando), so I wouldn’t call it Chicago pizza. My dad liked Uno’s and he’s from Chicago too, so what do I know?

Reply

Kassidy September 27, 2012 at 2:23 pm

You need authentic deep dish pizza, not UNO’s!

I know a lot of people have weighed in here, but if you didn’t like the cornmeal crust from Uno’s, you wouldn’t like Gino’s East either. I don’t like them either, and I’m from Chicago. I personally like Giordanno’s. Lou Malnati’s is good too. And I know you’re probably already gone, but you may like that one the best. The crust is thinner but still delicious. Anyway, just my opinion.

Uno is commercialized Chicago pizza, not pie. Next time try Lou Malnati’s…or, just have one shipped to you in Cali. I’m planning to do the same….haven’t had a good pie here in CA yet. But the meth is off the chain! Kidding.

Reply

Stacy September 29, 2012 at 11:03 am

As others have mentioned, Uno’s is a Chicago pizza wannabe. It is a total national (at least in many areas) chain and NOT the good stuff. Lou Malnati’s or Gino’s is where its at if you are ever back in town. :)

Reply

Monica September 29, 2012 at 11:07 am

If you’re still in Chicago, try Lou Malnati’s deep dish or Giordano’s! Also, as a peer coffee lover on International coffee day, if you get a chance, try Intelligentsia coffee- it’s delish.

Reply

Ashley September 30, 2012 at 10:51 am

Yes, you must go back and get Giordanno’s. Best. Everrrrrrr.
