Off to Chicago!

by SkinnyRunner on September 25, 2012

WORKOUT -

Ran on TM -

7.0 miles/61 mins

1.0 incline

nice, relaxed pace

A super duper ridiculously early workout because I’m headed to Chicago this morning for an event tomorrow.

Dead batteries are bad, dead goldfish are even worse.  Dead airports?  super awesome.

002 (800x430)

The John Wayne Airport is pretty small, but they recently opened a new wing with a pinkberry and a Javi’s.  I love me some froyo (are bloggers even allowed to not love froyo?!  don’t think so) but I’ve never tried pinkberry.  I wanna serve my self, dang it.

003 (800x446)

I’ll be back Thursday so this is all I packed… slightly scared about the lack of clothes… so if you see someone half-clothed wandering the streets of Chicago in a daze begging for deep dish pizza that’s totally not me.

003 (800x446)

Set out clothes for this morning including my $20 JCPenney top and Prada wedges.  I’m a total cheapwad who likes overpriced shoes, hoarding free fast food condiments, picking up change on my runs and hiding it in Swiss bank accounts.  What, like that’s weird?

002 (416x800)

Uhhh, yeah.  That sounded nice yesterday, but at 4am I went for comfort which means workout wear and wet hair, a great look.

007 (450x800)

YESTERDAY

We took Marni on a 2.1 mile walk at noon and she barely made it; we had to take some rest/shade/water breaks, but I told her to suck it up and finish strong.  Her problem is pacing – she starts off the line way too fast every time.

Then Monica and I did a 4 miler later in the afternoon followed by a little grocery shopping.  Champagne on sale! best day of my life!

Probably at least one of the top 35 ugliest pictures of me… this week.  Thanks so much, Monica.

Deep dish or thin crust?

I’ve never had deep dish so after the marathon on October 7th, IT IS ON.

Here, we have Greek-style pizza which is kind of a combination of deep dish and thin crust and it is spectacular. I could really go for some pizza right now.

Hope you have a great trip. I would have gone for workout clothes on the flight, too.

Safe travels! Pizzeria Due is the place for Chicago deep dish, although most opt for Lou Malnati’s.

I usually get thin crust (when I have it often), but go DEEP DISH when it counts (such as after running a marathon or if you’re in Chicago ;)

I was in Chicago recently and had deep dish for the first time at Giordano’s – it was amazing, really huge, very tasty, went into a total food coma after eating 1.5 slices at lunch. Then had .5 slice for dinner and that was all the food I needed that day.

Welcome to Chicago! Pequod’s in Lincoln Park has great deep dish too if you want to skip the touristy pizza joints and find more a neighborhood place. What even are you in town for?

christa September 25, 2012 at 9:57 am

I like flatbread pizza best. But really I love all pizza:)

Jenn September 25, 2012 at 9:57 am

Welcome to Chicago! Love your blog and thrilled to be sharing the marathon field with you on 10/7. The Pizzeria Due recommendation above is great, but they will be mobbed! Other options are Art of Pizza or Pequods on the Northside of the city, (Lincoln Park). Pequods has the most amazing carmelized crust!!

SR, you will not regret getting your post race pizza at Lou Malnatis. If that day wasn’t my birthday, I’d take you there myself! But please go! It is the best! They have awesome deep dish and salads.

Agreed! Lou Malnati’s is awesome; I went to Chicago over the summer and I still think about that pizza.

Deep dish or thin crust?

Thin crust always UNLESS you are in Chicago. Then you have deep dish: Lou Malnati’s or Giordano’s. That’s how deep is done, right!

Enjoy and safe travels.

SR-by my calculation that is 3 trips to Chicago within a month – now, marathon & Zooma?

My vote is thin crust. Deep dish makes me feel like I ate a whole Thanskgiving dinner.

Yay for Chicago! Deep dish all the way!

I’m a Chicago native, and there’s no doubt about it – the BEST recovery food after the Chicago Marathon is Lou Malnati’s deep dish – hands down. I’m sitting this year’s race out, but I figure I still deserve a few slices after cheering for the rest of my running team all day. Best of luck in the race – keeping my fingers crossed for great weather this year.

Chicago FTW! Don’t even worry about it if you see some creepy girl following you around-it’s not me. Definitely not me.

My cousins live in Chicago and I visited for the first time last year! It’s such an awesome city. It’s huge, but feels small and it’s so much cleaner than New York.

We went to Gino’s East and the pizza was DELISH, but I have to worn you…it will make you feel sick, so don’t eat too much. I know that is insane to say because there is no such thing as too much pizza, but it’s as intense as it looks!

Leslie September 25, 2012 at 11:09 am

We live in Chicago – you need some recommendations for deep dish, you let us know! Lou Malnati’s is where it’s at! Also, my hubby is running the Chicago full, I’ll be cheering you runners on!

I might have said this once or 100 times before and I’m for sure gonna repeat the crap out of myself, but SR, you inspire me! Seriously, I love your dedication. And self-deprecation. Are those Skittles? And what type of running shoe do you have on your tootsies there? The cool maroon looking ones. Deets, please.

Casey @ Waffling September 25, 2012 at 11:35 am

Due or Uno (I think its called) are THE places for deep dish. they are across the street from eachother so just go to the emptier one. You order your pizza before you even get sat because it takes awhile to cook that deliciousness.

Lauren @ Part Time House Wife September 25, 2012 at 11:50 am

I’m in route to chicaggle too… So if you see a girl in the same leggings and oversized sweater in a pizza place and or fro-yo spot it’s me. I packed extra light. One outfit. One workout out fit.. Done. To be fair I’m only staying til tomorrow

DEEP DISH…non of this wimpy New York stuff. My recommendation is Pizzeria Uno in downtown Chicago.

Mandi @ Miles and Mascara September 25, 2012 at 12:01 pm

Oof, tough decisions but I love a thin crust. Crispity and crunchity crust. I’ve never had a Chi-town pizza, though. It sounds as if it could be life altering. Enjoy!

We’ll be in Chicago for the marathon! I had to bow out due to a stress fracture but my boyfriend is running it. LOVE me some deep dish pizza. Echoing an earlier reply, Pequod’s is freaking amazing and HANDS DOWN my favorite pizza place in Chicago (I’ve tried many of them since college) and, dare I say, my favorite pizza EVER. Go there. After the race. On Sunday. I’m hoping to be there myself :)

Remember how I’m taking your Austin advice with The Salt Lick? Well, I am from Chicago and for the love of all things holy, go to Lou Malnati’s for deep dish.
I love it so much that my family always buys it for me and has it shipped in dry ice to me so I can enjoy it in Orlando. They’re delivery is good, but nothing like in the restaurant.

Deep dish is Gooooood!

I too go ‘workout’ clothes route when travelling. I personally think it’s silly to get all gussied up to fly–so uncomfortable! hah.

Nicole@TheKidlessKronicles September 25, 2012 at 2:05 pm

Thin thin thin. I spent some time in Chicago a couple of years ago. Was there every other week on business for months. Did NOT get on the deep dish train at all.

Go to Lou Mitchell’s for breakfast. YUM!

Girl, what time did you get up to work out!?! You are amazing! My other half gets crabby when I get up before the sun comes up and turn on ANY lights. So I stumble around in the dark sometimes using the light of my phone to find stuff. Seriously, when’s a girl supposed to work out!! Have fun in chi-town!

Thin crust all the way!
That is exactly what I would have opted for as travel wear … except that I might have had dirty rather than clean wet hair …

You must go to Lou Malnati’s!!!! It’s amazing. Go here, http://giraffesandhiccups.blogspot.com/2012/09/heaven-in-pan.html, for pictures I took a few years ago. I just posted them on my blog so you could see what awaits you in pizza heaven! Ahhh jealous!

I’m a born and raised Chicagoian, so deep dish all the way. If you get a chance, try either Uno or Due (basically brother/sister restaurants). BEST deep dish in Chicago, hands down.

THIN CRUST!!!! We are new to the ‘burbs of Chi-Town- and I have tried EVERY possible stuffed and pan pizza around- I think the best is Giordano’s downtown… I am still partial to thin crust and we have to ask for it “pie sliced” otherwise they do this WACKY little square cuts of pizza! We moved out here (from Portland,OR) this summer. I had signed up for Chicago marathon on Oct 7th (I have ran Portland 2 times) and I am excited and nervous about Chicago! I will look for you- HA! I am sure that would be like searching for a needle in a haystack! Best of luck to you!!! Love your blog!!!!

Chicago Pizza & Grinder oven Co. was a great visit in Chicago. It was right near Lincoln Park.

Although I’m a NY pizza gal, Chicago Pizza and Oven Grinder Co was yummy. Picture a pizza pot pie! I have pictures here and a few other places we ate at: http://www.runtomunch.com/exploring-chicago-ukrainian-village-lincoln-park-zoo/

OK, this has nothing to do with anything you actually said but I figured you’d like that even more…are those TB shoes comfy? I bought a pair of Reva’s and returned them b/c while I thought I had “normal” sized feet apparently they’re too fat for her shoes. But those may be better I’m thinking…
