How to run 20 miles: watch mindless TV

by SkinnyRunner on September 24, 2012

WORKOUT -

Ran on TM -

20.0 miles/2:36

1.0 incline

A new TM distance record for me

When you get up at 5am and start the day by being all bossypants and commanding people around, you better put up or shut up.

So I did my long run on the treadmill.  Thank you, Heavenly Father for the excessive amount of Emmy coverage this morning.

Chicago’s in 12 days and it’s my first race (and marathon) since the beginning of June so I want to make sure I have the base which means long runs.

That’s really the only thing I worry about – getting the long runs in.  I figure the speed will come around eventually, but it’s a whole other level of hurt when you’re not prepared for the distance.  That’s why I love running back-to-back marathons: at least you know you can finish.  And you don’t have to do long runs!  The race is the long run.

Anyways, the run looked like this:

65 mins/8.35 miles – the treadmill goes up to 60 minutes and then 5 more for a “cool down”.

25 mins/3.25 miles – after this, I filled my water bottle and changed into dry clothes since I was soaking wet and getting the wet-short-creep going on.  Ate a gel.

002 (521x800)004 (486x800)

65 mins/8.3 miles – same thing as the first hour but paused at 30 minutes to refill my water bottle again and take another gel.

1 min/.1 – finished with 20 exactly for an average pace of 7:48.

And then I came home and had just a smidge of salt…

007 (800x409)

The Garmin giveaway will be up this afternoon so check back this afternoon!

Have you ever won anything from a giveaway, raffle, scratch off ticket, lottery?

I recently won a pair of workout pants from Sana and a bra fitting/bras from Hanna.

20 miles on a treadmill is rough. I once did it when Mike was at a poker night with his friends and I was bored and wanted to see how far I could go. Never again!

I went three weeks where I won something every week on a blog. It’d be awesome if that happened again :)

I’m so glad you posted this! With the cold weather coming up, I was worried about the long runs at a gym with a treadmill that goes only up to 60 mins. A break to restart still counts as a continuous long run? Thanks!!

Reply

SkinnyRunner September 24, 2012 at 10:30 am

heck yeah, i say take as many breaks as you want. if youre spending that much time on a treadmill, you gotta be crazy or something. or at least me :)

20 on a treadmill – wowza – nice job!

I won Fage yogurt on stuftmama.com and a few bucks on random scratch off tickets. The yogurt was awesome!

Looks like you had a fun weekend! How the heck anyone can run more than 3 miles on the treadmill is beyond me. Though my 3 miles and your 20 miles are probably close in time….

I have have never won any blog giveaways and honestly think I am going to each time I enter. I will be back for the Garmin giveaway for sure. I did win a free entry to our church’s women’s retreat earlier this year which was very cool. I had already registered so I gifted it to my sister so she could join me – about $250 value and we had a great weekend. Very cool.

BIC band question for you…

I am running my first marathon in 3 wks, and always usually wear some sort of headband. I want to try out a BIC band, but wanted to see if you had any preference on the sizing. The one I want (thin size) is sold out so I am considering the larger size or the mini size. I know you are the expert…Any thoughts??

PS…20 miles on a treadmill is INSANE!!!

PPS…Like 11 years ago, I once won front row tickets on the radio to see Elton John and Billy Joel. I took my mom and we had the best time!!!

SkinnyRunner September 24, 2012 at 10:48 am

i think for the BIC Bands, its just aesthetic preference, whatever look you like best. they all stick and dont move regardless of width. i have all sizes, from the skinnie minnies to the thickest ones and they all work well. the bigger the band, the louder the print but sometimems thats the fun part. for one race i wore a super super high on my head topknot and a big colorful bic band: http://skinnyrunner.com/2012/03/25/hot-chocolate-15k-race-recap/

I don’t think I’ve won anything from a blog? I keep telling my husband I’m counting on him to win the lottery, so I can quit working. But so far, he’s sucked at this part of his job.

I’ve done a coupld 20′s and a 22 on the treadmill. I love the treadmill. I can watch anything I want, without anyone yapping at me about how dumb the real housewives are.

Nicole@TheKidlessKronicles September 24, 2012 at 10:51 am

I haven’t won anything to speak of. It is my time!

I don’t know how you kept climbing back on that treadmill. I can’t stand that they reset like that.

I better win your garmin giveaway!!

Can’t wait to be able to run 20 miles period!
Also, LOVE awards season purely for the gown coverage! (The pretty and the awkward)

Wow 20 miles on a treadmill! I did 22 miles on the road yesterday (my longest run ever) and thought about quitting very often, but I ran 11 miles one way, so I had to run 11 miles back to get home. That kept me running. If I would have been on a treadmill I would have quit after mile 15.

I haven’t won anything but my parents once won a car, a convertible no less! It was from a raffle my sister’s high school was having. We had the car for almost ten years. Sad day when my dad had to get rid of it.

I’m so impressed you are able to do 20 miles on the treadmill! I haven’t really tried the LR on the treadmill yet — though I’m sure someday it will happen.

I’ve never won anything on a blog, but this spring I won a door prize at an event I went to. I was so freakin’ excited!

Good job on the long run! The longest I’ve even ran on the treadmill is 15 miles. And I JUST won some Clif bars from Monica! It’s, like, the first thing I’ve won e-ver.

Mindless TV or mindless magazines make time FLY on the treadmill! SO true. (i can read while running, it’s magical!)

I’ve done up to 16 miles on the TM, but 20 is impressive! WOW. I actually don’t mind the treadmill now (I hated it after that 16 miler back in the day. haha). Now I do 5-8 miles on it. Not bad and can get ‘er done in an hour or so. I like your running skirt!

Great job on the TM run! I think I could possibly run on the TM if it was back to back episodes of the Kardashians. Not 20 miles, though.

Alright, I’ve got questions. A) I have no idea how in the hell you manage to run 20 miles on the TM. Girl, impressive. And I totally realize this is a statement not a question. B) Who takes your kitchen pictures or do you use a tripod or something? C) How are you liking the pickle almonds? And lastly, D) No, I have never won anything! I would love to win something, though. Again with the non-question statements.

SkinnyRunner September 24, 2012 at 12:54 pm

a) thank you. i think im just crazy.
b) i have it on a timer and set it on the coffee pot. glamorous.
c) the pickle almonds were good. as of right now, theyre officially gone. i bought them one week ago today.
d) good luck!

I’ve never won anything on a blog but I have run 20 miles on a treadmill! More than once, actually. I actually like running on the treadmill quite a bit because I can just zone out and watch a movie or a TV series on Netflix.

Although I’d still rather be outside, I have toddlers and the treadmill has been my lifesaver for sure.

I did the big cottonwood marathon on sat without ANY long runs.. Seriously, my longest run in the last 2 months was a 10k.. Needless to say, I got a PR for my slowest marathon ever… But I actually felt great up until mile 20.. The first 14 miles was a 9,000 feet elevation drop! That down hill killed me.. Then mile 15-24 were rollers and the last 2 miles were UP.
Long runs are def. important.;)

This is so ridicules and redneck but one time like 6-7 years ago I was at the state FFA convention and our school won a drawing for a small livestock scale. (you would weigh pigs, goats, sheep etc) in it. My friend and i started jumping up and down like we won the lottery. They panned the arena camera to us and put us acting like crackheads on the big screen. We weren’t even that excited about the prize, we had just never won anything in our lives.
Tragic I know…

I entered a raffle for the opera once (each ticket was $100) and I won a Mercedes Benz CLK 320. BOOM. Truly, I didn’t mind spending that much money on one ticket since the money was used to introduce kids to opera music and arts. I drove that car for about three years and loved how snazzy I felt. :-)

I’m about to buy a tv to put in front of my treadmill as I train for my first marathon, Little Rock next March. Thanks for the tip!

About ten years ago I bought a raffle ticket for our local opera raffle (it was $100 per ticket) and I won a Mercedez Benz CLK 320. BOOM. I loved how snazzy I felt in that car. :-) FYI, I didn’t mind spending that much money on one ticket since the money was used to introduce kids to opera music and the arts.

I’m trai ing for my first marathon (Little Rock, ’cause I want that huge medal) and I’ll be buying a tv to put in front of my treadmill for my long runs. Thanks for the tips! I love your blog!

I’ve lately been entering sweepstakes for fun while watching TV and I’ve won a beanie, a $15 wendy’s GC, redbox credit, and livenation credits…woot!

The best thing I ever won though was a freakin’ PLAYHOUSE when I was 8. I entered at this store and they called my mom and said I won! It had 2 windows, a loft, and a door that locks. It was awesome.

The first thing I ever won was an entry for the Chicago marathon in ’09- Nike came and gave one away at our local running store in CO shortly after it had filled. It was awesome! The only other thing I’ve won is the iPad I’m reading from right now. Two pretty sweet prizes for a gal that had never won anything in a raffle or giveaway before!

20mi on the TM is awesome! Lately I’ve been loving the TM, but haven’t been running the past few weeks at all thanks to some hip rotator issues. *sadface* But once I’m cleared, I’m sure I’ll be spending a lot of time on it.
I won a CW-X compression sports bra at a local running store raffle. It was that or a running half zip jacket, but living in FL doesnt call for long sleeve running jackets enough to pick that.
