Back in June I spent 9 days at my mom’s condo in Oregon, and we worked on her front entry way, redecorating and painting it.
You can see the before pictures here and this is the finished project:
The bench, wicker baskets and bench cushion are all from Pottery Barn. We also put in a new light fixture and painted the walls and baseboards.
That’s an old oar and a Japanese glass float in the corner.
My mom made the pillows herself. She wanted to add some red and saw similar pillow pictures on Pinterest and just made them without a pattern or anything. hot dang.
For the record, I don’t even sew buttons on. My husband does it for me.
Somewhere my mom is crying silent tears of shame.
Some more fun touches were the shell mirror by the front door and glass knobs for the closet doors. We went to a local store called Vintage Hardware and found them.
My dad found the brass bell at a recycling center (he was probably doing his Christmas shopping for us all).
So that’s the entry.
While I was home in June I also forced my mom to order new barstools. The old ones that came with the place were really uncomfortable and really ugly, a double whammy of disaster.
So she ordered these customized barstools/chairs from Ballard Designs that took about 8 weeks to arrive so I hadn’t seen them until this last trip.
My mom wanted a bar stool or chair that swiveled, had a back and most of all, was comfortable. I just love the stripes and the metal grommets.
By the way, my mom noticed one seam on the chair coming undone so she called Ballard and instead of sending a repairman or seamstress over, they’re sending her two brand new chairs. great customer service.
Now on my last trip we worked on my parents’ bedroom. The wall below used to be all mirrors (my dream room since I love looking at myself), but my mom wasn’t into it as much.
She had the mirrors taken down and then we had to spackle, sand and texturize a bunch of areas before and during painting.
I ended up texturizing, painting and then re-texturizing three times to get it looking right. I get an A for enthusiasm and a D for execution.
We painted the other walls a lighter color and then went to work on the closet doors. These things haunt me in my sleep: they take about 3-4 coats of paint and I had so many drips and mistakes that I don’t know if they were better off the original color or with my painting.
(My mom had to do some major fixing and repairing to my paint job once I left.)
The main accent wall was finally painted after 47 coats.
The two glass lamps were bought from Costco for about $60, a smoking deal.
My mom also ordered a new bedroom set. It took some major convincing/threatening from me to get her to do it, but she has never had a new bedroom furniture set and I think she dang well deserves it now.
It will be here in a couple weeks and she’s also making curtains and doing a couple other things so I’ll have to show you the complete room redo the next time I’m back in town in December.
The colors we used:
The main bedroom wall/accent wall: Martha Stewart Brown Alpaca MSL204
The other bedroom walls: Martha Steward Buckwheat Flour MSL206
Trim, closet doors: Behr Ultra Pure White Paint and Primer in One
And one last project that my mom saw on Pinterest and made:
Cute, no?
She wants to hang a bunch of family photos framed in different styles of black frames all around the wall. We just put that one wedding picture there because there was a nail hole.

Love the bedroom colors and lamps! Amazing what you can find at Costco!!
Your mamma is so adorable and crafty! I think those bar stools are BEAUUTIFUL!
I love seeing the before and after! I love those pillows and the “family” sign your mom made…too cute.
Quite the projects you had going on. And next time we need bar stools, I know exactly where to go.
Nice job!
The Kidless Kronicles
You girls did a great job. Those closet doors look like pure hell to paint.
Can your mom make those pillows for me too?! They’re gorgeous. Ans she’s so creative.
I love re-decorating!
Your mom needs to show up how she made that “family” sign…so cute!!! Or share the link from pinterest!
I feel your pain with those closet doors. I just primed the paneling in our dining room and am prepared for a million coats of paint to cover that awfulness up.
The entryway looks awesome!!
So you’re a hottie with a body, your run like a beast… and you can decorate?! Your man has officially WON! The projects look amazing. Please come to my house.
awh geez, im blushing…
Looks great! I love the entry way and family sign! Great job!
I have always loved redecorating and with Pinterest existing now, I’m pretty sure my fiance doesn’t know whose house he’s walked in to on a weekly basis. Those projects look great, awesome work!
I loooooove the “family” wall hanging! That’s so cool that your mom sees these on Pinterest and just gets right into it (I usually look at the stuff and think they’re cool… but I don’t actually make them, haha).
COOL! I too can’t sew much, but my momma is amazing. And I don’t do home improvement projects….at least right now I don’t. Hah. Once we finally settle down & buy something, maybe I will.
LOVE that last family project-hanging thing!
I am in love with those bar stool/chairs from Ballard Designs! I love Ballard Designs so much and I order so many things from there! I recently got an area rug and a tote bag and they have the best prices!
The house looks great! We recently updated our bedroom as well and went with almost the exact color of paint! It’s a great color that y’all chose and looks so chic and clean!
I love the entry way. I love nautical stuff but I don’t have a home designer bone in my body. I just have to admire others!
I am in love with those bar stool/chairs from Ballard Designs!
