PACKIN’ HEAT

In October I’ll be traveling to the ZOOMA Great Lakes Half Marathon along with a bunch of other races ( 4 marathons, 1 half and 1 ultra relay in 6 consecutive weeks).

So I thought I’d do a post on what to pack when traveling to a destination race.

I’ve been asked this question a couple times and although you can go Google a far better written answer, on here you might find some celebrity weight loss and marriage gossip along with your packing list.

jessica-simpson-2-3001B25FE5B

WHAT TO PACK:

1. The Invisible Man – your race outfit

Lay out your entire race outfit from toes to head as if you were dressing an invisible person.  or a zombie if you’re into that sorta thing.  Start at the very bottom and work your way up.

007 (368x800)

{shoes, socks, compression sleeves, shorts/skirt/tights, sports bra, tank top/shirt, arm sleeves, headband/hat/visor, hair clips}

2. Before and After – your other outfit

What are you going to wear before the race?  Throwaway clothes or stash them at the bag drop?  After the race are you going to need warm layers, a dry towel, flip flops?

Now is a good time to check the weather and think about how far you will be at the finish from your hotel.  If it’s a winter race and you have a trek, you better have some warm, dry, comfortable clothes to put on (think sweats, sweatshirts, UGG boots, not your one-piece denim tuxedo).

Good:

008 (800x650)

{Sweatpants, sweatshirt and compression gear as known as Friday Night Date Night apparel}

Bad:

britney-spears-denim

{denim on denim on rhinestones on denim on denim}

3. Wires and crap – your electronics

It’s a big mental drag to toe the line and find a dead Garmin, ipod or fax machine so bring your chargers for all your electronics:

*your GPS watch, heart rate monitor + charger

*your ipod or eight track player + charger

I mean, how else are you going to listen to 4 hours of Nickelback?

Seriously, 14 carats?!  What am I doing wrong with my life that his music buys her 14 carats?

*your phone + charger

*your camera + charger

(If you’re one of the few people who still use an actual camera and not a phone)

*your laptop + charger

Because let’s be honest, if you don’t blog about it, it didn’t happen.

*any other electronics you plan on using + you guessed it, the charger

011 (800x438)

{I don’t even own a functioning ipod at the moment, but I’m positive I’ll stop breathing if I forget my Garmin}

4. Coffee and carbs – your food

What are you going to eat before the race?  Do you have a standard pre-race breakfast and if so, you better bring it with you.  Playing intestinal roulette isn’t as fun when your only hope is a heavily used portapotty destroyed by 5,000 other anxious poopers.

Can your stomach only handle a certain brand of energy drink or gel?  If so, you better bring your own.  Some courses provide plenty of energy gels and some don’t provide any so check out the race website beforehand.

Will there be coffee in your hotel before the race or do you need to bring instant packets?

070

{I do not run without coffee.  I don’t even know if it’s humanly possible.  Beth is a robot, I just know it.  A very fit one but not human}

Traveling snacks are crucial because no one likes a bitter, angry anonymous commenter travel buddy so don’t forget some portable travel foods and drinks.

For me, I always bring a couple gels, a couple packets of Starbucks VIA instant coffee, a packet of CLICK protein drink, and a couple energy bars, usually a Picky Bar for pre-race food.  And then I bring lots of travel snacks like nuts, protein bars, and gummy candy.

foods

5. Miscellaneous – your other junk

Finally pack all the random odds and ends that you like to have before, during or after a long run.  I’m pretty low key on stuff I need but some things you might want to remember:

{sunscreen, lip balm, muscle cream like Ben Gay, any medications or over the counter pain meds, hair accessories, a SPIbelt, travel ice packs, BodyGlide or anti-chafe cream, extra safety pins, any race paperwork you need, TP}

If you like a nice, tidy list here’s a great comprehensive packing list.

Anything else I’m forgetting?

Where are you traveling for your next destination race?

I really want to do a destination race, but I’m afraid of the packing (seriously, it’s an issue for me). Before a race I need everything to be just right, and if I couldn’t get ready at my house I’d be scared I forget something big! Your list covers everything so maybe I can do it! :)

Wen September 10, 2012 at 8:16 pm

You can totally do it – 95% of it is mental.

Remember if you forget something and just CAN’T live without it, in the majority of cases a store is near by to help out – not the cheapest way to go about it, but it has helped me relax.

After the invisible man (the required/must haves) & electronics process the rest is easily got on location.

Good luck!

Cate September 11, 2012 at 6:30 am

Exactly! Unless you’re traveling to some remote location, chances are if you’ve forgotten something, you can buy it. When I travel for a race, I always have my running shoes with me in my carry on. Those are most important to me. I can always get a pair of pants or a tee (who cares about chafing?!) but tour shoes are already broken in!

I’m headed to Philly on Saturday for the RnR half.

I am going to Chicago for the full flying home wednesday and thursday am flying out to San Fran for the Nike womens half. I am very thankful for your list–I am usually pretty good at packing but i always find added advice helpful–i tend to forget hair accessories and when you mentioned that I remembered I bought a Chicago 26.2 headband back in FEBRUARY!! :) must go find!

I totally agree with all you have said – I bring/do a few more things
* Advil, Excederine and any other pain reliever of choice
* I take home jelly packets from restaurants (or buy them from small bakeries) + individual packets of Peanut Butter + 2 slices of bread and instance protein packed snack
* I run with gum so my gum is a must
* Coppertone Sport Pro Series Sunblock (requires bag check) – this is the best and doesn’t encourage sweat
* I hate the chips that go around your ankle and I stole this idea a few years ago – take an arm sweatband and put it on your ankle THEN put on the ankle chip – its a no slip chip now (i always have one in my bag just incase)
* scope out a starbucks close by start or hotel for coffee (if you aren’t a drip coffee)
* Check out your hotel and see if they will hold your key and ID so all you need to do is show them your bib and they will validate your ID
* find a grocery store close to your hotel so if you forget ANYTHING or it explodes in flight you can replace.

I have done a few must fly to races and a few can drive – either way I have found my list and/or to do’s once I get there is the same.

seems i need to start packing underwear first. i was out of town over the weekend and realized after i left home that i forgot to pack underwear. i had to make an emergency target run :) luckily i was going to a friends house, so i had access to a washer.

I always remember my camera charger and Garmin charger… and forget my phone charger.

I always make sure to pack several options for the race day outfit….especially if you’re going to somewhere where the weather is unpredictable! I did a half marathon in Prague last year (it was awesome!) but the previous years the temps were always in the 40-50s, but that year it ended up being almost 80 degrees! So many people showed up with long sleeves and long pants and were dropping like flies. I was so happy that at the last minute I had thrown in a tank top.

Next destination race for me – Little Rock half marathon in March (unless I sign up for another one before then!)

One tip – save that packing list! Either online or in a paper – every time I go away, I print that list and check off items. Hmm…was in Songkhla and Hat Yai (south Thailand) just last month…so staying put for now. Maybe a trip to Singapore in Nov, Cambodia and Thailand (north) in Dec and Myanmar in Jan. Who knows?!?!?! It all depends if I can get cheap tickets.

checck it out here: http://spibelt.com/ its basically a stretchy belt you wear that can fit all your junk without bouncing around.

I am only going from one side of town to the other. But I would make sure to pack my pre-race food. You don’t want to screw up a race by eating something different that morning.

The closest I will get to a destination race is NYCM, it’s only a little over two hours away, so I’m not sure if I can call it a destination. But, I get to pay $500+ for a hotel for the night, so I might as well call it a destination!!:) I’m terrible with running a race and not having everything PERFECTLY set up the way I like it. NYC will totally challenge my sanity in that way, but I’m going to be flexible!

I love this! I’m definitely an over anxious packer. I always end up packing more than I need, but some how I always forget one important thing…like a charger! Haha

deirdre @ Oh Well Whatever September 11, 2012 at 7:47 am

Good list, very helpful. No destinations races coming for me except for that hospital bag I will be packing in March…

I must say when I did the Catalina marathon I was very nervous about forgetting something and overpacked a lot. But I had everything I needed!

Happier Heather September 11, 2012 at 7:49 am

Considering I practically live out of a suitcase traveling between my house and my fiance’s house, I have no anxiety about packing. I simply make a list about two days before a trip and methodically pack the day before.

another thing to add is your Road ID if you always run with one. You’d hate to be far from home running and not have it on!

Great list – bookmarked now for future reference :)

My next destination race is Disney’s Wine and Dine Half in November. I’ve never done a nighttime race – at this point I’m more worried about fueling and whatnot since my friends will have cars there and I can always hit a store if I forget something.

I always bring a plan B racing outfit because you never know when you boyfriend decides to accidently dump a glass of wine on your perfectly planned outfit.

Also extra socks… socks are great!

I was told to bring a large garbage bag to wear in case it rains. I didn’t take this advice for one really rainy event that I raced, because it was a “date” race, and I wanted to look cute and not trashy (no pun intended).

I ended up looking like a drown rat in a wet tshirt contest. Not sure that was a better look than the bag, but whatevs.

My absolute best race packing tip is to bring a pair of rubber gloves – like doctor’s gloves (you can buy packs of 2 or 3 pairs for $1 at a drug store, although I take them home from work myself). If it’s slightly chilly at the race start the gloves will keep you quite warm (they aren’t breathable, so your whole body will heat up), and you can easily throw them out on the course as you start to warm up. I’ve started many a marathon in drug dealer gloves!

I try to work races in when we are already traveling, but I need to do better with the whole meal planning thing. The first time I (totally accidentally) BQ’d we stayed at a friends house and the night before dinner was hot chicken wings and Malbec at a neighbor’s party! I was so dehydrated all night. Then it was a 1.5 hour drive to the race and back, so after the marathon I jumped right in the car. Well, I didn’t make plans for lunch and we got back after our hosts had eaten already, so I ran a marathon then didn’t eat a bite until dinner at 8:30 pm. Oh my gosh I was so starving.

Reply

SkinnyRunner September 12, 2012 at 9:31 am

that sounds like the worst day ever. except the accidental BQ, that sounds awesome.

I’m leaving for the Maui half in like 45 hours! I thought my electronic plus charger collection was laughable but it looks like it may be the norm for us runners to have to have that many “accessories” when we travel.

I don’t need pants in Maui right? Cause I definitely didnt pack any of those,

I just did the Hana Relay in Maui with five of my (now) closest friends! I highly recommend this relay race. Most fun I have ever had racing! Maui rocks if you are a runner… or a normal human too I guess!

I am from Honolulu, so I was a little cold in the morning during the first part of the run (spoiled I know). But most likely you will be just fine without running pants.
