Magazine Madness: healthy tips

WORKOUT -

Ran on TM -

15.5 miles/2:10

1.o incline

Walked outside -

3.75 miles

I got up again early today but went to the gym to treadmill it.

I had planned on doing 10 on the TM and then doing 5ish outside, but once you’re watching news for 85 minutes straight, what’s another few miles?

So I finished up the run on the treadmill, but man, I wasn’t feeling it today.  I was a little sore from yesterday’s class and just felt all around slow.

016 (358x800)

An hour after I finished at the gym I met my friend Katie for a walk.  We did 3.75 miles in about 64 minutes while talking about all the important subjects, mainly ourselves.

2012-09-08_1301

We walked it out, talked it out and then I hit up the grocery store because we didn’t have any food in our house.  My husband will not buy any groceries beyond what he wants to eat this very second.  On a side note, he’s really great at planning for the future.

I wanted a salad even though it was only 10:30am so I bought the greatest salad topper in the world:

018 (800x448)

I put the vlasic ovals on my salads and wanted to try out the NSA vlasic bread & butter pickles since I had never seen them before.

They’re decent – they do taste a little different (they’re sweetened with Splenda instead of sugar) but aren’t bad.  I think I liked them… meaning I only ate half the jar already.

Don’t be a cheapwad like me and buy the off brand dill pickles to save .50.  not worth it.  Go big or go pickle-less.

HIGH HEELS FOR ONE HOUR A DAY?

You know my neighbor gives me tons of her magazines, like so many magazines that I never even knew existed.  I give some to my mom and then I read some too, but I should check if the local library would want any.

Anyways, I was reading this Health issue last night as we were watching our 5th consecutive hour of ESPN (heaven forbid we miss one highlight of any sport playing around the world) and I snapped a couple pics of some healthy tidbits.

Obviously I’m dealing with some serious devastation about the high heels…

Is there anything you always buy low-fat?  Full fat?

I buy fat-free yogurt and milk and some light cheeses for Jaybob.  I’ve been searching for the calorie-free cream cheese but can’t find it anywhere.

I’m a big fan of full fat stuff, mostly because it’s hard to find reduced fat options that don’t replace that flavor and/or composition with chemicals. A couple exceptions to that are my Chobanis, cottage cheese, and the occasional cheese. I feel better eating all-natural, full-fat food, and it encourages me to eat a little less of them and more of veggies, grain, and chicken/turkey.

I always buy skim milk, low fat yogurt & certain low fat salad dressing…the rest I just stick to full fat! YOLO (cool kids say that, right?)

I used to buy fat-free everything but then I realized they replace most of the fat w/chemicals and/or (fake) sugar. Now I buy full fat cottage cheese and fat free plain yogurt/plain greek yogurt–but add almonds to keep me full. I try to limit my dairy fats and try to eat more healthy fats such as almond butter and salmon.

you are making me want pickles so bad right now. Wish I could join your walks with Katie. Why does this state have to be so huge and make it so we are still so far from you? Always full fat ice cream and Billy switched me over to 2% milk after we got married.

I don’t buy anything that has been altered to make it lower in fat – like reduced fat peanut butter. Usually those products have extra sugar or thickening agents and they just don’t taste good. I have no problem with buying dairy products that are naturally lower in fat, like skim milk or a hard cheese. but I do prefer yogurt with some fat in it or else it just doesn’t fill me up. Actually it took me a long time to realize that fat is my friend. If there isn’t enough fat in my lunch, by the end of my 9-hour work day I’m completely famished and will buy a candy bar out of a vending machine before I faint. Once I started packing a higher-fat lunch I stay full. I’m just not one of those people who can subsist on carbs or low-calorie proteins. It backfires and I pig out on junk when my blood sugar crashes!

My mouth is WATERING just looking at those jars of pickles. Thanks a lot for the extra drool. However, I don’t get the sugar added to pickle concept. I like my sour foods to just be sour. Except sour candy. Wow, did I just contradict myself???

I buy fat free greek yogurt. I don’t buy as much milk anymore, and I hate cheese, period. Back in my poor ($$) college days, I used to buy whole milk and dilute it 1 part milk and 1 part water. It ends up tasting like 1% milk. Unfortunately, it also has half the nutrients that way. What can I say, I had to make it work.

I’ll buy reduced fat cream cheese, sour cream and yogurt, but that’s pretty much it. Real is the way to go with everything else!

I always buy milk non-fat as well as whipped cream (regular seems too thick for me). I buy most other than full fat though. Go big or go home right? :)

I used to buy low fat everrything, until I heard that the “low fat” options are actually worse than the full fat products these days. (you never know what to believe). Anyway, nowadays i’m a full fat kinda gal ;-)

I go with fatfree greek yogurt so good. Skim milk, only local (farm is about 6 miles away) everything else regular fat or low fat.
I haven’t found a good ff cream cheese

These are a pretty good low-fat cream cheese. I haven’t tried the original though, just the garden veggie.

Fat is where it’s at! Low-fat and fat-free are full of sugar and chemicals, they just leaving you hungry. I don’t know how you can eat a plate of vegetables with a couple of beans on top for breakfast and run 15+ miles… My BFF does stuff like this and she has eating disorders and OCD :/

Reply

SkinnyRunner September 9, 2012 at 12:13 pm

i can probably eat like that cause im awesome’ that’d would be my best guess.

sorry to hear about your bff. eating disorders and OCD arent issues ive personally dealt with but i can imagine they’re very difficult to overcome and heal from.

I usually buy skim milk, buy low fat mozzarella and waver between full fat and low fat options. If I’m making something decadent, I tend to use reduced fat items like cream cheese so it isn’t AS bad for me. I’ve learned that fat free items are crap usually and not good for you and there is a huge lack of taste. Rather work a little harder and enjoy the fattiness in foods.

Full fat always. I spent far too many wasted, dumb (read:college) years eating “healthy” (read:fat free, sugar-laden, processed junk). Well I was always hungry, my body looked weak, and I was weak! Since I’ve finally gained insight into nutrition my diet and body have completely changed for the better. My I’m now a nutritionist and teacher and tell all my clients/students to choose sugar free over fat free at all times. Good post—oh and that shoe info was also interesting.

fat free choc milk, fat free cottage cheese and yogurt most of the time. I actually like the fat free cream cheese, maybe because I love sodium ;) I try to look at labels and make sure it isnt being replaced with crappy stuff (sugar, salt) and more calories. I love the no added sugar bread and buttas. I am trying to be more cognizant that fat free isnt always better, most of the time not better, but lost 60-70 lbs on a low fat diet, feeling full the whole time (and eating carbs-but low fat), have kept it off…am running a marathon in a month and still eat a low fat diet. Hell I even eat those fat free chips every once in awhile to satisfy a craving for chips. ;( And no I dont have diarrhea.

I buy/eat as organically as I can or rather what my paychecks allow me, most times, these are all full fat versions. I prefer these to the reduced/low fat stuff where the fats have been substituted with sugar, additives etc

I buy low fat milk and yogurt. I also always buy the Trop 50 for OJ. I am so jealous of your running skills! Were you always pretty fast or did you vastly improve as you started being consistent about running? I am going to have a lot more time to dedicate to running over the next year so I am hoping I can have some serious improvements in my times.

i think ive always been athletic and running comes easy to me, but i also put in a lot of time and do the runs where you just “make it hurt” to get faster.

I don’t buy a whole lot of processed foods, but when I do, I try to go with the full fat versions (I just accidentally sounded way too much like the dos equis man), by the way. I eat a TON of peanut butter and usually go with the off-brand natural versions. Otherwise I try to get most of my fats from nuts like almonds, peanuts, walnuts, etc…or avocados (my newest obsession).

I really admire you for running 15 miles on the treadmill! The most I’ve done on the tm was 8 miles, and I just couldn’t do one more second!

The bad part about it is, I read these same facts about healthy snacking all the time, but I never actually put them into daily use. I just buy the same old crap every time. It just seems like these things never keep me full.

Oh, and I found your calorie-free cream cheese. Right next to my calorie-free soft baked cookies, on aisle doesn’t exist.

Good to know about carrots, since I eat 5 lbs a week. Seriously, the 5lb bag from Costco. Each week. And peanut butter!

I just bought that dark choc pb Kind bar but haven’t tried it yet.

I buy skim milk but besides that I don’t intentionally buy too much low fat stuff unless a recipe I’m using calls for it. I’m a rule follower like that. I’d rather have less of the full fat stuff than a bunch of low fat stuff that doesn’t taste the way it’s supposed to. Explains a lot about the state of my thighs though…

Elizabeth September 9, 2012 at 10:54 am

Full fat!! I get my milk right out of the bulk tank and also use that to make all of my yogurt, so it’s full fat too. I’m not too picky about my cheeses, usually just get whatever is on sale.

jessica@momtomarathon September 9, 2012 at 11:51 am

I buy a lot of stuff low fat or fat free. My husband and children get on to me for that. I must use the light or fat free versions of salad dressings or else I would have all my fat calories in on sitting and I don’t even notice a difference in taste.

I chuckled at the mention of a face plant into fondue–sounds like a rocking good time!
I’m usually a fan of full fat options with dairy, especially milk and sour cream. I love the ingredient list on Daisy sour cream–cultured cream only. All the other brands make it far more complicated than it needs to be.

I just remembered you did a review on the new Garmin and I had a question. Would the Garmin work for the sole purpose of knowing how many calories you burn during a workout class? I guess I don’t know how that would work if it’s not actually recording a “distance”..

you’d need a heart rate monitor i think to see how high your heart rate is.

I used to buy 0% yogurt all the time, but after switching to 2% I simply can’t go back. Its so much more delicious and I feel satisfied from way less of the stuff. Which surprised me.
I’m still able to rock out my heels for my shifts at restaurant, I’m hoping that doesn’t fade soon because I don’t think I’ll be able to work in flats now, makes me sad thinking about that.

Liana@RunToMunch September 9, 2012 at 6:56 pm

I buy cheese full fat because I figure for 10 extra calculators I rather have less processing. I buy greek yogurt 2% because I think it tastes better, 0% is a little too eh for me. I eat it plain so I prefer is creamier. I buy full fat peanut butter (natural, not processed) because I’m an addict and it tastes good.

I buy skim milk, it lasts longer.

Kari @ Running Ricig September 10, 2012 at 5:05 am

I generally go full fat for everything other than milk (because i just can’t stand the taste of anything else). I feel like it can’t be healthy to alter food to make it fat free, right?

Happier Heather September 10, 2012 at 7:18 am

I tend to buy everything full-fat because fake diet food annoys me for the most part. I’ve spent entirely too much time eating the fake stuff and refuse to do it any longer, even if that means eating less to have more enjoyment!
