Questions from you,
answers from me.
This is how we do.
Mendy asked about my training, “Do you plan fast/long runs or do you push yourself for pace or distance based on how you feel for that day?”
I don’t follow a training plan and actually never have so I don’t plan any runs out unless I’m on a really tight schedule to get in marathon shape for an upcoming marathon. Then I’ll be more conscious of doing long runs so I don’t die in the race.
But generally I just try to keep in mind what I’ve been doing lately… have I run fast in the past week or so? Have I gone long at all? And then I try to get around to doing whatever I haven’t done much of. super legit training, huh?
{One of Aron’s training plans}
I would recommend anyone starting out to follow a training plan; heck, I’d recommend anyone follow a plan if you want to get faster. This post is about how to get faster btw.
The reasons I don’t follow a training plan:
1. I’m dumb
2. I never have and have survived thus far so I’m living on the edge and taking my chances.
3. I’m one of those (dumb) people who when are told to do something IMMEDIATELY dread it, regret it, hate it, don’t want to do it. And I really don’t want to turn running into that sort of thing.
4. I don’t ever want to take running too seriously so having a more relaxed approach towards training helps me keep it chill.
Caren asked if I do any sort of strength training to supplement my running…
I’m really bad at it and need to take classes to keep myself accountable which is why Friday I’m going to a strength training/cardio class with Sheila.
But I don’t follow any sort of routine. I should, though. Strength training is so good for you and there are tons of health benefits from it.
Allison asked where these jeans are from…
They are J Brand bought from Revolve Clothing. I think these are the same ones and are on sale right now. These are some of my favorite jeans – they’re tight but really comfortable.
I usually buy my jeans at Nordstrom Rack, but I’ve bought everything from expensive, full-priced designer jeans to $10.50 Forever21 jeans to a couple pairs off ebay for $30, and I’ve learned that fit is everything. You gotta feel good in them regardless of the style, brand, color, trend.
Angela asked if it bothers me when I get yelled at or whistled at while running…
Generally it doesn’t bother me, I just try to take it as a compliment. But yes, sometimes you get that defensive, all up in arms feeling at dudes who catcall, but it’s one of those things where the only thing you can change is your attitude and your response so you might as well chalk it up as a compliment.
Thanks for all the questions!

Fun post!
You’re so lucky that you don’t have to follow a specific running plan and still be incredibly fast! If I were like you, I probably wouldn’t make a structured workout plan either. It would be (like you said) a fast one, a long one, and just relaxed ones in between.
I love those skinny jeans. Thx for posting the link
When I met up with you, you were different than what I was expecting. You were definitely fun and easy to talk to.
being catcalled isn’t a compliment at all. it’s disgusting and misogynistic.
what are you gonna do about it? get all upset and bent out of shape and let it ruin your day?
no thanks, my life’s too short for that.
I’m with ya there, I don’t see what all the fuss is about myself. Don’t sweat the small stuff! Take it as a compliment people seriously! lol
Mostly I just flip off catcallers. It is the only way I can say “this is not okay.” Amazing how quickly it changes them from “hey baby come with me” to “you’re an ugly bitch.”
I’m with you in not wanting to follow a training plan…especially with reason #3. I do what I want when I want. In any given day, it might be 3 miles or 20+. Sometimes I plan for 5 and towards the end of the run I’ll think “do one more mile” and I end up doing 15. It just depends on my mood.
Ok, now about the shoes in that pic with the J Brand jeans. Where did you get those? They are adorable.
they’re yves saint laurent from neiman marcus, one of my ridic overpriced splurge shoes.
Hubs and I are the same way. It’s either “babe” or “buttface”. Sarcastic relationships are fun. Thanks for the Q&A.
I just have to say I love your Texas Tech shirt, Wreck ‘em!!
my husband (who went to tech) says he loves you.
Haha. Yep, my husband never reads my blog either. But I rarely make fun of him–we’re more lovey dovey than sarcastic to each other, actually. Love that about him!
I like those jeans too!
Methinks if we keep up Friday mornings we should have a giant blogging arm wrestling tournament to showcase our massive muscles.
I love that you do not follow a specific training plan and are proof that you can be a kick-ass runner with that mentality! Running for me is fun and a hobby. I’m not fast, I’m never going to win things so why should I train like that? My method still seems to be working at improving myself one step at a time!
I don’t think my husband has ever looked at my blog. Doesn’t bother me, just for fun and not super important.
I have never followed a strict training plan, just if a I do have a race start running longer on the weekends and hope for the best. But I have also never gotten faster or better. Huh?
Thanks for the cute post…love when bloggers share just to share. And I really enjoy your blog. Good stuff!
I have a question. What is your favorite running magazine? I have looked at getting a subscription to Running Times or Runners World but can’t decide between the two.
ive only read runners world so i cant say anything about running times.
I prefer running times over runner’s world. Running times is more about athletes and more technically running while running world focuses to much on weight lose lately and is becoming just another Shape magazine
It’s funny but I’m not a training plan person either. As soon as I try to put a plan together and go “today is my 13 mile tempo run” my legs turn into anchors and refuse to move.
Whenever I get a catcall or a yell from a driver, I just secretly pretend they will eventually crash into a pole and feel better and move on.
I have a question for you…. can we be BFFs?
You are hilarious and I love your attitude about not taking running too seriously….yet you are still a runner beast! (That’s a compliment.)
sure we can be bffs… i dont have many standards really.
score. i like my BFFs easy.
Thanks bunches! You’ve mentioned not having a plan before but I can kinda see a pattern from your distances and times. The training plans are great but I notice how some days are AW-ESOME and others are AW-FUL. Your less-rigid approach accounts for the difference but it’s still clear you have an overall goal.
I love your initiative to push. I’ve only recently tapped into that push. And now I hate/crave it. Super weird, super wicked and super woohoo, all at once. : )
I just started running last December and have completed 2 half marathons this year and I am training for my first full that will be in January. It amazes me to see how many miles you do a day! It really motivates me to push myself.
As far as training goes, I am am hoping to be able to run more distance before I take a walking break.
I actually get nervous and scared when I get catcalls. It upsets me that in some ways my avoidance of those situations changes what I wear when running and the routes I run.
My husband said I’ll miss the catcalls when one day they don’t come anymore haha.
Wait, people get catcalled when they run? Dang gym. I have got to start running on the streets more.
“Poopy face” is a great significant other nickname. I also think of catcalls as compliments, although last weekend a bunch of drunk guys (I was in a huge D1 football town) were screaming from a balcony “you with the tits, you’re walking the wrong way” as I walked past them, that was not nice … although still a compliment??
What size foam roller and density do you use? I consulted my chiropractor and she said
To check with you since I run ( a little compared to you, but I’m 40). I love your blog
I have the exact same Joe’s jeans and they are AWESOME. MY absolute fave! Also, wanted to tell you your new pics look nice on your blog header!!!!!
thank you
I never had, don;t have or think I’ll have a running plan! Every one of your point resonates with me. Which is odd then because I have a strength training plan – I get in a 3-4 days/week sessions with one for each muscle group (Back & Lats; Chest & Pecs, Legs; Shoulders, Delts & Arms).
And jeans have to fit and flatter you – no matter how cheap or expensive it is.
your #3 hit home with me- just the words i was looking for to explain why i just cant stick to a plan. (i try sometimes, i know they can be great! but oh how the structure just weighs me down.)
Wait, what?! You have a life outside the blog that you don’t share with us?!?! How can that be??
