Three feet of sugar

WORKOUT -

Ran outside in Astoria

15.0 miles/2:03 total

7 miles/60 mins with Elmer the doofy dog

8.0 miles/63 mins

I’m usually pretty good about getting workouts in on vacation because I feel so much better afterwards that it’s an easy, no brainer decision for me.

But I rarely do long runs while I’m away; I just don’t want to spend the extra time going long so I do about an hour, 7-8 miles.  It’s not a huge time commitment, but I can still get my sweat on.

But today I had some extra time this morning so I took Elmer out for 7 miles, dropped him off at the house and then did 8 more on my own.

Do you exercise on vacation and keep up your regular routine or take a vacation from working out when on vacation?

I always wonder when I see people at hotel/resort gyms if they’re there because they’re committed to exercising no matter what, or if they’re just enjoying the nice gym the hotel offers and it’s vacation so why not?

Either way they’re getting their sweat on so good for them.

{The gym at the Boston Seaport hotel that was super nice and had Woodway treadmills.}

This morning I was being a pro at post-run recovery until I saw these in my parents’ bedroom.  Yes, my dad keeps Christmas candy in their room.  don’t ask.

So I ate a yard.  I feel like this sort of thing would make Janae’s day, no?

Speaking of candy, Forbes has a list of the healthiest ones around and the winner is Borba Skin Balance Confections.  I’ve never heard of it.

Other candies that made the list are CocoaVia bars, Detour protein bar, Figamajigs and Hershey’s sugar-free snacks.  basically things you have never heard of or buy.

I have bought the sugar-free Reese’s Peanut Butter Cups for Jaymo once before at Walmart, and they do taste different, but for 180 calories you get 5 of them and it’s more fun than a bowl of broccoli.

My knees hurt just thinking about it! Seriously, do your knees ever hurt? I just turned 88 , I mean 36, and things are getting crackier and creakier all.the.time!! I feel like you are superhuman!

I love the seaport hotel. I love boston–it is my hometown! I have never heard of sugar free reese’s. i must try these… I do exercise when on vacation–and like you more of a maintenance routine, rarely long runs. glad to see you indulged in some candy–and I am not the only committed runner that sometimes indulges!! :)

Yes! I am taking my son on a cruise for his birthday, but it just so happens to be the week before my half, so I will take advantage of the track on the top of the ship.
I never knew about the Sugar Free Reese’s Cups. Reese’s Cups are my weakness! As a Type 1 diabetic, I have to measure my carbs, and this actually has more carbs than the regular ones. Looks like the sweetness comes from sugar alcohols which can have some embarrassing (gassy) consequences. :)

I like to exercise on vacations. It’s another great way to explore the area I’m visiting. I’ve never done an extensive workout, like a long run, but I’m not opposed. Wait. I take that back. Did 9 miles over Thanksgiving in Florida. It stunk. Unless you are on the beach, Florida makes for BORING running.

I don’t eat sugar free candy just on principal. Without sugar can it really be called candy? Love your blog, so excited to have found it! All your races inspire me!

Maybe it’s just me but that Sugar Free candy does a number on my gut…it’s NOOOOO good! The candy is good but it makes me feel (as smell ;) horrible. TMI, I know but I just thought people out there needed to be warned!!! I LOVE working out on vacation, it drives my husband crazy but I don’t really care :)

i was going to say the same thing. i cannot eat that sugar free stuff. makes me so sick and i get horrible gas from it too. gimme the real stuff any day. the artificial sweeteners rip my tummy up!

I tried working out on the cruise i went on last year but all the working out in the world could not off set the disgusting amount of food i ate. ughhhhh. never again.

Ha! Yard o’ licorice. Nice.
I do great if we stay at a hotel. I will go run at their gym even if it is super sketch. Staying with family/friends is another story. I think it must be directly related to the amount of beer drank when staying at a friends place vs the amount drank when you have to drive yourself back to the hotel.

Maltitol! Say no to Maltitol…it is in almost all sugar free candies (definitely the Hershey’s brand, I think in the Detour bars too) and they will make you fart methane. No joke. It’s miserable. If everyone ate sugar free, global warming would arrive at a much more rapid pace….and the world would smell awful.

I’ll take the 3-yard licorice. Even though it was probably supposed to be eaten in December 2011….

We just got back from NYC and I ran while we were there: mileage was kind of planned, but mostly did what I ‘felt like’ doing so I could see the city. I didn’t stick to my half marathon plan, but got runs and workouts in. ((shrug) and ate a LOT

It depends on what the vacation is, if its my family’s house then ya I’ll get runs in, might as well since I have extra people to help with the kids. If its camping I don’t normally, but I am never opposed to a run!

I think “healthy candy” is an oxymoron. If I’m going to eat candy I go all the way with the most unhealthy option available.

I don’t know how you run so much! I hate running, until I’m doing it, I want to love it I swear, much like I want to love yoga, I don’t not even when i do it, it makes my tummy upset. But I read your blog everyday and am AMAZED by you and Mama Laughlin too. I want to be like you both but I don’t know how to be motivated for it. I spin 4 times a week and 3 others I want to do weights and run 2-3 miles a day. Any how, you inspire me!

But yeah sugar free candy is like caffeine free coffee, why bother! lol! That is my feeling and if could eat just one piece of candy i’d do it but i can’t because i have a giant piggy pie hole!

I always try to run when I’m on vacation but generally the hotel gyms always end up have 2 treadmills of no use- one broken, – one with a sweaty guy power walking while reading the WSJ. Lately I’ve been combining races with vacation so I’m either tapering or recovering and don’t run other than the race.

well, i don’t really ever take vacations le sigh. but when i’m on the road for work i try my darndest to fit in a run/yoga/crossfit workout.

like this weekend i googled the nearest crossfit gym and am going to go there 6am friday. saturday i’ll run in the hotel gym. and if i’m extra amazing fantastic i’ll try to make myself do yoga on sunday morning before the flight home. we’lllll see :)

just wish i had a dog to borrow for running like you did today!

NOT a fan of the sugar free candy! It tastes like dry chemicals and, as some have pointed out, is not exactly easy on the GI tract.
I have definitely skipped a normal run while traveling to use a fancy gym, and sometimes I skip exercise altogether when I travel. It depends on who my host is. Some people are more welcoming of your habit; others have security alarms on at night and don’t do coffee in the morning, etc.

Wow, you are a beast! I wish I can do that much in an hour.

I try to exercise on vacation, but honestly, it doesn’t really happen.

Running on vacation is always so hard for me… I usually make it out the door the first day or 2 but after that the vacation “mindset” hits and I just want to relax and sleep in!

I always bring my running shoes with me on vacation but I rarely ever go out running (except when I’m visiting my parents… which isn’t really a vacation). I find that it is difficult to go when no one I’m usually with runs or works out.

I love to workout on vacation because I have the extra time and usually don’t have to wake up long before dawn to get it in.

I love working out on vacation! In June my dad’s side of the family went to Top Sail Island, N.C. and we literally hung out on the beach all day long. I tend to be an early riser so my sister and I would head out for a run before everyone hit the beach! I just really struggle with hanging around all day so I gotta get my energy out somehow!

Hi SR! Your comment about hotel gyms makes me feel very pathetic :( i am from Berlin, Germany (as you may remember) and I am currently travelling the US with my boyfriend. We are driving all the way from NYC to LA by car. All the Time spent in the car is great, because we love driving but it also drives me Crazy at times because I need to move! So i use the hotel gym a lot to run on the treadmill because man, your country is made for cars! Along the Interstates you can’t find a route to Run without getting Run over. So I am glad whenever We have a gym at the Hotel so I can at least run a bit and then get back into the carseat. It may be pathetic :(

SkinnyRunner September 5, 2012 at 7:58 pm

nothing pathetic about that, girl! being committed to exercise no matter how or where you do it is great.

Finally!! We are in Boulder, CO and a ran outside!! Yay! All the way along the Boulder Creek, 6 miles :) but oxygen and dehydration hit on me in the mountains. But Finally no motel gym along the interstate! :)

I love to run wherever, whenever especially on vaca however just recently used THE worst treadmill ever @ a small hotel in Alabama on the way to Destin, FL. Maybe would have been safer to run unfamiliar streets!!

Reply

krista September 6, 2012 at 6:25 am

OK I find it fascinating that I was about to post about how my sis and I ran most mornings on our vacation to Destin a few weeks ago, and there’s another Krista who did the same in Destin recently. Yes I’m easily amused!

I was so excited when SF candy came out…until I thought I was going to DIE after eating half a bag with the stomach pains the rest of the day.

I try to run with my dog but she gets super invested in a scent she picks up and is too stubborn to let me just run!

If I get lucky enough to trick someone into babysitting my kids, I’m all about working out on vacation. New scenery, and it’s almost guaranteed to not be as humid as my hometown (Birmingham). High fives all around for working out on vacation.

Yup, I do it all the time – run, elliptical cross trainer or bike (if there’s a gym), swim or yoga but like you, short sweat out session. I always feel better if I do something and typically it’s early in the morning before everyone is awake and things get going. Heck, I even put in a quick 20-30 min run before my morning flights! I also check out/google for gyms nearby my vacation before leaving.

Natalie September 6, 2012 at 2:41 am

The only vacation I run during is our annual trip to Florida. I go every morning for 40 mins around the neighbourhood . I live in Britain and love running in a totally different setting for 3 weeks every year. I buy new sneakers as soon as I get the chance to get to a mall. Always Nike lunerglide. The running is also a necessity in USA to prevent vacation weight gain. Cant resist Cheetos and Oreo cakesters. Love reading your blog btw. Inspires me when I’m feeling lazy.

Leah September 6, 2012 at 4:07 am

On vacation I will go to the gym for atleast thirty minutes half of the days (if there is a gym) and I always tear out those quick workouts from magazines and bring a couple so I can do something quick in the room.

Kari @ Running Ricig September 6, 2012 at 5:03 am

I wish I had a dog that could run 7 miles at that pace with me. Bungee refuses to run at a normal pace unless I’m rollerblading. She is clearly insane.

I usually exercise on vacation, but I’m a little more lax about it than I am at home.

Easa September 6, 2012 at 6:01 am

I want to run on a Woodway!

When work typically gets in the way of working out (which is the story of my life) vacation’s #1 purpose is to work out. I typically overindulge but that’s OK because I can always be trashed when I get back to work.

Robin September 6, 2012 at 6:14 am

When I go on vacation down south to a resort, I do not run. I take the week off completely. I find that the rest for me is more beneficial then the workouts. On local vacations sometimes I run, sometimes I don’t, usually dependent upon childcare.

Carolyn September 6, 2012 at 6:17 am

If you see me at a hotel gym, I’m probably there for work. I tend to travel either alone, or with minimal people, so going to the gym is no biggie. I love running on the road if there’s someone to keep me company, or if a lot of people are out.

I love to work out..I try to do it as much as possible. If its just my hubby and I staying in a hotel that has a gym..then I HAVE to take advantage of it (b/c deep down I’m thinking I paid to be here why not?). But if I’m on vacay with a big group (college friends or family) then I tend to not do so much because I rarely see them and want to spend as much time with them as possible. PS Love the new pictures (have been MIA from your blog for a few days).

I am weird and love working out on vacation. I love that it’s different than my normal routine and that I don’t have anywhere to be so I can take my sweet time! It also helps with eating all the less than stellar food that I do on vacay! :)

I always keep my workout routine when I’m on vacation or traveling for work. Right after I check-in to the hotel and unpack, I head out to the gym or out for a run if I’ve preplanned a route. I feel like the time in the car/plane makes it necessary for me to stretch my legs!
