Hipster Face Off

by SkinnyRunner on August 15, 2012

WORKOUT -

Piloxing class -

6o mins

Ran outside -

10.25 miles/1:29

slower, easier miles

I took Bri’s 6am Piloxing class and it was a fun sweatfest.  I really like the jumping around cardio part as well as the barre/Pilates movements.  It’s a good totally different from running workout.

008 (452x800)

But you know my first love is celebrity gossip.  And my second love is running so I ran 10 easy miles after Piloxing.  My legs were burnt out  tired so the first 5 miles were around 9:00 pace and the second 5 were closer to 8:30s.

SOCKS VS SLEEVES: READER QUESTION

Hanna just emailed me asking about compression socks versus sleeves and which I prefer.  Great timing because I just got my first pair of Pro Compression sleeves.

ee

I think it all comes down to personal choice – both work well so use whichever you prefer.  (I personally like compression socks better than sleeves, but I have and wear both.)

That being said, there are some benefits to sleeves:

1. You can wear your own socks with them.

If you’re particular about your running sock, you can still use it.  Or run sockless in Vibrams, etc.  If I’m not wearing compression socks, I only run in Drymax running socks so that’s a nice benefit.

2. They’re cheaper and easier to re-wear.

Pro’s sleeves are on sale right now for $30 ($10 off) so you can get a pair for $20 less than socks.  Also, because your calves probably aren’t sweating as much as your feet, you could re-wear them more often than socks.

I can’t wear socks more than once without washing them… that funk feet thing I have going on.

3. You can change into dry socks a lot quicker.

Maybe you’re competing in a triathlon and need to change socks during a transition: it’s a lot easier to pull off a footie sock and just leave the sleeves on.  Or if you’re hiking/trail running and want to change your socks.

4. You won’t look like a tool as much when you’re recovering in them.

Super important stuff: you can wear sandals or open-toed shoes with sleeves and not look like a megaturd.

Ran 13.5 miles yesterday and then went to a meeting… while compressing:

The hus told me I was wearing them wrong, as if he knows anything about anything, so I moved the grey to the back and instantly felt so much cooler.

I’m such a hipster.

It’s hard being this cool… where’s my fedora and horn-rimmed glasses?!

OTHER STUFF YOU NEED TO KNOW ABOUT

  • Don’t forget tomorrow is the free Run Like a Girl fun run at the Laguna Hills Road Runner Sports.  You probably won’t want to come if you don’t like free stuff, women or running.

I’m drinking some right now and would show you a picture but I have a huge pimple on my nose.  not kidding.

Love the dress too! Gonna have to try some compression calves….when they go on sale of course!

I know it’s been said already, but that dress is awesome! Also, thanks for addressing this. I have been debating between getting some compression socks or sleeves. You definitely give a lot of useful information!

Thanks for the mention on OJ Marathon!

I prefer the sleeves so I can wear my own socks, hide under clothes and where flip flops – and man they feel good!

Kari @ Running Ricig August 15, 2012 at 11:27 am

I usually prefer sleeves, because they don’t feel as hot as socks do. However, I have ridiculous tendinitis in my foot right now and compression socks feel AMAZING, so I’ve switched it up for the week.

I only have compression socks but I love them! I could see sleeves being good for actual racing in the summer so that you could wear socks that are a little better for sweating/heat.

Love your dress! So pretty!

I really like socks because they help my feet and arches feel better too!

Jenn @ Run It My Way August 15, 2012 at 11:53 am

I generally prefer sleeves for a couple reasons… I have small feet but gymnast (read: crazy muscular/ rugby player-looking gronk) calves, so if socks fit my calves, they’re usually HUGE on my feet. It’s hard to get the right fit! Secondly, I often wear them to bed the night after a hard/ long run for recovery and I can’t stand wearing socks in bed – so the sleeves do the trick :) plus I spend all my money on rainbow running shorts from Lululemon so I end up buying the cheaper sleeves :D

Amy August 15, 2012 at 2:32 pm

I agree with you! I have larger calves and small feet so the sleeves work so much better! And I have short legs not only are the feet are huge but then the length is over the knee then too so sleeves are the way to go for me.

Love the dress too! Is the lace part underneath connected to the dress or a tank?

Reply

SkinnyRunner August 15, 2012 at 11:57 am

just a tank top to keep all the family jewels covered up

Reply

jmac August 15, 2012 at 12:01 pm

love it! definitely need to keep the jewels tucked in and it fancies up the outfit a little too…

Sleeves. Love the maxi dress!

You read my mind today! I was truly having this debate in my head. Your comment about switching socks during a tri did it for me, so I went right to the website to order. Bummer-sleeves not available in my size!

love that dress!
i have three pairs of comp socks…love my CEPs the best.
one consideration: socks are more helpful if you are wanting to increase circulation in the ankle area!
i am interested in trying a pair of comp sleeves to compare…

Bari August 15, 2012 at 12:32 pm

Sleeves for sure! I’m actually wearing jeans today so I can rock my sleeves while wearing sandals without looking like a megaturd.

I prefer sleeves over socks. I’m picky about my socks & don’t care for the feel of the compressions socks.

The black maxi dress is super cute!

Thanks for the official post! This really helps! I’m not finicky about my socks so I’ll stick with the full on socks for now;)

I haven’t tried sleeves yet. I want to. Love that you sported them under the dress. I may have to get some for these darn hot days. :) That dress is way too cute by the way.

I think I’d probably like the sleeves better than socks. I’ve been meaning to purchase some compression sleeves from CEP!

I have two pairs of the socks but sleeves are next!,,

I’ve been rocking compression sleeves all summer – not as easy to hide without boots. I have been flashing neon pink from under my maxi skirt all day and yesterday I just went for straight up leg warmer look with shorts. Getting lots of looks…and I’m in NYC. But well worth it, especially training for my first marathon and stupid shin splints lurking. I just got my first pair of socks which I mainly wear after long runs.

Oh, hipsters. How I loathe and yet love thee, such easy targets for jokes and judgement lol.

I haven’t actually tried compression socks or sleeves yet (I’m not that advanced or fancy yet), but I’m thinking I’m going to go with sleeves when the time comes.

Great dress by the way!

Kathy @thepandapost August 15, 2012 at 4:19 pm

It’s sleeves for me. I could never ever sleep in socks, they are like prisons for my feet. My feet need to be free. But sleeves I can sleep in :)

BethanyC August 15, 2012 at 4:46 pm

I love your blue shirt in top pix. Can I still find it somewhere? Also, I have yet to try compression socks. I’d rather compress my hips when they ache. But I do think I would prefer sleeves even though I’d look like a doof.

SkinnyRunner August 15, 2012 at 5:02 pm

its a costco tank top that i actually bought off ebay bc i cant find them at any nearby costcos. i think costco did a ripoff on lululemon but im not for sure.

I like the sleeves. I am excited that pro compression is making sleeves now.

Miri August 15, 2012 at 8:54 pm

Soooo mad at myself for buying super-expensive compression socks (ok, not that expensive). I didn’t even know sleeves were an option? Love the idea! mostly because I just like wearing my own socks better.

Sue August 15, 2012 at 10:34 pm

Sleeve although there was one time my sis absolutely refused to head out the door with me for dinner until I removed them. Hey I needed some “compression love” after a tough run in the morning.

Char August 15, 2012 at 11:34 pm

Digging the maxi dress. I think my bro-in law could give you a run for your money with pickles, he’s a freak about eating so many. I was wondering the same thing about the sleeves vs. socks, great post!

Amanda August 16, 2012 at 8:51 am

Didn’t even realize PRO made sleeves! I have 2 pairs of their socks and love them so much. And compared to them, my Zensah sleeves barely squeeze me.

What about arm sleeves? I love my compression socks and would love some for my arms but I’m not sure what kind (i.e. brand) to get. Any suggestions? I wish Pro Compression would have ones for arms….

i have a pair of nike arm warmers that i bought at the nyc race expo a couple years ago, theyre not compression or anything but they keep my arms warm!
