WORKOUT -
Ran on TM -
7.9 miles/60 mins
1% incline
Walked dog -
2.6 miles
Ran outside -
3.25 miles/28 mins
I thought I only had time for an hour at the gym so I planned on doing 30 mins easy on the TM and 30 easy on the elliptical.
But as I started running at an 8:30 pace, I realized I accidentally brought my game face so I kept speeding up until I was full out sprinting by the end of the hour and averaged 7:35 min/miles.
{The pink was written last night…}
Today’s workout was ridunk early because we’re on the lam and headed out of town all quick-like.
I’ve been home for about a week and a half and it’s hit the open road. Or at least the traffic through Riverside road.
We’re headed to Phoenix for a long weekend to enjoy some sun because we don’t get any of that here in Southern California. Really the boy wants to enjoy some cheap golf and we definitely don’t get that here.
So while he sweats his face off on the golf course, I’ll sit by the spool and read books. Don’t tell me my life is one big vacation; it’s not. It’s more like a rapid succession of small ones.
Wrote this book last night, me = winning at life.
My mother-in-law did just send me a couple books to read, I think they’re Christian fiction love stories:
{The truth written this morning, post-gym….}
What really happened is that I got up ridunk early, ran at the gym, saw the national weather on the news, came home to an awake husband who had also seen the weather and we both said, “113 degrees? Maybe going to Phoenix this weekend isn’t such a hot idea.”
what a punner I am.
So we decided to stay home. I said we should take a “staycation” and he said my whole life was one. touché.
Then the man made an omelet for himself (he offered to make me one but I wasn’t hungry yet) at 5:30am. I honestly don’t think he’s ever seen 5am in the flesh and now he’s playing Chef Boyardee?!
It’s been a weird morning.
YOU ASKED/I ANSWERED
A reader emailed me and asked,
What do you usually do right after a run? I lay flat on our wooden floor and just enjoy the sweaty heat in my face!
Perfect timing for me to answer this on such a wackjob morning.
This is *normally* my post-run routine; sometimes I get lazy and sometimes I’m short on time, but generally this is what I do:
*Come home from gym/run and change out of sweaty clothes right away.
This morning I got in the shower right away to rinse off because it was hot at the gym, it’s warm in our house, and I had major swampbutt.
Not my shower but it was for one night.
*Stretch for 5-10 minutes.
I stretched about 7 minutes today; these are some of the stretches I do. I focus on my hips and hamstrings since that’s what gets tight first for me.
*Foam roll for maybe 5 minutes.
I did this morning for almost 5 minutes; all I roll is my IT bands and hips. What helps is keeping my foam roller downstairs under our buffet because it’s right beside where I stretch in the living room so it’s easy to grab and do it.
If I have to go track it down in a closet or somewhere, foam rolling isn’t gonna happen.
*Make a protein smoothie, shake, chocolate milk.
I didn’t this morning because my stomach is feeling off; I think it was from getting up so early. But usually I’ll make a CLICK smoothie – I’ve been using the mocha flavor and then adding sugar-free coconut syrup and chocolate coconut water. Mighty fine and tasty with a good amount of protein, electrolytes and not too many calories.
*Ice while reading morning devotional and then blogging and then email.
I never take ice baths, I just use a bunch of ice packs. I also sit on 2, one under each hip.
My grode toes are hiding in shame.
*Eat breakfast.
I had a bowl of instant oatmeal with a scoop of protein powder and fat-free milk. I usually make regular oatmeal but the maple and brown sugar sounded better.
*Be lazy and do nothing.
I took Marni for a 2.6 mile/47 minute at 8am because it was getting hot and she peeters out when it’s warm.
*Persevere: keep being lazy and doing nothing
While walking her, I decided that I’d run 2.1 more miles in my neighborhood to make 10 for the day. I told myself, Just run 1 mile out and turn around. You can do 1 mile.
I ended up running a slower 3.25 miles/28 mins for 11.15 total for the day.
Now it’s high time to go chow.
Do you have a favorite pro sports team? Least favorite?
I don’t have a pro favorite team in any sport (why are the Seattle Mariners so terrible year after year?!), but I do root for individuals like Josh Hamilton, Bubba Watson and Michael Crabtree.
I’ve never liked Kobe Bryant or the Lakers reading things like this makes me sorta want to throw up…
Other sports news and other guys named Hamilton… did you read about this?

Thanks for sharing! I never thought to use ice packs and an ice bath is way too much for what little running I do.
I agree with not liking Kobe. I kind of think that professional athletes should not participate in the athletes. My grandpa couldn’t because he played professional baseball but was going to play in the Olympics for soccer, which he played for the US in the World Cup prior. Although some athletes need the sponsorship so they can train.
I hate ice baths so much, so I do the same thing with ice packs.
You are super smart to avoid Phoenix this weekend. I wish I could avoid Phoenix this weekend…it is STUPID hot!!! My daughter and I fried eggs on the sidewalk last night just to prove how stupid hot it is…as though the sweat pouring down our faces wasn’t proof enough!
Totally agreed. If I could bare to walk out of my house right now, I’d leave town. I can’t even run at 4 am– it’s just too hot even then!
Bad news for Hamilton! Will they ever learn??
One of my favorite pro teams is the Nashville Predators, hockey. My least-favorite team is any one that beats the Green Bay Packers!
But like you, I tend to like the athletes more than the teams. Currently, Chrissie Wellington (pro triathlete/Ironman World Champion) and Kristin Armstrong (cyclist/recent gold-medal-winner) are some of my favorite athletes.
Sadly Tyler Hamilton’s admission didn’t do much for cycling
And I hope I never get to the point where I think I can’t learn anything from younger athletes. God can always use them to keep me humble!
Ryan Hall is a fave, too…not sure how I could have omitted him in my previous post. Looking forward to Sunday!
Wow. You seriously run/walk a ton. I am really jealous! Damn work and daughter taking up all my time.
you might want to get rid of them both then…
all i have is a needy husband and dog. actually, neither of them are needy at all. they still think im in alaska.
You talking about icing reminded me of this post I read today saying icing was BAD. blew my mind http://www.mobilitywod.com/2012/08/people-weve-got-to-stop-icing-we-were-wrong-sooo-wrong.html
oh my. my life is a staycation as well. no idea why i just sent a resume follow up. lol.
Love running mind tricks. I sometimes do two-a days because I am nursing and am short on time and the “it’s only 2 miles out and two miles back” or so works every time.
Have you read any of those books yet? I’d like to know if there are any good.
Thanks
I read Wedding Machine and thought it was really good! Cheesy, easy read but good!
haha… LOVE your post-workout routine! Sounds almost exactly like mine right up to the chill and be lazy thing… that’s where I insert homework or school lol…
I don’t even follow basketball but I cannot stand the Lakers AND Kobe. So egotistical. I wasn’t a fan of having NBA players go to the Olympics either. Being from NH, favorite team are obviously New England teams: Patriots and Bruins! Least favorite would be anyone playing the Patriots but especially the Jets and Steelers.
I have GOT to get on the foam roll, stretch, smart stuff bandwagon. This persistant injury is killing me! To think I could have avoided it!
If you are ever in Phoenix and want to run, send me an email! I run with a fun group of people or could show you some good places to go. Just moved here a few months ago and am learning how to cope with this HEAT! You made the right decision!
thank you for the offer!
The Philadelphia Eagles! I’m from Philly so I have been a fan for years – plus I’m obsessed with football!
I absolutely have to get out of my workout gear and shower before anything. No brekkie, no reading, no emails etc. Shower and in my nice and comfy clothes, feel clean before brekkie etc.
best. game. face. ever.
way to crank it on the tready.
I foam roll and shower and stuff too. Sweet
(hehe)
I seriously am not into team sports <–unless its the US at the Olympics.
Yay! Thank you for sharing your post-run routines with us ( I am a little slow with my comments these days…). I was so curious what you usually do after your runs.
So here is my weirdo routine…When I come home from my runs, I have to climb three flights of stairs to our appartment. Then I kick off my shoes, check my time and route and speed on my tracker and then just head into our bedroom, lay flat on my back on our wooden floor, enjoy the cool floor and the sweaty heat in my face. Sounds disgusting and maybe kind of is, but I enjoy the relaxation. I can feel my blood making its wayup again since I always put my legs up on the bed while I lay on the floor. Then I do the weirdest stretching (since I am a Pilates teacher, I am a real stretch addict because I need to stay flexible).
When I am done, I fuel up on water and get a nice shower. Usually by then it’s time for breakfast and every single day I then look forward to my healthy, wholeweat, fruity yummy breakfast!
My perfect start into the day!
