WORKOUT -
Ran outside
10.1 miles/1:22
warm out, hills, no music
Monday I’ll have a review of some new workout clothes, but here’s a peek at some new capris with some greasy sunscreen face. My husband is so lucky.
I gotta rush off to get to a hair appointment because my roots are disgracing me. It might be beautiful in some Dove commercial but it ain’t flying here.
What sucks is that I just had my hair done on June 23rd in Oregon; that’s like only 6 weeks. bargh.
BIRTHDAY BUTTS
Yesterday we asked Marni what we wanted to do to celebrate her birthday. She said sniff a couple dog butts, chase her tail and pee on a fire hydrant.
We said no and decided to walk her around Laguna Beach.
Even though it wasn’t that hot and a weekday, the beach was crowded. If I’m ever pursued by the Mob and need to disappear or blend in, I’m coming here.
The fanciest fence I’ve ever seen…
Laguna Beach was as an artist’s enclave back in the 1920’s and there’s still a big artistic influence in the town with tons of art galleries and festivals.
Just kidding, it was started in September 2004 as an elaborate backdrop for MTV’s new reality show.
We decided to try a little outdoor restaurant called Sapphire but once we checked out the menu, we knew it wasn’t for us. The “global cuisine” was too high brow for our cheapo tastes… the Cobb salad had lobster (love) and shrimp and was about $20.
So we ended up at a Subway on PCH near our car with outdoor seating for the dog. it did the job.
On the way home since it was the Princess’ big day we stopped at the Laguna Beach dog park… and found out it’s always closed on Wednesdays. I guess they need a designated day to pick up the poo?

No dye here. My hair’s crazy dark, so I’d have to bleach it to get any color and putting bleach on my head terrifies me.
I used to dye my hair like crazy during the summer all through high school (part of the uniform was “natural” hair color). So I would go crazy pink or platinum/white in the summer.
Nice capris! I saw cute ones at Forever 21, and they were comfy. I didn’t buy them though, so I don’t know if they’re any good for running. Anyone try them??
I’ve gotten running capris from forever before that i LOVED, but after proooobably 5-6 washes they had a big old hole right in the crotch. so not the best quality, but i think they were like $7 so it wasn’t that big of a loss
I was just complaining to my friend yesterday that I need to get my hair highlighted only two months after the last time. I kept thinking that my hair was getting greasy after a day of not washing it but nope, that look comes from awesome roots. I’m chalking mine up to hair growing faster during pregnancy.
Did you see the compression socks 50% off on Active today? Do you like that brand?
are you talking about the schwaggle deal? http://schwaggle.active.com/deal/13653/50-percent-off-pro-compression-socks-plus-free-shipping/los-angeles
if so, yes, i love pro!
I have to dye my hair every 4 to 6 weeks. I’ve been going gray since the right old age of 21 and since I’m the cheapest person in the world I just dye it at home. I tried highlighting it for a while buy it was just too pricey and for $4 I can dye it in private while watching Real Housewives.
Virgin hair here. I have curly red hair and I actually only cut it ever 12-18 months. Super low maintenance. I don’t even wash it or comb it(except after a marathon or long, long run).
Ditto Meg, but light brown. I absolutely lucked out in the hair department. It’s for sure my claim to fame ’round these parts.
Same. I purposely wear my dark hair long so that I don’t have to get it cut more than once or twice a year. Although, to be honest, if I wasn’t a very poor graduate student, I would probably get it cut more frequently and start dyeing my hair to cover up the grey hairs that are starting to grow in.
Red as well, more auburn actually. I am 42 and starting to see a few strands of gray here and there, so I pluck them!! Would love to experiment with a richer red but I hear red dye doesn’t last long at all. Hm. Maybe I should go blonde? Who knows?! I do have to thank Skinny — used to wash mine EVERY day because I sweat so much when I run. I wash less now — use dry shampoo sometimes and I’m ok with it! Never thought I’d do that but it’s so much easier!
I’m a mostly-blond and like Meg have never dyed it and rarely cut it. I sometimes have my sister cut it for me, like maybe once every couple years, and on the other years I trim it myself. Never dyed it–it gets blonder in the summers and I love the natural highlights. Even in the winters it stays pretty light, and I like the way it looks.
I think one time in middle school I tried to dye it with kool-aid because someone said that would work and I wanted to be a redhead. Pretty sure it didn’t work and no one could tell I’d done anything different to my hair
I seem to be on the same schedule as you. Every time you write a post about your roots and getting your hair done, I check the top of my head and sure enough without hesitation I make the call and schedule my next appointment. I try to stretch it to 8 weeks in between highlights but it never works so I just buck up and get it taken care of .
im glad i could be of some help
i should work as an administrative assistant.
I used to get my hair dyed all the time and then a few years ago I just stopped. IT got to be so much of a hassle, so expensive and my hair was dying. I’m tempted all the time though to go back…
but then i realize I need that money to spend on more important things like shoes.
Yesterday was my bunny’s birthday. I bought her some toys that she quickly ignored. Marni is about the size of my bunny.
And now for my real reason for commenting: Jaymo is looking slim in those pics. Good for him!
No hair dye for me! Natural red. Love it!
In high school I bleached a strip in the front blonde though, so I HAVE dyed my hair, technically.
Yep, I’m a hair dye virgin. I like my natural color but I’m starting to get more and more gray ones so I don’t know how much longer I’ll remain a virgin.
PS Looks like Jay has lost more weight. Nice job!
True story: I’m still obsessed with LB and secretly want to be LC’s BFF.
I’ve never had my hair dyed. I also don’t own a hair dryer (never have). Probably due for a hair cut too. I’ve been pretty lucky – it won’t hold a curl for anything but aside from some massive messy buns it doesn’t put up a fight. Well until I take a comb to it.
No dye here either. I let my gray shine. It kind of looks like tinsel so it feels like Christmas year round. But no seriously, I’m just too lazy for the up keep.
No dye here
Love the Run Pretty Far tank!
I would like to go every 6 weeks but I push it to 8, today is the day though! Usually she trims it and I don’t like it till now…so today no trim! Only took 3 years to figure that out.
I’m 100% guilty of the “lets not get our hair cut for a year or two” crowd. Although now that my sisters getting married in a few months and I got a “big girl job” I get my hair cut every 8 weeks… ish. I’ve colored my hair a few times but its honestly too expensive for me to upkeep… plus it never looks as good on me as everyone else…
Sounds like a fun birthday for Marni, but where’s the cake??
I go through phases of dying or not dying my hair. I’m back to highlighting and do that about every 8 weeks. I have had pink in my hair for like three years, now, though.
I dyed my hair religiously from high school till about 2 years ago. It was a wide range of colors. I stopped because of the upkeep and I wanted to save a few $$. I miss having highlights but I don’t miss going every 8 wks. One day I’ll start coloring again!
My friends used to accuse me of having some sort of disorder because I always thought I had roots…I thought I needed to get my hair done all the time. I’ve tried to space my highlights to every 8-10 weeks and now that I’m a cheap old lady. I pretty much stick to that. It is expensive, but being blonde makes me happier.
Why did you put quotations on ‘beautiful’ when referring to the dove commercials? Don’t they display natural woman of all shapes and sizes, nude(ish) and without makeup?
just to put emphasis on it. i could have italiciazed it.
haha. fair.
I have virgin, never dyed hair! I’m scared to take the plunge and by “scared to take the plunge” I mean too cheap to pay for professional colouring
I get my hair done once every 12 weeks. I get a full highlight each time. I probably should get it done more frequently because it starts looking BAD towards the end. Very obvious roots.
I colored my hair for the last 30 years and now the letting the grey come in…very liberating.
I have been contemplating letting my grow in too, but I haven’t had the courage to do it yet. I turn 40 this year and I still feel like I’m not ready to embrace my grey hair. lol I know I should be… I’m working on it. Good for you!!
Never died my hair in my life, literally!
Used to be a natural blonde. Now I’m definitely a brunette (and in serious denial), but am not particularly motivated to do anything about it. Probably should though. lol.
I was a hair dye virgin until the rip old age of 40…then the greys just seemed to be multiplying like bunnies on the golf course. I am too cheap and broke (because I’m always cruising Marshalls and Target for clearance workout gear) to PAY to have it dyed. I like $6 from the beauty aisle at Target (L’Oreal, Garnier…whatever coupon landed in my hand). Thankfully, with my very dark brown hair, the greys just start to come back gently. There are rarely roots to contend with!
Now cuts are different: I have naturally curly hair and I can stretch the pricey cuts (I love my stylist and her great work) to every 10 weeks.
**ripE old age. I don’t rip age…it’s just a number!
Not much natural about my hair these days. As soon as the gray started showing, the color started changing! Lighter in the summer, darker in the winter.
The Kidless Kronicles
Back in my ol’ goth girl days I bleached my hair—there were only three choices for goth girls: black, red, or white–and I went white platinum. Then my mid-thirties smacked me in my face and blatantly pointed out that platinum blonde hair ages you–big time. Not pretty on a 36 year old. Now I am more of a mature (ahem) blonde, like a Naomi Watts-color. ( In my head this is perfectly reasonable and true).
I’m Finish/ Scandinavian so my hair processes to blonde pretty well but I do have some Spanish swimming in my blood so I can get seriously dark roots. You are lucky you only need to do your roots every 6 weeks or more, I have to hit the salon every 4 ½ weeks or I’m looking like former ghetto stripper without a pole. Sad.
So enough about me. This is your blog. Your lashes look amazingly long in that photo. So lovely! Let’s have another blog on clothes–that fuchsia blouse is adorable.
what, so ghetto stripper without a pole is a BAD look?? ooooops….
My hair has been almost every color under the sun – but I decided in 2007 that I’d had enough of the expensive highlights (and the damage they cause, which in turn had me spending even more on products to try to salvage it). I haven’t dyed my hair since then. It took a while to get it all grown-out and cut off (I also had the Posh Spice inverted bob, blargh), but now I have almost waist-length totally natural hair. It’s interesting – it’s a medium-light brown, but with lots of natural blonde highlights.
We totally celebrate our dog’s birthday. This year she got a parfait of her favorite foods – dog food, greek yogurt, and carrots.
I LOVE Laguna! I got married at Tivoli Too down there at one of the art festivals.
I have dark hair so I just do the store bought box to try and help cover the massive amounts of gray, sadly it doesn’t really do the trick anymore.
I have never dyed my hair. I’m pretty low key on appearance, I hardly ever wear makeup and spend very little time with hair in the morning, although I do wash it every day (all that running and sweating!) I guess I feel like there is nothing wrong with my natural hair color and why bother changing it?
dont start! keep your natural color. you will save so much money. and split ends. and bad roots.
Highlights every 6-8 weeks. Its the one thing that I will never give up no matter how much it costs!!!!!!
i feel the same way. when my hairs not done (color, not actually styling it, brushing it or even washing it) i just keep unkempt and not so fierce, borrowing some tyra bank’s lexicon.
highlights. natural dark blond hair but i gotta blend in this gray. so unfair to go gray before 30 or really before 50. i started getting the temple patches a few years ago and started highlighting then. never dyed before the gray forced me. i go about every 7 weeks. i have tried to stretch it to 8 or so, but the roots/gray piss me off. actually the gray annoys me the most. the good thing though is it seems concentrated to the temple area so i only have to highlight the top part of my hair. well, i don’t highlight it myself, that’s what hair dressers are for. so hard to find a good one.
I usually get my hair highlighted every 3 months. But last time, I went almost 6 months without a cut or color. It wasn’t a pretty sight.
hair virgin over here – my dad would be so proud
I’ve never dyed my hair– total hair dye virgin. I really like your capris!! I’ve been looking for a cute pair! I’m trying to hold out on purchasing lululemon but I haven’t found any that I like better yet..
so I used to highlight but I have fairly horrible hair and now I color it dark. I have thin fine hair and I am a hairstylists dream. I have had the same stylist for 10 years and I go to her and say, “do whatever you want”. She loves me. This last time we cut off ALL my hair and went Michelle Williams and colored it dark dark brown. My kids told me it’s seriously sexy. I still look in the mirror and wonder who the heck that person is.
I don’t dye my hair. But, the day I find a gray hair will be the day I start. I’m 31, both my parents went gray in their 30s. I expect it to happen soon!
I’ve got virigin, no-dye hair here too! Sometimes the sun bleaches it a tad, but I don’t want to cough up the $$ if I don’t NEED to. When I turn gray is another story…
I have brown hair, and I used to get blonde highlights every 6-10 weeks. I stopped in 2008 – holy crap, it’s been 4 years – and it took a full 2 years to grow out (I have long hair). My hair is so much healthier and shinier, and I definitely have some extra money in my pocket. And you know what? I have an insane amount of natural blonde highlights… who would’ve thunk? I also have some greys creeping in, but since I’ve decided to not hate myself for aging, I really don’t care.
I am going to have to start coloring my hair soon. So sad I have found more then 1 gray hair now. Bummer!!!!!
Virgin hair here – never coloured or permed or anything!!!
That means I can donate it to make wigs for people with cancer (they always say they want untreated hair) so I’ve grown it out and hacked off my pony tail and donated it twice now. I’m about 6 months or so from being able to do it again!!!
I’m walking hair factory!!!
That said, I’ll be 30-10 next year and the second I spot a gray hair I’ll be doing something about it!!!
I love my natural color now so much that I have not colored it in about 6.5 yrs. I do have a couple of silver hairs sneaking in…shiny silver, its actually a pretty color…don’t want gray…silver I’ll take..and I’m in my early 30s.
Ill admit it. Virgin, no hair dye girl here… I am just scared to death to touch my hair. It’s my security blanket for sure. Sooo many people compliment my “no dyed, shiny hair” and with my luck, it’d turn orange and break off. But the grays are coming more and more. Eventually I’ll suck it up and start with highlights.
I haven’t ever had mine colored although I want to just too cheap to keep it up!
Virgin hair. Never been dyed. Never been permed.
And long due for a cut. The boyfriend loves the long hair, and threatened to grow a beard for every inch I cut. The last time he grew a beard, he looked like a terrorist.
My boyfriend is a fireman (of forests) and is growing his all summer. ALL summer. Ugh. His terrorist looks we’re last month. Now he looks like a werewolf.
My hair is completely natural right now and will likely stay that way until I go gray! However, I wouldn’t call it virginal because I’ve dyed it before. It’s my natural blond with red highlights and I’m super lucky and yes I know. Haha
I used to die my hair. But my old stylist who i went to for 17 years fried my hair. and one day i was looking in the mirror and noticed my hair was LOPSIDED!
huh.
i now dont color my hair and have TONS of gray. of course in the front. naturally.
its not that bad. when i wear a hat and you cant see it.
naw really its not that bad.
Once or twice a year – not that I want grow it out or it’s expensive. I’m just plain lazy. I used to be fastidious about it – every 3 months or so but have slacked in the past year.
I’ve been colouring my hair since I was a teen! I liked trying out new colours and having fun with my hair. I started going gray at 18, so keeping it from showing is always a worry. This means instead of going darker, which I had been for a while (light shades of red or brown) I’ve been staying blonder since you can’t see the gray as much! I’ve been doing it myself (for financial reasons) but I may get a partial foil in September to see how long it lasts. I’ve been using John Frieda blonde highlight spray in the meantime to touchup my roots!
I just commented about this. Like you – every 6 weeks. I am usually spending at least $125 for partials in NY for it. My bf may love the highlights but the natural is growing on him and our bank account
I did highlights once in my life, but decided it was too much work and money to keep it up. So, my hair has been untouched by color for about ten years now. It’s almost too healthy from not using a hair dryer, color or product.
Love those capris… can’t wait to hear all about them
Ugh, hair color. My hair is naturally a very dark (almost black) brown and I love it. However, my gray has really started taking over in the last few years and the maintenance is awful. I color every 4 weeks, but have recently started going lighter and adding blonde highlights to help hide the new growth. Before doing that, you’d see the gray after only 2 weeks and because of the high contrast between my hair color and the gray, it made me look like I had bald spots. Hot, right? Anyway, I was just reading about Henna hair color last night. It’s supposed to work wonderfully (even on gray coverage) and is super cheap! I may have to try it. I just can’t get used to having lighter/blonde hair.
No dye here. Just starting to get some grey hairs here and there (boo) so we’ll see. I guess I’ve just never got the “dye your hair” bug and I’ve never tried it, though I’m not against it either. Happy day to you little Marni!
I can hardly type this comment because I’m laughing about “I wish the mob would beat that ‘stache off Jaymo”. Mainly because my husband likes to threaten me with growing moustaches just to see me panic. Me no likey. Also, no hair dye. Natural strawberry blonde.
