WORKOUT -
Ran hills outside
10.1 miles/1:30
hilly, hot, ugly
I knew this run would be turdtastic but I didn’t expect it to be quite as ugly and hard as it was.
My legs were tired from yesterday’s run and it was hot out so I figured this morning would be a good time to run some slow hills.
It was terrible and hard and nasty but sometimes running is hard. Sometimes you want to give up but you don’t because you don’t want to start a precedent that it’s ok to give up when it gets tough. so you don’t. simple.
HOT WEATHER RUNNING
If you’re running in hot weather, you already know to keep the clothing light colored and wear sweat-wicking technical fabrics instead of cotton. Also, wear light clothing as is not heavy, lots of layers clothing.
I love these Nike tennis skirts and I think they’re really cute, but the multiple layers of fabric aren’t great in warm, muggy weather. They just get wet with sweat and weigh you down.
I have this RunningSkirts ultra swift skirts (on sale right now) that’s really thin and light and this skirt (also on sale) that I wore today. It’s super thin and light but these skirts run small, like half a cheek is hanging out of the briefs small so you might want to go a size up.
If you’re looking for more skirt info, this post is about all the skirts I have and have tried.
BIRTHDAYS
If you’re on twitter and you’re especially bored at work, you already know that today is a monumental day in the SR household… it’s Marni’s 5th birthday.
OMG, did you see that??
I just became one of those lame people that treats their pets like humans.
Someone help me.
And Saturday is my husband’s birthday.
Happy August 1st.
Any August birthdays?
Do you celebrate your pets birthdays? your stuffed animals birthdays? your Garmin’s birthday? your blog birthday?

I also run shaded trails a lot in the summer – the trees make everything a lot cooler.
I celebrate my dog’s birthday – although it really is the day we rescued him, but it’s close enough. We got him Frosty Paws ice cream, although a shop near me does make dog cakes
I think I will get him one next year
I am not ashamed to admit that I celebrate my dog’s birthday. I don’t throw a dog party, although I would if I knew enough dogs who would come over, dogs just don’t RSVP. I do get him extra treats and toys on his birthday though.
We celebrate Bungee’s adoption day because we don’t really know when her birthday is. I totally made a cake. I’m that lame.
Mike once shaved his beard down to a fumanchu mustache. I couldn’t look him in the face without bursting out laughing.
Haha, my husband and I are those people too. We used to make fun of people like us that treat their dogs like humans…totally guilty now. We don’t have a big party, but we do acknowledge it. My birthday is the 15th this month, but not doing anything exciting for it.
Yay for August birthdays!! My dirty 30 in Sunday! Woot woot!
Happy birthday to Marni! Yes, we are weirdos that celebrate our pets’ birthdays…we get them doggie ice cream and obnoxiously sing happy birthday and then the “birthday dog” gets to sleep in bed with us (we usually do not allow our dogs in the bed). We also dress them in Halloween costumes but that’s a whole other comment altogether!
Happy Birthday Marni! I always have pet birthday parties and get them cakes from the Three Dog Bakery in Newport and they love it!
I recognize my dog’s birthday
LOL! Its sweet, my BFF just celebrated her lab’s 3rd birthday so I get it! She also is childless…also dogs appreciate things so much more than kids, maybe you 2 are on to something.
August is my 5th wedding anniversary and my husband’s 31st!
Jaymo’s competing with Matti’s moustache! but a long blond moustache is hard/impossible to beat…
I don’t celebrate my cats birthdays because they’re street cats so we have no idea when they were born, but we get them christmas gifts (Wiskas canned moist food). Lucky them!
Sad but true…I am a die hard dog lover and weirdo that treats my 2 great danes like my children. We even had our boy Trooper in our wedding. http://peacewithinyoga.blogspot.com/2011/05/1st-year-wedding-anniversary.html
Need I say more?
Love your blog!
feliz cumpleanos to su perro/Marni!
& soon to your man! I’ll tell Rocky that he has some stashe competition…although, I think mi hombre still takes gold in that category!
lotsa Aug. b-day’s this month for friends & family. Rachel, my mom, cousins, Roxy. lotsa cake which will equate to more Aug. mileage. that’s how you do it right? xtra frosting means 2 xtra miles per slice of cake!!
good for you for sticking w/your run. it makes us appreciate the really good runs!
My husband has been sporting a moustache for way too long now! It is so gross! The worst part of all is when were out in public complete strangers compliment him on it. Once we were in the middle of running a marathon and the volunteers at the water station said great stache! Don’t ever shave it! Ugh, just what I needed to hear.
It’s nice to know that sometimes running is hard for even a pro like you! It def makes me feel like less of a loser. I’ve been taking a break so a back injury could heal, and now I’m scared to start back because it’s going to be so rough! But I’ll just power through it…even if the power is low.
Haha. If I had a dog, I’d probably celebrate it’s bday. On the anniversary of the day that I adopted Matilda (my Prius), I always tell her ‘happy birthday,’ and sometimes I give her a hug. Now that is crazy!
And I celebrate my blog’s bday (which happens to be the same as Justin Bieber’s bday!)
Marni is so lucky to share a bday with MTV and Ashley Parker Angel (formerly of o-town fame…I was obviously a fan back in my HS days!).
And August is the month of my birth. So to my mother, you’re welcome for me being such a gem.
So much to love about this comment, but I’m particularly drawn to the O-town reference- I “knew” Trevor. He was Mr. Trash at our local minor league baseball field. He would dance and well collect your trash in a tuxedo.
Happy birthday, SR household! You might as well celebrate your birthday while you’re at it.
Ughh, I hate heavy running skirts. I accidentally bought one at TJ Maxx once. Now I just use it as a swim skirt.
Happy Birthday to Marni. I don’t celebrate my pet’s Birthday’s as I never know when they are….welcome back to Cali.
No, No, No, and No….hopefully those answers are in the correct order….ha!
I barely remember or care to celebrate my birthday. I totally am all over celebrating the kiddos birthday but, even after they turn 13 I am kind of over that too….it’s really not “FUN” any more. They only want money or gift cards…woohoo??!! Here’s an envelope and Happy Day. (Yes, my hubby calls me the grinch at Christmas too.)
I celebrate all birthdays. My dog’s birthday was yesterday. He shares a birthday with my brother and when I called my brother to sing him Happy Birthday, I made my brother sing to the dog too. Ha ha!
Woohoo, Jaymo and I have the same bday! Tell him I said he’s old… I’m turning the big 2-5 and having my quarter life crisis. Time to eat all the cake. Also, I adore what you said about not setting a precedent of giving up–new favorite thought, for sure. Thanks for sharing that!
Only a mustache? You should be so lucky! A few years back, my husband was going on a bison hunting trip, and he was using an old time rifle, so he decided he needed to “look the part” of an old timer (I guess), so, he grew mutton chops!! I kid you not, I made him shave the moment he got home. Crazy guy!!
hhahaha now that is funny.
Not big on the birthdays around here. But DH even celebrates our dating anniversary.
The Kidless Kronicles
Marni and I have something in common, it’s my birthday too! I absolutely celebrate my Maltipoo’s birthday, we get a cake from the local dog barkery every year.
happy birthday! i hope you get more than leftover crumbs and potty breaks like marni did.
I have a 4 year old mini wiener dog. He always gets a birthday doggy “cupcake” from this fancy dog store we have here on his special day. No shame in spoiling your dog! Happy Birthday Marni!
Happy birthday, little Marnie.
I hear you on not stopping. If I’m too lazy to wake up before you can fry and egg on the pavement to run, then I just have to suck it up and run in the heat. It sucks, but it’s good for the mental toughness too. When I just shut up the wiener voice then I’m ok!
I just LOVE you. <<<<Creepy
I really like your posts on how you overcome desire to quit during a hard run, etc. I know you're not big on food blogging or being obsessive with what you eat/weigh/etc. BUT you have mentioned you've maintained your weight over the course of many years, etc. So I'm curious if you'd be open to posting your views on moderate eating, how you overcome cravings and days where you just want to eat junk.
Lots of August b-days around here! Today would’ve been my mom’s 70th birthday (she passed away in 1984), my twins turn 15 on August 8 and my birthday is August 15th. Makes for lots of fro-yo and cupcake opportunities
Today is my boy cat’s birthday! (Or at least his estimated birthday since my parents found him in a bush outside of Golden Spoon yogurt as a wee little guy.) He is 6 and about twice the size of Marni.
So yes I guess I celebrate my animals’ birthdays.
I can’t believe it’s August.
And I can’t believe I am a crazy dog lady. Our pup turned five in June and of course we celebrated the day! If you’d have told me five years and one day ago that I would’ve been a crazy dog lady I never would have believed it!
Happy Birthday Marni & J! Have fun celebrating!
Speaking of August 1st, did you see the big deal today about Chick-fil-A appreciation day? The Chick-fil-A by my work had a line wrapped around the building and through the parking lot today at lunchtime. Guess I’ll have to appreciate Chick-fil-A another day.
My puppy’s birthday is coming up in October. I’m really excited because I’m going to buy her a pup-cake!
Maybe even a little puppy birthday hat too.
Happy birthday Marni!!
I kinda celebrate my animals birthdays….haha and I will celebrate my blog’s birthday next year
(since I just started mine).
QOTD!!!! or week, really:
“It was terrible and hard and nasty but sometimes running is hard. Sometimes you want to give up but you don’t because you don’t want to start a precedent that it’s ok to give up when it gets tough. so you don’t. simple.”
it is indeed SO SIMPLE. LOVE this reminder. thank you!
Happy birthday to all! Um – maybe a nice mach 3 razor should be on the birthday gift list
You are gone to Alaska and come back to Jbob with that thing on his face?? How rude of him.
My 25th Birthday is Sunday, Aug 5!! And I’ll spend it on the beach after church, while my brother visits me for the first time in our new city! Yay for a good 25!
Saturday is my daughter’s birthday too! She’ll be 3, and she just ran her first race last weekend (a big 400 meters). It’ll also be the President’s birthday, some handy 8/4 trivia.
Its my bday today! I was so excited when i saw the title of your blog! Its the big 25 and the first birthday I have ever had to work…i guest that comes with age. Happy bday marni!
happy birthday to you! i will call your boss and tell him you have raging diahhrea and cant make it, sound good?

Today is my kitty cat’s first birthday.. even tho he’s a boy I call him my daughter.. He falls asleep in my arms and it’s better than a kid! and I have 3 I would know.. 3 boys – hence the your ganna be daughter mmkay Mr. Kiddy?
Aug 3rd Birthday!!
Mine was july 2
I always run tennis skirts or my tennis dresses. Just used to it from D1 tennis and juniors and playing in the Southern heat and humidity!
I celebrate my puppy’s birthday every year. I always bake him a cake and cookies. His 5th birthday was on July 29th, so he got a carrot cake with cream cheese frosting. Throughout the year, I bake him (Boozer, is his name) peanut butter dog-bone shaped cookies! He absolutely loves them! Boozer is my little boy, since I am not married (yet!) and have no kids! August birthdays- my little sister turns 26 on the 7th (wow, times flies!).
just wanted to say that I kept thinking about this post when I was running a tempo run today. it was tough and I thought about cutting it short but I made myself tough it out. so, thanks for that.
my baby dog turns 4 this month. he’s a 90 lb german shepherd, so he’s not really much of a baby, but he still thinks he’s a lap dog and I let him get away with it.. he’ll get extra treats and probably a new rubber football for his birthday. I don’t have (or want) kids, so I just spoil him.
I always celebrate both my dogs birthdays with a cookie or a doggie cupcale that I make for them and make them wear those ridiculous birthday hats lol;D oh and happy Biryhday to Marni & J!
Happy Birthday Marni! Happy Birthday J! And more importantly, happy celebrating and partying this weekend SR! Nah, no celebrating any of those but I’m hoping to put in something for my sis next weekend. Can I steal your ideas after J’s birthday celebs this weekend?
Today is my dh’s birthday. He’s been on a business trip a couple of days. Yesterday I bought a bottle of rich Spanish red wine and I made a sandwich cake. As soon as I’m off work, I’ll rush home to decorate the cake before he gets home from the trip.
Happy Bday to your hubby and Marni!
Random question. do you follow a certain skincare routine that keeps your skin so pretty? you look like you have never had a zit! and i seem to break out alot when i work out. any secrets to your great complexion?
I beat the heat in Hotlanta by doing my runs at 445am. with the awful humidity we have down here it’s the only way for me!
oh and last question… how did you meet your husband? not as random as the skin question cuz you did mention husband in this post.
I absolutely celebrate my dogs birthday- she was just 6 months on July 31 her and Marni are only one day apart!
Happy Birthday to Marni!! Oh yeah, and happy early birthday to that ‘other guy’ too!!
Thank you so much for posting about the small sizing at running skirts! When I ordered my first skirt for my first 1/2 last fall, I thought I was crazy. I’m a size 6 everywhere else but the running skirt size 4 (women’s 10-12) fits my caboose best. I learned the hard way and almost ran skirtless! Happy Birthday Marni & Jaybob!
My (soon-to-be-born) son’s birthday will be in August! I am due today so he should be here anyday. My husband would like him to wait until the 10th (then his birthday would be 8/10/12
, I want him out RIGHT NOW.
We celebrate my dog’s birthday (or guessday, she was a rescue). She always get a new toy.
My husband likes to grow a beard in the winter. When he shaves it off it takes him a couple days because he likes to go to work with it looking weird/crazy and see if people call him on it. No one ever does, ridiculous!
Hahaha!!! My dog’s birthday was yesterday! I made him wear a birthday crown!
So I am one of those crazy people who treats their dogs like humans. Our dogs are our children!!!! I did a blog post about his birthday celebration:
http://sweetstarcakes.blogspot.com/2012/08/a-pugs-birthday.html
My birthday is also in August…..on the 18th! Gonna be running the AFC half marathon the day after! Happy birthday to ME!!!!
And of course, happy birthday to Marni and the pedophile! ;P
My birthday is August 19th.
Last year, I celebrated my birthday with a 20 mile run while training for the Chicago Marathon. We’ll see what this birthday brings!
My husband’s birthday is on the 28th and my Dad’s birthday is on the 31st. I haven’t planned anything for the hubs yet either, whoops
Happy Birthday to Marni and your hubs!
Happy b-day Marni!!!! We forgot to celebrate our dog’s b-day in July!! We owe him big time!
I’m going to have to get me one of those skirts. Cute!
YES I celebrate my dog’s birthday! I also celebrate my boyfriend’s dog’s birthday. In fact, in July his dog turned 3 (21 in human years) so we gave her a “shot” of water to celebrate the big day! Lame? Maybe. But, it was a lot of fun!
I celebrated my yorkie’s 5th birthday on the 31st! Happy birthday to marni!
