LOADED

by SkinnyRunner on July 20, 2012

The past couple days I’ve been busy fishing since the Inlet’s been open every day since Monday and we fish from 7am-7pm.

Yesterday we left the house at 4am and didn’t get home until 10:30pm.

Both of my brothers are pretty thoughtful dudes; I think it’s something I need to work on being better at.  Anyways, my younger brother brought early morning donuts to the boat for my dad and I.

003 (800x404)

On a side note, I have eaten more donuts in Kenai the past 2 weeks than I have the rest of the year.  I like donuts and all (who doesn’t?) but I just don’t buy them at home.  Here in Kenai, it’s something to do – you go to the grocery store and get coffee and a donut.

My favorite donut of all are the chocolate cream filled ones, you know the ones with 5000 calories.

What’s your favorite donut?  Donut or muffin?  Muffin or scone?  None of the above?

And my older brother gave me one of his Rockstar Roasted Lights, my favorite energy drink.  I sucked that baby down yesterday afternoon.

BeFunky_VintageColors_1

We started fishing in the morning and were busy nonstop all day long until the period ended.  I would literally have 5 or less minutes to run inside and get something to eat or drink so I used my time wisely… I fed Elmer an avocado shell.

012 (395x800)

What?  He needs his healthy fats too.

We were so busy because the fishing was so good.  We actually sunk our net, something I’ve never seen before.  The net floats on the top of the water because of the white corks holding it up, but the weight of all the fish sunk it.  It was craycray.

014 (800x430)

015 (800x422)

All of those fish I had to pitch (throw) into the fish hold and when we deliver, I’ll have to pitch them again into brailers (big bags that hold the fish and are pulled out of the fish hold by a crane).

016 (800x448)

We normally deliver the same night that we fish, but the cannery is so backed up with fish that we still haven’t delivered 12 hours later!  So last night we all went home and slept instead of waiting on the boat.

We were one of the last boats to come into port and my two brothers were alongside us which was kinda cool to see.

**The winner of the IN VIEW Designs medal hanger is #203 Courtney from Petiteathleat.  Courtney, please email me at sr@skinnyrunner.com and you guys go check out her blog – girl is one seriously fit athlete.

I hear you about just going to the store for something to do. I once worked in Pierre, South Dakota as an intern and was SO bored that I would just go and walk around Wal-Mart (best store in town…) every.single.night. I also saw Love Actually in the theaters 4 times…
That’s a whole lotta fish-you are getting your workout in hauling those suckers around!

Hey SR! I used to let my dog clean the avocado shell all the time but my vet told me avocados are actually really bad for dogs. I am now forced to clean it myself =).

Happy fishing!

That was actually what I was going to add as well … although great for us, avocados are really bad for dogs :( as are onions, garlic, grapes and raisins, milk, peaches and plums.

Sorry if sonmeone already sent you this list.

Also going to comment on the dogs/avocados = bad combo! I’ll contribute a GOOD fruits/veggies for dogs list, though :) – bananas, apples, carrots, broccoli, sweet potatoes, berries. Our dog LOVES bananas, they are like puppy crack! So share away when eating those things!! :)

That’s a whole lot of fish! Congrats on your big catches! I like glazed, cinnamon/sugar, and chocolate covered donuts. Donuts over muffins and muffins over scones (scones are too dry for me). Have a great day!

Just need to add that avocado can be dangerous for dogs. Just a heads up.

Wow, that is a lot of fish! Glad you are having a good season!

Donuts? My favorites are apple fritters and maple bars. I love them so much I try to avoid them whenever possible. They are so yummy but then I feel like crap from all the sugar.

And Elmer is too darn cute!

Emma July 20, 2012 at 9:59 am

So cruel that I would have to choose my favorite donut… I would have to say the cream-filled ones though, or anything that is NOT jelly filled!

That is some awesome fishing – you might have mentioned this before but what kind of fish do you normally catch? Have you ever caught anything really huge/crazy/interesting?

I heard the same thing about avocados for dogs . Not a great thing to give them.

So many fish!!

Awesome day with the fish! Favorite donut: Dunkin Donuts bavarian cream, hands down. Best. Ever.

Aw, you have such a great mom! :)

When I was younger we used to fish on the Kenai or the Kasilof in a drift boat every summer. There would always be donuts in the back of the boat, but the rule was they were off-limits until the first fish was caught. Happy memories, I haven’t had a Carrs donut in years!

I’ll eat a cream filled long john donut all day!
Happy fishing!

That’s an insane amount of fish! Your mom is super grandma/mom. How the heck did she do all that while watching two kids?!
I love donuts but also don’t buy them at home. If I did, I’m sure I’d weigh double what I do now!

Reply

Andrea July 20, 2012 at 12:15 pm

I love the maple donuts like in your picture. Yummy. I never buy them though…because I have no self-control

Not to be Debbie Downer but….I have also heard avocados are really bad for doggies. It contains something called persin which is harmless to humans but toxic to dogs in large quantities. Giving Elmer half a shell probably isn’t going to hurt him but might want to avoid it in the future.

A cinnamon roll donut is my favorite and a close second is an apple fritter. In my book, there is no such thing as a bad donut :)

That is a ton of fish, way to go! I’ve spent the last 5 minutes trying to decide on my favorite donut and I just can’t pick one, or 2. Might have to go to the store and do some taste testing tonight. Will definitely need a long run tomorrow to make up for that!

Congrats on all the fish. For me it’s a blueberry or corn muffin (the low fat ones from Stop&Shop are the bestest!), both of which I have to make myself or wait till I visit my parents to get =( – the downside of living in Belgium

I’m not crazy about donuts, but I might be in your circumstances. I’d have to choose something with SPRINKLES.

Congrats on the big catch! Thats A LOT of fish, yummy.
Thats so cute how they call for their daddy. Does Nikki normally stay at home with the kids or does she fish/cook on the boat?

I have a random compression sock question if you have time.. Im taking a 12h flight tomorrow and I want to buy compression socks (the medical old ppl ones). The sizes are based on shoe size, not calf size. Since my calves are small, Im thinking of buying a size smaller, but getting a lower compression (15-20 mmg or whatever the measure is, instead of the 20-25). What do you think?

Reply

SkinnyRunner July 22, 2012 at 3:09 pm

i personally would go with the higher compression and a small size. i just feel like the tighter it is, the more it works. safe travels!

For some reason avocados are always on the “bad for pets” lists, but my cat loves it and I give him some every day.

Apparently it is bad for some animals, but here’s a quote from an ASPCA vet: “In dogs, cats and ferrets there are no reliable reports of poisoning,” she added. “However, dogs commonly ingest the pit and it can get stuck in the digestive tract.”
And the skin seems like a potential choking hazard, too.

If you search the web on this issue, you’ll also find lots of folks who have avocado trees, even farms, and say the dogs eat windfall avocados all the time. So in my opinion, you’re probably okay, especially if you scoop out the meaty part and don’t feed the pit or skin.

I found your blog through Fitness Magazine! what a well deserved honor you got in the magazine for your blog. You’re physical beauty is obvious as you are striking! I absolutely hate donuts. Hate them. Even as a kid I couldn’t eat them. My husband looooves donuts, and thinks there is something seriously wrong with me. I also hate pancakes. I have tried to eat both donuts and pancakes, but I just can’t do it. Maybe it’s because they’re too sweet? I don’t know, but not my thang.

Congrats on the successful fishing!
