Shots from the ocean

by SkinnyRunner on July 17, 2012

We got in last night from fishing and left at five this morning for another day.

Some random shots from yesterday’s fish period…

001 (800x447)

3am wake up call and headed out of town by 4.

008 (800x431)

4:30am wheel watch (driving the boat) means lots and lots of coffee, like 17 cups.  And lots of solitaire games on the computer to stay awake – Computer, 100.  Me, 0.

010 (800x450)

The galley (kitchen) where all the magic happens (making coffee).

013 (800x550)

Boat snacks with dirty gloves.  I’ve come to the realization that I’m a closet dirtball; germs aren’t even on my radar.

022 (800x450)

Grapes on the deck, didn’t wash the grapes and definitely didn’t wash the deck.  I was probably supposed to though.

015 (800x435)

Midmorning Matti’s boat broke down so we rafted up with him and helped him figure out what was wrong.

017

Our net with a few fish in it.  We actually had our biggest day yesterday which was nice to make a couple bucks but tiring.

024 (800x410)

Headed back into the river in the evening to unload our fish, get ice and get ready for today.  If you’re wondering what we catch, it’s mostly red salmon and a couple old boots and Davy Jones’ Locker.

TgjA7xo

We wear headphones when we’re running (driving the boat) because the boat’s so loud.  and because we look cool.

or not.

025 (800x421)

All the dip netters.

The way the unloading process works is that you call the cannery as soon as you hit the mouth of the river and then you follow the person in front of you so everyone speeds into the river as fast as possible.

Well, all these dip netters who are out in chest high water got majorly waked when we cruised by at full board.

Back to the grind.

Beautiful photos! Fishing would be HARD work. Do you ever get seasick?

sometimes yes! i will put a seasick patch on if its rough and that really helps although it gives you super bad dry mouth.

I can’t even go on a smooth cruise. Or a car ride for very long! I’d DIE out there.

That first picture is beautiful. The sky is amazing. I think that’s one good thing about being up before dawn, you get a nice view for a while.

I’d have to hook myself up to a caffeine IV, lol. Beautiful shots and glad you had a good day yesterday. Happy fishing!

I love your photos! (I’m a marine biologist but I live about 4 hours from the coast so I always salivate over gorgeous shots of the ocean.) I really love the one of the coastline. Gorgeous.

Also, thanks for sharing your fishing adventures with us. It’s been interesting reading your posts on how it’s really done.

How does that song go? “What doesn’t kill you makes you stronger” I think that definitely applies to germs, and you obviously aren’t dead. I think you’re good to go :)

It sounds like you’re not getting a lot of sleep. Do all the fishing trips start late at night or early in the morning? And is that because it’s the best time to fish?

Thanks for still posting and keeping us all entertained!

Welcome to the club. Here are a couple ways I am a dirtball: I only wash my hair once a week and I never wash grapes before I eat them. My boyfriend thinks I’m sexy.

Love the photos. Salmon is on the menu for tomorrow, though I am sure whatever you are catching is much tastier than the farm stuff I got from TJs….

I always enjoy your fishing season photos, in no small part because I get all nostalgic by reading terms such as “full board” in blog-land. I grew up in lobster-boat-land in Maine but now live in the oddly ocean-less middle of the country. I get warm/fuzzies hearing familiar terms learned at the knees of my fishing family so long ago.

I love these pictures! That first one is amazing, I had to do a double take because I thought it was done with some kind of photoediting… but no that’s just an awesome view!

I also don’t have a fear of germs… and I hate germaphobes!

I LOVE the 4am photo!

It’s fascinating to me how the days are light for so much longer during the summer in Alaska…

I was wondering if you could share the brand of those workout tops one more time, I cant find the post! You were selling a couple that you didn’t want anymore but they’re tighter/halter-ish on the top and kind of flowing on the bottom!

Thank you, be safe fishing!! xo

What a completely different world from Cali! It’s pretty cool that you get to live both. Have fun with your family and hope your nets are full!

SR,
LOVE this blog! I am just beginning to get back into running and found this blog. After having a baby and putting all the focus on being a Mom, I realized I still need ME time!!! Running is something I really and joy and I am glad to be back! I usually run without music, but as I start trying longer runs I think I may need some jams. What’s on your playlist…all comments/suggestions from other readers welcome! Again LOVE the blog…you rock!

Awesome pix! I’ve always wondered what it would be like to fish in Alaska. I hope it isn’t as risky as Deadliest Catch for you – you seem to be doing just fine though :)

SkinnyRunner July 20, 2012 at 9:25 am

no, its a really really safe fishery – the weather is normally really nice and flat calm most of the time.
