Here’s Danielle’s story:
Hello again, SR friends!! I’m Danielle from Butler, Party of 2.
I was a Cat lady Blogs blogger awhile back (right before I ran my first marathon), but a LOT has gone on since then so I wanted to share my update!
My hubby & I have been married for a while now (and by a while I mean it’ll be 2 years in October), so we’re starting to toss around the idea of Baby Butlers. We have I had a few things on our my bucket list to cross off first though. Like run a marathon. Get in the best shape of my life (to give my baby the BEST, and so I’l bounce back quickly). And save up enough money for me to stop teaching and be a SAHM. You know, just a few minor things.
Like I said in my CLB, I played ball in college, so all I’ve ever known is competition. I love to compete, specially when it is something I can use to challenge myself. I like to be working towards something and I love the sense of accomplishment.
After my first marathon (R&R in Savannah in November), I decided I wanted to do another.
All you runners know what’s up. You run one and you get the fever! I trained for ING Miami at the end of January. (GREAT race, BTW.)
Here’s the deal though…I was eating pretty decent (mostly clean, just struggled with a sweet tooth), running 40+ miles a week, still doing some lifting, and somehow I was heavier than ever. Not exactly fitting into my whole “get in the best shape of my life” plan. Now, I’m not one to focus on a number on the scale- Weight is JUST a number to me! BUT…my clothes were snug & I was NOT happy with my body composition. AT ALL. My cankles were seriously OOC too. Ridiculous. Who knew a marathon is NOT a diet??
So, I kept hearing all these people talk about the Advocare 24 Day Challenge. Losing weight, more energy, lower blood pressure/cholesterol, etc. I feel like there are constantly new “weight loss scams,” so I didn’t give it much thought. After training for 2 full marathons in three months and GAINING weight (and being miserable with my body), I kind figured my body was stuck at it’s “set weight” anyway.
I kinda gave up on the idea of losing weight. (Keep in mind, I wasn’t obese or anything….I just wasn’t happy with the the way my clothes were fitting or the way I looked in a swimsuit.)
(On my honeymoon)
to….
(after my 2nd marathon- about 12 lbs heavier)
Finally one of my friends at work, who is also the cross country coach and an avid runner, came into my classroom at school absolutely PUMPED that he just cut
his mile time and crushed a 5:37 mile! How? Advocare!! That was enough to make me take a second look at these products I kept hearing so much about. My
hubby is already a stud and super fit, but he had high slightly elevated blood pressure.
I’m a super freak about what we eat/take, so I did a TON of research and really liked what I saw. Advocare is a wellness and nutrition company that has been around for 19 years, is backed by the top medical/science advisory board and sports advisory council (one of the doctors even invented the IV), and all the science behind the products makes total sense. It’s banned-substance free, made from natural ingredients (mostly vitamins, minerals, teas, and plant extracts), and is backed by several endorsers & professional athletes, (Drew Brees is the national spokesperson), and some of the products were even recommended on Dr. Oz.

So…my hubby and I decided to become members for the 20% discount because we’re cheap & don’t like to pay full price for anything we already take lots of vitamins and supplements, so might as well get a discount, right? We both completed the “24 Day Challenge” with Advocare.
The average person loses 12 lbs, 10 inches, and 4% body fat. I was pretty skeptical (hello, running 45+ miles a week & eating pretty clean), but we did it together & I was PUMPED that I lost about 6 lbs (which may not sound like a lot…but that was 2 pants sizes!!!) and a TON of inches!!
Jon lost 4 lbs, a couple inches around his waist, and his blood pressure came back down to normal!! Pretty sweet results!!! We both felt so good and had so much energy (nap queen over here even quit taking naps! Somebody alert the media….because that is a BIG DEAL, friends!) that we started sharing with ALL of our friends and families!! I mean really, who do you know that is NOT looking to lose a few lbs, jump start weight loss or break through a plateau, have more energy or perform better with fitness/athletics? EVERYONE is seeing the same kind of INCREDIBLE results we did, so I KNOW it’s the real deal.
That 6 lbs was just on the challenge. We have both stayed on the products and I have continued losing and toning. I actually weighed 126.6 this morning!!! WOOT WOOT!!! I’m not all about a number on a scale, but since I look and feel better, and I haven’t weighed that since like 5th grade, I’m pretty pumped!
After seeing such great results and getting control of my sweet tooth, I decided it was time to knock out goal # 2 on my bucket list. Fitness competition!! Check out my befores, progess pics, and competition photos!!!
Mid March, my “Before” pics!
April-May…Some “Progress” Shots….
June…A few more weeks till competition!
June 30th….(3 1/2 months into my Advocare Journey)
Yes, I know LOTS of women think this is disgusting, appalling, degrading, whatever….but it was just something I wanted to do for ME. To get the in the BEST shape of my life. To show myself that I CAN control what I put in my mouth and I CAN push myself in the gym. I needed a GOAL and to KNOW I was working for something besides just to prove it to myself, or else I probably woulda quit. I don’t think I’ll ever do another one, but it was a good experience. (And in case you’re wondering, I got 3rd place & Best Overall Stage Presentation- whatever that means).
So, for those of you who are doubting…. YES, I did change my diet, YES, I did take a fat burner, and YES, I did increase the intensity and frequency of my workouts. I ate a perfectly clean diet for 3 months, didn’t skip a workout (lots of HIIT and body weight exercises), and BUSTED my tail in the gym!!! So no, this is not some “fad diet” that magically takes you from one extreme to the next. It’s not even close actually.
However, that’s where Advocare comes in: I had more self-control with my diet by filling in the nutritional gaps and giving my body what it needs as far as nutritional supplements (MNS-Max 3 vitamins, Probiotics, & OmegaPlex). I was able to work out more often and go harder because of the Performance Elite workout line (Spark, Arginine, O2 Gold, Post Workout Recovery, & Nighttime Recovery). And the Catalyst (originally designed for U.S. Olympic wrestling team to build lean muscle) and ThermoPlus (thermogenic, speeds up metabolism) worked wonders for me. So I DEFINITELY attribute my success to these incredible products. And it all started with the 24 Day Challenge!
Plus, since the company pays you for referrals if you’re a member, we have earned some awesome extra money with it.
I know Advocare is not right for everyone. But I for one am SUPER THANKFUL it came into out path!! It has definitely been a blessing!!!
And I know some people have tried EVERYTHING and have been WAITING for a solution…..so maybe this is it!!! Maybe Advocare IS right for you, just like it was right for us! If you’re looking for some high quality vitamins/supplements, check out the website. They have 5 AWESOME lines and there really is something for everyone. (For real, I have everyone in my family on it….from my 6 year old niece to my 60 year old Daddy!)
I know it sounds too good to be true, but I promise, it’s the REAL DEAL.
If you click on “Advocare” in the label cloud of my blog, you can check out more of my favorite products…
Here’s some more info about the 24 Day Challenge:

Wow! You look fantastic. Who cares what the haters say! You did that for you and it turned out wonderfully. So good! Congratulations!
Wow! Awesome progress pics, very motivational and inspirational! Now if there was only some way to do that without a fat burner and on the cheap! ((scratches head))
I hope you don’t get too many hate comments!
I think that this was a wonderful post. She looked good to begin with, but cranked it up a notch in a healthy way! Way to go!
They’d have to be jealous haters, she put in 90 das of intense work. No need to hate!
Danielle – Congratulations on your success! You are beautiful (both before and after).
I love advocare! I too took the 24 day challenge and kept on the products and am down 22lbs and feeling great!
Loved reading this. Makes me wanna get in that kinda shape!!!!
You look amazing! Can you share any clean eating “go-to’s”? I’ve got the working out part down for the most part, but could use some help on the eating front!
I loved this post so much. It was like most all of your posts very informative and inspirational… She should be so very proud of herself for putting in the hard work it defiantly paid off. I see women in our gym training for Bikini competitions and they dont seem to have half the dedication she does, and it shows… I am defiantly going to look into advacore I need to drop 10 more lbs and hopefully it will help in my upcoming half!!
I have been drinking spark for years. Im kinda addicted. I have never really done any other advocare stuff but way impressed! Way to go girl!
Danielle – good for you to accomplish such a goal.
SR – good for you for keeping your blog the way you want it.
I’ve run 5 marathons and the problem with that distance is that your body/muscles hold on to so much water and you become ravenously hungry to compensate for the burned calories. I always tell ppl that marathon training is NOT the time to lose weight (unless you have a significant amount to lose) and usually ppl gain weight.
That said, I’ve found that after a few marathons, things changed. My body wasn’t so bloated and I wasn’t nearly as hungry. It took running for years and training for more than a few marathons (and half ironmans actually) for my body to adjust and now I don’t feel like I have to eat everything in sight. Even though I can now maintain a nice slim shape with distance running, I still find that 6-10 mile runs or about 20 miles a week of running is optimal for losing weight and maintaining that loss (accompanied with strength training, HIIT, etc). It’s the perfect amount of running that allows for cardiovascular benefits AND calorie burning without ramping up your hunger.
Ok, sorry for the novel! I’m actually really interested in trying this Advocare and will definitely look into it more! As a good PhD student, I’ll probably want to see some rigorous empirical studies rather than anecdotal evidence before trying it out because I suspect that if I just “ate clean for 3 months, didn’t skip a workout, and busted my butt in the gym” I would be in peak condition looks wise too
What’s with the pre-hate hate in the comments?
This girl worked her butt off for her body, the supplements merely provided a placebo effect. It’s cool she’s getting a check from them, but SHE did the work. (And then lost another 10 pounds by dumping on the spray tan, which is really the only “ew” thing I have to say. I know it’s expected in the industry).
I totally agree. I will NEVER understand why people think it’s attractive to look like a burnt carrot, but this girl put in an insane amout of hard work and dedication, so props to her.
I have to agree there! I felt like a freakin’ idiot with that dark of a spray tan and was embarassed to go out in public. Ha!! It was just competition spray and washed off quickly though, thankfully!
For whatever reason, that’s what they want you to do in shows. I guess it makes the muscle definition pop more? Still, not attractive.
Like I said, I won’t do another one, but it was a good experience. And my hubby did my spray tan (he’s a panter, so he rocks with a spray gun!).
Thanks for the props!
Not a hater but a CONGRATULATER!! Awesome! Great work.
Wow! It’s amazing how much change you can see through your progress photos! I don’t know if Advocare is for me, but I’m all for people doing what works best for them. Get it, girl!
Okay, I’m probably going to get labeled a hater because I think this was a total BS post. Seriously, good for her that she lost some weight and feels great and all that, no hate there, whatever makes a person happy – and no envy either, for reals.
What I will absolutely hate on is the pimping of a bunch of pills and shakes as the solution, as opposed to looking more closely at diet and maybe seeking proper REAL nutrition solutions as opposed to a bunch of chemicals.
Whole foods, plant-based diets can produce the same results, I can attest to that because I’ve lost 25lbs and I have two kids and I make my workouts count when I do them. I cut out all meat and dairy and eat as many “from scratch” foods as I can and lots of veggies and fruit – and I haven’t had to take a single “appetite control” or “catalyst” pill because I’m eating like nature meant for us to eat!
A lifestyle that focuses on a diet free of a bunch of crap is far more beneficial long term than whatever you can buy in this sh*tstorm of chemicals.
Might as well find someone who wants to sell us the benefits of HydroxyCut – same difference. This is just another one of those eye rolling posts that keep popping up on your otherwise fabulous blog, my bad for falling for it.
Bring on the flames, this is just a disappointing post, dude.
sorry i couldnt meet your needs perfectly. ill try better next time. please dont spank me, mommy.
You knew you were going to get flack – just accept it, no need to get all defensive. I’m disappointed today, but I’ll be back tomorrow so it’s really not that big a deal. I just wish it wasn’t rolled out like this amazing journey when all it is is a bunch of pills, and a sales pitch. Obviously I’m difficult to please today.
And I’m a non-violent reader, no spankings.
maybe you could’ve been just a tad more diplomatic – it’s not like SR said “yo – do like this girl cuz i did and i’m awesome”.
you suggest what sounds like a vegan lifestyle, which is quite possibly the most difficult diet to adhere to healthfully without supplementing vitamin/mineral pills.
just a thought.
and i’m with you on the designer diet/pyramid scheme – however, these plans do work for ppl who put the time/money in. i’ve got an herbalife friend and her shtick is “why not jump start weight loss with herbalife, and then stick to a regimented clean diet?” not a bad point for some ppl, but as a scientist it’s not a valid point to me nonetheless.
I havebeen a loyal reader Danielle’s blog actually till she started out with the advocare commercial. I also do not believe in pill popping because when its all said and done and you dont want to be a pill popper anymore or spend the money, well where does that leave you. I think you can gain her results the same way she did (busting your booty) without the pills. Eating right so that your body is fueled properly and making every workout count is the best way! I have lost 50lbs doing that alone. I wasnt impressed with this post but again this is a guest post and not SR herself and sometimes people need the extra push to get started. Like both ladies said this isnt for everyone and I agree completely because this isnt for me!
Just want to clarify that a vegan diet is actually very easy to follow, extremely healthful (especially compared to a standard American diet) and requires only supplementation with B12. B12 is synthesized by bacteria, and the only reason you can get it from meat consumption is that bacteria grows on dead flesh. Aside from the health benefits of a vegan lifestyle, it is a compassionate way to eat.
nothing is wrong with vegan – but it is a decision that requires a lot of research and planning and it can be expensive.

http://www.cleveland.com/taste/index.ssf/2012/03/veganism_a_plant-based_lifesty.html
and i’m for compassion too – funny thing to say on a fishermans blog! – but i go for pasture raised meats and free range poultry.
Wow, SR. I’ve always liked that you are sarcastic and hilarious, but this is a really rude/mocking thing to say to a reader. Off-putting and childish, really.
oh come on, im just joking around. dont get your panties in a bunch.
I thought the same, very childish.
I agree. Love your blog, but this reader was just reflecting an honest (and not rude opinion) and you reacted like a child. As a blogger, it’s good to respect other people’s thoughts and not act so (immature) defensive when they may disagree with something said.
How Silly. I do not believe SR’s comment was immature or childish. Rather, the poster ‘Mommy’ was a bit sanctimonious and smug in her comment. She could have made her points without the disdainful sarcasm. SR’s initial comment was witty and clever, quite in keeping with her blog character, and it diffused the situation from blowing up. That is until your comments (Lee and Krista) appeared.
The girl, Danielle, didn’t say the Advocare program was the ONLY solution (as Mommy indicated). Danielle also did extensive workouts, she said the program was a part of her overall fitness program which was right for her–at that time–and might not be right for everyone… and here is Mommy claiming her way is ONLY way. If that was true we should all run out and have 2 kids.
Yes. My 3 cents.
I think the point of this post was to give this reader her due to her amazing weightloss journey. You don’t have to follow Advocare if you don’t want to….or you can if you do. It was one readers journey…we all have different journeys into this health and wellness life we are all trying to obtain. SR…keep these reader posts coming…mine will be sent your way soon!
Well said and I couldn’t agree more!
I totally agree! This post was SUPER motivating for me.
Amen.
Thank you for this. I as well LOVE SR and I think she lives a wonderfully balanced life and I will always love her blog. I do not agree that there is a ‘quick fix’ to becoming healthy (and possibly lose weight). I’ve seen numerous doctors and nutrition specialists that deal specifically with endurance athletes and each of them will say any clean balanced diet will give you all the nutrients needed to live a healthy life. What happens when the pills/smoothies stop? Is it healthy to continue this regiment forever?
amen sister, thanks for your thoughts, i was thinking the same thing and was SO surprised to find this post on this blog. oh wells!
Danielle looks amazing!!!! You go girl!!
Mommy needs to stop hating… When you criticize others for their accomplishments you are just showing insecurity with yourself. I can guarantee she’s just jealous…and with a name like “mommy”…puhlease haha
Ah, Drew, I love you so, but you endorse EVERYTHING. I don’t know why he’s negotiating such an enormous salary – he surely makes a killing on endorsements.
And he’s opening a Jimmy John’s franchise two blocks from my house. I am astonished. A CHAIN, and a FRANCHISE at that, in New Orleans?! This man can get away with murder in this city.
he should open a beignets store. are those things really that amazing? ive never tried one but think i need to.
Yes. They are really that amazing.
They totally are little puffs of amazing sugary fried heaven. You should try one…but they’re really messy to eat so I almost never do. Powdered sugar and I don’t get along.
Yes, they are! Come run the Rock and Roll New Orleans with me in February and I’ll treat you at Cafe Du Monde!
Cafe Du Monde is my happy place.
I’m doing the full RnR New Orleans too – see ya there
Great read! Congrats girl!
Inspiring post re all her hard work, but lame in regards to the snake oil.
Congrats to her, her before and after pics are really inspiring. She really does look like she worked her butt off, but I don’t think she needed the pill/ supplement system to get her there. And did she really state that she has her 6 year old niece taking diet pills/thermogenics!?! Wow
Agreed! I know many fitness and figure competitors who’ve achieved the same in 3 months withOUT any fancy products. Kudos to her for all her hard work, but I can guarantee she’d look the same with 3 months of kicking butt in the gym and kitchen without anything else.
I love ya, SR–really do. Read your blog every day. Through you I’ve found some other great bloggers (Sweaty Emily, Sarah Oual), and enjoy reading about your readers, but this story was a turn-off. Great for Danielle on her weight loss journey. Seriously. Girl obviously worked hard for that kind of transformation. But the hard sell pyramid scheme stuff is bad. The last third of the post is like the weight loss supplement ads section in the back of US Weekly. I would have enjoyed reading her story without the heavy handed sales pitch element.
Yep. More power to her except for the sales pitch. I agree.
I agree with everything you said, including loving SRs blog. I hate the idea of anyone believing that they would need to invest a lot of money into all of these products to achieve the same results.
I agree with this 100%. I like your blog SR, and I’m going to keep reading, but I do think less of you (and all the products you actually do endorse) when you put stuff like this on your blog. I appreciate you were trying to help out a friend, but it does make me question your judgement, that’s all. BTW- no offense intended to Danielle, I genuinely hope you are able to stay happy and healthy after this experience.
I agree 100%. Love your blog SR, I’m a big fan of you promoting your readers’ blogs and stories, but the obvious sales pitch at the end of the guest post makes no sense to me. Danielle including the photo of her referral check and a link to “income opportunity” is just bizarre. Was surprised to see that on SR.
Great job on the achievements. However, I’m not one for anything other than wholesome food.
Thank y’all so much for the sweet comments & encouragement! I absolutely did work my tail off, and I really appreciate every comment!!! It took a lot of discipline…but it was neat to see my progress and watch my body change. I feel better now that my clothes are fitting better, and it wa a reminder (just like the marathons) that I can do ANYTHING if I want it bad enough.
Honestly, I had tried for forever to achieve it on my own with clean eating & intense workouts….but I wasn’t getting the results I wanted. That’s why I decided I needed some nutritional supplements. Could I have accomplished that with clean eating & intense workouts alone? Yes, sure. If it was that easy, we’d all look like biniki competitors, right? The problem is, I couldn’t get my sweet tooth under control, and I was too tired to work out at the intensity level or consistency I wanted. Like I said, THAT is where I give Advocare the credit.
Guess I should have been more clear on a couple things though.
1. I did eat clean, real, whole foods every single day. 6 meals a day, lots of lean protein, eggs, tons of veggies, raw nuts, sweet potatoes, brown rice, & natural peanut butter. The supplements were to fill in the nutritional gaps. I didn’t skip meals….only replaced breakfast with the shakes ( it’s the perfect 1:1 ratio of protein to carbs, 24 g of each). I did that because they are DELICIOUS and since I felt like I was getting a strawberry milkshake for breakfast, it helped satisfy my sweet tooth. The “pills” are nutritional supplements….they are all natural- mostly vitamins, minerals, and plant and seed extracts. No chemicals….that’s why I like it!!
http://www.butlerpartyof2.com/2012/06/why-do-we-need-supplements-this-is-must.html
2. Advocare is not right for everyone. But it might be right for someone looking to jump start weight loss, break through a plateau, tone up, have more energy, improve athletic/fitness performance, etc. I always encourage people to do the research like I did. it’s banned substance free, & used by multiple Olympic athletes, profressional athletes, and college athletes. If it’s what the pros want to put in their body (safe, natural, and effective), then it’s good enough for me. It’s also backed by one of the TOP science/medical advisory boards. The doctor who developed IVs is the same doctor who developed the meal replacement shakes. It’s DEFINITELY not a diet. You still have to eat, and you have to eat as healthy and clean as possible to achieve results. A diet very similar to what Mommy listed, but you can have lean protein (chicken, fish, tuna, etc.). It is paired WITH a healthy lifestyle and is meant to help people get started on a healthier path….not a band-aid, magic cure all diet pill. Nothing like that. Just supplements paired WITH clean eating to fill in nutritional gaps & help your body function at its best, the way it’s designed to. We really should all be cleansing (it’s gentle, and you don’t fast like some cleanses) every few months or so anyway to get all the toxins out. It’ll help your body absorb nutrients better.
3. My niece takes the chewy multivitamins for kids.
There are 5 product lines….one being Wellness. That’s what my niece, dad, and now me (that I’m in the maintenance phase & thinking about having babies) are all on. Multis, omegas, probiotics…
4. I did this for ME. To get in the best shape of my life pre-babies. I don’t have great genetics, so I want to give my baby the best and be able to bounce back quickly. I asked my husband if he minded, and he told me to go for it! So I did. And it was hard, hard work. But I’m so glad I did it. It was neat to see what I can accomplish when I put my mind to it. And now
5. I love SR!!!!!!! Just sayin’. Hands down my favorite blogger!!
Oops…posted twice….didn’t show up the first time.
Is it FDA approved?
FDA has no regulation authority over supplements before they hit the market. They only intervene when products have shown to be significantly harmful (i.e. death) like Xenadrine was.
What about Alli? Why are they the exception?
Alli, is not a supplement, it is an OTC product created by a pharmaceutical company. It is a lipase inhibitor that reduces the amount of lipase in the intestine, which overall decreases the amount of fat absorbed.
Eh you can’t win them all, Sarah.
I’ll still read you daily! Hope you are enjoying Alaska!!
Congrats to Danielle for putting in the work to achieve her goal! Advocare prods look interesting but I won’t be joining in.
I think people need to do whatever works for them. More power to you! It is unfortunate that the people who could possibly benefit the most from something like that are the ones with the least amount of financial resources to do it.
And there was no talk about the possible side effects of any of the supplements. And there are some. Especially the thermogenics.
The Kidless Kronicles
Long time reader, I don’t think I have ever commented.
SR, I do love your blogging style, the amplified version of yourself is quite satisfying to read. You are quite brave/secure to post this rather controversial story. I think she looks fabulous and that the pills were probably a placebo and encouraged her to ACTUALLY eat clean and kick butt in her exercise regimen.
That said, the only thing I am wondering is if there has been much research (on your part or on Danielle’s part) about the possible side effects of the supplements?? I had a friend in college that destroyed her endocrine system via chemically similar diet supplements. (I have a pharmacy background). They found our the effects 8 years later. She used them to lose a few lbs when she was 17, and her horrible health problems didn’t show up until she was in her 20s.
Pills freak me out, and the fact that she said her 6 year old niece is on it is beyond wrong. Take the kid away from the TV, stop feeding her processed sugar and grains, and let her join sports/dance. OR better yet, let her dig clams out of the mud flats!
She just said that her niece takes Multi-vitamins for kids? A LOT of parents, good active parents, give there children Multi-vitamins…
it’s pretty much a guarantee that fat burners will put you into kidney/renal failure if you don’t consume enough water while taking them and follow a strict diet. that’s pretty intense shizzle right thur!
Very true about fat burners, JRo. If you take them and ever deviate from the diet plan, disastrous effects ensure. Orange colored stool, foul smelling stools and gas, anal leakage, inability to process healthy fats necessary for proper organ function. Kidney failure is pretty up there and has someone who has had kidney issues along with multiple surgeries, it really is not an enjoyable experience.
Personally, I don’t think anyone without a medical or pharmaceutical background should be touching this stuff. Seriously, take a few classes in advanced organic chemistry and see what this stuff actually does to you. They are not regulated by any legitimate health/ advisory system and long term effects are not tested.
Perhaps we should all be grateful we have access to plentiful food and healthy bodies that allow us to run marathons. Vanity does interfere with these values sometimes, I get it we are all human.
Some part of me is annoyed with her because she “cheated”. At 22, maybe I do not understand as I am 5’9 and 116 lbs and would love to gain some muscle…But again, not everyone’s body can be modified through natural means. Ask me my opinion again 20 years from now, I may secretly want to go on the pill train myself, haha.
Interesting read and, with or without pills, an amazing achievement, cause pills don’t make you look that way, only hard work does. But what about afterwards? How long do you have to keep up the pill-popping to stay looking like this? It’s not really maintainable, is it? That would be my main worry (plus I’d hate to have done this once and then for the rest of my life look longingly back at those pix, wishing I’d still look like that!).
Not sure what I think about the supplements, but this is YOUR blog and you can feature whatever you want on it!
And congrats to Danielle!
Good post…I’ve read about Advocare on several Crossfit blogs…not everyone…but maybe for some…my opinion is don’t knock something until you try it…if you don’t want to try it…don’t. Just don’t be judgmental about what someone else is doing. Good for her on her weightloss journey! She looks amazing.
Hello SR! I enjoy seeing a post about someones weight loss story. It takes a lot of changes, ups and downs to make those big changes happen (especially when there is a guy around that likes to eat more food.. eh) I also lost a considerable amount of weight and competed in a Figure Competition. Takes a lot of work and living in the gym (if you ask nicely, you can get a cot! ha). That being said, not a huge fan of the supplement pushing she is doing but … supplements can make a big difference if done correctly and under the guidance of a Doc. Different strokes for different folks. Congrats on kicking tail and accomplishing your goals. Keep on pumping on!
I was shocked when I was reading this post, about Danielle. I’ve been reading her blog, Butler, Party of 2, for over a year now. I knew about her love of Advocare products and her clean eating & workouts. I do not believe in the business, so I do not support Advocare nor have I purchased any of the products. But I can easily pass through that because her blog is full of good healthy eating tips & workout information, also she is a strong-Christian that shares her beliefs through her blog. But I was surprised because she did not disclose on her blog that she was actually training for a fitness competition, so the “bikini competition” headline really confused me. Most of the photos that were shown have been on her blog to acknowledge her progress of Advocare, so no surprise there. Also, I remember the “made up” pictues of full-on hair and makeup, she said her friend had came over and they had some fun with hair extensions, makeup, tanning, etc, which she quickly stated that her hubby didn’t like. Does any one else read her blog? Were you just as surprised as I was? Honestly, I haven’t missed any of her posts, thanks for Google Reader – so I’m just disappointed that as reader, I wasn’t able to get the “whole” story.
I think we can all agree on one thing – it is all about FEELING GOOD about yourself. Congrats to you for finding that!!!
I read her blog too (and actually take some of the Advocare products because of her) and I was surprised to see this post here first…that doesn’t mean she won’t do a post on her own page though. Maybe she has one planned already and its just not up yet.
Hey Beth-
The reason I didn’t post about this in particular is because I have LOTS of kids from church & former students who read my blog. I don’t tell them about it….they find it on their own. I’ve debated on going private, but they like the devotions and nutrition info/health tips, and I do feel like I have some good info for them so I’m okay with it.
I posted a lot of my progress pics, but I felt like the swimsuit for the show (with the shoes, tan, hair, etc.) was a little much for them to see. So I decided just not to post those pics in particular. (Honestly, I felt ridiculous with all that makeup, those extensions, the spray tan, etc. I prefer more natural, but it was just a one-time deal for the show!)
I did post in my Jan blog post with goals for the year that I wanted to do a competition. And I posted a lot about my progress along the way….
Thanks for the following up, I do appreciate you setting me straight. I should have known/realized there were underlying reasons that you chose not to share with your own readers, and I respect your decision to keep this part of your life private. As a reader, I think your blog is great (minus the Advocare stuff) and that’s why I will continue to read.
Yes, I love reading her blog especailly prior to advocare. I remember the made up pics too. Anyway, thought her old body was awesome. In the recent pics her face is starting to sink and she may be muscular but I do think she is looking to skinny. I am hesitant about supplements. Its like the post about the junk pumped into chickens making them bigger faster. Its what it reminds me of. Still a congrats on the body AND the hardwork. Just becareful. When you look at recent photos and your older ones it looks like your melting away….
I was come truly shocke that she did a fitness competition. Having read her personal blog for years I never would have ever guessed she would have done a bikini contest – which is essentially what that is. I have been quite turned off lately by the constant Advocare sale pitch – honestly. Quite disappointed …
great post. i can kinda see The Mommy’s point of view as well too though. i have never tried supplements in order to get in a healthy weight, so i have no comparing here. however, i would be willing to try a supplement to help me with the extra body fat ( around the tummy ). hmmm.
Seriously, Danielle looks great! Congratulations to you, girl! I did my first half the end of April and was never heavier so I totally appreciate the problem she had. Of course, I am too cheap to do the supplement thing and love grease too much to do the strict clean eating thing so I am going to stick to my weight watchers and insanity dvds.
I think we need to focus on the important thing here though. Danielle, where did you get that blue maxi dress and necklace in the bottom photo. Want.
Marshall’s…..both of them!! I’m cheap too, so that’s about the only place I shop!
Love it!
Thank y’all for the encouragement! I really did absolutley work my TAIL off….it took a LOT of discipline! I liked challenging myself and seeing my body change though. And, it was good for me to see (just like in a marathon) I CAN do something if I put my mind to it.
Could I have achieved that with clean eating and intense workouts alone? Absolutely. That’s the problem though, I was TRYING to do it on my own like we’re told….and I sure wasn’t getting results like that. If it was that easy to eat perfectly clean & work out like I did while training, I guess we’d all have perfect physiques, right? That’s where Advocare came in for me. I felt like I had more control over my diet, didn’t have cravings, and was able to go longer/harder in the gym and recover faster (because their protein ROCKS and they have a killer product called Nighttime Recovery).
Guess I should have clarified a couple of things, though:
1. I did still eat. I’m 100% with all of you about real, whole foods & clean eating, and that’s exactly how I accomplished this!! I ate 6 small meals a day….lots of lean protein, eggs, raw almonds, tons of veggies, sweet potatoes, brown rice, natural peanut butter, etc. The supplements were to fill in the nutritional gaps that even a clean, healthy diet has because of the way our food is made these days. The shakes are only for breakfast (honestly, most of us aren’t eating the proper breakfast anyway) and they are the perfect 1:1 ratio of carbs to protein (24 g of each). Plus, they’re delcious, and since it tastes like a strawberry milkshake, it’s helped satisty my sweet tooth. Still 5 more meals of clean foods throughout the rest of the day, every 2-3 hours. This is DEFINITELY not a fad diet, magic cure all deal. It just helped me tighten up on my already clean diet (that dang sweet tooth!) and have more energy to make it though some tough workouts.
Here’s why I believe in nutritional supplementation:
http://www.butlerpartyof2.com/2012/06/why-do-we-need-supplements-this-is-must.html
2. I did this for ME. To get in the best shape of my life before babies (i don’t have great genetics, so I know it’s going to be tough for me to lose baby weight…I wasnted to give myself best possible starting place). Plus, I don’t want to binge on junk food once I do get pregnant, so I knew I needed to get in a routine of a consistently clean diet with limited cheats, and I couldn’t seem to break that cycle of cheating (like I said, sweets). I took the fat burners to get where I wanted, and now I’m just maintaining. I haven’t gained back…And I’m taking the multis, omegas, and probiotics (and shakes and Spark- LOVE them both!!) to get ready. My OBGYN said the CorePlex with Iron (multi) + OmegaPlex (with DHA) is better than most prenatals.
3. My niece is on the chewy multivitamins for kids. My dad is on the multis, omegas, and joint promotion. Advocare has 5 lines, one being wellness- which is what I’m on now that I achieved my weight loss/toning goals from those lines. Of COURSE you can’t give a kid a thermogenic!!
4.I really didn’t mean to sound sales pitchy. Honestly. I know Advocare is NOT right for everyone, but it was right for me and we will stay on the products for forever. I was totally skeptical at first, but I look and feel better than ever, so I really believe it may be a solution for some people who are looking to jump start some weight loss, break through a plateau, have more energy (without crazy Monsters, Red Bulls, Mt. Dew, 8 cups of coffee, etc), perform better with sports/fitness/running, or possibly extra income. Like I said, they have 5 lines…there really is something for everyone. If it’s good enough for MULTIPLE Olympic athletes, profressional athletes, and college athletes (because it’s natural, safe, and effective, and still banned-substance free), then it’s good enough for me. They know they need nutritional supplementation to perform their best- and I agree with them. So I just wanted to share it in case anyone else is where I was….stuck at a weight/body composition they don’t like, and looking for a safe, healthy, natural solution….
5. It’s NOT chemicals. It’s all natural- mostly vitamins, minerals, amino acids, naturally occuring substances like plant and seed extracts. That’s WHY I love it….Because like I said, I’m a nut about what we put in our body. I did my research. Backed my top medical/science advisory board….One of the doctors who helped develop the meal replacements shakes (that you only drink for one meal a day…it’s not a “shake” diet) is the VERY same doctor who invented IV nutrition….
6. I LOVE SR!!!! Seriously, she rocks. One of my fave bloggers, hands down!
I’m not trying to insult you or your post but saying “all natural” really does not mean much. This phrase is not regulated by the FDA and can technically mean an all natural chemical. Just like you see “all natural’ cheese puffs, then you can’t understand the ingredients.
I am happy for the success she found and it was nice of Sarah to let her post her story on her blog. I grew up with herbalife products and my inlaws made TONS of money as distributors in the early 90′s-they has their own plans sort of money. They also started there own company-omnitrition which they still own today. There are SO many health and wellness pyramid companies out there and costco, walmart, target etc. sell so many similar products i find it hard to believe you can make any money with this stuff anymore. there is always a cheaper version of it somewhere else. Also, i have tried all kinds of products. even ephedra when it was still legal and guess what? you guys are right….nothing works unless you are eating right and kicking butt in your workouts.
Wow, I respect SR’s right to post anything she wants on her blog, but this is officially the last time I am reading this ish. If you’re going to post an ad masked as a post, at least give your readers a disclaimer so those of us who don’t want to read it can skip it.
yeah for me. i try to be nice and help a reader out and all i get from this “ad” is people telling me they will never read again. i love blogging.
You’ve gotten 2 neg. responses so far. Why so defensive?
Every time you do something – to get even one negative response gets old. Imagine if you had a blog – you post someone’s story and the response you get from someone is ‘never going to read again’. If they have enough free time to leave that comment, I’m sure they’ll be back anyway. On another note: Danielle you look awesome!!!!!
Orrrrrrrrrr when Danielle started talking about Advocare you could of clicked close and been done with it and came back tomorrow for the regular ole epic SR sarcasm. Crazy thought.
I have such strong views on “supplements” but I’m not going to go there. Congrats to this woman for pursuing her dreams and getting fit, I think she looks fantastic. However, I just want to say 2 things: 1. placebo effect and 2. I worry about the effects of some of these supplements on the body (specifically the liver) since they are not regulated or enforced by the FDA. People need to remember that there may be risks associated before they jump on the bandwagon. That is all!
Hm. I’m going to clarify an earlier post. I didn’t love that her post became a bit of an ad at the end. But I love hearing peoples success stories. I think she looks amazing. If this works for her, then go for it. I’m certainly not going to stop reading for something like this. That’s nuts. It’s super easy to just skip the post if I don’t like it. At no point did you endorse anything. You just said hey…check this out. And…it’s your blog. Happy fishing SR.
I have to pipe in here a bit for Danielle here.. I am guessing that most of you are only runners but have never done the type of competition that she has done. Is is a lot different from running in prep. Less about miles.. more about 12-16 weeks of getting ready for one day. The type of competition she did is called a “bikini”… it is newer in that fitness world under “Figure” then there is “Fitness” and you all know about “bodybuilding”. I can’t speak about her brand of supplements, however when your getting ready for that type of show, having supplements is helpful. Even those that are “all natural” use whole foods supplements.. all bodies are different. And quite frankly, the FDA does not regulate any of them (with all the bad drugs out there having lawsuits, I don’t know if they are doing a good job on regulating anything). It seems to me that SR chose to share something on HER blog – with the mini commercial and all, because it is part of her story. The nasty comments are much harder to read than the post. Can’t we just be strong women and hi-five the gal for reaching goals instead of being in HS? Just sayin..
Yaaaaaaaay loved your positive comment! We need to support one another and facilitate “uplifting” comments…..;) happy reading….
Dam girl you look freaking amazing! Congrats on the success and thanks SR for sharing.
Thanks for honestly sharing your story, and ya’ll look great! And thanks, SR, for featuring her!
I think reading all those comments was more entertaining than the post itself
I don’t know what I liked more the post or the comments!
I personally love posts like this. No one is forcing anyone to do or buy anything. I have heard a lot about advocare and have been doing research to see if its something I really want to try. I love seeing how it worked for other people and what they actually had to do (diet and exercise) to have true success. Product reviews are definitely my favorite kind of posts!
As someone who has struggled with weight for a long time, I have truly come to realize that there is no “magic pill”
It really is a strict diet and exercise. Advocare isn’t the reason she lost weight, she worked hard. In my opinion, it seems that advocare just supplies you with tools to make it easier to make healthier choices.
And realistically, she isn’t going to look like this forever. So even more props to her for doing it now! And years from now she can look back and be proud of the accomplishments she has made!
I can’t wait to start reading your blog! And as someone who works in student ministry, I super respect what you said about not posting the pictures on your personal blog! kudos to you!
I loved this story! No I will not go out and purchase Advocare but it was great to see a successful story of someone reaching their goals. And for the negative comments I feel like SR gave a great intro/warning about how this wouldn’t be fore everyone. I respect SR for staying true to her blog, fans, and herself. I am open minded enough to hear about other people’s weight loss journey without feeling personally insulted. And it seems like 98% of the readers have the same position as me on it.
I have never tried the supplement/powders/bars plan so I can’t knock it outright. I do wonder though about how this fits into having a normal life. It’s great that her husband was on board and they were doing the same thing but what happens if your housemates aren’t on it and they bring home takeout nightly? Personally I enjoy eating, whether its making a meal with my friends or taking my nephews to a pizza parlor. I wouldn’t want ot sacrifice social eating to loose a few pounds. Also, I enjoy a type of spiritual running- going outside, clearing my head kind of deal. Lifting weights is something I do to tone but I don’t enjoy it necessarily. Its all about being happy. If micromanaging your diet with only one brand of products and going to the gym multiple times a day makes you happy, cool. Rock on. If it doesn’t, then you know what doesn’t work for you and that means you’re closer to knowing what does make you happy.
I think it is great that SR highlights blogs because I have found many of my favorites through her! That said, I was a follower of Danielle before she started all of this advocare business. Once she started it, I decided it was way too “ad like” and an obvious product push so decided not to read anymore. It wasn’t my cup of tea. No big deal. That said, I am sure it IS some people’s cup of tea or interesting to them which is why SR is right to highlight her. Different blogs will open up different opinions and appeal to different people. It is cool she highlights different variations of topics. I am however disappointed in some of the responses to comments as they were childish or unprofessional but if that the humor and who she is, so be it.
I thought this was a great post to read! I’ve read Danielle’s blog for a while now (as well as SR’s) and it was great to see the competition pics on here (Danielle, you look fantastic!)
As for the readers getting their panties in a wad about this post, just close the post and come back the following day, no need to take it to the extreme with the comments.
Very interesting and thought provoking post SR! I am interested in knowing if you would ever take Advocare for weight loss (if you needed to lose weight)?
I have no experience with diet pills, supplements, etc, but my college roommate took them for a little while and she said her heart would race and she would shake. Maybe that would help my marathon time! ha
Love your blog.
Liked this post.
Thought it was a little weird this chick got to plug her business and make money off your blog but she looks great.
I have been reading SR for over a year now and have never posted so I thought it was time! I love reading your blog… It keeps me motivated and entertained!! I think it’s great that you share others’ accomplishments!! What works for one person doesn’t work for everyone and I think it’s great that people can share what works for them! There are always going to be those people that don’t approve, but I’m glad you are always “you” and don’t change your blog for others!
Thanks again for being the one blog I continue to read!!
SR I love you and your blog and even though I don’t agree with losing weight “THAT” way, its your blog and you have the right to post whatever you want. If anything this post makes me feel good about myself for sticking to a healthy clean diet with no “pills” or other “pyramid” schemes, so Thanks
I love your Alaska adventures, can’t wait to read more about it!
Let the haters be haters! It’s your blog and you can write whatever you want, and people can read what they want.
Glad you’re having a good time in Alaska with the family!
Good for her. But this post definitely doesn’t make me want to read her blog because this reads like the most boring infomercial ever.
Most if not all of the blogs people read/write are focused on a specific subject whether it be fitness, photography, food, fashion, etc…just because they mention/talk about/ promote/crap on a product doesn’t make it an “ad”….I love SR but I can tell ya I didn’t go out and buy bic bands, gels, a Yorkie, & some Fro-yo because she said they’re fab not do I think she expects anyone to. Ever think it was just a way for her to educate/inform people on one persons experience with this product in case they too were curious? Keep on keepin on SR
I think we should all take a damn shot of tequila and shutup.
I have lots of friends that have used AdvoCare and was pumped to learn more. Thanks!
I am going to buck the trend and say THANKS for this post. Danielle is an inspiration and I’ve been considering Advocare or Herbalife, so I appreciate the information.
Thanks SR and Danielle.
In the words of the late Rodney King, “Can’t we all just get along?”
I enjoy reading your blog and find motivation in that fact that you actually eat healthy and work-out HARD. Of course you can talk about anything you want on YOUR blog, but I was disappointed to see this. We have all heard the same weight loss, pyramid scheme story before?!?! She keeps referring to it being all natural, no chemicals. Cocaine is all natural, there are natural occurring pesticides, etc. To each their own.
Hey girl! I haven’t posted in a few days (my day job really cramps my blogging! joking!) and there’s really not much else I can say here that hasn’t been said already, I just wanted to give you a little virtual high-5 from over here in the Seattle area! Just because it feels like a girl could use one.
I mentioned my church in my post on my blog yesterday and guess what? I lost my first follower today. At first I was super sad and surprised! I’ve only been blogging for a little over a month so I sort of cherish every view, comment and follower I get. But after the initial shock, I realized that I’m sure as hell not going to please everyone. I talk about my running and my marathons but I also talk about marriage equality, church, and my boobs! (for a good cause, promise). Anyway, you go girl. I love your blog even if we might not always agree on exactly the same things.
” I’m not all about a number on a scale, but since I look and feel better, and I haven’t weighed that since like 5th grade, I’m pretty pumped”
Thats scary. How tall are you? You dont seem short…
Like as in scary skinny
Can I be immature with you? I feel like the male population has a lock on that…
Also a loyal reader, but wondering if you would highlight some other running blogs you read? I’m running my first full in October and would LOVE to follow some others in a similar training cycle as I or more experienced marathoners like yourself…you rock girl!
If anyone else has suggestions hit me up at runningafterbabiez.blogspot.com:-)
Danielle – I trained for and ran my first half marathon (actually, I ran 2) this past spring which was a long time goal of mine that I was finally able to accomplish after several injuries. I experienced a similar weight gain, and am the heaviest I have ever been in my life, since I started distance running. I still love my long slow runs, and I’m still planning on doing more halves (training for a fall race now!) and someday a full because I love the challenge (like you) and how it makes me feel, but for someone who was always thin, it’s been an adjustment to become a bit heavier. I am not saying it is a bad thing, just a different thing. So I relate to your experience, and I appreciate you sharing it here. So many of the running/healthy living/fitness blogs I read are about people who have lost weight, so I find myself to be an oddball having the opposite experience, but hey, we’re all different
I also appreciate learning about what it took for you to train and prep for your competition, which is something that I don’t know much about and find interesting and enjoyed learning something new. I think your hard work and dedication to the multiple goals & accomplishments mentioned here are amazing. I don’t understand why anyone needs to belittle that outright or with back handed compliments as some of the comments have, so I just wanted to mention that I really enjoyed reading your guest post. Keep up the awesome work no matter what it is!!!
I LOVE AdvoCare! And you’re right, it totally works. My parents found out about it, became distributors and started their weightloss journey last summer. Since then they have worked extremely hard to look good for my wedding that was in March and both have lost about 60 lbs EACH!! They look amazing and feel even more amazing!
I am also a distributer but I have never done the 24 day challenge, but did do the cleanse and spark and catalyst like it was going out of style and dropped a few lbs. I want so badly to do a Challenge now since I’m a newlywed and have put on some unwanted weight. I can’t wait to be able to buy some more products when we have a little cushion.
I’m not really sure of the purpose of this post – the last third was basically an testimonial for Avocare. From a guest poster. If it was you – okay, it’s your blog and part of your story. I can gloss over it if i don’t like it. But it’s not you, it’s someone else (who apparently has her own blog?). I come here to read about you, just so you know. Maybe the fishing is really tiring so you thought this guest post would be easy to throw up….and garner comments with little work on your behalf.
you saw right through me.
i thought i made it pretty clear WHY i was posting it – to showcase what one of my readers has done. thats the reason i have reader roundup posts, thats why i started cat lady blogs, thats the reason i have guset posts and thats what 3 and a half years later i still do that. Danielle chose to write the post the way she did and its fine by me.
and the bottom line is that people want to read about weight loss, body stuff, etc. you can say you don’t but all i have to do is look at the comments and hits on this post. people are interested in the subject whether they admit it or not.
and lastly, unless you are bigger blogger, you dont understand the time it takes to keep the whole thing going with posts and answering every single email, etc. so for you to say what you did, i guess i find a little uneducated.
anywas, thanks for reading.
Thanks for responding. Sorry if i wasn’t clear, you do have reader success stories and people are interested in weight loss. But this did not read like just a reader follow-up. It was a poorly written advertisement for weight loss pills and that’s what i found confusing. There are other, better informed places to direct people interested in weight loss to read – putting this up seemed like an attempt to garner hits – which you’ve sarcastically admitted to. I’m sure it takes alot of time to work on the blog – but let’s be reasonable, it is your WORK right? You’ve chosen to do this and its gotten you some sponsors…a bit of cash from advertisements. So to call me uneducated because i don’t understand the nature of having a job is kinda uneducated. The main difference between my own and your job is i don’t have as much vacation time.
You know you can get in just as good of shape without spending all that money on pills, right? C’mon, this was a total product pushing post.
I know PLENTY of competitors that don’t use any crappy supplements…and look great.
Thanks for posting! Some people are interested in others success stories!
SR & Danielle- I think people are jealous of you both!! I know I am:-)
Love this & the progress! You did it for you and that is what matters. Congrats! Thanks for sharing. You look great by the way, and yes I’m jealous!
What supplements do you take? What fat burner do you recommend and how do you use the supplements you take ? I’m training for my first bikini competition. Also any advice for me going into my first bikini competition and training ?
Hi, im currently 6 months pregnant. i still workout but not very hard like before mainly because I dont want to risk anything and i spent the first trimester in complete exhaustion. However, after the baby is born I plan on returning full swing and need a good supplemet program. The problem is I am allergic to tuna, shrimp and shellfish. Believe it or not these ingredients are found in many nutritional supplements especially prework out powders. Do you know if this line is free of these allergens. Any info would really be appreciated.
Hey! You are an inspiration to every woman who is looking to better themselves physically.
Did you cut all alcohol out of your diet??
Thanks for the response in advance,
Sarah
Hey! You are an inspiration to all women who want to be their best- so thank you. Did you cut out all alcohol from your diet for this?
Thank you in advance,
Sarah
Danielle – Way to go girl!!!! My hubby and I are on the 24 day challenge right now. I LOVE the Spark product as well as the cleanse. Seeing your pics is a TOTAL MOTIVATOR! Thank you for posting.
I have been taking AdvoCare products for the past 2 yrs after the birth of my daughter. They have totally changed my running performance as well as helped me shed all of that post pregnancy weight!!!! It’s hard to imagine how my life would be without these products!
Hey! Congrats you look amazing. What products specifically did you use while getting ready for competition,( a typical day? ) and did you have a trainer? What was your workout plan…
Hey there,
Congratulations!! I read this a few months ago when I was researching for my own Bikini competition. I found your article really helpful and inspiring. Currently I have 4 weeks left, I have quit smoking, Lost weight, gained muscle esentially changed everything about my life in 2 and 1/2 months and its been the best thing I’ve ever done. I’m writing you because this last month has been super tough. I need to find a Fat burner, that works. Everything out there seems like such hype. Is there something you can reccomend? I cant really switch over to Avocare in the last month and already take many supplements.
Thanks,
C
