If you look at my miles tally on the right, you’ll see that I’ve run very few miles this month. In April I ran 4 marathons and an ultra relay and ended up with 307 miles, a monthly high for me. So I knew that I should take May a little easy, and when the blog decided to take a rest, it made it all the more easier for me too.
I’m going to try to not run all this week until the weekend, but we’ll see how that goes… I want to get back into taking some barre classes and try to do more core work. I have two marathons in June but nothing in May so it’s a good time as any.
BUT even though I haven’t been running, I’ve still been sweating. Mostly about John Travolta’s recent legal troubles but also some cross training: I’ve been putting time in on the upright bike, elliptical, and stairmill. <—that thing is a legit workout when you’re not draped over the handrails.
My gym has a couple different elliptical options and I like the kind (above right) where the movement is more up and down like a stair stepper. I crank up the resistance on that and get pretty dang sweaty by the end.
Yesterday for once in my lifetime I did some core work on a stability ball. I did 3 sets of 15 of the reverse bridge and the jacknife and then did a few crunches on the ball and finished with a 2 minute plank.
While I’d never kick a six pack like Dara Torres’ out of bed, my concern is having a strong core for running more than anything else.
Although abs like that for a 45 year old mom are pretty silly sick:
Besides gym time, I’ve been taking lots of walks lately which I love.
Obviously the main reason we have legs is receptacles for skinny jeans and high heels, but the second reason is to walk. It’s just relaxing and nice to be outside.
Yesterday we got caffeinated and then walked 3.3 miles in a little over an hour.
NEW GEAR
Last week I received some new shirts from 26.2 Apparel – they’re a super soft “DriBlend” shirt that’s only $15. They have that sort of old, worn in feel and look less “technical” than some of the other 26.2 shirts I own.
I really like the design of the pink shirt but love the heather grey color best. Unfortunately, I already spilled crap on my pink one and think I stained it. Why am I allowed to eat without a bib on?!
Many of you emailed me and said, I like the clothes but I’m not a marathoner and would feel like a poser wearing it… Well, 26.2 Apparel listened and now has 13.1 gear in different colors:
My shirts are size small, but they are fitted for a woman so if you prefer a looser fit, go up a size.
You can check out all the tops and colors here and they’re all only $15. Get your bad self one and we can be twinsies.

Those shirts are really cute, and I love the worn-in feel to my tshirts. Dara’s abs are insane!
Good luck with your week off running.
Hahah what if you only run a mile? Can I get a shirt for that??
I am there with ya. I took the month of April off and I am just now starting back training for my marathon debut at the Marine Corp Marathon in October… in the mean time I will be in San Diego for RNR on June 3rd for the half. I have to say getting back into it was just as hard as taking a break, go figure. It feels great to run and train again and I can tell that the break did wonders on my joints as well as my mental state, lol! Good luck on your break and your future 2 marathons. And I will try to not lose alot of sleep over John Travoltas legal issues, however its nothing a little sleeping meds cant handle!:)
Love the shirts! Those are super cute!!
I love the shirts you got – I definitely need one now!! Also, just wanted to say thank God jaymo didn’t wear skinny jeans. And finally, even if you never ran another day in your life, I would still read your blog.
I’m all about abs lately! I find running is so much easier when my abs are in shape. I love all your walks.Walking is so enjoyable and I don’t take enough time to do it!
I like that you say you aren’t running much lately. You had that monster week and basically nonstop monster months. Give yourself a break and enjoy the downtime. Happy Mother’s Day even if your baby weighs 4 pounds and needs to be kept on a leash
Those shirts are super cute!
Cute cute shirt!! You deserve a break after all those miles last month, girl! Take an easy for a week or so!
I have one of those t shirts and it is so awesome I am totally ordering another. um, are you not fishing this year? Did I miss that announcement?
no i am going for a shorter period in july. gotta pay the bills and marni refuses to contribute to the family. turd.
Everyone needs a break now and then. LOVE the new shirts.
The Kidless Kronicles
I am still being directed to the April 26 post as the home site. I can only get to the new ones via your twitter posts. I’m on a mac… is there a way to refresh? (Other than the obvious refresh browser button)
its an issue with the site, ive told my IT guys who will hopefully get it fixed tomorrow! thanks.
Hey! I can still only see your new blog posts through twitter? maybe I am doing something wrong? I cleared all of my history. It still updates on my blog and moves to the top of the list but when I click on it, it goes back to an old post.
yeah, theres an issue on my end with the domain or some crap. ive told my it guys and hopefully it will be back to normal tomorrow!
I looooove that shirt! I’ve been looking for a shirt like that for a while, and for 15 bucks?? What a steal. Thanks for recommendation
And enjoy some time off running – it really does wonders for the body and mind!
While I definitely give her massive props for the abs, I don’t think I’d want them. I think I’d prefer ones like that on my husband
Dara’s abs are insane.
I love the grey shirt and for $15, I definitely think I need it.
I’m gonna see if they have a 5K shirt for my #5Krevolution…
That stairclimber is intense! I try to do it for 60 minutes at least once a week and am always dripping in sweat when I’m done. When I went to pick Ryleigh up at babysitting once this little girl about 6 looked at me and said “you sweat too much” I took it as a compliment.
Super cute shirts!
I love walks! I can stop and look at things I never would have noticed if I was running by the same location.
And by “running” I mean jogging at a very slow pace.
I pretty much took april off as well. My body needed it. My legs needed it!! I was also on holiday for most of the time
Good on you for trying all the other exercises as well. Most people say they are bored on elliptical machines or treadmills – err.. you make your own fun right?
I find those abs just a wee bit terrifying.
Taking May for some downtime and cross training sounds like a good idea after the April you had. You deserve it!
Love the shirts…I’m so buying one! I’m glad you are taking it easy this month..that is extremely smart of you.
Love the 13.1 shirts! I haven’t taken the 26.2 plunge yet, so I’m happy they have one for half that.
Cute shirts! Maybe I will get one after my first half on Saturday
I swear the stair master is going to be the death of me one day. It.is.SO.hard
I might have missed something after you switched server do-hickies (whatever) but the link I had for you in my favorites isn’t working. I found this post via Twitter, but even from here, when I click on May posts (to see what I missed) it takes me back to April 26th. HELP!
ugh..never mind. It just made a fool of me and started working. yay!
its an issue on my end but i have my tech guys working on it so fingers crossed it will be fixed soon!
Hey there SR. I have your blog saved in my favorites but since you changed servers but the only way I can get your current posts to come up is to access it through SUAR’s link. Do I need to do something different? Are others having this problems too? Amy
i cant get to the blog either unless i go through twitter. when i type http://www.skinnyrunner.com (or click the link saved in my favs) it goes back to april 26.
sad part is it took me a week to figure it out – i thought you took a blogging hiatus, withdrawals may or may not have started to set in. nbd.
no, its an issue on my end with the new server but i have my IT guys working on it! hopefully it will be fixed soon.
ahh i love/hate the stair mill! makes me wanna pass out by the time I’m done! haha
Oh man I am lovin’ the shirts! I gotta get one of those stat!!!
Ashley and I are going to our first Barre class tomorrow night. Wheeeeee! Hope we can still walk afterwards.
What races you got goin’ on in June?! So glad you will be around a bit longer this summer
Cute shirts!! with the miles you racked up for April, you deserve the break.
I plan to focus on building up my core, too. It’s a goal I have for this summer. Excited to see if if makes a difference on my half mary time in September.
Love those tees! Would look super fab with jeans and heels or wedges. I can just imagine it!
Hi there! I love the 26.2 Apparel shirts and hope to snatch up a few. How tall you are? They look like they fit long on you, which I really like, but I want to make sure they’ll fit right on me. I hate shirts that come up short
Thank you!
I’m 5’7″. theyre not super long but not short either. but they are really comfortable.
I love 26.2 clothes! And they have great customer service. I wish they sold shirts with longer sleeves, covering most of the tricep/bicep area on the upper arm. Think they’ll make a special shirt for me?!?
