The rear washer

by SkinnyRunner on April 22, 2012

Yesterday evening we drove up to San Luis Obispo and checked into the Madonna Inn around 10pm for the SLO Marathon this morning.

We stayed here last October and I loved it, but then again, I love anything kitschy and themed.

022 (550x235)

023 (550x301)

Last night we had the “Rose Room”:

005 (306x550)

022 (500x315)

023 (500x333)

Like the hotel itself, everything was pink.  And I mean everything: the stationery, the lotion, the hotel guide, the ice bucket.

025 (500x327)

It was a handicapped room so the shower was huge.  and very pink.

002 (640x360)

003 (550x398)

Even the soap is shaped like cake.

004 (550x444)

After the 6am race (I’ll have a race recap up tomorrow) we headed downtown San Luis to find breakfast.  I Yelp’ed and found Louisa’s Place which was awesome – a family-style diner with huge homemade biscuits and big omelets.  For the record, this is the first time I’ve ever seen my man order an egg white omelet; he’s getting healthier than I am!

Then we walked around a little and checked out the stores.  This morning was foggy and overcast – perfect running weather – but then it warmed up and was gorgeous in the afternoon.

006 (550x299)

We saw Rocket Fizz Soda Pop and Candy Shop and I was pulled in by the candy sirens.  I’ve never seen so much soda and weird flavors too.

009 (550x309)

010 (550x309)

012 (550x308)

Bacon, coffee, buffalo sauce, peanut butter and jelly soda.  Weird, right?!

013 (452x550)

I played it safe and skipped the cucumber soda and went with a diet cream soda and the husband picked out some salt water taffy for each of us.  I tried to buy this skintight suit for him but he wasn’t having it.

As we were walking back to the car, I saw this gum wall – totally gross and totally intriguing at the same time.  That is all gum all the way down and the other way is the same way.

014 (292x550)015 (309x550)

Later we drove to Laetitia Winery to do a tasting because they have champagne!  And I love champagne!

I’ve been here with girlfriends and knew it was my safe place, like my second home.  My friend R is a member here so we were able to use her membership discount too on the couple bottles that we bought.

021 (550x308)

020 (301x550)

Marathon, candy, discounted champagne… is this heaven?

Afterwards we checked into another room for tonight; I decided if we were going to stay two nights we might as well see two different rooms.  And since I’m such a romantic dude, I reserved the “Anniversary Room” (we’re celebrating our 5 year anniversary this weekend a little late).

035 (268x550)

The hotel sent us a bottle of champagne to celebrate; they know the fastest way to my heart.

027 (550x309)

028 (550x299)

029 (307x550)030 (309x550)

A floral sink and rock shower, NBD at the Madonna.

And possibly the greatest invention ever…. the electric toilet.  Forget smartphones, this is the future of technology.

031 (309x550)

032 (550x296)

It has a bidet.  And I used it.  A toilet dryer is a game changer for sure.  You haven’t been living until you have everything washed and dried by your toilet.

Wow I’ve never seen hotels like that before, that’s so cool! Very unique and a nice change from the normal chain hotels. That is ALOT of pink. Whoa!

Also I NEED to go to that candy shop… looks like heaven.

Sorry to catcall you from my van today. I was in the trenches of my three boys screaching for snacks so that was the best I could do. Hope the run was good for you. I ran the half. The hills sucked big basketballs but I had a decent 1:44 time. Plus I saw a llaama. Did you see that llaama? I thought the Gu made me hallucinate. Anyhow nice to meet you/screech at you (<;

Good for J-McSkinny – his pictures show that he’s really slimmed down – quite noticible in his face. So bloody hard to do – good for him.

Ok, I definitely can’t stay in that hotel!!! Too pink in the first room and too “ancient”-ish in the second! Sorry! But I do like the toilet bowl thingy.

Hahah.. thats hilarious! You don’t really see too many bidets these days- let alone one that is electric.. or with a dryer..

You are seriously a rock star!! I have great admiration for you. I am in awe that you are still standing. Just thinking about how I feel after ONE marathon and you run them like it ain’t no thing!

I look forward to hearing a little recap about how you and your legs feel. Oh and how you are going to top this week……

Leyna Odell April 23, 2012 at 6:03 am

When we lived in Europe, there were lots of bidets. I was not a fan! But the ones I used didn’t have a DRYER, so maybe I just missing out on the complete package haha I would totally have bought all of that (presumably) disgusting soda and tried it. I tried a candy corn Jones soda (part of their Halloween sodas) and it totally turned my teeth BRIGHT YELLOW. Like neon yellow. And when I drank it, we were on our way to meet our realtor to buy our first house. It was classy for sure.

There’s a gum wall like that in Seattle too. It’s like, you know you shouldn’t touch it but you kinda want to.

Reply

Kelsey April 23, 2012 at 6:47 am

Is it weird I now want my butt washed and dried?

Reply

Meghan Rene April 23, 2012 at 8:04 am

Looks like a great time – happy anniversary and hope the marathon went well.

Now time to think about saving for one of those fancy toilets. Needed it yesterday.

Reply

Lora @ Crazy Running Girl April 23, 2012 at 8:49 am

Totally want to stay at the Madonna!!!! I first used a bidet in Japan (they also had warmers for the toilet seats which feels totally weird because it’s like someone was just sitting there before you…) and they are kinda amazing.

I’ve followed your blog for about a year now…I live in SLO and was a volunteer at Mile 9 yesterday & saw you run by! Glad you enjoyed your stay here & great job :)

Haha, I’m dying to try a bidet! Does it actually, um, do a good job?

Congrats on some killer runs so far! This is super inspiring! I’m curious to hear how recovery is going between races? Are you doing anything special? How’s the bod holding up??

Reply

Heather April 23, 2012 at 9:27 pm

Wow. I haven’t actually seen one of those toilets in the US yet. I saw them all over the freakin place in South Korea, but nothing was in English so there was no way I was gonna push any buttons, LOL. I love SLO. In fact, I’m heading there next weekend… :)
