Bargain Shopping for Fitness Wear

by SkinnyRunner on March 29, 2012

Yesterday my man lover and I took the dog for a 3 mile walk… where we ended up at TJ Maxx, naturally.  All roads lead to discount shopping.

Since I want to be consistent in taking more barre classes, I need a few more pairs of capris.  total need.

I found these two pairs at TJ Maxx, both for under $20 each.  The grey pair is by Kyodan Fitness which I guess is only sold at Marshalls and TJ Maxx.  I really liked the pink Nike pair, but they were both too small so I’m hoping I can snag a bigger size in the Nikes.

When I was at Target last weekend picking up a white sports bra, I bought this bad boy on clearance for less than $5.  The 80’s called and told me I needed it.  (These are the ones I buy)

According to Real Simple, you should replace your sports bra after about 100 wearings.  If you’re not counting (and if you are, you’ve got bigger issues), here’s 3 tips to tell if you need to say goodbye to the TaTa Tamer:

  • Perform a stretch test. Gently tug the elastic straps and band. If you don’t feel any resistance, buy a new bra.
  • Compare the old and the new. Stack a new sports bra on top of a similarly styled old one. If the old bra has a wider band and longer straps, throw it out.
  • Go with your gut. “When a sports bra loses its oomph, you risk developing motion-related sagging,” says LaJean Lawson, an exercise-science researcher at Oregon State University, in Corvallis. A sports bra provides almost twice the support of a regular bra. For a quick test, jog in place wearing a normal bra, then a sports bra. If your breasts don’t feel significantly more secure, get a new one.

Also, I think if you air dry your workout clothes that have spandex in them, they’ll last longer.  I don’t dry my compression socks or capri pants although I do machine dry my sports bras.

CLEANING UP AND MAGAZINE MADNESS

I’ve been trying to clean up a bunch of broken links and pictures that don’t show up and stuff like that on the blog which takes a buttload of time.  It might look like turdiness, but that turdiness actually takes some time.

**I added a couple more pics to the Celebricizing page.

**I also reorganized the Race Reviews page so it’s more user friendly, and I cleaned up some posts in there.  When I was doing that, I realized I’ve never run a race in June.  I must fix that. stat.

While taking a break from such strenuous blog work, I read my favorite publication and found a little Magazine Madness to share:

DSCN9334

DSCN9333

Kate Hudson looks amazing after 2 kids and only 8 months after having her second child!  I think you should get like 12 years to work off the baby weight.  Like once your kid hits high school you might want to let go of the maternity wear.

And Denise Richards working it out at Physique 57 in Beverly Hills:

DSCN9327

I went there!  I sweat where her booty is sweating!  totally besties now.

How often do you replace your workout gear, like socks and sports bras?

I admit, I never do.  I think I’m a closet hoarder who wants to be a minimalist.

Do you hand wash or air dry any of your workout clothes?

I air dry a few things … the ones that say on the tag to “air dry only.” And I’m bad about throwing out old socks. I’ll wear them around the house, and when my husband sees the holes, he begs for me to go out and buy myself new socks. He’s so good to me. ;)

I’m totally obsessed with Kyodan– they make athletic wear look cute. I buy every piece I find when its there & in my size. I don’t have those capris so, naturally, I’m going to go on a nationwide hunt to find them.

I’m really bad about not throwing away my workout clothes until the holes start showing through!

I air dry and use a special wash (Base Wash by Nikwax). I started using that on my skiing base layers and then I realized what an amazing job it did at getting the stink out, so now I do loads with just workout gear too.

Shari March 29, 2012 at 1:13 pm

Honestly, I don’t air dry any of my workout gear. Since I wash everything in cold, I want to make sure that I’ve gotten all germs out of them so I dry them all in the dryer.
When it comes to sports bras I don’t skimp on cost. I am a C-cup so those cute little compression ones that you get at Target, just don’t cut it. I fork over the big $$$ for Moving Comfort bras. You buy them in your normal bra size, so you don’t have to worry about being “in between” sizes listed on the S/M/L type. Plus they last forever. I have about 8 that I rotate through before finally giving up on one of them. Definitely worth the investment.

I air dry everything I own because I don’t own a dryer- but thats because I’m cheap- though I just say I’m being eco friendly.

TJ Maxx and Marshalls are probably my favorite places to find workout clothes. I’m pretty horrible at replacing my sports bras, but I do like to air dry a majority of my athletic wear.

Ugh this is the second time in a couple weeks that I’ve read something about replacing my sports bras. I guess I should take the hint and retire some of my sports bras to save my little ta-tas from sagging!

Amanda - ChemE Runner March 29, 2012 at 1:22 pm

I only air dry workout clothes (except 100% cotton things). It definitely extends the lifetime of the clothes and I use a simple, folding drying rack. It also reduces the electricity usage, which is cheaper for me and better for the environment. Dryers are massive electricity hogs!

I need to be so much better about the way I take care of my workout clothes. I wash and dry them, but maybe I should start to consider line drying them. Good to think about I guess.
I do try to buy new sports bras whenever I see a good sale. However, I never really throw the old ones out either.

I machine wash everything, but air dry my running skirts and running tights. My running tights are ones I bought and wore in high school (cough, 20+ years, cough)- so as you can tell, I have a hard time getting rid of things :)

I bargain shop for everything!! TJ Maxx and me = hearts and flowers. I air dry everything spandex. Bras, shirts, bottoms. All of it. I don’t know for sure that it makes it last longer but I figure it isn’t going to make it worse, nothing smells bad and I need all the help in stretching the budget in the event it does help. I go through all my clothes once but usually twice a year. Spring and Fall. If I don’t wear it or it’s looking haggard, it’s gone. Sports stuff can be spendy so I definitely get everything I can out of it. I don’t do the stretch test, etc… but you just know when it’s time to go.

Lizzie March 29, 2012 at 1:48 pm

Luckily my washing machine has a “hand wash” setting, so I “hand wash” things without having to actually wash them by hand. It’s crucial. If I tried to actually wash something by hand, it would still be dirty.

Reply

Mandi @ Miles and Mascara March 29, 2012 at 1:52 pm

I usually don’t replace. I just keep buying and slowly stop wearing the old stuff…but I’m terrible about not getting rid of it because “it still fits and I might want to stop doing laundry so often.” And because I’m weird.

I also machine wash everything but air dry all of my sports bras and dry everything else on low heat.

Reply

Katelin @ HealthyFatKid March 29, 2012 at 1:53 pm

I machine wash cold as well as air dry ALL of my workout gear. Why? Because I’m a tightwad and want them to last as long as the possibly can. Does that make them last longer? No clue…. but I’ll probably keep doing it anyways.

Reply

Marcy April 2, 2012 at 7:20 am

I haven’t tried the compression ones, but the regular C9 Target ones don’t offer much support. And I don’t have a lot of chest action. A friend of mine likes the ones with the spaghetti straps and thinks they do the trick for her. But chances are, if you’re asking about support, they probably won’t work for you.

*this entry sponsored by Lululemon….not really, but it’s what I wear, pretty much head-to-toe, for running.

Machine wash cold, no fabric softener (depletes the sweat wicking properties in the material), hang dry. Every time. Even the stuff they tell me can go in the dryer.

I try to replace sports bras at least once a year, which is definitely way more than 100 wears…and I’ve only got two sports bras right now because I’m breastfeeding my last child and I’m not spending a bundle of cash on a bunch of bras that I’ll only be using for a little while longer – have you SEEN how much sports bras cost for well-endowed women?! Son-of-a I’m glad I get to go back to reasonably-priced bra sizes soon.

Reply

Stevie March 30, 2012 at 8:46 am

What bras are you wearing??? I have two of the Alene (I think??) bras that were $70 each!!! I am still nursing, too, and would love a SUPER supportive (read: 32 F!!) sports bra. Right now I am wearing the $70 bra with a target bra AND shelf tank on top.

Reply

fionarwbl March 29, 2012 at 2:52 pm

That is not what I looked like doing Physique57. Sigh.

I only airdry my winter soft fleecy things. Everything else goes into the dryer, but I do dry my “wicking” stuff separately with no fabric softener so that it stays “wicking”.

I was considering writing the date I buy them on my sports bras to give me an idea when to toss them. Too ADD?

Kyodan is my favorite, favorite workout wear…now the whole world is gonna know. Thanks a lot!!! ;)
It fits great, looks great, doesn’t sag and always bargain priced at Marshall’s & TJ Maxx.

My chest is about as flat as the day is long, so I don’t need a whole lot of support up top. I do try to replace the sports bras when the band gets loose. My chiropractor told me I should “struggle” a bit to get it on, that’s how I know it’s still working correctly.

I put everything in the dryer except my compression stuff (sleeves); then it sits in a heap on the sofa (with my kids clothes) until we need something. Yep, I’m one of those moms. :-/

Thanks SR…have a great day!

I am much more careful with my workout stuff, I could care less about anything else (clothes-washing related. I am not THAT heartless)

Oh hell, I haven’t replaced my sports bra’s in maybe a year..and I wear them daily. I dry them in the dryer, but air dry my pants. It’s all a game of roulette for my workout (and non workout) clothes.

Oh my gosh! Replacing them? Ha! I think I still have a sports bra from high school. I throw out socks when they get holes in them, and that is about it. I seriously need to go shopping. Like now :) I should really go check out TJ Maxx or Ross for workout clothes. I sometimes just get SO overwhelmed when I walk in there that I feel like I can’t breathe – just too much stuff to look at and dig through. I’m not good at that. Better start though, because workout gear is expensive!!

Love the hot pink Nike capris! I just bought a hot pink sports bra from Target yesterday to replace my old ones that crackle when stretched. They should add that as a sign you need a new sports bra.

In addition to air drying all workout clothes, I try to wash all the workout clothes together so the fabric doesn’t get stracthed and lint doesn’t stick to it.

I air dry most of my workout clothes after a quick 3 minute machine drying (to get out wrinkles). I would hate for any of them to accidentally shrink in the dryer.. and those clothes aren’t too cheap to replace! Plus I think it helps maintain the freshness of the all the dri-fit type materials for longer.

I never replace my jog bras! I had one bra for five years before I started running (gym only) but even now I put in maybe 1500-2000 miles a year and my bras are four years old or more. I probably need new ones. I wear cheap Fruit of the Loom cotton bras and Walmart running socks – they last for years and they’re a bargain.
