Before and After: weight loss

by SkinnyRunner on March 6, 2012

WORKOUT – TM run

13.55 miles/1:43

1.0 incline

I always break up my treadmill runs into parts and vary the speed so I don’t get bored.  So the first part is always 65 minutes – the max amount of time before the treadmill resets (60 mins and then the 5 min coold own).

8.4 miles – 65 mins  (7:44 pace)

Then the next part is usually to 10 miles since that’s the distance I normally run.  Today I did 15 minutes to hit a little over 10 miles.

2 miles – 15 mins     (7:30 pace)

At this point I stopped and decided what to do; I was at 10.4 miles/1:20 and would normally call it a day, but I decided to finish up with a couple more to make 13.

I had been watching TV up until now but turned on my ipod for the last few miles.

3.15 miles – 23 mins     (7:18 pace)

SAY MAYBE TO THE DRESS?

And the dress search continues… Yesterday I showed you the first round of dresses I picked out and Alyssa, bless her heart, mentioned a lace dress at H&M. What?! I raced outta the house faster than Paul Revere on horseback with a far more important mission.

Success!  And only $29.95!

The one on the left is a smaller size; it’s shorter and the one on the right is baggier and longer.

I ended up buying the smaller size, but when I tried it on for the husband, he was like, It looks good but it’s short.  So now I’m having second thoughts.  or third thoughts by now.

Nordstrom didn’t have the lace dress I wanted so I’m going to go to another location today and look for it.  Honestly, if I had put this much effort into my education or welp, anything at all, I would have been running the country by now.

FUNGUS FEET

Speaking of getting purdy, when I was in Arizona last week, we had a Spa Day for my mom’s birthday and I had a mani/pedi.  I rarely get manicures but I liked it so much, I decided that I should start painting my own nails and save a couple bucks.  pure genius, I know.

65hhuu

When I was at Target yesterday I picked up a Sally Hansen top coat for $3 and with that, deemed myself a professional nail tech.  Dermstore sent me a hot pink Essie polish and a black butter LONDON polish awhile ago, and secret’s out: I haven’t worn another color on my toes since.

DSCN8766

I’m gonna make black toenail polish my signature because I think it’s sorta funny to be a runner, have black toenails and then cover them up with black toenail polish

I should probably go buy a sense of humor.

I love the butter LONDON polish, by the way, and I want it in 47 colors.

BEFORE AND AFTER: WEIGHT LOSS

I want to share another reader’s story today about her weight loss transformation because it’s pretty amazing and inspiring.

Lindsay N, the BEFORE:

skinny_runner

I gained a little more than 30lbs during my first few years of marriage. After being overweight for 5 years, I was tired of being self conscious and decided after many failed diets that I was going to lose the weight once and for all.

I started out slowly by limiting fast food and soda, cooking at home and reading healthy living blogs for healthy menu ideas.  I also started walking a lot and began the Couch to 5k program with my cousin.  By making these small changes, I quickly began losing and after a few months I decided I needed to kick up my workouts.

I started working out 6 days a week: I go to a local boot camp class 4/5 days a week and kickboxing twice week.  I also continue to run and have recently ran in 4 local 5k’s and have PR’d in each race!!  I have totally changed my lifestyle!  I stay active, eat healthy (with the occasional cheat meal) and love every minute!

My most important weight loss tip is to have a support group of friends and family! It is great to have a group of friends who are all working to achieve the same goal and are there to support each other.  We work out together, celebrate milestones together, and encourage each other when we are having a hard time staying on track.

I struggle daily with either not wanting to workout or wanting to eat the darn chocolate cupcake!!  Sometimes I do give into temptation, and the feelings of guilt and loss of self control are just not worth it to me anymore.  The weight loss journey is not easy, but in the end it is worth it!!”

  And the AFTER:

100_0455-001

“My friend Erin on the left has lost 90lbs by attending Weight Watchers meetings, working out, and running.  Randi, in the middle, has recently began running and attending boot camp and is losing tons of weight as well.”

Does Lindsay (and her friends!) look amazing or what?!  I had to double check and ask which gal she was in the picture because she looks so different.  Congratulations Lindsay and keep up the great work!  And I like your shirts :)

The Roundup

**Wanna see ridiculous?  Go check out my friend CatasTrophy Wife and what she did for a birthday party.  She’s OTT.

dsc02541_thumb_thumb2

I take an extra big breath to toot my own horn when I make Christmas cards (and I didn’t even do that this year, Jaymee did) and here CTW goes all homemade Cupcake Wars for a one year olds birthday. jealous.

**Go tell my homieJanae congratulations on her pregnancy!  And if you haven’t, you can VOTE for both of us for the Best Running Blog or some of the other fabulous nominees.

Reader Runners

Love the H&M dress. But more importantly, what shoes will you wear with either of the lace dresses? :-)

Way to go, Lindsay and friends!! I was inspired to begin getting in shape by my oldest son. When he deployed to Afghanistan with his USMC unit, he challenged me to run a race with him when he came home….and he PROMISED me he would come home. Come home he did, train I did, and run WE DID!!! Lost 85 pounds to date!! I’ve got before and after pics….just don’t know how to load them…lol……

PS: I LOVE the little white dress….you’ve got the legs, show them off, Sista!!

SkinnyRunner March 6, 2012 at 10:53 am

WOW, congrats to you and your son! and thanks to him for his service!!

I love the dress from H&M! It’s short, but with the longer sleeves, it evens out the look. I like it a lot (as in I may go buy myself one now… :) ).
And I love how you’re going about your runner’s toenails. It’s almost comical how bad our feet look at all times! I always tell people I usually only have 7-8 toenails on average :) .

Reply

Rachelle March 6, 2012 at 10:46 am

I always break my treadmill runs up the same way. It somehow makes it less mind numbingly boring.

Love the dress! Keep it, Jaymo is just going blind in his old age. ha! It looks great on you. :)

Reply

lisa@thedailyrundown March 6, 2012 at 10:46 am

I love that dress your legs are amazing, go for short.
And you know they say if your covered up top you can show some leg and vice versa, so you are good to go.
And if I could do what CatasTrophy Wife did for a birthday party I’d be rich bc I’d have a business or at least popular bc I would have the best parties!

Jenn @ RunItMyWay March 6, 2012 at 10:48 am

I love the H&M dress too – if I had legs like yours I’d totally be showing them off!! Haha I’d probably just wear little booty shorts everywhere :) How do YOU feel in the dress? If you’re uncomfortable or self-conscious then maybe bring it back. But I think you look amazing in it, and if you feel good then don’t worry what anyone else thinks!!

Reply

Wendi @ A Southern Yogi March 6, 2012 at 10:48 am

I like the smaller size too but I agree it might be short but you look nice in it – so who cares!

Lindsay looks amazing!!! Great job!

Reply

Angela @ Happy Fit Mama March 6, 2012 at 10:55 am

I like the shorter dress. Just don’t forget to be a lady! :)

Great reader stories. Lindsay looks awesome! I love Amy’s picture. Who knew a race photographer could actually get a cute picture?

Reply

Katie @ msfitrunner March 6, 2012 at 10:55 am

I don’t think the H&M one is too short, it’s short, but you can pull it off! Especially with the long sleeves. I thought the one shoulder lace nordstrom dress looked too short. That H&M one looks fantastic on you:-) Go for it!
I am totally burnt on those long treadmill runs! They are such great “mental” training that I still try to do at least an hour at a time. Great run!

Reply

Lora @ Crazy Running Girl March 6, 2012 at 11:01 am

That dress is adorable!!! I love H&M.

Brittany *Sparkles* March 6, 2012 at 11:03 am

Great Job Lindsay!!!!!!!!!!!!!! (and friends!)

Loving the white lace dress!! if it feels short can you just wear tights? I guess you can’t do that as easily in Cali where it’s always warm weather lol

Loving the bright pink nails – bring on Spring!!!!!

I love that dress! Will you have to sit at this function? If no, you’re all set! If yes…. Can you sit without flashing the world? If yes, then it’s not too short! And that’s all the fashion advice I have to offer. You’re welcome! :-)

I’m still loving the grey polish from your manicure with your mom.

Lindsay’s story is pretty awesome!

Black is my favorite nail polish color of all time— GREAT for runner’s toes I agree.

I love the H&M dress and I’d go for the smaller one! I was watching the Bachelor woman tell all and I think Chantal was wearing the dress in the picture with you and jaymo on your logo. The whole time I was thinking, that’s SR’s dress from Hawaii I think?? And yes I’m aware how creepy that is ;)

Reply

Sarah March 6, 2012 at 11:36 am

I just ran the Gasparilla Half in Tampa this weekend also! It was my first!! A girl passed me wearing an SR shirt! In reference to your black toenail mention, I also got my first one of those too! Lol Pic is posted on my blog!

psh. I like the smaller one, anyway. that’s what I would’ve gone with.

GLAD TO BE YOUR KNIGHT IN SHINING (lace dress). ;)

Reply

Cinnamon @ eatpraytri March 6, 2012 at 11:47 am

that dress is off the chain! And I can’t believe I just said that, but anyway…black nail polish…BRILLIANT. I might have to steal that b/c it is just too good of an idea.

Reply

Erin March 6, 2012 at 11:53 am

When I get black toenails, I always ALWAYS put dark nail polish on them!

However… when I lose those nails… I have to convert to very pail nail polish to not point out the fact that a nail is actually missing :)

heather @ run eat play March 6, 2012 at 11:59 am

I love that lace dress – you can totally pull off the shortness of it!
I love that last picture of the girls skipping! I think i’m going to try that for my next race!

Reply

Sierra @ Posh Meets Pavement March 6, 2012 at 12:20 pm

Agreed with all the above comments on the lace dress. You look fabulous. I like a short dress because I feel like it hits my thighs in a small part. Possibly in my head, but that’s what the mirror seems to tell me. I think I read it somewhere in a magazine too.

Amazing weight loss. I love that they are wearing your shirts! Think of how many people you inspire to RUN!

Kristen @ notsodomesticated March 6, 2012 at 12:23 pm

I love the lace dress. Your husband probably (I’m guessing here) doesn’t know what’s “in fashion” right now. I know sometimes my husband questions things just because he doesn’t know what it’s “supposed” to look like, you know? But I think you look great!

Reply

Lena @Fit on the Rocks March 6, 2012 at 12:30 pm

I actually have that lace dress from H&M and have received TONS of compliments on it in person. Warning though, the dress will make your arms look uber fat in a lot of pictures (not the ones you took with your arms in front of you). I looked through some pictures from girls night last week, and the belled out sleeves decided to add 10 lbs to my pictures lol. It is short, but I think you’re good with it! It’s one of my fave new ones…minus the photos of me in it.

Reply

Geraldine March 6, 2012 at 12:37 pm

The smaller lace dress is beautiful. I want one now. And it’s not too short! The hubbs is always going to say that anyway ;-)

Reply

Meggie March 6, 2012 at 12:57 pm

What an awesome weight loss story.

Two things I have to learn how to do: run on a treadmill without wanting to jump off within 10 min and paint my own nails without getting the polish everywhere.

Reply

Annette@EnjoyYourHealthyLife March 6, 2012 at 12:58 pm

WOW, that lace dress is pretty!

And how cool those gals are losing weight and feeling awesome. LOVE it.

Reply

Amy March 6, 2012 at 2:24 pm

I am a new reader. Love your blog. The dress is darling on you, I hope someday I can rock a dress like that!

Question for you…
I am new at running.
When I run on the treadmill I feel great and can go quite a while.
When I run outside I can’t go very long before I am dying and my legs are about to fall off! I know the incline varies and even my speed but will this eventually pass? Any tips?

Thanks!

Reply

SkinnyRunner March 6, 2012 at 2:27 pm

slow your pace down when you’re outside. take it slow and easy to go farther.

and then on the treadmill, ramp up the incline a little to offset the perpetual motion thing/no wind resistance, etc.

Reply

Maggie March 6, 2012 at 2:47 pm

i’m so impressed with your ability to run that much all on the treadmill. you go girl!

Reply

Shay @ Whine Less, Breathe More March 6, 2012 at 3:26 pm

Cute dress!!

Congrats Lindsay! You should be so proud of yourself!

Reply

Lindsay March 6, 2012 at 3:53 pm

I’d go with the shorter dress. I think it is suppose to fit that way, and p.s., you have rockin legs, so make some hoes jealous, k? The hubby just doesn’t want others googling over his girl :-)

Reply

Allie March 6, 2012 at 4:16 pm

Love the lace dress! If you’re still on the hunt, try Zara- they’ve had some adorable lace dresses in the past few months! I got one for $59 and loved it so much I bought the shirt version too :)

Amy @Macncheesenpeas March 7, 2012 at 8:43 am

two things:
1. Love the h&M dress! Did you do the sit down test? If you can sit down and not show the world your goods, I’d say its a go.
2. That weight loss story is so inspirational! I love when people can turn their life around like that!

Reply

samantha March 7, 2012 at 9:00 am

Although you look great in either dress … if you like the length on the looser one why not have it tailored to fit more snuggly (*yes I started sewing classes and I’m thinking of tailoring all my stuff now) … Thanks again for your entertaining and informational post btw! I look forward to them daily! :D

Reply

Emilia March 7, 2012 at 9:27 am

I agree with the gal who said to wear the dress with tights (or maybe your red skinny pants? maybe that’d be too much?). I also agree with the people who said it’s fine that it’s short because you are covered on top–but if you are going to be self-conscious about it, go with tights.
