The World’s Best Burger

by SkinnyRunner on March 4, 2012

WORKOUT – Ran

10.25 miles/1:32

easy, recovery miles with a few hills, no music

I felt much less sore today because I iced last night and stretched for about 20 minutes  this morning.  My JLO still feels like it took a beating – must have been those burpees, squat jumps, lunge jumps and all that barre work on Friday.

Or maybe it was the late night froyo in pajama pants, compression socks and flip flops that got me back to 100% awesome.

On a side note, socks and sandals look good on exactly no one.  Don’t try it at home… or worse, in public.

DSCN8714

It’s pretty warm here in SoCal today so I decided to wear a hat to keep the sun out of my eyes.  I never wear hats while running, but figured today was the day to start taking some big risks in life.

DSCN8717

The hat is from the Carlsbad Marathon and the top of it is mesh so your beautiful highlights can breathe.  Thank goodness, right?  I put my ponytail through the hole and took off running.
DSCN8724

If you’re running in humid weather or if it’s misty/rainy out, you might want to braid your ponytail.  If you’re not down with the braid, put another band in the bottom of your hair or even a heavy leave-in conditioner.

Otherwise your hair might end up in a rat’s nest.  Mine would never do think of doing that.  never.

After running and church (where we talked about sex, I love church), we went to Knowlwood Restaurant for lunch.  You know Knowlwood, right?  I mean, it is “Home of the World’s Best Hamburger Since 1957”.

DSCN8725

There’s a few different locations around the OC and JJ had been wanting to try it out and see what the world’s best looked like.

DSCN8728

I didn’t know this and just read it online, but each location is themed differently: this location is the “Classic Hollywood Stage”.  Others are a Historic Blacksmith Shop, WWII Gas Station, Old Train Station and an Old Red Farming Barn.

DSCN8729

It was kinda cute, but the whole place looked like it needed a remodel and a deep cleaning in a bad way.  Like if someone said, Hey this place is 50 years old!  I’d go, Only 50?!  The peach colored paint had its’ 75th birthday ten years ago.

DSCN8730

I had the Baby’s Best Burger, a smaller version of their burger, and a side salad.

DSCN8731

The burger was pretty darn good, the salad was just average, but our bill was only $12 for 2 burgers, a drink and a side salad.  sweet.

DSCN8726

We might go back since it’s pretty cheap, but Jaymo wants to try The Counter in Irvine, another burger joint.  I’ve been once and it’s more upscale but very good.

Where’s the best (or even just consistently good) burger you’ve had?  Fast food, sit down or gourmet?

I think 5 Guys makes a killer burger and fries for fast food, and I really liked Holsteins in Vegas, but their burgers start at $13.50.

untitled

After lunch we had to go to a couple golf stores… this is what I thought of that… grump city.

I love Knowlwood and In ‘n Out–they’ve always been consistently good. I also liked the burger place in Harrah’s (KGB) but saw you didn’t. I just liked the flavor combination of what I had there.

you look cute in the hat!!

my favorite burger joint is either Five Guys or Fuddruckers!

Kristen @ notsodomesticated March 4, 2012 at 3:48 pm

1. You look exactly like me when my husband wants me to join him during anything golf-related.
2. My hair did that rats’ nest thing several times last summer when running. It took about 20 minutes to brush my hair out after. Horrible!

At the start of your post I thought to myself if she mentions 5 guys I am going to have a really hard time resisting going there for supper. We will see if I am successful.

I just looked at The Counter website and I am guessing you are going to love that place. Based upon the fact you can get your burger in a bowl with no bun. Can’t wait for the review.

I trekked up to Sweet Frog (Virginia’s version of your fro yo joints) in my PJs last night too…..

Great fuel for my 14 mile run this morning.

Jina @ Behold the Turtle March 4, 2012 at 3:55 pm

I’ve had the rats’ nest hair. No fun.

My favorite burger spot is Five Guys.

Reply

kari @ running ricig March 4, 2012 at 4:03 pm

I generally wear my hair in a bun to run, because curly hair is a disaster after any kind of running.

I haven’t had a burger in like 13 years, so I have no idea.

I love The Counter. I like getting my burger on English muffins. It’s fun to pick out all the toppings and have it made to order. I’m dying to try Unami Burger too.

Serena March 4, 2012 at 4:49 pm

I haven’t had a burger in forever. I am now officially craving!

Ricole Runs March 4, 2012 at 4:54 pm

I love 5 Guys, especially their fries. I have never understood the appeal of In n Out, I think their fries suck, and lets face it, I’m just there for the fries!

Reply

Amanda March 4, 2012 at 4:56 pm

I love Red Robin’s whiskey barbecue burger! I haven’t had it in almost a year, because, well, lets face it… The burger alone is probably a million and twelve calories. But now that I’m remembering how delicious it is, I’m so tempted to forget the calories!!

Holly @ Pink Runner March 4, 2012 at 4:58 pm

I just started braiding my ponytail because my hair is getting really long and I was starting to get whip-lash when I run :)

Reply

amy March 4, 2012 at 5:03 pm

Fuddruckers is my fave, but we don’t have one close to us, so it has to be a treat when we go on vacation. I need to try Five Guys! :-)

Jen March 4, 2012 at 5:11 pm

2 answers:

1) In–N-Out, and
2) Any burger that is cooked for me. Because hey, more time for me to watch Storage Wars. Thanks.

Reply

Angela @ Happy Fit Mama March 4, 2012 at 5:17 pm

When I wear a hat, I always braid my hair(if it’s long enough). The nest afterwards is a pain in the butt.

Hope the rest of your day was more thrilling than hitting up golf stores. :)

Diablo Burger in Flagstaff, AZ. I want to go to Flagstaff just for that. And to develop more red blood cells since it’s at altitude.

I would love to find a way to keep my hair from turning into a rats nest while running. The only time this happens is when a) its not humid (rare over here) or b) I don’t wash my hair so its really greasy (worked for the nyc marathon).

Reply

Gillian March 4, 2012 at 5:28 pm

My favorite burger is Father’s Office in LA (Santa Monica and Culver City locations) but Umami Burger is a close 2nd!

Reply

Heather@Just a Colorado Gal March 4, 2012 at 5:28 pm

I love wearing hats when I run because A) it keeps the wispy hairs off my face and B) my fam keeps telling me I’m in the sun too much and I’m gonna have a grandma face soon :) I’m trying to stave off all this high-altitude sun as much as possible, so hats are great for keeping it off my face while running. I even leave a visor on my cycling/mtn biking helmet for the same reason!

What kind of former Alaskan are you!? Arctic Roadrunner in Anchorage seriously has the best burgers ever. They’ve been there forever and I just love them!

In Minneapolis there is an irish pub called Kierans Irish Pub that makes a killer chickpea wild rice burger–yes, it’s no beef, but it’s a massive burger that tastes delish from the spices and combo of ingredients!

Loved Holsteins!

We have a local joint called Bunz that makes me pretty happy.

I’m a vegetarian, but my favorite is the Bleu Ribbon Burger, sub Boca patty, from Red Robin. “Basted with a tangy steak sauce and topped with crumbled Bleu cheese. Served with crispy onion straws, lettuce, fresh tomatoes and zesty chipotle mayo on an onion bun.” Oh so good!

Lena @Fit on the Rocks March 4, 2012 at 6:43 pm

I think I need to find a running hat just to prevent the sweat from nastily pouring down my face in the warmer weather. In terms of best burger place, I can probably pick more than 5 because Denver has an ass-load of burger joints, especially gourmet.

Lisa @ Yo Momma Runs March 4, 2012 at 6:54 pm

Love Five Guys too, but when I’m traveling, I always stop at Hardees (is it Carls Jr. out west?). We have been making fun of them lately because their Six Dollar Burger now actually costs about $6. That’s too much mula for fast food.

Reply

SkinnyRunner March 4, 2012 at 8:19 pm

yep its carls jr out here and i remember in college when the $6 burger came out and it was such a good deal. ha, now like you said, it really is $6.

Hacked off the locks after getting tired of the rat nest and 20 lbs of water it held while running. Gotts in the San Francisco ferry building has great burgers and milkshakes, fries are ok. Have had better.

Reply

stephanie March 4, 2012 at 7:27 pm

my ponytail did that after my first marathon. i wore a beanie and put my hair through the hole. it rained all day and by the time i finished my sister thought i would have to cut my hair out of the hat! i conditioned that rats nest a good 5 minutes before touching it with a brush

I too am from Washington state (hubs is from Bellingham and I’m from Toledo (yes, in Washimgton) but we’re residing in lovely Graham now). I LOVE a good cheeseburger, like really really love, so I’ve tried a few in the area. I know you travel to Portland sometimes…. on the way at exit #59 is a place called Mrs. Beesleys Burgers. It’s a mom and pop joint but SO good! They have burgers with special sauce that are my favorite (and not just because I worked there while in Hugh school). :) Next time you’re in WA and in that area try it!
Love your Blog and read everyday! :)

I love that you posted about burgers! My whole blog is dedicated to running and burgers. Best burger I’ve had in Charlotte is from kickstand. You should definitely try it if you’re ever in the area :)

I really like the junior burger from The Hat. I get them to add the sauce & veggies that they put on the regular burger and it is tasty.

Have yet to try Five Guys although there is one like 5 minutes from my house so I better get on that…

Reply

Christine @ BookishlyB March 4, 2012 at 8:29 pm

I like The Counter, but I think it’s mostly because they let you check off all those boxes on the ordering pad. I’m a sucker for those… Control freak, much? :)

Reply

Jen March 4, 2012 at 8:49 pm

I don’t eat meat, but I love veggie burgers and the occasional grilled cheese. The Counter and The Habit have really good veggie burgers and I love In n Outs grilled cheeses.

I love your shirt!

There’s a chain of restaurants in North Carolina (near home) called The Cook Out Grill. You can’t go inside, it’s double drive-thru type of place, but some of the restaurants have a walk up window with a few tables set up. You can get anything on your burger and they have every type of milkshake. I tried the Hi-C milkshake as a dare once…it was actually good.

Reply

SkinnyRunner March 5, 2012 at 6:39 am

double drive through? interesting.

Samantha March 4, 2012 at 10:01 pm

I just got to the point where I need to braid my hair – always thought it would bug me by slapping around on my back but after the rat’s nest I had to deal with yesterday, it’s definitely time. Hands down, best burger EVER is the bacon cheeseburger from Hodad’s in Ocean Beach (San Diego). Next time you’re here for a race you should go – no better way to refuel than an amazing burger and chocolate shake!!

Cyndi March 5, 2012 at 3:22 am

Love hats. I wear one on every run (excet the treadmill of course!). I’m not a burger person, but my husband said Five Guys is pretty tasty, as well as Red Robin. My daughter likes my homemade burgers best!

Reply

Kathy March 5, 2012 at 3:40 am

OK…My HAIR totally looks like that after being “misted” on or in humidity. (We share a rat’s nest look…groovy!) ha!

I love the tables at the rest….looks so comfy to be able to rest your feet at the right height. (Your hubby did a nice job modeling that..again…ha!)

Golf stores…golf magazines…golf web sites…the GOLF Channel…UGH!!!! Unless its the Masters….YEA!! (However if we are out on the course and the weather is perfect, I am driving the cart, and we have a cold one to drink….then golf is priceless! ;-)

I have long curly hair and seem to always end up with dreadlocks after my runs! The only solution I have found is to wear a hat and loop my ponytail thru the hole and tuck it back up. You look great in a hat!
We have a place here in Delaware called cheeburger cheeburger and it is very good also.. The have massive salads with over 40 free toppings!

I love Smash burger and their fried pickles just take it over the top. Not sure if they have them in Cali yet but there are a few here in AZ. Next time you are here you gotta check them out and get a cheese burger from here http://www.lagrandeorangepizzeria.com/
Actually, everything from there rocks!! I dream about their salads.

Best burger is at Port of Call in New Orleans on Esplanade. They are so thick and juicy and delicious! The menu has 2 things: burger or steak. No fries, they come with baked potatoes. Perfect hangover food after a crazy night out on Bourbon St.

Shannon March 5, 2012 at 8:29 am

The Counter = must go! I always want to try new things, but end up building my same, fantastic creation each time! Fries are B.O.M.B. (especially the sweet potato fries).

Islands is pretty darn good as well! Had one this weekend and devoured the whole thing as I hadn’t had food in 8 hours; didn’t regret one bite.

Haven’t been to Five Guys, but soon…soon!

Haha, we drive by Knollwood in Irvine every other day and laugh at their “World’s Best Burger” slogan. Which one did you go to? If it’s that cheap, we might have to try it.

The Counter is across the street from our place and watch out, the premium $ you pay to customize your burger adds up quickly. After you put all your favorite ingredients on it, the burger costs $13-$18 and it’s just okay tasting, nothing special in my opinion. Also, avoid Fri – Sun afternoon, crazy packed! Best times are Sun night – Thurs.
