I’m a sweaty ballerina

by SkinnyRunner on January 27, 2012

WORKOUT – Xtend barre class – 60 mins

Ran on TM – 7.1 miles/ 60 mins   1. incline

This morning I went to a 6am Xtend barre class in Mission Viejo with reader Bri who had invited me.

I have taken one Physique 57 class and that’s it – no pilates, yoga, or anything else so I was pretty green and fresh but up for whatever.

DSCN7991

I loved this class.  It’s a mix of a little of everything and it is hard!  We used weights, we did some dance-type movements with the barre, we worked our cores on the mat, then stretched, and the whole class went by really fast.

DSCN7992

What I especially liked is that I was sweating; when we were at the barre doing squats, plies and all that jazz, my face was dripping.  You know I’m a cardio queen so I liked that I felt like not only were my muscles quivering but I was sweating too.

Of course, I had to go run a little afterwards; running makes me less crazy.

Thanks Bri for inviting me!

You can read Bri’s review of the class; she has done a LOT of different barre classes so girl really knows her stuff.

I’m going to look around and try to find a deal and buy a month package or something to Xtend barre because I liked it that much and it should count for strength training, right??

Do you take barre classes?  What’s your favorite class you take?  Any classes you don’t like?

I love Boot Camp and Spinning. Once I got over the whole sore crotch thing…Spinning is my favorite! There is one class, Hip Hop Hustle i think, that I am not coordinated enough to do! Oh, and I also LOVE LOVE LOVE Zumba!

Ahhhhh sounds awesome. I have been wanting to take a Barre class but I am kinda scared to go by myself. Maybe I can convince Chacha or Ashley since they live close.

Do you mind if I ask where you are finding the deals? I’m so interested in trying the class and live in the area. Any info you have would be so appreciated. Thanks in advance!

I love barre classes! I just found on near me. My legs were shaking so bad the first time doing all those plies! Made me realize that maybe my running legs aren’t so strong ;) Also, love Tabata.

I haven’t taken a Barre class but I used to dance in a professional ballet company-does that count?

Emily January 27, 2012 at 9:53 am

I have taken one at Pure Barre and yes it was hard! It is a good work out! I took one at the gym Equinox (had a three day pass) yesterday called Barre Burn that was really good too!

I am extremely uncoordinated and lack rhythm… do you think it would be a good fit for someone like me?

Reply

Torrey January 27, 2012 at 10:24 am

YES! No rhythm needed! I love them and I am no miss graceful.

Never taken a Barre class eventhough I would love to … but I never have time to get to a gym … now heading over to Bri’s to take a look at her review.

My coworkers have been on a Pure Barre kick, but it’s so freakin expensive that I haven’t jumped on the bandwagon quite yet. I love bootcamps and BodyPump (for the first week or so before it gets crazy repetitive).

Those classes look like fun, they seem to be popping up all over the place right now. My favorite all time class was years ago when I used to go to LA Boxing, loved it! Such a great workout and I would show up to work the next day sitting in a meeting with red knuckles, I looked hard core.

I survived one pure barre class. It was insane. I loved it. I need to go back sometime.

That sounds like a lot of fun! I used to do a lot of yoga and spin, but now classes kind of irk me. I always rather be running. The worst class I ever took was a hip hop class on a whim with some friends. It was supposed to be “beginning/intermediate.” Turns out that particular instructor hates beginners and teaches it more like advanced. We looked ridiculous the whole time. Terrible.

It should totally count as strength training! I’ve wanted to try a class, but they are pretty expensive and very popular in these parts, so you spend a lot of $$$ and sometimes can’t get into a class -

I’ve been dying to try a Barre class, but once again, we seem to be behind the times here. The few classes I’ve found don’t fit in my schedule, but I’ll keep trying to find one! Thanks for your review.

I take pure barre classes! I absolutely love them, but I only go when I can get a groupon for them!

I have a friend who does barre and swears it has made such a difference to her body. Go for it if you like it! I went to my first one during christmas time. My muscles were quivering also.

stephanie January 27, 2012 at 10:43 am

I’ve only done barre work outs that I get from on demand. And I must say, my legs were shaking by the end. It was all standing work and you use the back of a chair as your barre.

I take a yoga class at my gym at 5am on Friday mornings. I enjoy it since its all of my running friends in the class. I don’t feel ackward or weird trying to get into the various poses and can laugh at each other when we fall over.

That sounds so fun! I’ve never taken a barre class. Will definitely have to try it.

I live in S. FL, where we are the LAST to get anything!! I mean like cupcake shops just popped up in the last 2 years. I would definitely try that class.

Bri @ ShapedforFitnesss January 27, 2012 at 3:34 pm

Where in south FL do you live? Xtend Barre started in Boca Raton and they have a bunch of studios down there.

In Ft. Myers. Right across the alley!

If you ever have the chance to visit Corepower Yoga (I think there are several in CA)— I would highly recommend their Yoga Sculpt class. Yoga + free weights = brand new butt.

I would love to take one of these if they had one in my area.

Sounds way fun. I love doing Yoga, Booty, Ballet so I’ll bet I’d like that. My favorite class is Zumba, also a dance class that mixes a bunch of stuff in and teaches fast pace dance routines…LOVE. Best teacher ever for that at Lifetime Fitness.

I think it’s awesome that even you, SR, sweats like a piggy at a fitness class. It definitely shows it’s a good one. :)

Have a fab weekend. – Jessica

I am a Pure Barre fanatic. Currently I’m doing a challenge where you have to complete 30 classes in 30 days – with a max of 2 classes per day allowed in case you have miss one. I noticed a significant change in my, what I thought was fit, body. It really has tightened everything up and even increased my flexibility. I was able to complete a full split, something I’ve never been able to do, in 1 week of daily classes. I’m hooked!

Reply

tess January 27, 2012 at 2:18 pm

Oh my gosh. Doing the splits is on my bucket list. Certain it will never happen of course… haha. And yes, I have many more fabulous things on the list but I watched my sister do it my whole life. I always thought it was soo cool.

I teach a fitness boxing class and love it. I’ve been super interested in trying barre classes myself, would be a good combo with boxing and running. I love to run after yoga so maybe I can do barre on my run days. Thanks everyone for sharing your experience, I think I’m going to see if I can find a month dealio somewhere.

Wish it were freeeee and not so darn expensive.

Barre classes are great for discovering muscles you don’t even know you have!
I like the idea of classes but I’m really bad at them so I don’t go. I’m fairly athletic and I like think I’m smarter than the average bear but for some reason I really struggle to keep up.

I would love to try a Barre class but I don’t have any near me. I am obsessed with BodyPump and have been doing it for about 6-8 months. I’ve tried two different Zumba instructors but I haven’t found one that is tough enough. Going to yoga tomorrow morning but I like doing it at home better with yogadownload.com

Shay January 27, 2012 at 6:51 pm

I’ve never tried a Barre class but I would if my gym offered it.

My favorites are Pilates and yoga. I’m hoping to be brave soon and try a Weights for Women class.

My first Groupon was for 10 fitness classes and I used them all on a barre class, Ballet Sculpt. I absolutely love them, plus I was a ballet dancer for a long time, so it was the perfect fit into my fitness routine!

I’d love to try a barre class but don’t think they offer any in my area. I also want to try crossfit! I love body step and body pump because both make me feel like I got a thorough workout! Every class I leave completely drenched.

Reply

Adrianna January 28, 2012 at 6:16 pm

I would LOVE to try this, but no where offers it around this joint. my favorite classes are spin and athletic conditioning, which is like boot camp.
glad you liked it so much…was cool to read about.
