Who doesn’t like running??

by SkinnyRunner on December 30, 2011

WORKOUT – (total) 14.5 miles/2:02   no music, hilly

Streak – day 16

This morning I ran down the hill (4.15 miles/32 mins) from the shoe we live in to meet Katie for a run.

(Sushi date w/ Katie and bridesmaid dresses)

dscn1608

We planned this run while I was still in Texas, then I got my days all mixed up and by a Christmas miracle, I made it on time to our meeting spot.  We ran (3.7 miles/37 mins) and then I finished up (6.6 miles/53 mins) for a total of 14.5 miles.

With this run I hit my goal of 2500 miles for the year.  Considering I took about 3 months off to commercial fish in Alaska, I’m happy enough with it.

What else I’m happy about?  Vanessa Hudgens bringing back denim overalls as a bikini cover up.  I’ve been waiting and waiting for this look to be en vogue again.

You know I love running; I wouldn’t run 2500 miles to try to impress a bunch of internet strangers (except you, Amy) if I didn’t.  But as I was running this morning I was wondering, Anyone out there not like running?  Think it’s boring and just not into it?

Sometimes it seems like everyone in the healthy living blogworld is a runner and even a marathoner which is great; I wish everyone could run 1 marathon in their lifetime because it’s such a fantastic sense of accomplishment.

But it’d be interesting to hear from anyone who’s not into running, who has no desire to ever run a marathon.

My advice is to do the activity/workout that you love (or hate the least).  I have zero rhythm and prefer to make a fool of myself online rather in public so Zumba isn’t for me.  Likewise, the only time I like to be in a pool is when I’m doing this…

dscn3966_thumb

…so swimming isn’t my deal either.  Find what you enjoy and do that.  You don’t have a marathoner to be fit and healthy…  although you do to be my friend.

Until 3 months ago when my friend magically convinced me to sign up for a half marathon with her, I HATED running. That’s an understatement, I LOATHED running. No particular reason why. I’ve just never been into it for as long as I can remember (I was the slowest in elementary school, too). Somehow it was enjoyable this time around, and now I enjoy my long run days more than the shorter run days. Funny how things work out.

I don’t really like running. But I think it’s because I’m not very good at it. If I was faster/in better shape, maybe I would love it. I do it just because it’s a workout now. I much prefer to spin or swim, but running is cheaper (than paying for classes at my gym, which are extra) and I don’t have to do it within the pre-set hours of the gym schedule. But I don’t love it at all.

Maybe I’m not allowed to comment… because really I think running is the BEST. You know. Your feet & you & a little fun torture. How can you not like it? If I wasn’t into it, I’d probably just do TurboFire and Jillian Michaels. Or maybe just canoeing!!!!!!

It’s not that I don’t like running, it’s just hard for me. But I still do it. My lungs don’t like to work and then my ankle hurts and then my feet hurt. I’m a mess – lol.
I would love to run a marathon, I just think my body would let me. I am considering a half marathon though, but I’m extremely slow.

I like to run, but am just not built to be a serious runner and am very prone to injuries. Because of this, I have found that I like a lot of other activities, like yoga, pilates, swimming, and biking. I try to just mix it up and not stick to one thing.

Running has always been my thing, since I had my son 16 years ago. I have since fallen in love with marathons, half marathons and triathalons. Who doesn’t love running? You can do it anywhere, and it’s free. http://www.dashingdiva.net

I’ve been running for 10 years and I don’t love it. I do like the portability of it, that I can do it anywhere I want as long as I have my sneakers. I like the scenery. I like the results. Nothing else I do has as much of an impact on my weight. And I do like being done with a run. But the actual act is not fun for me. I do not aspire to do a marathon. A half, maybe. But a 10K is the most I’ve ever run. I get very worked up before a race, for no good reason, and I put crazy pressure on myself to try to be faster this time. I can’t just run for the hell of it. And not care if I didn’t run as far or as fast I thought I should have that day. So maybe when I see a shrink, he’ll tell me how to love running. Until then, I do it because I like the results, but it’s not my fav activity ever.

I’m totally a swimmer (swam competitively 12+ years, plus a year of water polo in college) but I think my real love is spinning. Unfortunately, at the school where I go to grad school, I’d have to pay out the nose for it :( So I switch between self-led spin class, elliptical, swimming, and strength. Currently I’m training for a half marathon to raise money, but I think the 5k is more my taste. After my half, I’ll probably just be an “exercise” runner who does the occasional race instead of a race runner. After 30-ish minutes of running, I get incredibly bored!

I hate running. Absolutely hate it. Wish it didn’t exist. My dream world would be to weight train and plank all day, every day, and that the earth would explode if we tried to run. I’ll run for about 2 minutes and convince myself that is good enough and just walk high-ass inclines. I’m not sure why I love to read about your running since I hate it so much, but oh well! Hate it.

I hate running. Absolutely hate it. I started a few months ago and have run, maybe 5 times. I have hated it every time. I don’t know if I’m not doing it right or if my body is just getting old, but I feel sore all the time. Not my muscles, but my joints – my knees and hips. I only run a mile or two and it is SO hard. Funny enough, I’ve never left a comment here before, but my sister and I ran/walked a mile and a half today (yuck – running is hard – did I mention that??) and during our run I was telling her about you and how much you run a day. She literally stopped running and just started at me. I don’t think she believed me :) Anyway, you kick ass for running like you do – you rock!!

I’m def. planning on running a full once i get my half marathon down to below 1:50. (almost there!) And i love your blog!!! It inspired me to try for a half- before that the most I ever ran was 4 miles. now i bust out 10- 13 milers every weekend and love it:-) Btw, i’ve meant to ask you this before- what is the furthest you’ve ever run? I really want to like running… but it hasn’t happened yet. I’m hoping 2012 will be the year that I hate running a little less – I just moved to a new city & can’t afford to join a gym right now, so running seems like a natural choice to try & stave off the extra pounds that are trying to take over my midsection (sigh). Of course, when it’s 20-30 degrees outside, that isn’t very appealing either so… we’ll see how it goes over the next few months.

I ran a 5k earlier this year & I think I would go as high as a 10k, but double digit miles creep me out a little bit. I definitely don’t think I’ll ever desire to run a marathon.

I tried running cross country the summer before I started jr. high (I’m 26 now, so I really should probably get over this) & I hated it. Only felt a runner’s high once at the very end of the summer – my dad told me, ‘that’s what it’s supposed to feel like all the time!’ Yeah… not so much. More like… dying a slow & painful death in the already hot & humid at 6:30 AM South Carolina weather, while a bia of a coach yells at you to go pick it up & go faster from her air-conditioned SUV she drove around to follow us, because there’s no way in hell she’d be able to run around w/us herself, and lord help you if she caught you walking…(no, I’m not still bitter, why do you ask?)

I stuck to playing soccer – played all the way through jr. high & high school & college, and still play on a co-ed team now, so… go figure. I guess I just need to have a reason for running? Or maybe I’m just more of a team sports person.

Whatever, this was a long post. Love your blog!

Elizabeth@GenuineEfforts December 30, 2011 at 12:38 pm

I really like running; I think I’d like it more if I could get thinner/faster. But I like zumba and crossfit and yoga too, so I feel like running is the main entree, not the whole meal.

I keep trying to love it though…maybe tomorrow it will happen! ;)

I hate running for just running! I agree with the team sport comment, I love sports, still play at a very high level, so I run because I have to. I would rather split up a run with up/downs or burpees than just run (that is saying a lot). You put a ball in front of me, I will run forever, just to run…I get soooo bored.

I run because I have to…maybe ther will change one day…but not today!

I do like running, but I have zero desire to run a marathon. Half marathons are fun – they don’t take long to do and they don’t require much training, but marathons…oy vey. Why would I want to run for 3+ hours? Kudos to you guys.

P.S. Since recovering from a running injury and taking a month off from running, I’ve been wondering myself why people run and continue to “torture” themselves. Runners are nuts.

i’m a runner but a half marathon is the longest distance i’m willing to run. currently i have no desire or plans for a marathon and i am ok with that! i’m much more of a speed type so in terms of race times i do disproportionately well in the 5K and 10K compared to my half marathon time. i build speed faster and it takes a lot of speed training before i burn out. building distance is the complete opposite for me (build slowly and burn out quickly). and i’m ok with all of this, as long as i’m enjoying it!

I h.a.t.e. running! I cannot imagine paying any sort of fee to run a race and wouldn’t even be tempted to do it if somebody paid ME! It’s not that I don’t like to be in shape… I ran for a short time a few years ago and I like the way I feel after a run, but the entire time I’m thinking of all the things I’d rather be doing. Not worth it to me… but props to all of you who do it and love it! :)

I am doing number TEN a week from tomorrow. And I will never do a marathon. I know how sucky I feel at the end of 13.1, so there ain’t no way I could double that. I’ve been running for 25 years or so, with a 4 year break to drink in college. I still love it.

Last night, my first run since Sunday, I felt that “holy s this is cool” feeling that some people get the first time they have a run that feels effortless. That hasn’t gone away, or at least I’m still rediscovering it periodically. I had forgotten how good it feels to enjoy the simple beauty of a run because I haven’t been running much for “me” lately. I’ve been limiting my running to either my friends who are way too fit and make me hurt or the athletes I am coaching who deserve all of the focus and attention when I am with them.

My favorite runs are flat, paved, and fast. Something feels incredible about those moments of tranquility, balancing as close to my edge as I dare, squeezing towards my limits, aware of the dangers but pushing forward on the tightrope.

At the same time, running has taken a back seat during the last two winters. Yoga holds tremendous mystery for my body at this point in my life. I have so much ground to cover to just do half of the poses I want to be able to do someday. When I want “me” time, I’ve been looking to my mat before my shoes.

I’ve seen the harsh side of running as I’ve watched a few of my athletes sustain some of the very common injuries that tend to affect most runners. Running is often painful and it can be heartless.

There is room in life to love more than one sport. I often wish I had more time to ride and swim and climb.

I love running. It’s for me like Eric Lidle (sp?) said: “When I run, I feel His pleasure.” There aren’t many better ways to test yourself against yourself, to enjoy being outside, and to get a good workout. And running for running’s sake is just as much fun for me as training for a race.

I despise running. Like… to the point I was a goalie in soccer because I learned in 4th grade that if i was a goalie that meant I didn’t have to run. I do it now, because I do find some therapy with it. But I would rather Jazzercise (with leg warmers) or dance around a pole (best fitness I’ve ever done. EVER).

I love the idea of running. In my mind I am a runner, but in my body I am too afraid or out of shape to be a runner. I know it takes time and you have to gradually work up your miles, but I just have a hard time starting….that’s what my problem is. I have to shamefully admit that I have signed up for 2 marathons and never ran them because when time came I was not ready. How sad is that? I actually do have a life goal of running a marathon. So my advice from you would be how should I start? Where do I even begin? I am a full time teacher and full time mom (when I get home, my husband leaves for work :( ) So I find, finding time one of my biggest struggles…..read more than you really wanted to know?!? I am done with my rant now. I admire you and your running. One day I will be a runner. I just need to put one foot in front of the other….

3. don’t be so hard on yourself. we all started somewhere. I’m a full-time teacher and a full-time mom and my husband is a coach so he works 14-16 hours a day and it’s HARD. but in 2011 I ran my first two half marathons. You can do it!!

Super proud of my first whole year of serious running and racing and my low number (compared to 2,500!) of running 835 miles for the year (after tomorrow’s run)…but i have NO desire to run a marathon. Probably never a half marathon either. But i do get out there at 6 am in 24 degrees and run my 10k distance 4x a week. And out of 12 races this year, I’ve earned 10 age group medals and one overall female award. I’ve set PR’s in every distance I’ve raced this year (5k, 4 miler, 5 miler, 10k). After high school sprinting, I never wanted to run competitively again (hated it). So for about 10 years I just ran to keep in shape…never going more than 9 miles and usually staying at about 3. Then once I moved to a more rural area, the miles started creeping up and I started to ‘Love’ it again. Friends asked why I didn’t do a 1/2 marathon and I was finally convinced. From that day on I fell in love with racing (distances…still hate 5ks and will only do them for charity because my sprinting abilities seem to have left me). Continued to think it would be crazy to do a full…finished 2 this year and am making plans for more in 2012. Still, there are some days I can say I hate running but on others I live for it. Runners embody the definition of insanity sometimes.

Eventually I got to the point where I ran 3-5 miles everyday and wanted to sign up for a half marathon. Long story short, I married that guy, we had a baby and let’s just say I’m working my butt off to get back into shape and to do that half! My goal is to definitely run a marathon one day! Though when i have a run where everything comes together (had one this morning)- i just love it & have had runners high quite a few times which is unreal. Running is such an achievement for me as i’m not a natural runner – however since reading SR my running has improved heaps – so inspiring! Thks SR !!! aiming to do at least 3x 1/2 marathons 2012- then marathons the year after- can’t wait to do one! ….also the effects of running is amazing – increased energy, sorting out dodgy stomach and being much happier with my body- also the mental clarity- it really sorts your head out!!

I used to tolerate running since it’s good exercise that allowed me to go outside and be active. But then I joined a running group for beginner’s (like 5k training) and the coach was the devil. If you had a fitness level that was lower than hers or a pace that she thought was unreasonable she treated you like crap. I actually caught her talking about me and some of the other runners one time to some of the runners that were actually able to keep up with her (5 people out of about 50). Since then I have running PTSD and hate it with a passion!

love running! haven’t always loved it, though. didn’t grow up as a runner. was overweight all throughout high school and most of college. lost weight thru diet and exercise and working out taking dance classes at 24 hour fitness (a class called danceaton – like a high impact zumba) and spin classes. both helped me build endurance and gave me the confidence to run. lost a total of 60 pounds and kept it off from mostly my consistency with running. joined a running club and became a coach. now…I LOVE running and wouldn’t have it any other way! and glad there are bloggers out there like you who love it too!

Not me. I love running. I was lucky enough to be able to run every day over the festive break. I loved it :)

Even though I love running, I don’t have any desire to run a marathon. I also don’t see that fact changing.

(Then again, ask me about three weeks after completing my first half marathon. I can see myself being a little overly confident in myself post accomplishment and healed.)

I would rather stab myself in the hand with a dull fork than run… But I love your blog!
