The Shoe Guru–new shoes

by SkinnyRunner on December 9, 2011

I’ve ran in Mizuno Wave Riders since the summer of 2009 when I was first professionally fitted at a running store.  I’m not a running shoe person at all (whatever shoe keeps me injury-free is good with me), although I really want those dang hot pink ones that HRG and RER have.

I thought about killing them both with kindness, but honestly, it’s so messy.  Blood gets everywhere.

So Saucony sent me a pair of the Saucony PowerGrid Triumph 9 to try out a month or two ago.  Since I hadn’t run in a different pair of shoes for a couple years, I SLOWLY eased into these babies.  Like I would do a couple easy miles in them, stop at home and chang into my old ones.

I just didn’t want to injure anything so I was pretty conservative with trying them out.

Before I got these shoes, I didn’t even know what a “drop” was: it’s basically the difference in height between the heel and toe.  or something like that.  Zero drop shoes are suppose to mimic barefoot running and some people think that’s better for you and prevents injuries.

The Saucony Guide 5, Triumph 9 and Hurricane 14 all have an 8mm drop so the idea is that these shoes are for runners who want to ease into shoes with a lower heel=forefoot offset (drop).  Basically me because honestly, I’m probably never going to run completely barefoot.

The Triumph 9, from what I read, changed its’ cushioning and lightened itself up too; a women’s size 8 weighs 9.6 ounces.

What I thought:

The Triumph 9 definitely feels lighter and more cushioned than my Mizunos; it also feels a lot wider and bigger in general.  If I ordered another pair, I’d go a half size down to an 8.

But beyond that, I personally couldn’t tell any other differences; my calves and legs felt the same with either shoe.  I thought with the 8mm drop my calves might be sore, but they never were.

I like both shoes and would wear either.

The Saucony Triumph 9 retails for $130 and you can find more info about the shoe from Running Warehouse.

Today’s new Cat lady Blogs is The Go Girl!

My name is Kelsey and I am stoked to be sharing the blogosphere with Skinnyrunner!  You can call me The Go Girl, because that’s exactly what I am: on the go.

I’m just a twenty year young college gal studying Communications and trying to be healthier and fitter.  You can find me in Knoxville, TN and for those of you who don’t know, we bleed orange around here.

"What else would I be wearing on gameday?”

My blog really has no distinct purpose other than the fact that I use it to stay accountable to personal fitness and to share with anyone who cares the daily ins and outs of my super exciting, you-wish-you-were-me life.

Go girl chronicles everything from how many bicep curls I attempted  to how many Krispy Kreme donuts I ate for breakfast. It gets a little out of hand sometimes, but my twelve stalkers readers seem to like it.

"Those two donuts are the ones we saved for "our treat".  The other 10 were just gifts to our hips.”

I really want to inspire others to get in touch with their inner "go girl/guy".  GO stands for Get Out, whether its getting out to do a long run, or just getting out to enjoy the outdoors.

My life gets a little crazy at times, but blogging about it along with health, food/nutrition, fashion, running (attempts), and overall lifestyle is my way of adding something to the world.

“Don’t even try to tell me that a chocolate slip-n-slide is not blog worthy.”

Maybe y’all have heard of a gal named Kara Goucher?  We have the same initials so I suppose I am genetically programmed to be a runner or something.  I’ll keep telling myself that if you keep reading.

I just did my 6th half marathon this past fall and beat my best time by over 30 minutes.  A huge accomplishment for this Go Girl.

“ I met a fellow runner/blogger after the half.”

Becoming a "runner" (or a "wogger" as I affectionately refer to it as) has not been an easy journey. I joined a marathon team in December and was able to drop 37 pounds before my April half.

During the marathon training process I learned so much about overall health improvement and how to live a more active lifestyle.  I always tell myself that it doesn’t matter how fast I’m moving, at least I’m GOing.  In my book, this is definite running princess material.

“Tiara is a must-have in any running princess’s wardrobe.”

When I’m not busy being fabulous, I spend a lot of time with my best friend Ashley doing lots of fun (and free) stuff.  We pretend we are twins and think we are super cool.

You would too if you met us, so come stalk my blog so I can meet you and we can be all twinsies and bff too!  I would tell you to follow me, but then that would sound like a creepy guy in a big van offering candy to young children.  Yeah, none of that business.

“Love now, judge later”

How cute is that Go Girl?  Now GO over to Kelsey’s blog and say hello; thanks for the email!

After that check out Stella & Dot’s Spread the Love campaign – you buy one of their affordable little girl pieces and they donate one (through their charity) to a young girl in need who might not otherwise get a Christmas present.

Cool initiative by Stella & Dot!

I heard about the 8mm drop and thought it was an interesting concept… I once tried Mizunos and ended up with severe shin splints so I am also terrified to try new shoes… :) Haha.

I used to run in Mizzunos and then mid marathon training I started to get weird pains in my foot. I went for an “official” sneaker match up and ended up with the Sauconys…haven’t had a problem since, except for that whole not wanting to get off my couch thing…
oh well!
Happy Friday!

Have you run more than a couple miles in those since? I’m looking for new shoes. Not sure if my Mizunos are causing my knee problem or not.

ive probably ran 100-150 miles total in them, starting with a 3 miler and working up to a 14er.

I just got my Mizuno Wave Rider 15s today and trying them on felt great, but I’m sticking with my Nike Lunarglide 3′s for awhile.
