On a TV show

by SkinnyRunner on December 5, 2011

Today I finally wore my compression jeans…

DSCN7072

These babies are skintight.  I mean, they are tighter than Kate Gosselin’s new face.  And yes, for those of you who asked, I did hear that she ran her first full yesterday in 4:59:21.  The only thing is I thought there was a 4:30 cutoff time?!

kate_gosselin_face

Anyways, I slept in til 7:30am(!), took a rest day (the hotel gym costs $20, blarch) and then after donning my pantyhose pants, we went in search of some celebrities…

DSCN7075

Gold & Silver Pawn from the TV show Pawn Stars.

There was a line out the door but it moved pretty quickly.

DSCN7076

Marlie tried to get a pic of me under the sign but we got in trouble.  Apparently you aren’t suppose to take pics outside but could inside?!  That doesn’t even make sense.  So I’m giving her the “Get back in line before they kick us outta here” hand gesture.

DSCN7079

The real deal: pawn stores in general are pretty jank.  This one is too.  It’s in a crappy area, it’s small and besides the whole TV thing, there’s nothing special about it.  But of course, you’re smart and knew that already.

DSCN7077

Matti was embarrassed, but come on, we’re all in there just because of the show so might as well not pretend like we’re really interested in an $8500 cannon.  No one was rushing to buy that.

DSCN7080

What’s interesting is that the store isn’t that big but 2/3 of it is all Pawn Star merchandise that you don’t ever see on the show.

I bet they make more on the merchandise than on actual pawned stuff; everyone was buying souvenirs.  And they weren’t really cheap either – a regular white paper notebook with Chumlee’s face was $7.99.

This is what I bought:

DSCN7082

Who needs a notebook when you have a life-size cutout?

DSCN7083

Jaymo actually enjoyed looking around at the artwork and different items for sale because he’s into the whole buying/reselling stuff on ebay, etc.

DSCN7085

DSCN7084DSCN7081

I think Matti thought the whole place was pretty lame.  I think he better watch out because Chumlee could eat him… for an after-dinner snack.

We didn’t see any of the guys so we peaced out and went to eat at the Peppermill.  It came highly recommended; it’s the quintessential old Vegas-type diner or so I read.

DSCN7086

DSCN7089

Big portions, good food but nothing TDF, to die for.  I had a veggie egg white omelet:

DSCN7090

I had a little of the hash browns and 2 pieces of JJ’s french toast and 2 pieces of toast.  Girl was hungry.

DSCN7091

Marlie and I got a free postcard:

DSCN7093

How romantic does our picture look, just the two of us head to head.

In the afternoon we took Matti and Marlie to the airport; we tried to convince them to stay longer with us but Marlie has to work tomorrow.  just call in sick awesome.  I do all the time.

DSCN7095

On the way back we stopped at one of JayJay’s favorite fast food restaurants in the world, Raising Cane’s.  He said tonight that these were the “best chicken fingers ever.”

DSCN7098

We each got the combo platter – the girl at the counter couldn’t believe I could eat it all.  Umm, it’s only 4 small fingers.

DSCN7099

They have this secret sauce that’s like a peppery ranch/ketchup/1000 island dressing that’s insane.  The chicken is really good; the fries are decent, the sauce puts it all OTT.  over the top.

Looking back over the weekend, Hash House a Go Go was hands down the best meal we had.  SOOOOOOOOO good.

Man, I feel like a food blogger with all this Vegas food!

What’s the best meal you’ve eaten in Vegas?  Or even, best meal hands down?

Shannon just ran her first half marathon, the St. Jude Memphis half!

In January, I got the bright idea that I was going to run a half-marathon. Hilarious, right? I mean this was coming from the girl that could not run around the block one time. (I’m dead serious about this!)

And she did it, congrats Shannon!

Jingle_Bell_Run

Gaby B. and her sister-in-law Dalanna just run the Jingle Bell 4 mile Run in Wichita, KS.

It was 45*, raining buckets, and thundering and lightning, so overall….super fun. Ha!  Actually it turned out fine and stopped raining and we didn’t even die or anything!  And I got interviewed by a news lady so I will be famous tonight after the 6 o’clock news.  But I will still be your friend if you want…

Congrats Gaby and Dalanna, especially since you’re famous!

Emily just ran her second marathon in the rain!

I just finished my White Rock Half Marathon; it was my second half marathon ever and I had a goal of finishing under 2 hours. Although I just missed it (2:01:09), I am still proud of my performance. It was raining the whole time and cold.

Those pics of Kate Gosselin are scary, man.

My favorite place to eat in Vegas has to be Mesa Grill. Bobby Flay is brilliant.

I did a double take when I saw your last comment about Emily who ran in the rain yesterday – since that is also my name and I also ran White Rock yesterday. My first full! The weather was miserable – but it was a fun day anyhow. And now we have war stories to tell, right?

Best place I have eaten in vegas is Wolf Gang Puck’s in the MGM…sooo good! But hash house in SD is by far the best breakfast I have ever had!

SO insane that Raising Cane’s has made its way to places like Vegas! Literally they ARE the best chicken fingers, EVER. I remember going to eat at the original, one-of-its kind Raising Cane’s just outside the gates of LSU after my friends and I would go do our research projects at the campus library. I am a proud graduate of the same high school as the Raising Cane’s founder. My family buys Cane’s sauce by the jar :P (Random fun fact: Did you know the creator salmon fished in Alaska to build up his seed money to start Cane’s?)

Well, I’m glad Kate is still important enough to hold the strip hostage for an extra 30 minutes. I was getting worried. She is off grid huh? I want to I love Chumlee undies. Did they have any? It would be worth the $19.95.

It’s currently colder in Lubbock than in Sitka… please rescue me to SoCal? Or to Vegas too. This girl’s not picky. I’m not made for these temps.

Best meal – right now I’d eat cardboard with a spoon if restaurant had seat warmers and a those heated airport chute thingys to transport restaurant patrons from their cars.

I stayed at the Wynn when I was there over the summer and every single meal I had there was amazing. My favorite restaurants were Bartolotta (Italian) and Okada (Japanese). We went to Okada twice we loved it so much. They were a bit on the expensive side, but definitely worth it!

Omg knowing Kate G. ran a marathon makes me hate her even more (mostly because I’m not there yet)! I will channel that on my run tomorrow…Also, love your jeans! Your race recap was helpful regarding halfers. I will be running my first race EVER in May and I will remember that :)

Love CUT at the Palazzo for a steak, expensive, but worth it. They also have the most amazing bread service.

My other favorite is the pancakes at Terrace Point Cafe at Wynn. So fluffy.

Vegas has so many options…

Best meal I ate in Vegas was the 1:30am burger that we had after the race. We all ended up getting a little sick after the run (not sure why) so by the time we talked the hubbies into going to get us food while we laid in bed HRM and I passed out. And as soon as the hubby’s walked into the room we sat up in bed and inhaled our burgers from “Burger Bar” SUPER YUMMY!!

Gloria December 5, 2011 at 10:32 pm

I said Burger Bar too! An amazing burger with a nutella milkshake post-marathon. Mmm. So good.

We hit up Tao for dinner tonight and it was amazing. My husband loves the pawn star show. he watches it all the time. so funny hehe. sorry we did not really get to chat and meet this weekend : ( but sounds like you kicked ass in the race despite all the conditions

Gloria December 5, 2011 at 10:29 pm

Not sure if you knew or not but the 4:30 limit was basically just for the first half. I had emailed them with this question because it was my first marathon and I wasn’t sure how long it would take. Competitor said that you just had to finish the first half at a 4:30 pace, so in 2:15, so they could reopen the roads. Anyway I’m just glad I beat Kate Gosselin.

Best meal in Vegas this weekend? A custom burger from the Burger Bar in Mandalay Bay. With a nutella milkshake. Post-marathon. Greatest meal in Vegas, hands down.

Grand lux cafe at the Venetian. Prolly only because we were looking at diamonds at her mom’s store that day. I walked past it after the expo. Love the canal, its the only public place where I can sort of feel calm in the entire city.

I am always in Vegas with my sister and we are constantly sharing things. Hey you get a salad and I will get a sandwich and we will share. But the best thing I can recall is a monster BLT at the Carnegie Deli in the Mirage. We shared it (of course) and it was STILL too much food. We ate at Emeril’s place in the Venetian and it was good but nothing I would have to go back for. Next time we want to try Kraft in MGM Grande.

I went to the pawn shop two years ago in Vegas – there was a line but nothing like that! I actually had my picture taken with Chumlee, which really isn’t exciting as one might think.

Who cares if it took Kate Gosselin 4:59 to run a full? Whether you like her or not, running a marathon is a huge accomplishment no matter how long it takes you. In fact, I think she did great!

Reply

Kris December 6, 2011 at 9:31 am

No one said anything derogatory about her finishing time, just that it was after the cut off.

Reply

skinnyrunner December 6, 2011 at 9:49 am

whether i like her or not has absolutely nothing to do with what i said because i didn’t negate her accomplishment in any way.

in fact i just wrote and i quote, “If you run any distance (or pace or time), that’s an accomplishment and you should be proud!” from this post http://skinnyrunner.com/2011/12/05/rock-n-roll-vegas-race-recap/

Wow, that sucks the pawn shop was actually more of a scam for people to buy stuff than anything it seems! I was thinking of doing the Vegas half next year, but not now after all these bad reviews I’ve been reading. Is it just me…or has rock n roll really started to go down the bigger they get? Savannah was my first, and luckily I had a good experience, but there were terrible logistics at that one as well. But, whenever I run smaller races those have been bad as well (well I did 3 small races all with the same director so that might be why!)

Congrats to all the fab runners this weekend!

Best meal in Vegas is the Bellagio’s bananas foster waffles. I still dream about them. My step dad went to that Pawn Stars place this summer when he went out there… nuts.

I am totally down with having kids someday but if I ever look like that first picture I will seriously harm someone.

Yeah there apparently is a lot of drama over her finishing time and the race as a whole. I read the comments on the RNRLV Facebook page and folks are hot and angry!

Those jeans are ridiculous! Did you have to lay on the bed, 70′s style, and use pliers to zip the zipper? I kind of want some.

I need to get that mug for my husband for Christmas. He’s obsessed with Pawn Stars. Gotta admit, that show is kind of awesome.

Two of my favorite meals that I’ve had there were at MESA and Delmonico’s steak house. Southwest flavors and steak rock my socks.

Umm Canes Chicken and sauce is DELICIOUS I’m just not a fan of their fries.. at all.. not worth it to me. Now if they had some mashed potatoes I’d be there all the time. So good thing they don’t!

I love Cane’s sauce. I think I should go there for dinner this week. We have one in the state of Minnesota and even though it’s in a town I’m in a lot, I never think to eat there. Thanks for the reminder!

I have to say I love those jeans. You are totally pulling them off! I think you said your hubby picked them out for you, right? love how guys equate tightness with hotness but he was right this time! Glad you had fun in Vegas!

I saw Kate at the start of the race (Corral 2) but I thought it was someone impersonating her. I mean it is Vegas. Then when I saw a camera following her I realized it was her. Weird.

I love Vegas restaurants. Where else (except maybe NY) can you find such amazing stuff in such a small area?

After I ran the LV RnR half (I swear I never got into the marathon lane, respect the signs), my husband, friend and I ate at Craftsteak. It was my second time there and it totally lived up to it’s hype. AMAZING!
