The question that I asked a lot of other runners and was asked is,
What do you eat for a 4pm marathon/5:30 half marathon start?
Well, I don’t know. I definitely didn’t do it right since I had stomach issues for the first 9 miles, but this is what I ate on race day, pre and post-race:
I had a cup of instant Starbucks coffee at 6am when I woke up in the hotel room and then walked to a Coffee Bean where I had a grande coffee and a Clif crunch bar:
I think the bar had about 200 calories.
Around 11am I had a CLICK espresso protein shake, mocha flavor.
120 calories, 15 grams of protein
For lunch at 1 pm I had a burger at Holsteins, a really tasty burger and some fries.
15 minutes before the race I ate a Picky Bar (200 calories) because I was worried I hadn’t eaten enough; looking back, I don’t think I needed it because I was still digesting the burger.
I took 3 gels (300 cals) in the race and drank a couple cups of energy drink as well.
After the race I chugged a bottle (2 servings) of lowfat chocolate milk and then had a glass of champagne at the Mandalay Bay.
For a late dinner (took a long time to get a cab and just get out of the area, it was super crowded with all us runners) we went to KGB: Kerry’s Gourmet Burgers in Harrah’s. Yep, 2 burgers in one day not counting the one I re-ate for 9 miles.
We started with fried pickles for an appetizer; I had a couple. They were tasty (what isn’t when it’s fried?!) but they were a little spicy for me.
I had the Cali Chicken with avocado, sprouts, red onion and tomato; it was just ok.
And a dirty martini.
I wouldn’t recommend this place: it was really average, service was spotty and there’s too many other places to get a better burger. Oh well, can’t win ‘em all.
And that’s what I ate.
This morning I’ve already eaten a banana, another granola bar, an apple and a packet of peanut butter. It’s 9:30am. good ‘ol marathon hunger.
Oh, and I look really cute too wearing my compression shorts:
