I was running in the marathon lane with the 3:30 pace guy, should’ve known you were ahead of me ;-) Great job!

BTW, it took me 4 hours to get back to Trump. WTF race organizers? Massive Fail.

Oh gee’s, I would have been one of the halfers you were shouting at…in German, French and Portuguese. :) Love the hair and your after race beverage. You’re one crazy cat! Congrats.

Please come check out today’s MMM featured runner…she ran the Vegas Marathon last night too and her story is SO inspiring!!

ahhh i experienced that same frustration at the last open marathon i ran, at the tucson marathon. the irony of it was that the 3-hour marathoners were fighting the 2:30+ halfers for the lane in the last 1-2 miles, and many of them were walking 2 abreast in a very narrow lane….
i also love that after our chat this past week we ran the exact same time (3:26) this sunday for our marathons. couldn´t have planned that!

skinnyrunner December 5, 2011 at 7:41 am

i tried to be polite as i possible could and say please every time. i mean, all my friends running were halfers!
but i dont think im at fault when people are running 13 miles in the wrong lane when there are cones every 25 feet saying which is the correct lane. (and im dumb and when i wrote this last night at midnight, i should have wrote to the right, not left. ooops)

It’s really not that complicated. Not sure why people have trouble with it. I was MORE than ANNOYED with the women at the Disney Princess that kept cutting back and forth across the course to get their pictures taken with Disney characters.

Congrats! I ran my first full marathon this weekend (just started running 2 years ago) and finished in 4:43.

I remember reading somewhere on your blog about your “thutt” injury!? I think I have the same thing going on. Any advice?

Ill try to get my thoughts out today as well.

It was a cluster, all the way around.

Cones are not sufficient to separate half and full traffic.

Barricades were needed to allow participant acces to the start coralls, which were not big enough anyway.

The course was designed to allow full participants multiple options to divert to the half course instead of being picked up by sag. This was intentional, as explained to us in the meeting i was at.

I also saw the tail/sag for the first time in one of these huge races. I was well beyond exhausted and frozen by that point. Those who were picked up were bummed about it. At least it was well managed, there was clearly an emphasis on safety at the very end.

Competitor caters to the mid pack runners and walkers and plans for people to fail to meet their goals. This is a reasonable business plan, and it shows based on the growth of their events.

However, other than a few specific rock and roll races with vip credentials, there is no concern for the athlete with a competitive time goal. This is painfully obvious, over multiple events and multiple years. Its a very small slice of the pie and therefore it takes a back seat.

In the end, its an event, and a unique one. I have a hard time calling it an actual race. Doing so is giving a pass that i am not willing to give.

With that said, there is a massive amount of planning and organization that goes into an event of this magnitude. Its an extremely difficult challenge to control a crowd of that size. So, i certainly sympathize with the efforts of those involved in pulling it off, even though i dont hesistate to use the word fail to describe those efforts.

Realistically, this race should have been capped at about half the number of actual participants for the half or it should have had about twice the planning, barricades, and volunteers. A few cones and some bikes to separate 6000 from 40000 is inexcusable.

Great time especially for having some roadblocks. Love the gray/purple/black combo. I run both halves and fulls and have had this happen to me…. but I’m kind of quiet and instead of saying something I will do the zig zagging. At the Santa Cruz half (course is beautiful but brutal) which is a lot of skinny trails and is out and back, when you come back there a lot of walkers… it was frustrating to me not that I didn’t think they should be there, they paid the feee same as me, but many of times they didn’t even acknowledge me, just were looking at their partner they are talking with, and I wanted to cry almost. I tend to push my shorter races harder and that particular race I had a goal I was really pushing for so was going through some pain and felt really dis-respected by the walkers. Hell, by other runners too. Excuse me on the trail when they have their ipod on full or are talking and they are running 2 x 2 in the middle of the trail doesn’t work and I ran off the trail tons to get by.

Anyway, long dumb comment, but this brings back painful memory, and at this particular race my watch said I ran over 14 miles rather than the 13.1 due to me getting out of everyone’s way. That’s a lotta lotta of zigging and zagging.

respect.

Congrats! I ran the half in 2:29. It was my first RnR and was surprised as I heard they were organized. I don’t think the cones were sufficient. In some areas, the cones must have been kicked down because there were none. Also, the half side was full of walkers in the early corrals. I’m fine with walkers, I just think they should be in the correct corral (we were corralled for a reason) and keep to the right. It was hard to pass people because it was way crowded. I feel that’s why some people might have been cutting over. Others probably just plain rude of course. That said, it was an experience and I’m glad I was able to do it.

Elisha December 5, 2011 at 6:46 am

PS: It was half to the right, so if you were yelling for them to keep to the left, then no wonder why they were all in your lane! Haha ;P

I don’t mean to sound like an idiot here, but reading some of these commets it sounds like the marathoners clearly get annoyed with the runners who are doing the half. Do marathoners run faster or something? I’ve only walked a 5K, and plan on walking my first half this spring, so I’m really just curious what all the hubbub is about. :)

Reply

KevinT December 5, 2011 at 7:42 am

Katie,

I ran the half at RNR Vegas last night and the issue was that they had the marathoners start an hour and a half before everyone then let the half marathoners go. The route had the marathoners go off and run the first part of their race by themselves and then they merged with the half-marathoners. In theory there should have been no issues if the wave starts worked properly and people were better divided by the cones.

Last night it was tough to see the cones and large portions of the race did not have cones so when the two groups merged you often had marathoners running with a large group of half-marathoners who were running at a slower pace.

A half-marathon pace should always be faster than your marathon pace, but if you have someone who is running a marathon at 8 min miles and one who is running a half at 10 min miles you run into issues with the merge of runners which is what happened last night.

Massive cluster. I got stuck so many times that by mile 20 I was in a sea of walkers. I dont want to have any excuses but that’s where I lost my race. I doubt I will be back for this next year.

The race coordinator was on the news as you guys were taking off and he said next year they want 60,000+ people, basically no cap on registration. I’m afraid I won’t be able to support the race if they do that.

Although I only did the half and I am much slower than you, I took was frustrated for much of the race. I put up my slowest time yet when I was planning on PRing by at least 10 minutes. I came down with food poisoning or something Saturday morning, so I guess I can’t be too hard on myself, but the 5 minutes I had to wait in line at McD’s because the porto lines everywhere were way too long, along with the dodging people the entire time, robbed me of my PR.

Off to check everyone else’s reports to see how others farred.

Yeah, dude I had to throw some serious elbows last night. It was like my gym gripe but times 40,000. Maybe they need to give a little prep talk at the beginning. Perhaps people don’t know that the slower you move the more left you should be? I was trying to hit a 3:40, and missed it by 2 min 22 seconds. I am blaming the jumping up and down sidewalks and weaving in and out of lanes and the fact that I was REALLY REALLY thirsty. Seriously, I think I got cytomax 3 times?
My first and last RNR Vegas. Especially if they are increasing it to 60k. Sure there are pretty lights, but I live here so I see them on the daily.
You sure did look cute though. Props!

I can’t believe so many people would want to do a late afternoon marathon/half. It is difficult enough to get fuelling right for a morning race, I can’t imagine how tricky it would be for this time. Also, crashing marathoners into the back of the half marathon is soooooooo annoying. Another vote for full marathon only events from me. Congrats to you for persevering for another great time.

Lori December 6, 2011 at 10:07 am

While I was a half marathoner (and definitely stayed to the right), I had a lot of the same issues. I was in corral 13 (my CORRECT corral) and I was passing WALKERS by mile 1. It was insane. Never once did I hit my stride because I was constantly dodging and weaving. I passed the 2:00 pacer at mile 11 so I thought I would get a good time, wrong, 2:19!! This was my first RnR and my first BIG half and it wasn’t good. And the post race was just awful- no protein to be found, no cabs to be found, no heat to be found, I was MISERABLE until we bribed a cab driver to take us and a couple other poor souls back to our hotel for whatever price he wanted. Not sure that I would do this one again. Doing Phoenix in January and hoping it will be better, otherwise I’m done w/ RnR.

Aron December 6, 2011 at 10:23 am

Ugh I saw so many marathoners getting frustrated and I know what its like to be at the end of the race and having to weave through it all. We were wondering before the race if that was going to be a disaster and sounds like it was. Those cones were so small and the writing was even smaller, I didn’t even know what they said on them for most of the race! You still did amazing though :)

Also – YES team refuel needs to have a reunion very soon – so fun getting to meet you this weekend FINALLY!
