The Runner’s Christmas List

by SkinnyRunner on November 21, 2011

WORKOUT – Ran outside 9.0 miles/1:13

We’re all excited because we’re headed to Disneyland this morning!  I’ve changed so many diapers in the last 24 hours, mostly Jay’s…  That’s a lie, I haven’t changed a single one.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Risa (go look at her last post!) first asked me to do a Runner’s Christmas List and then some other readers did too so these are all things that I personally have, own and use and think would make a great gift for someone else.  (I DO NOT receive any compensation if you buy these products; they’re just things I use, I like and I feel comfortable recommending)
For the runner whose friendship you’re trying to buy:
The Garmin 405
0183_thumb
Hands down, the best running invention ever made… besides the sports bra.  I never run without mine except on a treadmill; I even take mine on walks with the dog and pheasant hunting.  and sometimes even to bed if I’m beating the Kenyans in my dreams.
garmin%20405
It’s easy to use, finds satellites quickly, the customer service is great, totally worth the money.  You can get it for $199 on Amazon.  There’s newer models out, but the 405’s like George Clooney: why mess with perfection?
A tech tip: if you get water moisture in your garmin, put it in a bowl of rice which can dry it out.
For the Runner who’s a traveler and/or a healthy eater:
Gotein Protein to Go
product_hero
I  love to travel and when I do, I try to always bring 2 food items along with an empty water bottle: energy bars and protein mix, not because I’m a healthy eater but because if I don’t, I get really hungry and end up buying the $18 bag of trail mix from Hudson News that looks like it has 2 servings when in reality, it could feed the entire Gosselin clan.
Kate%20Plus%208_16
1750 calories later, I’m wishing I had my $18 back.  and some Tums.
So I bring protein powders with me to save a few bucks and a few thousand calories.  Y’all know I love CLICK espresso protein because it tastes like coffee, but I also like Gotein Protein To Go for non-coffee flavors, especially to add to oatmeal.  (my favorite is vanilla; does that mean I’m boring?)
A traveling food trick: Instead of a gutbomb breakfast sandwich from McDonny’s, buy an oatmeal (I like Starbucks), add some protein, maybe a piece of fruit and bam, you have a meal that’s healthy and cheap.
And Gotein’s super easy to tote around in your purse which is great because TSA won’t think you’re smuggling drugs with your Ziploc baggies so you might just get to skip out on the full-body cavity search.
gotein_sticks_home
The other reason I like Gotein is that it’s low calorie. (100 cal/17 g protein)  I’m no body builder… thank you Captain Obvious replies my bat wing arms… so I personally don’t want a protein bar/mix/powder that has 350 calories in it.
And since Gotein didn’t want to see a picture of my flappy bat wing arms that I threatened if they didn’t offer SR readers a deal, you can get $4 off each box of Gotein with the promo code ANNA.
For the Runner who’s eternally cold (and perpetually wimpy):
Nike Running Tights
These are the newer cooler version of what I have, simple black tights:
Nike-Tech-Womens-Running-Tights-425030_010_A
They fit well so you don’t get crotch sag, they’re not too heavy and they’re black – always good to hide those thighs or whatever you’re smuggling.
Unless you live in Death Valley, (wherein you have much bigger problems than I can help with) I think every runner needs a great fitting pair of running tights.  And Nike does it right.
005_thumb9
Remember they’re tights… so they should be tight.  Don’t be self-conscious and buy a bigger size; you’ll regret doing that.
A laundry tip: don’t put your spandex tights in the dryer; the high heat can break down the fibers so wash them and let them air dry.
For the Runner who chicks dudes but doesn’t want to look like them:
BIC Bands headbands
Love the company, love the story, love the product, love the charitable donation, love ‘em.  My favorites are the Sparkle bands modeled here by my twin sister Matti:
DSCN4911_thumb
They’re handmade in the USA and super affordable; they don’t slip off your head and there’s a ton of different styles, sizes and colors.
Another laundry tip: take these in the shower with you and gently wash with your hands instead of putting them in the washer.  This will make them last until the end of time.
006_thumb10
For the Runner who’s a buttface when they bonk:
Running Fuel.
There’s a million (not really, like 10) different options – gels, ShotBloks, Powerbar Chomps, Honey Stingers, Sport Beans, drink mixes, etc.  You can even get all Martha Stewart and buy holiday flavors or GU’s newest flavor, peanut butter:
GU-peanut-butter-and-peppermint-stick-flavor-energy-gels
I personally take GU gels for races and PickyBars for a pre-race meal (my fueling post here), but if you don’t know which your runner likes, buy a few different things for them to try out.  Like this person even alphabetized and categorized them for you:
events_ultraskate7_trailfood
Whatever you choose, running fuel makes a nice stocking stuffer for the runner in your life that acts like a total turd when they hit the wall.
For the Runner you actually care about:
26MileStones race bib coasters
il_570xN_226739882
You send in a bib (you can even get the bib back!) and it’s turned into 4 tile coasters.
I had one made with last year’s Vegas marathon bib; I chose that specific bib because it was my 12th marathon in 12 months, a PR and the same race where I ran my first marathon a year earlier so it was pretty special to me. {One of my favorite posts}
DSCN6474
I love that this is an affordable ($22) yet creative and personalized gift.  You don’t have to run Boston, be crazy fast or even be a marathoner – you could make one for the 10k breast cancer walk you did with your mom or the 5k run you did with your kids.
A completely selfish tip:  Put these out in the living room where everyone can see them because they’re unique enough that people will ask about them.  Niki walked into this trap yesterday… “Is this your last year’s race bib?”  Why, yes it is.  Let me tell you all about it, starting with my training 3 months prior.
il_570xN_226739816
And they’re great quality – the tile coasters are heavy and thick, not cheap looking and have a felt backing so they don’t scratch any surfaces.  Plus, they arrive packaged nice and neat in a little box.
And since I’ve begged and pleaded, 26MileStones has agreed to give 15% off with the code SKINNY through next Monday.  (You need to order by the first of December to receive them by Christmas so get to it!)
Do you have any favorite items to add to a Runner’s Christmas List that you like?
yeees, Bridgedale X-Hale Speed Diva and Demon socks and arm warmers. I can’t live without either.
Also, I got to try the gu peppermint stick and i am in love with it. It was like I was running with icy cool refreshment! Not unlike the york peppermint patty alps commercials from the 90s
Definitely agree on the Gu Peppermint Stick. Gonna go out and buy them up before the holidays end!
I could not agree more about the Garmin 405. My boyfriend has it, but he got me the Garmin 610. If he is not using his, I use it instead. It is cheaper than the 610 and waterproof (which the 610 is not for some reason?!). I think it is the best Garmin for the money.
Reply
JunieB November 21, 2011 at 9:07 am
it is not water proof, its water RESISTENT. BIG difference. the only Garmin that is water PROOF is the 310XT and then I would still be wary of it. The 310XT is more for the triathlete, hence the need for it being more for the water, but then again only up to a certain depth.
sorry to barge in but I work PT at a specialty running store, so I just felt like adding my .02.
Thanks, that is very helpful! I ran in it yesterday when it was sprinkling but I will make sure not to run in it in the hard rain.
Those are my Mardi Gras bib coasters!! Love them does not adequately describe how beautiful they are. The seller was great at working with me to include all of the parts I wanted. BIC Bands are another great find. And socks. A runner can always use more socks.
Thanks for all these gift ideas. I’m going to buy the head band for myself since I need them ASAP and can’t wait until Christmas.
Have fun at Disneyland. It’s full on Christmas Wonderland already at the park and Disney will make you forget that Thanksgiving hasn’t even come yet.
P.S. Did you know you can download an app for your Iphone and it will tell you now long the wait line is for each ride. It’s called Mouse Wait :)
YES – this race bib hanger and medal hanger ( http://www.lifeofblyss.com/2011/11/add-it-to-your-christmas-list/ ) was the first one I’ve ever come across that I actually find as cute as it is functional (love the conversation starting note..).
and WHAT? peppermint stick gu?! where on earth can I go and by 16 million?
I love the bib coasters!! Will definitely be getting that! I have an off the topic personal question and I totally understand if you don’t want to answer it but I’ll ask any ways. When you wear your Nike tights, do you wear underwear underneath them or no? I’m asking because I wore mine a couple weekends ago and had some major chafing issues after my run so I just wondered what other runners did! Thanks and sorry if this is TMI!! :)
Garmin is on my Christmas list for sure. Then I won’t have to carry my phone with me to find out how far I have run. Love the coasters. What a great idea and conversation piece!
So – I’m on the fence about getting a garmin. I’m getting an iphone in a few weeks and was just plan on using one of the running apps. But I’m not sure. Why don’t you like carrying your phone? Do you have a clip or arm band or do you actually carry it?
Reply
Nicole November 23, 2011 at 9:18 pm
I’m rather new to the running thing and felt absolutely ridiculous spending money on a Garmin; however, I am so pleased that I did (I went via eBay and got a barely used 405 for less than $150 with shipping). I tried using various running apps on my iPhone and all of them had some sort of issue. Mostly, they were off on the mileage. When it tells me I did 3.3 miles in 32 minutes I get way more excited than I do when I find out I really only did 2.8 miles. See? I am new (low miles, only a few times a week) and felt like I hadn’t ‘earned’ the need for a Garmin. But, I am also very type A and want to who, what, when, where and why about whatever it is I am doing. I like that I can sync it up, keep track of what I’ve done, see how I’ve progressed, etc. The running apps (I tried Run Keeper and one other that escapes me right now) were always a hassle. Just my $0.02. :)
Oh! And, the armband thing bugs me. So, that was another plus of ditching the iPhone apps. I use the watch and a smaller iPod clipped to my top instead of the bulky armband. Since my trips out aren’t very long and my hubby knows my route, how long, etc. I go out without my phone. Not sure what I’ll do if I make it to the point of increased mileage and varied routes.
Great ideas! I just added the 405 to my Christmas list. I’ve been reading reviews on all the different Garmin options, and that one seems to fit best with my needs… one question though… does it track elevation? Also, BICBands rule!
Reply
Leah November 21, 2011 at 10:39 am
What about those Nike arm warmers? Do they make your list? I think I want them but only if they actually keep you warm.
The BIC Bands are great, I ordered three and of course name dropped you. I haven’t had anyone ask me about them yet but then running on a personal treadmill I don’t think anyone cares. My oldest used one in her soccer tournament and all the girls were asking where she got it and I have to say the thing does not budge and I love that they do not have that “rubber” backing that most “no slip” bands do. I plan on ordering even more soon and these would make a great Christmas gift and at 10.00 they are affordable, and I really only consider them 9.00 since 1.00 from each goes to a charity. Love them!!!
RoseRunner November 21, 2011 at 9:27 pm
SR…………….SR, SR, SR. I guess I’m the only commenter who sees through this stuff, but goodness it feels so yucky sometimes to read all this advertising. My strong hunch: you got paid for Gotein, PickyBar, Bic Band, and the tile coasters. (I don’t believe for one second that you would actually buy yourself the tiles). I do, however, believe that you actually personally endorse (unpaid) the Garmin and the Gu. Money is great and all, but you earned your readership from quality, funny, interesting posts. At least 1/3 of all posts are ads now.
:(
Reply
Brandy November 21, 2011 at 9:41 pm
I hardly find her blog 1/3 ads, possibly endorsements and there is nothing wrong with that or reviews. I mean if she makes some money in the process what is the big deal, she writes plenty of personal entries and others geared towards what she knows about the products she uses or tests for companies. I would not be surprised at all to know she bought the coasters herself as it is a neat idea. There are plenty of “funny, interesting” post here and there are several blogs where they spend hours doing their entries and if they want to endorse products and make some money or get a discount there is nothing wrong with that.
Reply
SkinnyRunner November 21, 2011 at 9:59 pm
then quit reading. plain and simple.
and your hunch is incorrect.
Reply
RoseRunner November 22, 2011 at 10:36 am
I won’t quit reading, because I love the other 70% of the blog. I weed through the ads, or “endorsements”, and occasionally get frustrated enough that I comment about all this fluff.
I’ve been a reader since the very beginning — I can’t even remember, sometime in early 2009 I would guess. I’m pointing out that the blog has changed. I will probably drop out of here at some point, and trust me I know you don’t care with your 100,000 hits a day. I believe these ads will probably pay off for you. I’m seeing a a book deal or a cover on Runners World in your future, who knows.
I am the reader. I am who these companies and ads are directed at. And although no one else seems to care, as a reader I’m voicing that the products pimped on blogs make me sigh — never make me want to go out and buy it. Sure, I’ll enter a free giveaway (which as a non-tweeter, I technically can’t most of the time), but I won’t be buying. In the meantime, I will continue to weed through….
I really need to make the switch to some running clothes, but I think in my head I’m still the dancer girl…hard habit to break, I am still a little too self conscious for spandex but maybe I’ll give it another try. You make them look good (not in a weird way).
I did finally get some sparkly headbands, though I forget to wear them. Jessica
What a fabulous idea to put protein powder in oatmeal! This just might get me to like oatmeal. Do you just buy the plain ol’ Quakers stuff or do you buy a flavor? Do you use the whole package of GoTein per bowl?
Do you wear the heart rate monitor with your Garmin? It looks like it would be uncomfortable and drive into your skin. I’m just curious because I can’t decide between buying the regular 405 (which comes with the heart rate monitor) or the water resistant 405 (which you have to purchase the heart rate monitor separately for).
