{I was so tired last night we got into bed at 8pm! I fell asleep at 10 and didn’t wake up until nearly 8am. That’s some power napping right there}
The NYC Marathon Race Experience…
Saturday night we got into town at 8pm; the expo closed at 7 so we had to go to the downtown NYRR head office to pick up my bib. Long story short that involved some football, we didn’t get to bed until 11:30pm.
Wake up was 4am so the hour savings was a lifesaver. cherry flavored. I had planned on taking the ferry to the start, but late Saturday night I received an email from Elizabeth C. with NYRR asking me if I’d like to take one of their Team For Kids busses at 6am instead.
Ummm yes please. I would have had to take a subway across town to the ferry which takes you to a bus. Thank you, Elizabeth! another lifesaver.
There were 22 TFK coach busses and we even got a police escort! What impressed me was that everyone working was so friendly – I had to talk to a couple different people to get my bus assignment and even at 5:45am, they were all really nice.
Team For Kids raises money to provide fitness and health programs for children who would otherwise not have the opportunity, and they raised over $4 million through the NYC Marathon this year.
We got to the start village around 7:30am – this thing is a city in itself. Each of the three color waves has its’ own village and then there’s the charity tents, VIP tents, it’s huge. You can’t really imagine how big it is until you’re there walking around trying to find someone. good luck with that.
With my TFK bracelet, I could get into the Charity Village so I walked in there to check it out; it was nearly the same thing as everything else but way less crowded.
Inside the Charity Village each charity had its’ own tent with coffee and areas to sit.
And TFK bathrooms! no lines!
There was a nice little spread of Gatorade, bagels, water and Powerbars as well. I had breakfast and then went in search of Miles and HRG and who ever else I could find.
I found Miles who could be my only male Australian reader. He’s also the head choreographer for Thunder from Down Under.
Just kidding. NYC was his first marathon last year and he ran a 3:30! More importantly, his wife is 9 months pregnant with their first child – we thought we might see him dash off the course at any minute to head to the hospital.
And then I saw Keri and her dad who rocked the race together; Keri runs some insanely fast short races.
And ran into these two hotties in their sweatshirts: Jaime and Penny. Thanks for saying hi; I know you guys were eyeing my bathrobe and wanted one.
The corral closed at 8:50 for the 9:40 start so I got into my corral (10) a few minutes early and finally saw Janae and Miles again who were in corral #9. Yes, I did feel like the slow kid that nobody likes waiting behind the rope.
But they dropped the corral ropes and we walked forward so I got to hang out with them as we waited for the start and took off our lovely throwaways which are all donated to charity. Although I’m pretty sure no one wants my bathrobe.
The weather was amazing; last year was really cold and this year was sunny and warm. And last weekend they had snow so I was really thankful for a beautiful morning.
Last year the time seemed to creep by before the race; I felt like I was waiting for hours and hours; this year because I was talking with new friends and meeting people, it flew by and suddenly it was time to start.
My plan was to simply to run according to how I felt; I told Jaymo to give me 4 hours. My calves were a little sore and I was sleepy tired but other than that, felt fine.
Frank Sinatra’s New York, New York song played and we were off! Miles took off ahead of us and HRG and I just kinda unspokenly ran with each other. Not that words weren’t spoken… we talked the entire race. I’m surprised we could barely breath.
The first mile was up the Verrazono-Narrows Bridge; we ran the first 5k in 25:57/8:22 pace. We met speedy Dana who was cruising by fast (did I get your name right, I hope?)
The day was beautiful, the course was packed with runners and spectators, it’s just an awesome race. That sounds so lame, I know, but it’s hard to describe how rad it is.
It was sunny out and even a little on the warm side by the end so I was grabbing a water or Gatorade at every aid station as was HRG. We ran the 10k in 51:21/8:16 pace.
Once we realized that we each had a running partner who wasn’t going anywhere, HRG and I made it clear to each other that it was perfectly fine for the other to take off or drop back – she was running with 6 weeks of training and I was coming off a marathon from the day before.
But the thing about running with someone who’s faster than you is that it encourages you to run fast. It’s like girls playing sports with boys; yes, Janae, I’m calling you a boy.
We also met another reader; sorry I forgot your name. I’m dumb but took a sweet pic of ya!
I would have never started out as fast as we did had I not been running with Janae; I would have never ran a 3:36. Not that I couldn’t obviously, but I doubted myself and it took someone else there to push me.
I took a gel at mile 9, was drinking a lot of Gatorade (I swear the aid stations were less than a mile apart sometimes) and we hit the 15k at the same 8:16 pace.
We were talking about everything, neither of us listened to music (I didn’t even bring mine) and the miles ticked by fast. It was one of those races that felt surreal – you’re running the biggest marathon (and biggest NYCM EVER) in the world with a runner who you never thought you’d be able to keep up with with a million people who don’t know you cheering like they do. it’s crazy.
We hit the halfway at 1:47:58/8:14 pace. We again told each other to take off, but internally I couldn’t believe I was hanging on and running that fast. could not believe it.
I took another gel around mile 15 or so; my fueling got a little messed up because I didn’t bring 4 gels like I normally do and then I dropped one, but it turned out fine: I ate a piece of banana later in the race, a piece of licorice and one more gel.
We kept throwing down, talking and enjoying the different boroughs and crowds of NYC. 25K at 2:07:53/8:13 pace.
Mile 16 you come off a long bridge onto First Avenue and everyone’s cheering for you – it’s deafening. It’s so exciting, this is the moment why you run, for this feeling.
Unfortunately the race still has 10 more miles to pound out of you so we kept at it. It was getting warmer but not bad; I was drinking a lot of fluids and trying to keep up with speedy. We hit the 20 mile marker at 2:43:29/8:10 pace.
We made it to Central Park around mile 22 which was beautiful with the leaves and fun with all the people cheering. Even though it feels like you’re really close to the finish, you still have a ways to go. And there’s small rolling hills; you can’t even see them but you can feel them.
40K and almost there in 3:24:46/8:14 pace.
We cruised to the finish (which, like the whole race, is so exciting with the bandstands and all the people cheering you on down the funnel) and finished in 3:36:30, average pace of 8:15.
HRG had never ran more than 10 miles without music and I couldn’t believe that I could hold a 8:15 pace for the race so we were just two sweaty turds standing there in disbelief.
The race experience was really amazing. It wasn’t as surprising as last year since I had done it and seen it all but still amazing and over-the-top. It was a lot of fun to run with someone and not have any pressure to perform but at the same time, perform beyond what I believed I could.
It was a great day. mostly because of this….

You seriously amaze me. Both you and Janae inspire me so much. That seems like such a surreal experience.
DYLAN’S CANDY BAR! best way to end the race for SURE!
congrats sarah! awesome, awesome recap and race. you’re inspiring!
Sounds like an amazing race experience. Can’t wait to read HRG’s recap too! Also, I’m dying to see what kind of damage you two ladies did in that candy store
Awesome race recap!! I saw you shortly as you finished ( I was a volenteer) and you looks super strong!!
Amazing race. Amazing recap.
No further words required!

You girls are both my favorites, it’s so dang cool that you ran together. Way to go!!
You are so badass! Two marathons back to back and in the time you got. That’s so crazy. Congrats!
You both did awesome! Great pictures of the course!
It was so nice meeting you at Crumbs after the race! You and your husband are hilarious!!!
Red Rock half this March!!!!
Amazing race…I hope this isn’t creepy but I was tracking you while you ran. You were running at the same pace as one of my friends for the first 16 miles and then you ZOOMED off while he slowed down a little. Haha. Congrats again!
WOW. Two Marathons back to back.. that’s insane. That is definitely one for the memory box – congrats!
Congratulations SR! Very inspiring!!
Congrats you had a great race. Love the pics!
This gave me chills, I can hardly imagine how awesome it felt for you two…a seriously big CONGRATS! Amazing.
I LOVED reading this!! I read HRG’s blog religiously and this was a great story!!! You two are STUDS!!!! And the fact that you got to run NYC together makes it even more fun! Loved it.
Great race report! I want to run this one so bad. I’m entering the lottery until I get in!
You guys did such an incredible job. I just got really excited reading this! I totally want to run NYC now!!!
I had a ton of fun tracking you guys!
It’s like all the super stars in one place. Can’t believe you managed to find that many of the blogger world gang in that huge crowd.
Congrats on a wonderful marathon, your body is capable of SO MUCH MORE than you would ever think!
Fantastic job! And YES to Dylan’s candy bar. One millions yes-es.
Awesome job! Congrats on back-to-back marathons!
Congratulations! my apt is located on 1st ave and I have THE BEST marathon view. Sadly, I was out of town this year and missed it
. Love that you ended the day at Dylan’s. No better way to end a perfect day.
Haha, I can’t believe you ran a race with another person
Good job!
Congrats! I was one of those people cheering on 1st Ave
Great race recap AWESOME pace! you literally smoked it. SOOOOO cool that you ran the whole thing /w HRG. I actually prefer running /w out music in a race and/or when running /w someone.
LOVE it….and your bathrobe was worth the ENVY
haha
i’m so geeked up on both of you! i was wondering if you would see each other in NYC>> you are a beast! congrats!
Congratulations! Thanks for the great race recap, it totally reminded me WHY I love races: all of the cheering and the excitement and the great feeling at the end! Sometimes during long training, it is easy to forget that finish line feeling!
Fantastic job! I love that you had a powerbar for breakfast – that is my morning run meal of choice as well, except I do peanut butter.
I will definitely have to tackle NYC sometime in the near future!
oh my goodness you are so amazing. i got a little teary eyed reading about all the cheering and the whole experience. im so glad you did so well and that the Lord provided support for you in unexpected ways! recover well and enjoy NY!
I love this recap and the time breakdowns. I felt like I was there, cheering you both on from the sidelines! Amazing job to you both!!!
Congrat’s on you TWO marathon’s! Dang Gina! I love that you and Janae ran together. Your blog and her blog are my favorite one’s to read, and for some reason I’m really happy that you guys ran together… I know that I’m really creepy like that. But it makes happy that you two are friends! Seriously though, good job.
YOU ARE A SUPERSTAR! I wanna be like you when I grow up. Awesome race! loved your recap!! i didn’t too do shabby on my first marathon race…5:42 ;/ now I gotta sign up for another now and aim to do faster and better.
Thanks for all of your inspiration and motivation which helped me continue in my own race.
YOU are AHHH MAAAA ZZZZING! I love the re cap. How do you feel today?
Great recap
I’m so excited for the two of you!
Seriously, when I read that you were doing back to backs, I kept thinking that you were cray-zay. Now I realize that you just kind of rock, way to kill it SR!!!! I think NYCM has become my holy grail, I REALLY want to run it! Congrats again!
Congratulations to you and HRG-you both are amazing runners. It looked like a gorgeous day in the Big Apple.
You ladies ROCKED IT!! Congrats on a spectacular finish to a double marathon weekend!!
Hmm, let me see if I have this right:
You ran a marathon on Saturday, and in another marathon the next day you finished about 11 minutes behind male OLYMPIAN Apolo Anton Ohno. You are the bomb! And you didn’t even have friggin Subway taking care of your training and such. They should sponsor you next year.
Great job at both Savannah and New York!
I’m a fairly new reader to your blog, but it’s quickly become one of my favorites (okay, my favorite but didn’t want you to get too excited!).
Thanks for sharing all of your race experiences. As a fairly new runner (less than a year!), I really appreciate the wonderful tips from you and all of your readers!
this is such an awesome post. I can’t believe you and HRG were able to stay together the entire time. I just ran my first 5k and plan to run my first 1/2 early next year. When you do your races, do you run straight through? Even when you grab the water or Gatorade? I’ve heard that you almost have to stop at the water tables because of the crowd that accumulates.
yes i run the whole time but grab a water/gatorade at nearly ever aid station and drink it while running. but a lot of people walk through water stations which is great too, whatever works for you!
You are amazing!!!!
Congrats. You are a machine, running two marathons in two days. I take my hat off to you!
Holy smokes. That is seriously amazing!! COngrats to you both, speedy runners!
I can’t believe you did 2 fast marathons in a row….that is AWESOME.
Holy moly..you are absolutely AMAZING!
Whoa, I bet you’re tired! Congrats for both the fast run-times…it looks like a hard(long) race!
Way to go SkinnyRunner! You’re amazing!! Sounds like an awesome race, very fun and interesting to read about your weekend.
That’s so awesome! Sounds like a fantastic race and you totally killed it, especially since it was a second marathon in two days. You rock, girl!
Great recap, like your best ever. Well maybe tied with when you ran with your brother. I got all teary-eyed and proud! Like you were my kid or my sister or something. I’m a dork.
I thought I was done for the year, but I’m looking this moment at what races I can afford the rest of the year! Thank you for the inspiration! I never was into reading blogs before til I found yours and the Reese’s blog. Candy/running/my doggie = my loves. My dude is OK too, but you know what I mean.
Long time reader, first comment – you are completely hard core and I love it, well done on your 2 races this weekend, and your running in general. Being from Australia I’m completely jealous about the number of marathons you have in the US. We have maybe 3 ‘big’ ones a year (if big is 5000 or so runners!). Will have to get over there to run the NYC circus one day…
simply…AWESOME!! BIG CONGRATS to YOU & HRG!!! luv both of you!!
Looking forward to NYCM 2012!! Sounds like it’s going to be a very memorable marathon!!
Now…rest, eat, rest…THAT’S an order!!
Congratulations!!! Thanks for sharing so much of your experience with your readers. It’s so inspiring for a new runner like myself to see what hard work can accomplish!
Congrats girl! Your amazing!!!
I am in awe of you!!! I was literally crying at mile 18 and I thought to myself, SR just finished many hours ahead of you AND it’s her second one in two days!
I’m most bummed that we didn’t get to meet up, but I’ll be posting pictures of my Italian Stallion on the blog soon…spandex and all!
You rock! Glad you had a good race and enjoyed it! Hope you get to enjoy NYC while you’re here as well.
Oh, I hadn’t realized you were raising money for a charity! You should have posted about that more frequently! That’s so awesome!!!
I have the same thoughts about Central Park — feels like you’re basically done, but oh you’re not…
Congrats on an awesome double!
What a fabulous experience and so glad you had a buddy to run with. I’m sure you both were encouraging and supportive throughout the race! back-to-back marathons! WOW!
I’d like to tell you how AWESOME you are! I just ran 14.5 miles in prep for my first 1/2 on Thanksgiving here in the ATL. I hurt like nobody’s business and in no way could go out and d0 the same tomorrow. I applaud you for running back to back marathons. I want to be you when I grow up (even though I’m probably older than you)!!!! You ROCK!!!!!
miles is NOT your only Australian reader! I found your blog through Janae’s and I love it! You should be proud of your achievement!
Looks like such an amazing experience!! And two marathons in two days…girl you may be a little crazy
You are pretty much Superwoman in my book – 2 back-to-back marathons!! Congrats!!!
Congrats on two awesome back to back marathons! I even told my mom about you and she was like WHOA, that lady MUST be skinny haha
It was so fun to see you and HRG during the race! Thanks for posting my ugly mug on your blog.
Congrats on two solid marathons in two days – pretty amazing!
The picture I got of you is of your lower half ha….sorry about that one:) SO GOOD TO MEET YOU!! What did you think of the race?
Hey Janae! Congrats on your race! I loved the whole experience – the crowds, the course, the weather, and meeting you guys made for an awesome day.
I just love reading your marathon recaps. You make it all sound so thrilling and rosy. I never feel like you’ve just run 26 miles when you write. It’s always so entertaining. I am so impressed with your times. I might have run that pace in a 5K ONCE in my life. I do know that feeling of having a great run and a day where it’s just your day, but they are so very rare. Keep us informed, I just love what you write!!!
So inspiring! I am so glad that you had a wonderful time and a great partner to race with. An amazing effort all around and what a memory to have
SO excited to see you & Janae ran together….my 2 favorite bloggers in one place! Running together!! Suh-weet!! Glad y’all both had such a great race. It’s very obvious y’all both enjoyed it & I’m glad it was such a good race for both of you….loved both of your race recaps! Y’all are both just so stinkin’ cute!! I tried to look as pretty as possible during my race cuz I knew there would be lots of pics, but somehow I just didn’t manage to stay as ‘fresh’ looking as y’all do. ha!
My friend & I looked for you in Savannah….you finished really close to one of our other friends & most likely started in her corral. Oh well, maybe another race (we won’t do Savannah again either….)….That was my first of many!
Wait, you do have another Australian reader….Mwah from Sydney! Have been laughing weekly at your posts
And while I haven’t yet any marathons under my belt, you’ve definitely inspired me to run and enjoy it…although last Sunday’s 10km Fun Run in 30+ degree heat (86 Fahrenheit) was not so enjoyable. Congrats on your last two marathons.
You are not even human. Amazeballs! I have no freakin’ idea how you can run 2 marathons in 2 days much less rock NYC like you did. I’ve run several marathons and every time I need to take weeks off after. I am sooo freakin’ biomechanically unsound. This sounds totally creepy, but I want your biomechanics lol
Oh my gawd. That was me in the pink headband that stopped to say hello to you and Janae. Luckily in that short time you were able to capture me making a hideous but oh so typical face. You guys are awesome and did great!! It was amazing to meet you both briefly and you totally just made my night when I saw the pic.
Great Job!!
CONGRATS! Sounds like a great run!! It’s on my bucket list for sure!!
i can’t believe u, u freaking rock! to run that fast two days in a row is amazing…and u guys doing it together is even more cool. talk about a power runner-blogger duo!
by the way, that top/necklace/headband u were rocking was a super cute outfit! i’m jealous that u can look that good even all sweaty.
congrats girl! you are incredible.
I am seriously impressed with 2 marathons in 2 days!!! You are such an inspiration!
Congrats on the finish.
You girls motivate me get up each cold, frigid, east coast morning and put foot to pavement.
But one question for ya, where are the finisher’s medal shots?
Love your blog!
