WORKOUT – Ran 15.0 miles/2:16 easier pace, sore muscles, no music
I ran the first 5 miles/49 mins with my friend Katie; we went longer than we normally do and no walk breaks, woohoo! And more importantly, she just saw Keith Richards.
After that I planned on doing about 5-7 more but when I realized I had enough time, I went for the double digits. My legs were pretty dead by mile 8 – my butt and thighs are pretty sore from yesterday. Speaking of that….
Yesterday I went to my first exercise class in over 5 years. seriously. And to be fair, I would have kept the streak going if I hadn’t been invited to check out a Physique 57 class in Beverly Hills.
Sporting my Rock On! Dylan Flinchum Foundation shirt in my Pepto Bismal office.
The only thing I knew about Physique 57 was that Kelly Ripa raved about it and she’s sorta in shape… personally, I’m more into saggy bat wing arms, inner thigh flab and cottage cheese cellulite but to each their own.
Unfortunately, there’s only 2 locations: New York City (4) and Beverly Hills.
I’ve haven’t tried either, but I think Physique 57 might be similar to certain elements of Cardio Barre and Pilates classes; it’s all about tiny isometric movements using your own body weight and other items like a ball, mat, and balance bar.
Our exercise studio – everyone gets a place at the bar; most of the room had mirrors which was nice if you’re me and love to stare at yourself.
From the website,
Physique 57®’s interval sets use your body’s own weight as resistance, and through dynamic exercises, your muscles are targeted and overloaded to the point of fatigue, then stretched for relief.
And that’s exactly what happened to me – my muscles were fatigued. I had to stop a couple times because my thighs were quivering so much; it was a little embarrassing how out of shape I felt. And it was a beginners class too!
It’s a completely different workout than what I’m used to (running), but I really liked it. The hour flew by and even though it was difficult, the teacher (Katie) was super helpful and encouraging – I liked that she walked around and tweaked each of our forms so that a move went from “Oh, this hurts so good” to “OMG, I want to saw off my leg to make the pain stop!”
If I lived closer to LA, I’d want to take a class more often. Basically so I could look like these Physique 57 lovers:
There’s also DVDs of the workout as well; has anyone tried them or a class?

Would you take a second and go vote for Maid in AK for the Circle of Moms Top 25 Food Allergy Blogs?
I went to school with Megan in Alaska and she’s a sweet mom who has many food allergies (her recipes are gluten, dairy, corn, soy, potato, tomato, peanut, and (mostly) refined sugar free) and still manages to create healthy, tasty meals for her family.
Thanks for voting for her!

Would love to take a class like that. BH is too far of a drive, darn it. Sore = get to eat lots of extra goodies to recover
Going to vote for Megan!
Hey SR,
I’ve taken a class like this before, or taken a class that seems very similar. I took it at a place called Pure Barre in Austin. You should check their site out and see if it’s anything like the one you took/ closer to where you live. http://purebarre.com/p-california.html
I just went to happy hour last night with a couple of friends who tried out these classes and said they were SO uncomfortable and hard. And they are both in great shape so you aren’t alone! She said the exact thing about the thigh exercises too!
I’ve taken those kinds of classes and would go to more… if I had more $$$. I bought a few DVDs with similar workouts and am in the process of reviewing them.
Man, I’d love to try one of those classes. I’m a cardio nut, so it’s hard for me to do those still poses because I feel like I’m not getting a good workout. That doesn’t seem to be the case with Physique 57. And to look like Kelly Ripa? Hell yeah!
I did The Bar Method and have the DVDs as well. It was fun, it’s on the less expensive end of the bar classes, it’s the original program and it’s hot in California!
I went to a Bar Method class. Yeah, it burned so bad. I wanted to saw both legs off. Then they come around and correct you and MAKE IT HURT WORSE. Crazy ladies. I couldn’t walk normally for 3 days.
Thanks for helping me break the streak of walking… and thanks for not leaving streak marks in your pants… oh wait, maybe that’s me ?
Sounds like a great class. I can’t say I’d be sad to look like Kelly!
Physique 57 sounds amazing! Who doesn’t want to look like that?! lol… If I weren’t in college (read: I’m poor) I would probably buy a couple of the dvds to try
I read on another blog that the Physique 57 DVDs are great! Maybe you should look into those.
way to go SR! does that mean spinning is in the cards next?
I love workout classes but hate the first time trying it…I always feel like an idiot since I don’t know the moves yet!!
Random Q but do you happen to know the shade of pink paint on your office wall? I’ve been crazy looking for a nice pink and I really like that color!
i dont know but i could hunt around in our garage and see what i find. but i do that it took 2 coats. ill get back to ya.
I have been SO curious about those classes.
THANK YOU FOR SPORTING your Dylan RockOn Shirt!
You are awesome and it is so cute. I will be sporting mine at my first half marathon 4 months post baby this weekend. Hoping Dylan and his determination can get me to that finish line!
I love Physique57 classes! I used to take them a lot when I lived in NYC. It helped me get into seriously sexy shape before my wedding! Now that I’ve moved to Boston, I rely on their DVDs and Bar Method which just opened up here. The DVDs are great when you can’t make it to the classes or don’t want to shell out the money (those classes are pricey!) for them. Try buying them online at qvc (they sell them cheaper I think than the physique website) or look out for when they go on sale on gilt (just bought their volume 2 DVDs on gilt this week!).
I am a P57 addict. The DVDs that is. I’ve never found an at-home workout video so effective, I absolutely love it! I can’t wait to try one of their classes in person one day. Or, when I win the lottery, go on a retreat:
http://www.physique57.com/retreats.htm
one day!!
I have done the DVDs….it seriously hurts so badly, but they tone areas that running doesn’t.
I love Physique 57! I used the DVD’s first, then tried the studio when they added the Beverly Hills location– and I’m totally hooked. It’s a bit of a drive for me, but totally worth the results!
That class sounds kind of insanely awesome! I love feeling sore after trying new exercises.
I voted!
I’ve never tried it, but now I want to! I’ll have to get the dvds though since I don’t live anywhere near L.A. or NY.
Oh my god those Physique bodies. I would fly to LA just to sit next to Elle´s matress trying to steal some her BODY.
I love barre class! A friend introduced me to Booty Barre in June and I’ve been hooked ever since. I’m so hooked I’m even getting certified as a group fitness instructor next month so I can teach Booty Barre someday. I also created a blog to talk about my progress (shapedforfitness.wordpress.com). And I have to say that your blog helped inspire me too.
If you want to check out Booty Barre there’s a great studio off the 73 on Newport Coast Drive called Living Fitness that has it and 2 other classes, FitBar and Piloxing. Love it!
a) I live in the middle of nowhere so I’ve never gotten to do anything like this.
b) I was a model on LIVE with Regis and Kelly last year, and I can tell you that Kelly’s body is sick. I mean awesome sick. Like I would hurt 23 out of 24 hours a day if my body could look like that.
c) Keep in mind Physique 57 is not the ONLY thing Kelly Ripa does for fitness; she runs, works out with a personal trainer, etc.
d) KR is just as pretty on the inside as she is on the outside! probably like SR, but I haven’t gotten to meet her in person yet.
Woo hoo! Congrats on snapping the streak. Toning and stretching are neglected with long distance running, so I feel you on the fatigue part.
Come to my class when you are in Eastern WA!
OH MY GOODNESS!! Sarah! I saw all the links on my blog dashboard and was trying to figure out who in the world SR was. What a sweet, sweet surprise! You look incredible… and happy!
Thanks so much for giving my site a shout out! It was very unexpected and I’m very grateful!
Thank you!
Megan xoxo
I love the Physique 57 videos! Got them about a month ago and have been doing them 3-4 times a week (on top of running 4 times a week). I can really tell in my butt, arms and abs! LOVE THEM!
This sounds EXACTLY like a class we have here in Manila called Plana Forma. I tried it once, but found it too boring for my liking, but the concept and room looks the same, straps, weights, balls, cushion, bar…
http://forma-asia.com/
Physique57 sounds awesome. Super hard, but awesome. If I struggle through mixed level yoga classes, I have a feeling that would kick my butt! (Woohoo for the Maid in AK shoutout, by the way. I LOVE Megan and her family!)
i’ve been dying to try these dvds!!!! do you get uber sore?
yes, for a couple days after. especially my thighs!
I’ve never done Physique 57 or their DVDs, but I have done Flybarre in NYC, which I think is similar. It was hard as hell. I wanted to announce, “I swear I’m in shape. I can run a lot, but this is really difficult.”
Love P57 Dvds. I also suggest buying them from QVC. They are a GREAT way to supplement running!
I voted! My son had 3 food allergies as a toddler (thankfully, all outgrown now!) and I’m sure her info is very helpful to those dealing with that!
My friend and I went to a Physique 57 class in Austin when they were doing a tour type thing. It was so hard. My thighs were seriously on fire. We couldn’t stop laughing during the abs portion because we kept losing our balls. I have some of the DVDs too (Volume 2) and they are pretty similiar to the class we took.
I LOVE physique57!! it’s a few blocks from my office, but SO expensive : (
I looooove Physique!!! i used to be a big bar method girl and was scared to attempt p57. thought i had to work my way up. turns out my strategy worked great. 3 months of bar moving into a few pop physique classes and THEN doing p57 was perfect. i tell pretty much everyone who will listen about physique (so, yes, all the people who commented above that they want to try it … do it!!). i can’t personally vouch for the DVDs but i’ve heard great things. and it’s expensive but i adore it so much that i budget it in every month!
How did I miss this post? I ADORE Physique 57 and have both sets of the DVDs at home. I agree that as a runner who is physically fit, you go in expecting it to be a cake walk and you can barely press the gas pedal when you leave in your car. Luckily it’s not one of those things where you leave thinking “that really sucked, I’ll never do it again.” You get sort of addicted with the first class and don’t realize it’s an hour long. And the DVDs are fantastic. Expensive but worth it. Has anyone bought the book?
