Fall races, my favorite

by SkinnyRunner on September 6, 2011

Everyone loves fall for some reason or another… football, color changing leaves and Hypercolor shirts…or not

…every single food item being pumpkin flavored, back to school or as I call it, getting rid of your kids for 8 hrs a day of free babysitting, and most importantly, race season.

old emergency t-shirt

Fall/Winter is a great time for running races because of the cooler weather; when the weather gets warmer than 55* you start slowing down and have to work harder so fall/winter is perfect for races especially in places like Florida and Texas.

And most importantly a fall marathon greatly decreases your chances of getting funky sports bra tan lines.  Vanity first.

Are you planning a fall or winter half or full marathon?  Which one?

If you’re still looking for one, check out the inaugural BCS Marathon in College Station, Texas on December 11th.

What’s really cool is that the race director Chris and his wife started a non-profit organization called Mercy Project to rescue children from slavery in third world countries, and the race benefits it and another charity as well.

All hail the return of Cat lady Blogs!, a segment I do showcasing other blogs and giving them some post space.  The name came from me saying something about I’m not the only cool cat in the crazy cat lady’s house. or something equally dumb and unoriginal.

Today’s featured blogging beauty is Gina who’s been a longtime reader and loyal commenter on SR:

“Hey Hey! My name is Gina and I blog over at Will Run for Cupcakes. I would like to call myself a healthy living blog, but the truth is that most of my healthy living is exercise; the rest is beer and cupcakes. I started blogging to hold myself accountable for maintaining some type of running/workout regime. I’ve found it keeps me honest and the support of this community is A-M-A-Z-I-N-G!

Just me. No big deal!

Help a sister out!

After completing my second half marathon in April 2011 I decided I was going to embark on something that I have always wanted to do; run a marathon.

I signed up for the ING NYC marathon lottery and didn’t get a slot. Shortly after I was presented with an opportunity to join Team For Kids and run the marathon as part of their organization.

The boyfriend and I

IMG_2468

I jumped at the opportunity because

a.      I wanted to run NYC

and

b.      I wanted to help out a phenomenal cause.

My original goal of setting out to make myself accountable for running on the blog has turned into a documentation of my marathon training. You might also read about some other fun stuff like cupcakes, the love of my life, and a slight obsession with reality TV (don’t tell anyone).

It’s not all running!!!

Through my marathon endeavor, it is my goal to raise $2620 dollars for Team For Kids. Skinny Runner has given me a HUGE platform as a featured Cat Lady to go above and beyond. I know with everyone’s hectic schedules it may not always be easy to donate time/money to help out a complete stranger, but here is a quick and easy way to do it:

If each of you were to donate $1, $2, or even $5 it would make a world of difference in these children’s lives.  You’ll provide low cost/free fitness opportunities for children who would otherwise be unable to afford it.

Donate for the kids. Thanks. Love, Molly

Let’s help them learn about fitness and healthy living before they find themselves at age 27 training for their first marathon just so they can fit into their skinny jeans, like me.

Oh, and when all else fails…have a cupcake :)

Go check out Gina’s blog and her donation page as well.  Take a second and donate a dollar or two (it’s tax deductible!); I just did. and now I think it’s cupcake time…  Thanks Gina for the email!

No running races for me this year – maybe a 5k but that’s about all my old lady knees can handle. I would, however, like to find a triathlon or some other sport to race in. There’s gotta be something like that in the Fall down here in the South, right?

Are you going to be designing more t-shirts? I’ve gotten so many comments on my “punch” shirt. People LOVE it.

I realized yesterday that my first marathon is just a month away! I’m really hoping the weather cools down and the humidity goes away by then!

Fall is my favorite time of year to run. Perfect weather. I’m training for my first marathon in November, so I’m stoked to see the temperature dropping off a bit. Hate running in the heat.

I signed up for a bunch of winter races but I truly dislike winter training. Virginia had an unusually cold winter and I was miserable last year! I’ll have to suck it up though because I signed up for the Outer Banks Marathon, Las Vegas Half, Miami Marathon, and LA Marathon.

I’m about to sign up for my 2nd half this fall, the Philly half marathon at the end of November. There really isn’t a better time of year to run, I love long runs in fall weather!

Running my second half in December! The White Rock Marathon in Dallas, TX. Hope to break two hours this year! I hope to do a couple more this race season as well. Cowtown in Feb in Ft Worth and one in Kansas City in April! So glad for the cooler weather – I have been forced to run on the treadmill here in Dallas all summer! It is only supposed to be like 85 today so that is amazing!

Emily September 6, 2011 at 6:01 am

Haha, love the free babysitting comment – I have said that too!

Dallas White Rock marathon – December 4 – my first! Doing two halves (Heels & Hills & Him in Sept and 13.1 series in October) that coincide with the 12/13 mile long run weeks.

I’m doing Savannah in November. My first marathon ever! Training in the heat in Florida SUCKS. I think you’re doing Savannah too, right? If you see a tall blonde stalking you in the creepiest manner possible, that’s just me too scared to say hi. ;-)

Yay so glad you are back safe and sound, Miss SR!! It’s like my favorite celeb magazine subscription came back online ;) .

I’m doing the R&R half in LA and maybe some run-bike combo.

I am running my FIRST half marathon in Memphis on December 3rd of this year. It is the St. Jude Marathon. I will admit that I have not been training like I should and need to get my act together….quick.

Gig’em aggies!! I wish I could do that half! I bought my first car at Atkinson Toyota.
Being a native of Fl and then a Tx resident I think it’s still a bit early to talk about Fall in those states . . . Dec-Jan-Feb are the best times to race in those states imo.

So glad you are back! I am running the Marine Corps Marathon the end of October. It’s my first marathon in 7 years…and training is just about to amp up. It’s been quite toasty all summer so the cool days are making my runs more fun. I miss the early sunrises though because running in the dark makes me a tad bit nervous.

That’s so funny that you mention the BCS half. I live in Bryan/College Station. I’m still doing the Dallas White Rock Marathon because it is a bigger race and more scenic. There isn’t much to see here in BCS especially since the course doesn’t even touch south College Station and a first year race is usually pretty lonely. It’s good to see a race going to a good cause on a more positive note!!! I may try to do the half of it though. It depends on how I feel after the marathon.
Fall is great! I love everything Fall/Winter!!!

I love fall/winter races. Fall/winter is my favorite time to bake, cuddle, and run! :)

Looks like us SoCal peeps are in for some “bikram running” this week (if you’re not out early!). We’re are going to be in the triple digits here in the valleys!

Love Gina’s platform! Such a great cause!! :) You Go GINA!!

BTW…if you want to see a great movie go see the “Help”…seriously, so good! People in the theatre clapped after the show. #1 in box office 3 weeks in a row…probably an Oscar contender!

See you in the Aloha state next week chica!!! :) xo

I’m running Marine Corps Marathon for the Semper Fi Fund! I’m running with a few friends, including my friends husband who will be home from Afghanistan VERY soon!

After that, I’m running the Holiday Half in Portland. Did it last year, did not do well, seeking redemption this year. And other cowbell medal.

3 races here as well; 2 would be considered Fall I guess.

Chicago (full marathon)
Dallas White Rock (full marathon)
Houston (full marathon)

I’ve never done anything like this, so heres to hoping I can actually pull it off!

Fairly new reader here and I also LOVE Fall! I hardly did any running here in Ohio over the summer because it was sweltering hot in the 90s the whole time. I’m so relieved it’s cooling down now and I’m looking forward to every aspect of the next 2-3 months of this season.
I have two half marathons scheduled for the next month or so and perhaps a few smaller races, too. I will be doing the Indian Run 20K in Hocking Hills, OH. and then the Columbus Half Marathon in October…both will be my first halfies! I’m excited…and nervous:P

I’m training for my first half marathon, which is coming up ever so quickly, on October 9th. (Staten Island, NY)

I’ve never been too excited for summer to be over but since I started running the cooler weather seems like a god send!

This fall I’ll be running 2 half marathons (both in TX) and my first full, Marine Corps Marathon. After training in this hothothot Texas heat (70+ days of 100+ weather, no rain since May), running in DC come October will feel GLORIOUS! I don’t care if it’s 40 at the start – I’ll gladly take it!

yep, doing the san antonio half again this year. running has been brutal thus far but i’ve kept it up. today’s lunch run was a nice change as the weather has actually cooled a bit.

take care

I’m doing the Columbus Full in the middle of October…. which means there is a good chance it could be 90 degrees and humid or 30 degrees and rainy…. gotta love central Ohio weather… not!

Alexis September 6, 2011 at 11:57 am

I love fall, but here in Michigan things get cool quickly, so it makes me nervous. This is my first year training and I’m not looking forward to cooler temps! I ran today in about 64 degrees and it was nice, but I actually like the 75 degrees more.

I’m planning to do another 5k (just ran my first aug 6) in 3 weeks and maybe squeeze in another before the year is over. Then I’ll probably be confined to the treadmill once snow starts. Which sucks. I love outside running!

I’m running my 2nd half marathon in December, the White Rock in Dallas. Joined a running club a few weeks back and it has been a big kick in the pants for me, as opposed to training on my own for my first one. I don’t lolly-gag around on the long run days…like taking a nap, eating cookies, watching Law & Order…I have to get there and do it because they are waiting on me. Hoping to improve on my time for this one too. And hope to maybe do a full next year.

Gracie (complicated day) September 6, 2011 at 1:47 pm

I just randomly signed up for a marathon at the end of September (I gave myself 4 weeks to train, should be a big fat PW). I signed up for 2 half marathons and a ten miler in October, and I am pondering a crappy local full marathon in November. There is a half in December we always do, then I have a full and a 30k in early January. That wraps things up until my next marathon in March. If you find any deals in November, pass them on – I feel like those weekends look a little empty.

Erin September 6, 2011 at 2:06 pm

St. Jude half marathon in Memphis, first Saturday in December! Thanks for the motivation, SR!

Reply

Sarah September 6, 2011 at 5:34 pm

If all goes as planned, I’m running the Marine Corps Marathon in October (my first!)

I’m also running a 5k this weekend (sponsored by Chick-fil-a… yeah, promise of endless waffle fries to “refuel” me after my “grueling” 3.12 miles took A LOT of convincing), a 20-mile race the weekend of 9/17 (for marathon training), and maybe a five or ten mile trail run in November.

Oh, and I’m also signed up for the Rock n’ Roll National Half in March (I was/am scared I’ll never want to do another full again after Marine Corps, not gonna lie.)

meghan September 6, 2011 at 6:11 pm

You go girl! It’s awesome that you’re running NYC with a charity! I will have run a few halves by the time for the NYC drawing this year, and I’m totally thinking about entering…it makes me so nervous to even think about it…ah! Good luck raising your moneys!

I love running in the fall. My race calendar is full this year – two half marathons in Dallas (one in Oct, one in Nov) and the RNR LV 1/2 in December. I’m sure I will also run a few 5Ks for fun during my training.
Can’t wait for the UR Summit in Vegas!
