WORKOUT - Ran in Sitka 7.6 miles/69 mins
Yesterday was my last run in Alaska; my dad and I are now headed south into Canada and eventually Oregon. The next time you hear from me I’ll be in Astoria, Oregon, hopefully. If I’m on wheel watch too long, we might end up in Costa Rica, which wouldn’t really be all that bad…
This is the first year that I’ve ran in Alaska while fishing, and I’ve been able to run in Kodiak, Homer and Sitka:
Besides being a little colder and wetter than I’m used to, it’s been nice to run a few miles here and there while in port. Definitely hasn’t kept me in shape but has kept me somewhat sane. I mean, I’m still upset I missed Kim Kardashian’s made-for-tv (and heaven) wedding, but I’m working through it along with a host of other issues.
And this would be an incredibly accurate map of where we’ve been with the boats all summer:
See you from the continental US!

**Hey go check out a short article by Linzay from BrokeRunner about getting your run in early because I’m featured in it and I sound like totally smart and stuff.

Nice article, the promise of mai-tais would keep me motivated too
WOAH you’ve been all over the place this summer..awesome!
Don’t worry, the broadcast of Kim’s wedding isn’t til October. You’ll still get to experience it with the rest of us
.
Have fun!!!
See you soon! We’ve missed you!
Super random., but I read SR’s blog on the regular & this morning around 5:20am I could’ve sworn my gf & I ran right by you (Pam) but in Corona. Maybe just a look alike but I recogonized you from SR’s blog
dang, that’s a lot of alaskan hopin! But glad you got in some running. Any bears?
Safe travels Sarah.
I ALWAYS run on vacation, makes me 50% sane, instead of 100% insane!
How cool that you are able to fit in some runs! I wish that I could set my internal alarm clock
Let the cat outta the bag with the beach and piña coladas, eh? ha ha ha.
Liked the map of where the boat’s been this summer. Is it me, or has it got wheels?
Keep these posts comin!
Just found your blog & I love it! I just signed up for my first race and I am so excited! I also have a mild obsession with celebrities and you should get the latest People bc they covered the wedding!
Just had a fishing question… My TTU alum husband (shout out to Jaymo!) and I were just watching a special on ESPN about a wrestler turned Alaskan fisherman turned drug addict. He mentioned he got on drugs due to the “fisherman lifestyle”. Do you find that the fisherman out on the boats are more into drugs/alcohol? You all seem to have sober/silly fun, but I wondered if that’s an issue in the industry. Sorry to bug you with a non-fun/non-running related question! Love your site!
im going to do a question/answer post all about fishing when i get back home so i will definitly address this but yes, unfortunately drugs/alcohol are a huge part of fishermens lifestyle.
OK, love the map. That is what my travels look like all the time – just a little less sane
Now that I am back running again I have no problem waking up early to run. I get that twitchy feeling and I just head out – before dog walking or anything else.
It is a wonderful moving meditation and makes me a bearable human being the rest of the day.
Astoria? Home of the GOONIES!!!!!!!
Astoria? That’s where The Goonies are!
Dude, SkinnyRunner, HAVE NO FEAR! The Kim Kardashian Kraziness will air on October 9th and 10th on E!. I mean who wouldn’t want to watch every single second of that wedding debacle. You should totally live-blog.
At risk of sounding incredibly stupid, I’m just going to have to make this statement. I seriously didn’t know that Alaska and Russia were so close together. Totally serious.
Just don’t let anyone near the wheel and Costa Rica is YOURS. Though the Panama Canal might be hard to explain away.
Have a safe trip home!!!
Your incredibly accurate map of where you’ve been cracks me up.
Glad you like the article. I asked you to help me with it because you are totally smart and stuff
Sorry I didn’t let you know when it was posted…I didn’t even know it was up on the web!
It seems like the pranks and bets might help pass the time…is it always goodtimes? With life on a boat, what’s the one thing you could do without?
Just found your blog…trying to get back to running
trying
Oh can’t wait for the Kardashian wedding. I will be watching it by myself in a dark room because if my husband or friends found out I watched it, I would never hear the end of it!
Can’t wait to read your Q&A about fishing! I have so many questions for you:) Do you see any bears or Sarah Palin’s?

HI!!! This is my first time commenting on your blog… weird because it is the BUSIEST day of the year here at work and I usually don’t have time to comment on blogs during busy times…. I think I am in the eye of the storm!
LOVE your story and your attitude! I am training for a half and am currently obsessed with running haha Though, I also have a very painful calf injury that I am trying to recover from.
Fishing for three months in Alaska! That is truly inspiring… I have always wished I could have a physical job, working with my hands… but alas, I sit at a desk.
I adore sharing my passion for running and I am very much so looking forward to reading more!
Skinny Runner, We not only have running in common, but we also have fishing in common. I shoot and edit a fishing show and blog about some of the great places we get to fish. You should bipass Sitka and stop in Shearwater near Bella Bella on your way back. I love Shearwater!! If you do stop in, tell the guys at the dock that I sent you!
Also, what’s your favourite salmon recipe? I have a freezer full!
another crazy fisherman-runner! im not a huge salmon eater but i like it baked with brown sugar and butter. healthy? not really
that’s awesome!! you’ve been all over. running is such a cool way to see new cities… love it!
I ate some spice drops today and thought of you…I know it’s creepy, but it’s the truth!
I got swallowed up by the work monster the last month and a half (plus this long-ass road trip), and I can’t believe you are still fishing! This has to be more than last year. I don’t remember you being “On a boat!” for this many weeks (months?).
Then again, could be my aging brain not remembering things properly.
Did the earthquake affect you at all?!?! So pathetic when I am watching the news and see that there was an earthquake in Alaska..possible tsunami..and I think about a random person from a blog I read!! But seriously– I hope you all are OK!!
yep we’re fine, thanks for asking!!
